How feasable would a 996 engine swap be on an 986 boxster , is it a plug and play or what would be considered the level of difficulty.

All depends which year is your 986 , as I believe that the earlier models have mechanical (cable) throttle cable, then it went to electronic, also newer models use different engine control modules that are not compatible with the earlier models. However, if both 986 /996 are same year, you should not have any major issues. There are many treads regarding this topic on the 986 forum.
