Aside from a nice drive in the Adelaide Hills today, I also cleaned the sticky radio buttons and fitted a 996 cup front lip.

Took it into work today, off to Flat Six Motorsport for a health check and fuel injector clean - its been sitting for a while so just want to make sure everything is 100%

Still not a fan of black wheels, but of all the colours, they probably match Speed Yellow the best
Seems like all the GT3 action is on the for sale thread. So let me start with a few pics of my gearbox rebuild on the 996Mk1 CS....
What started as a refresh of 2nd and 3rd gear synchros has become a little more serious. A bit of a while you're in there, scope creep kind of thing.......
🙄
Anyway, all new bearings, steel synchros, some new gears, shift fork, a 3.89 crown wheel & pinion in place of the 4.0 Cup Car ratio that was in there, plus a new LSD, clutch plate, pressure plate, throw out bearing, clutch for blah blah! Eye watering cost, but do it once, do it properly.......
Ironically I am in the middle of doing the same thing on my gearbox and it’s only a spare. The bearings etc are very expensive. My gearbox will have $20K in it on parts alone when finished
👀
I am also taking ring a pinion back to road spec.
Mainly track work wear I think Mick, the car only has about 70,000 k's. Box wasn't bad at idle surprisingly although the LW flywheel masks whatever else may have been going on!
Jason yep I hear you, I'm pretty sure I'm at mid-high $20's and I get my parts at cost!! There's a couple of new gears in that figure as well.
Took it into work today, off to Flat Six Motorsport for a health check and fuel injector clean - its been sitting for a while so just want to make sure everything is 100%
The car clicked over to 29,000 KS on the journey
Been there before... lol!!!
If you havent sold the cup 4.0's I'd be interested in them! I shouldn't have left them in my 997!
That is looking shit hot
@Jason A
SY 996.1 looks so bloody good
Fitted my GT3RS wheel and shift knob today. Amazing how a little bit of alcantara somehow enhances the driving experience. Easy job without too much swearing.
You probably know this already, but the alcantara can become really scungy from sweaty palms etc. I have found a pair of proper racing gloves with leather on the palms, makes for very positive steering control when you're pushing hard, no slip
🙂
I blame
@901er
for the low kms
😂
Yep it loves to hold onto DNA. Given it’s synthetic I find it cleans up well with a microfiber towel and a bit of Ammo Lather every time the car is washed. Unlike suede which needs a special cleaner and is it prone to losing colour. My hands are usually pretty clean but I don’t mind race gloves for the road either
😃
here you go mate (vid below). His products are only available through his website. US shipping bites a bit but worth it if buying a few things. I’m also a fan of the Hydrate product for drying the car
Plain old water and microfiber also works ok if it’s not too grubby.
Looks great Jason, almost makes me like Speed Yellow!
🙃
Kurt, once its all back together I'll probably sell the 4.0 and will ping you.
Here's a few more pics of progress. Glad you guys are adding more content, the for sale thread is just not enough GT3 action !
😁
Not today, but this is something all center lock equipped GT3 owners should do, or learn how to do as it definitely won’t get done at the tyre changing shop, and from my experience is also not part of the scheduled servicing, but it is something that needs to be done periodically. I do mine if getting Tyres or when doing an oil change , whichever comes first.

Aluminium grease on the hubs? I read somewhere that you’re meant to apply that every time you remove and reinstall the wheels. Thankfully the roadworthy guy I used recently decided he didn’t want to mess with centrelocks and did his checks with the wheels in place. I assume Porsche would do properly at a service?
It’s assembly paste, not just grease and one would hope that Porsche do it properly at a service, but I found that not to be the case and was told that the clicking noise I was hearing was everything from worn hubs to wheel bearings to uprights and even the Diff, but turned out to be that the center lock nuts just needed to be serviced correctly
No mate, not me!
Getting close but now waiting on a couple of shims to come from Germany...!
🙄
Some new suspension to go in shortly as well. I wondered why it was so bloody stiff and discovered it has Cup Car suspension..... Back to stock it is!
Those are some meaty toe links there
@Cam Arnott
. Are they the 997 cup version? I’ve spent hours reading about these tonight!
Aside from a nice drive in the Adelaide Hills today, I also cleaned the sticky radio buttons and fitted a 996 cup front lip. Subtle change but I prefer the slightly more aggressive look compared to the factory lip.
I got the ones via Rennline (not Porsche Cup ones), but tell you what, they transformed the steering of my car. We just couldn;t get it right, tramlining etc, but put these in and had alignment redone to specs we'd been trying to get to, and it was like, WOW, this is perfect!!!
Had it done just before Cars & Coffee at Winton, and when I rang my mechanic on the Saturday morning to tell him how good it was, he was almost afraid to answer in case it had gone horribly wrong
🙂
.
If you get the Rennline ones you need to make sure you get the bolts with the fixed position to replace the concentric adjustable ones
Got a link to the Rennline ones? From memory they are replicas of the 996 cup version with no bump steer correction? Even though my car won’t see track use I had the eccentric adjuster move on my old GT3 and it was an awful experience on track. I’m keen to eliminate the eccentric adjuster with said lock out. When you say you aligned to specs, do you mean factory? I’ve been reading up on Kussmaul settings but suspect they’re a tad aggressive for fast road use. Not loving the factory alignment but I’m pretty sure the rear toe is out of spec based on how it feels.
This is a spare that I had before Porsche stopped making them. Demonspeed in the US are currently having a mould made to replicate them, which is a good thing as they’re consumable!
The Kussmaul settings are very good for the road - just reduce the neg, camber on both front & rear by +/- 0.5 deg. You can then tune the suspension by altering the sway bar settings and tyre pressures depending on the road or driving style. If you are tracking the car, then the maximum neg. camber you can get with the minimum suggested ride height should be used.
I found these settings far better than the standard ones as listed in the manual.
Here's the link to the rear toe arm
https://www.rennline.com/Adjustable-Rear-Toe-Arm/productinfo/S62/
and the bolts
https://www.rennline.com/Rennline-Eccentric-Lock-Kit/productinfo/S40/
I'm not 100% on the settings (I can check at home later), but I think they were pretty close to the Kussmaul settings (I remember comparing them to what had been printed about them), so probably close to what Stephen has said. I've found them pretty good for both road and track use
This is Kussmaul vs factory. Front grip on initial turn in with factory car is not too bad but it’s what happens when you apply the throttle that I find the most troubling. Front end lifts up and the steering goes numb with a lot of understeer. Probably too much squat in the rear but stiffening the sway bar should help with that (and then also stiffening front to maintain neutral front to rear balance).
@Stephen Tinker
I was thinking around -2.3 front and rear, neutral front toe and +2mm rear toe in per side. From my understanding Kussmaul is more of a track orientated set up but I used to run heaps more camber for the track, especially in the front.
I've ALWAYS used less camber on the rear than on the front - even if its only 0.25 - 0.5 deg. less as it helps with initial turn in ....
And I think you are on the right track regards the F / R toe.
The reason I used slightly less camber than Roland's advise was purely for tyre wear. But after about 8,000km on nearly new PS2' 's , the rear's were still good of another 8,000 km and the fronts were "almost" as new...
If only it had cup holders
🤭
I agree with a bit more in front than rear too. My main concern for the front was also tyre wear (and tram lining, which shouldn’t be as bad with 0 front toe) but if you found the tyres held up ok perhaps I’ll try bumping up the front a bit. Did you run the exact Kussmaul set up Stephen or less 0.5 camber in the front/rear? Reason I ask is 0.5 less in the rear is -1.8 which is factory. I’m not overly fussed with tyre wear, with the kms I’m doing it will be years before they need replacement, by which time they’ll be hard as rocks anyway.
Apologies if this has turned into a set up thread! I will start a separate one.

I have something like this which I clip onto the door pocket, but you do tend to kick it getting in and out....
Or if you don't have a radio:
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/UNIVERSAL-DOUBLE-DIN-RADIO-POCKET-DRINK-CUP-HOLDER-STORAGE-BOX-FOR-CAR-TRUCK/303349377002?_trkparms=aid%3D1110006%26algo%3DHOMESPLICE.SIM%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20201210111314%26meid%3D860423caf164472faebd61c65ef4aa13%26pid%3D101195%26rk%3D6%26rkt%3D12%26mehot%3Dag%26sd%3D383768710796%26itm%3D303349377002%26pmt%3D1%26noa%3D0%26pg%3D2047675%26algv%3DSimplAMLv9PairwiseUnbiasedWeb&_trksid=p2047675.c101195.m1851
If you are not worried about tyre wear, I would go along with Kussmaul's set up every time - to the letter. Honestly, you won't regret it.
Of course, the only other conundrum is who is going to set up the car to Roland's specs? Sounds easy, but getting the (especially the front) toe in equal on both sides takes quite a bit of backwards and forwards in time and effort.
Personally, I wouldn’t trust anyone other than a Porsche specialist (not Porsche Centre) to do something like this. It’s pretty fiddly especially when you start rotating front struts in order to get the castor where you want it to be.
As stiff as the cup car is, I don’t think the coffee would stay in the cup for too long on an Adelaide Hills backroad
😜
I was surprised to find out that the stock .1 one is still available. I grabbed the last one that PCA had in stock to put on the shelf, presume they will order in more......
I believe the road version for the .2 is still available too. It’s usually the Motorsport parts that get discontinued first. Also the road version is a money maker...$750 versus $130 for the cup lip which has more material and is more flexible.
Well
@Rick V
had a chance to hit the Southern Vales test track yesterday arvo.
Been a while since it has been out so always a thrill just to take it for a punt but even more of a reason now the alignment and balancing has been done.
To be completely honest I wasn't expecting a lot, well they are a great set as stock but I can say it has totally changed the dynamics and handling characteristics of the car.
The front end now feels completely neutral with no understeer, turns in faster, transitions are smoother and doesn't feel like the front is getting ploughed when hard on the gas exiting corners.
The rear seem to have an extra 50% more grip/drive outta corners as well.
To date this is the best days pay that has been put into the G&T, next is the DSC Controller and I'm hoping that will again up the ante.
Hey
@Shedpest
nice work. I’m keen to get the details of where you got this work done, as I will go down the same path once I have the new Bridgestone hoops installed.
The GT3 took a back seat this weekend.... perfect convertible weather for a cruise up to the Barossa in the Green Machine.
The sway bars are adjustable @ both front and rear.
You can adjust them by removing the locating bolt(s) from one location hole (IIRC 4 locations @ rear & 3 @ front) to another position which alters the tensioning of the bar which corispondingly alters the stiffness of the bar.
That's on the hardest setting. Are you sure its on the drivers side? Perhaps it my eyes....
If you can imagine a cantilever, if you try to lever it up from the position it is now , it would be harder to push up (against the shock spring) than if the (drop link) bolt was in the rearmost hole. The further away from the cantilever, the easier it is to move which = a softer position for the roll bar.
Does that make sense ??
@Stephen Tinker
yep on it now, just had one of the shed pests explain it all to me and that was the conclusion we came to that it was on the hardest setting.
After having a recovery day on Thursday after a track day on the bike on Wednesday , I had a mate help install the DSC controller and accelerometer into the G&T.
The Southern Vales test track was available yesterday arvo for a shakedown and once again I went in with the thought of how much difference can it really make.
Well shock horror, the hype behind the DSC is all true, it really is a huge step up from the stock PASM module.
In standard mode it has turned the notorious "Goat track" into a somewhat user friendly road for the G&T with the kidney belt not required.
Sport mode was engaged on a few fast sweeping roads and again the car felt much more flatter, smoother and generally more compliant.
The DSC is certainly one of the best upgrades to the 997 and rates 10 out of 10 for bang for buck.
Last on the wish list is some fixed back carbon seats, if any has any some collecting dust.
Finally its all back together - gearbox in, new stock shocks, springs & drop links plus some RSS adjustable rear toe links. Aligned, corner weighted......OMFG!!!

While we are talking about exhausts, it appears the Australian 996 GT3s do not have their secondary (i.e. after cat converter) O2 sensors wired up. The sensors are fitted to the cats, they just don’t plug into the main wiring harness. Can anyone confirm why Porsche would do this? Weird!
Probably the same as on 993's - the euro ECU was slightly different to the US, and has less (or no) 02 input. But yes it is odd that a 02 sensor is there instead of just a plug.
I agree, but wanted to stay true to the car’s history and display it as raced. They are also very rare and quite light weight. Look a bit better in the flesh as they are gloss black
I have the originals at home if I want to be a bit more classic
Sent the picture to Matt Coleman who gave it the thumbs up - which was nice
I actually must admit to having bought the set of track wheels for my car from the PO. They're black too, but thinking of a gold plasti-dip conversion..... I'm actually wondering whether they might be Speedlines too, light as heck. What are the Speedline markings?
That makes sense. Porsche may have worked out it was cheaper to just leave the sensors in there than disrupt production with different parts, or something like that!
Took a call from my mechanic saying that on top of the clutch bits I'd bought he had to install a new Single Mass flywheel as well
😞
More $$, but what the heck, it is only money, and it will make driving it so much easier
🙂
Dropped it into Buiks workshop early in the week to replace sway bar drop links….. which I probably damaged trying to keep up with
@wilson59
&
@Shedpest
in the Classic Adelaide recently.
Ben & team were great to deal with as usual. Decided to drive it to/from work for the rest of the week…… not ideal GT3 territory, but surprisingly good fun.
Hanging for spring weather & Adelaide Hills roads.
Yeah, I was happy to hear that from the boys, along with a much cheaper fix than it sounded like it was going to be from the drivers seat!
@spiller
we should get some local PFA drives going when the better weather arrives….. I’m sure there’s a few usual suspects on here that’d be up for it.
Interesting. The cup car comes with a road car link on one side and a beefed up adjustable link on the other side (left hand side). I’ve never had one of the road car ones fail on my cup. I have a spare set of motorsport ones here that I’d like to fit to the road car. Does the sway bar have to be loaded (i.e. weight on the suspension) when tightening the drop link nut or can it be done with the car off the ground? What’s the purpose of the ratchet strap?
You need to unload the tension on the sway bar as you will most likely have the car jacked up with wheel off. Better to secure first saver a lot of stuffing around and is safer
With lockdown in SA there wasn’t much else to do than fit an RS wing. This one is a replica and was built to order in Belgium. If anyone wants the details let me know. Quality of the fit and finish is OEM and the price was very good.
All good mate the girly wing is safely tucked away for when she wishes to pretend she doesn’t love a hiding
😜
Shooting for more front camber? Are those the Essex Racing AP rotors? Very nice!
Yep Essex AP, and as
@mc968cs
mentioned, last longer, lighter, no heat cracking from the drilled OEM and most importantly they look sexier.
@spiller
staying with this set up
Mmm, my first reply must have got lost, or I didn't press the right button....
mc, you mightn't have seen these before, but here are the Roland Kussmaul settings that have been reproduced here a couple of times, most recently by
@spiller
a few months back. I'm running pretty close to these, with Dunlop Direzza ZIII hybrid Road / Track tyres, and I'm very happy with the handling, especially after fitting the adjustable length rear toe arms, which transformed my steering.
Agree! I used to run -3.8 on my old GT3 and it was perfect. Went for -3 on my current car and it needs more, but not getting too carried away as it’s not a track car. I think it’s also important to look at front to rear camber ratio. If you like a car that turns , it’s best to run less on the rear than the front otherwise it will plow everywhere.
I’m sure he has mate, Mark has one of if not the most developed 997 GT3’s in PCNSW and was always helpful with advice when I had mine…
From what I’ve seen, the Kussmaul settings are what most people use as baseline, but track alignments tend to be far more aggressive with camber for sure!
Finally got the car cover off & took her for a spin up to The Bend with the Sporting Car Club SA. A quick squirt for a few leisurely laps, followed by lunch.
Slack of me, no photos, but Super Sprints with Light Car Club of Tas at Symmons Plains today. I wanted to try out the new clutch, great not having to concentrate on getting the co-ordination of the shift just perfect, light clutch made it so much easier. Did 5 sessions I think it was, got down to a 6 which I was pretty happy with on my Direzza ZIIIs (improvement of 4 secs during the day), will be interesting to see what I can do with my track wheels and A050's next time. Chose the perfect time to head home as a ran into the rain 5 kms after I had left the track.....
Yes
Yes mate…. I guess you could say that! It was…… um…… a little un-satisfying….. driving miss daisy speed! But not a bad recy …. Got a Mustang drive voucher to use shortly
👍
👍
@edgy
was nice enough to sell me back my old OZ wheels from 4 years ago. The CS is now looking very similar to my old flame (bottom). I think I’m done now. If anyone is interested in some minimally used Nankang AR-1 r compound/semi slicks/whatever you want to call them, they will be for sale.
It's really tough to beat a clean 996 GT3 wearing a set of track wheels/rubber. Just oozes motorsport and a begging to be driven (hard!)
Well done
@spiller
, car is just perfection.
Story of this car is a few pages back and I am a little distracted with working on Birdie, although still gathering parts and almost completed remaking the loom.
=======
To the broader collective - Does anyone have experience/recommendations on Front Grille inserts?
Most, if not all the reviews I have read mention reshaping/so so fitment, which is making me think to buy a sheet and just cut and mould myself
Even with the grills you will still need one of these custom made, super-trick, sucky-sucky extensions to clean the radiators out as well.
RRP 3x Slabs of Coopers (includes free postage)
^^ That's the kind of priceless information/details we need
🤣
I reckon I could have made a path with the gravel I found
behind
the radiators when I stuck my head underneath there.....I suspect a '
good off
' was had by one of the previous owners
😯
The seats in my CS have alcantara cushions and the drivers seat has a patch sewn in over the right bolster to cover some wear so I've been buying some trinkets to make it all mint and original. Not cheap but current values justify a bit of a spend I think!
@spiller its better but not night and day and not as good as yours!!
But I have a feeling the Mk1's have shift rods vs cables in the Mk2's...? Might have to check PET!
Cam the very early 996.1 cup cars had a shift rod but all of the 996 road cars share the same cable set up AFAIK. What I can see pictured there is certainly what came out of mine. Mine has the cup cables which are nice and heavy feeling but do transmit a small hum from the gears at cruising speeds. Though yours has a single mass flywheel so you wouldn’t hear that much, and instead you’ll hear the flywheel knocking away at idle (which is cool!). They don’t make the cup cables anymore but if you shake the tree on rennlist someone will have a used set. The other option is Numeric.
New M&M exhaust system is on! This is the same system that Manthey Racing used to use with their K400 upgrade kit.
Fantastic quality and workmanship.
Haven't been for a drive yet as I'm waiting on some new engine mounts to arrive as the old ones were sagging a little. Hopefully tomorrow!
New to the forum. Long term Porsche fan, having had many Porsches over the years but have finally realized my bucket list item of purchasing a 991.2 GT3. Bought locally in Adelaide from a mate of
@Shedpest
As an engineer and tragic tinkerer, the car has a few minor mods including an Akropovic titanium backbox bypass, memory foam LWBS inserts, DSC PASM controller module, some sound deadening on the rear firewall/back seats/wheel well (I know it's sacrilegious but noticeably quieter for non track use), magnetic stone guards etc.
The forum looks interesting and I look forward to contributing to the forum in due course where I can.
I've been thinking of getting a set of magnetic stone guards for my 991.2 GT3. Do you know a supplier in Australia? I know there is a company called MagnaGrafik in the US that makes them, but local would be preferable.
Found a set of LWB seats on the hard rubbish pile on a walk before Christmas, the Lava orange really wasn't my flavour so gave them to my guru upholsterer to funk-up with a bit of Pepita and new head
rests.
Ummm.
I figure you are just shitting us now
@Shedpest
..?
Porsche RS parts on a Hard rubbish pile..!?! Surely you walk in different neighbourhoods to mine. I am too scared to look in my neighbours trash.
😳
I bought a complete 996.2 GT3 intake manifold that I am plannign on cleanign up and fitting to the car. Looked for ages for a 997 GT3 manifold but refused to pay the "Porsche tax"..
Hi Peter
Two things - One was that I wanted a slightly taller ratio. The other was the higher wear factor in that the 8:32 ratio of the 4.0 -
the 4.0 r&p wears faster than the 3.89 from the because the 4.0 has an even tooth count that causes accelerated wear as the ring teeth hit the pinion teeth at the same spot every revolution. 3.89 solves that problem with an uneven tooth count. Probably not a biggie in a road car vs a Cupcar but I only wanted to pull the box apart once!
Excuse the dodgy pic. Inserts now match the steering wheel, shifter and the other pieces I had trimmed. Also an added bonus with the cushions being the same size (long story)
Just ordered, so yet to be fitted.
Although they are OK, the OEM dampers though need more compression damping and the fronts have too much primary stiction. This makes the tyre feel nervous on high frequency, small amplitude bump particularly. I also find both ends need more high speed compression even in the sport setting.
Wow sounds like your dialing in on the finer points.
just curious if you looked at tuning the original dampers with 3rd party controllers like the the dsc or their suspension upgrade offering
https://www.dscsport.com/porsche/#991
Yep, I have used controllers before, though not on a 991.2 GT3. At the end of the day though, not amount of electronic tweaking will overcome fundamental mechanical deficiencies.
Not quite on the same playing field as all you grease monkeys, working on your GT3s ….. but the world just became a better place, when I realized today that my new golf buggy fits the GT3’s frunk perfectly ……. Now I can combine my two favorite things in life.
The drives to the regular boys golf trips just got a whole lot more fun. Hell yeah
👍
500kms into ownership with a few laps of my favorite local loop this weekend. Starting to love this thing feeling/hearing something new each time out. Every time i put it in the garage I’m ready to go again 🏎
Some photos from today back in the garage. Too excited to stop and take a photo in the wild
🤪
Looks neat! Spotted a white one today GT.3 plate. I was lucky enough to be on track in a 992 GT3 in Qld- what a car! When is your first track day Scott?
If I don’t get one in this year it will be early next year, plan is to run the car in properly which hopefully should be in November on a 3 day trip into the Vic Alps
Yes Simon was with me on a Sunday morning run he made comments to the fact he could feel the ride was different to his 991.1 RS maybe firmer ?? Also noted the sound of the car having slightly more induction noise and possibly more muted although he does have a sharkworks bypass on his RS.
im hoping to head over to TAS early next year for a drive with your crew!!
The required 1500 km run in mark was reached yesterday as part of a 3 day Tour of the Vic Alps with the crew. What a perfect way to get to know the 992 with 650kms of seat time yesterday on some of Vic’s finest twisties.
Even though I haven’t revved it beyond 7k at 3/4 throttle yet the car feels sensational the ride feel and compliance in these conditions is spot on. On some of the faster smoother sections I even had the suspension in its track setting. Looking forward to another day behind the wheel today before its home for a good wash.

I got excited when I saw this post, the still image looks like you’re drifting it from off camera to the left. tip over run in kms then traction off, 9000rpm sideways. Alas it was not quite what I expected……..
😂
is the front plate a sticker? Was thinking of doing same if and when my 4RS arrives. Got a supplier?
Haha
I had Graphico make up the sticker for me, not cheap but the quality is excellent.
You’ll have your 4RS in no time. There is already one for sale at Brighton, cost of finance is shattering dreams whilst flipper has left for another economic cycle.
Adelaide Rally on the weekend three days of great driving what a great event. Was the best way to get familiar with the new car the grip level on this thing is incredible .
