Bought a 2001
986
that was running until it was left open in the rain. The original M535 was toast. Many fried components. Bought an immobilizer that powered up a lot of stuff when plugged in, but will not start the car. Have the original key. What is my

I'd suggest visiting

and introducing yourself and your car. We usually reply better when we know who we're responding to. Your username suggests you have some experience with British cars. Porsches are quite different (as I'm sure you're finding..)
I know the web is a place where people ask questions and get instant answers. That usually isn't how forums (at least this one) work. We actually think a bit about your issue and might ask some questions before offering answers.
I'd suggest also reading:

Now, as to your problem,
I have no direct information on how the 986 immobilizer works.. but in general, these are matched to the key. The key sends a signal to the immobilizer that it's an original Porsche key for this vehicle, and it's OK to start the car; it's not stolen.
The systems in use that do this usually use an RFID-type chip in the key fob, which is read by a coil around the ignition slot, and the result is sent to the immobilizer telling it if the key matches the vehicle.
If this is the case - and again - I have no direct experience with that era immobilizer - you likely need the keys that match the immobilizer to get that chip.
Some questions:
Does your 986 have keyless entry (ie - lock/unlock button on the key) - if so - does that work?
What is a M535 (aside from a BMW model of the mid-1980s)?

M535 is the immobilizer package under the drivers seat that gets wet and stops everything.
Interesting - typically that would have a PN starting with the model it was introduced in, in the case of a
986
immobilizer, it was first used in a 996 series
911
. I've never heard it referred to as an M535.. is that on the unit?
