Cracked barrel that had been repaired once or twice or 3x before possibly.

The Advans I run on my track car which doubles as a hillclimb car have a few weld repairs on them.

Suggestion
Dont, go black, not on these rims, but if you absolutely must, be sure to go gloss black, DO have the rims separated and the barrel lip polished and cleared, make sure to clean the bolts thoroughly with like brake cleaner or acetone.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Still not fully confident in the shifts with the b&m shifter.
Figured I could share my first porsche car adventures and maybe try and document it....otherwise I might forget lol.
Morning after the 5 hour drive home with it. No inspection. I knew I wanted it and the price was right. If it ran I was going to drive it home.
The car had been sitting for over a year so it was a bit worrisome since that is typically what causes more issues than anything. But it made it home in an awesome thunderstorm monsoon no problem <3.
The car had been sitting under a tree outside for a long time from what I could tell and the awesome 2 piece bbs wheels were used as winter wheels it had appeared. So first things first i started cleaning the moss and crud from all the seals and cracks on the exterior. and scrubbed the wheels down.
Before
After
That alone felt like i already had started doing modifications to it haha.
Doge for size reference
more pictures because i love it lol
had a slow leak on one of the rear wheels and discovered my first issue.
Cracked barrel that had been repaired once or twice or 3x before possibly.
had a good friend who is a bit better at welding alum than me repair it properly
was a good time to ditch the winter tires and put some old scrubs on that i had sitting around.
Cool FDs. I used to have a 94 touring. Too much of a gap between owning it and my 996 to really draw a comparison. Really wish I could drive them back to back now and see how they feel. Any thoughts from your experience?
thanks guys.
I have been driving rx7's since i was 16 so im kinda jaded on those or just used to them lol. However the 996 and the fd are 2 different animals imo. To be honest I have not had my fd or the 911 to a racetrack yet. My z33 is my track duty car and the fd has always been my street car to throw fire ***** and scare the hell out of zr1 corvettes etc yada yada and all the other rx7s were drift cars.
I will be getting the 996 to the track soon, not sure if it will make it this year yet.
Shifter bushing were garbage so I pulled the center area apart to replace with a b&m shifter that came with the car and spray the ugly blue console a metallic color to try and match the rest of the interior. 2 birds .
I used some spare duplicolor wheel paint i had left over from spraying some old te37s a few weeks back.
color was surprisingly similar to the rest of the trim.
Big improvement all around .
Still not fully confident in the shifts with the b&m shifter. However it does feel better than i expected. I read so many negative reviews i was hesitant to install it but im glad i did.
I really want TEs for mine. Wheel GOAT.
Ive owned a couple sets for old EVOs and it’s hard to find something they don’t look right on.

Your car looks good with the wingless aero look. Dig it.
thanks man. The TE37 aren't for the 996 unfortunately. Some banged up beater wheels for the z.
I appreciate the kind words. I am really starting to like it wingless but I would like to go for the cup car look. None of my street cars are very practical lol. I think if i got a nice tt or c4s I could leave it alone inside and out with the exception of some coilovers. . . . plus i wouldn't be able to afford mods anyways, who am i kiddin. lol
How confident are you with those welded wheels? I haven't had much luck with wheel repair. I usually just bite the bullet and replace.
Nice car by the way!
99.9% confident
I probably have a handful of wheels with repairs.
The Advans I run on my track car which doubles as a hillclimb car have a few weld repairs on them. No leaks and no issues with about 5 years of abuse. Lots of street miles as well since I still like to drive the car to the track, work, etc.
hillclimb clip for reference of trust lol.

Spoiler
Love the 996 but really keep staring at the white FD in the fence shot. Drove past a house that had one in the garage on the drive to HS back in the day, got pulled in by yet another amazing rear end as usual.
I realize that center console needed some serious touch-up polishing but I usually like center console painted to match the exterior. Also, I notice the car thas the GT3 lower center delete AND the same cup holder as me!
Yea white Fd's are about as good as white 911's haha. Unfortunately neither of the white fd's are mine lol.
Thanks, more than likely this is going to replace my z33 track car. So mechanical stuff is the main focus for now. The exterior has seen better days for sure.
I dont know if its because the center color was so many shades off from the exterior color or what but it looked too corny for me. Yea the center delete is great, really gives the vintage racecar feel.
getting close to 206k <3
I would like to do a spoiler of some sort. Probably something more track inspired. Howerver I am liking it more and more wingless.
alright. So the roof on this thing was scorched. My buddy had a piece of scrap vinyl that was pretty damn close to matching so we tossed it on. Plans are to eventually make the whole car white so for now this bandaid will do.
Talked with some friends at Touge Factory in Chicago about some coilovers for the 996. They whipped these Reinharte R1's up for me.
Install was a total breeze. Only minor hang ups were the through bolts on the knuckles being seized. had to cut one off which was a bummer. So new front endlinks/bolts are inbound.
Also rolled the fenders while I was in there. Scored a good amount of room doing that.
I was going to say after the drop and fender rolling I have a pretty cool cheap set of wheels for sale that would look right in there, but then I spied you got something new already.... when we going to see them ?
No plans for paint at the moment. A good friend I race with is finishing up an engine on a 997 he picked up so we are thinking about wrapping them both white once we get them finished.
I actually like the blue the car is currently but I would like to get a spoiler and the front bumper and roof could use resprayed so weighing my options.
intrigued with the B&M shifter. I've got a car coming that has one already installed. My current car has the numeric installed and i really like it. I wonder how it will compare to the B&m
Honestly not a huge fan of any types of short throw shifters. I prefer proper functioning oem in most all cases. If the b&m hadn't come with the car more than likely I would have tried to buy an oem 997 shifter and give that a try.
depending on how I start to like or dislike this b&m that would be the next plan.
Pulled the seats to do a good clean on the carpet. Anytime I get a new car I like to remove the seats to clean in all the crevices that a vacuum cant get to.
Also installed a "D" shaped suede wheel . The stock one was very worn out.
My 996 came with a B&M style short shifter. I used to have a 997 C4S and remember liking the shifter so I bought a 997 shifter and put it in my 997. I drove around the block once and promptly put back in the 996 console with B&M shifter. In other words, the 997 stock shifter is horrible in comparison. Felt like soup.
removing seats turned into removing carpet. . . . for good.
Removing carpet turned into "Safety Devices cage install.
Going to have to weld in some base plates to properly mount the cage in. Unfortunately its not a complete bolt in affair.
yea absolutely . I street drive my other caged cars often as well. Will be doing a 1000 mile round trip to northern michigan(again) to compete in the annual empire hillclimb in a caged car.
From everything I've read, the Numeric is the cats meow. Let us know how the two compare.
Great thread Derek, I look forward to following along.
White = the best looking 996's in my opinion!
I say this with the utmost affection - I love it when people can't stop.
Are you going to get a plate to cover up the alarm module? Re-route it? Or are you... *clutches pearls* going to leave it like that?
Dude, my ash tray is zip tied to e-brake bracket, so obviously, dig your setup.
You could convince me to remove my carpet if you tell me it took 20 or more pounds out.
I'll provide a similar comparison within the month. I currently have a Schnell short throw which is pretty much identical to B&M, had a linkage pop the other day going into 3rd. All the components look fine and popped back in so I'm not sure why it happened but not happy about the $120 tow bill. Ordered a 997 kit to test out next. If the feel isn't right going to try the short throw kit on Suncoast.
Like 808Bill said, Numeric seems to be the best of the best based on others input, for a weekend car it's more than I require though.
I have an Agency Power ss in my old shifter assemble left over from my switch to a Numeric. Its a shorter throw then the numeric on the middle hole and always felt solid. To be honest i didnt even know it was in there until i made the swap. I just really wanted the numeric.
Wow... this is turning into very interesting thread. That car is turning into a track beast! Cool! What are your plans for the engine? Any mods or rebuilds? Or, just drive it like you stole it?
lots of padding under it. Might be right around 20lbs. oddly enough i normally weight everything and take photos of it on the scale for documentation because questions always arise on the internet and there is always speculation of regurgitated misinformation about weights of things. BUT of course I got carried away and didn't weigh any of it lol.
I sent an oil sample out for testing. everything came back great so gonna just keep schaeffers oil in it and keep on eye on oil samples and give it the beans. Feels healthy and sounds great so not much more I can do but keep an eye on things.
Hoping to leave the z at home and get the 911 out for a relaxed track day in October.
Been terribly bad with updates on this. \
Was hoping to get this thing on track before the end of the year but I was caught up racing the Z up until early November and then one final test day to get a good base on things that need addressed over winter.
Did a bunch of spirited driving in this testing out the new coilovers. Thing is a ripper. I guestimate this thing goes 2 seconds faster than my z in my first outting with it lol
Our team ended up taking the overall and class win in a 4 hour endurance race with NASA. So that made the extra time with the z worth it.
You Tube
Hopefully be working on it over the winter and get some more frequent updates lol
Thanks for sharing and what an impressive and incredible result! The enduros are so challenging and stressful on the drivers and cars. Last year I was on crew at the NASA 25 hours of Thunderhill, but it is cancelled this year. So our team is headed to COTA for the WRL enduros this weekend. It will be my first trip since March!
So, one of the big problems with the stock shifters is the "rubbery feeling" right? Guess what? The shift ****/handle is made of... ... ... RUBBER! Get rid of the stock shift ****, and you'll lose a good deal of the rubber feel. I can vouch for the Numeric Racing shifter - It really is that much better - including the cables - but you're talking around $1100... FF Billet shift **** around $160 plus shipping...
http://www.function-first.com/produc...sic-shift-****
Thank you! Looking forward to running more of them 2021.
I would love to drive the 25 hour someday. I always try and watch as much of it as I can. Last year looked miserable with all the rain.
Good luck this weekend! Contemplating going to COTA this spring to run the GLTC event down there but I think starting the season off with a cross country event isn't the best for my budget LOL
What car are you guys running in WRL?
Precisely, last year was terrible (the mud caused several unexpected issues). 2019 car was an 86, they finished and got P2.
This year is a new Supra, with only one 5 hr race under its belt. This should be quite a challenge.
Team is TAPGMotorsports on FB and IG.
currently
fixed a few things before the road trip down to the rolex 24... but ended up flying down instead due to my buddies 997 not getting finished in time
new front endlinks.
also discovered a small coolant leak when I was doing a muffler delete.
When I get my 79' rx7 finished up and ready for opening day at Gingerman Raceway im going to do the battery cable from the battery back to the alternator and starter.
I have the same wheels on a 2001 996 MK1 in seal grey with factory aerokit. I am thinking about having the wheels powder coated in black. Given your experience, would you recommend this?
got a little more snow than normal up here.
found a good deal on some 997 c4s wheels. Might run these for a bit this year when i rebuild my forgelines.
Got away from the snow and went to the Rolex 24 again.
Weather was perfect.
pics from my old android so bear with the quality lol
got a chance to toss on a rear wheel for test fit. Gonna take some rolling and pulling and a little trimming to fit but im pretty excited. Hopefully will have a morning to get to it soon but with track days coming up I have a lot to get done on the other racecars.
Great post! The 996 is coming along nicely and I like the new wheels.
I love the FDs
I am just getting mine back on the road after being parked/stored for last 6 years.
Just put a set of Michelin Pilot Sport AS4 on the stock rims to be able to transport it from storage in the next few weeks
Will need to figure out if I will drive it more or just track it, and couldn't commit to a tire for the TE-37s,
Gotta agree that the Volks are my favorite wheel for many cars
Stance is fire... knowing what I know about the wheel wells, to have usable travel your going to have to spend some time working the area where the bumper and fender meet.
It will be worth it though.
Wheels are stock 997 C4S spec and tire size. 305 rear and 235 front.
Definitely going to have some time into it. Hoping to get to it soon. Also need to test the fitment of my forgelines now that the car is at a different height.
your photo reminds me I have been wanting to tear out all of that muffler heat shielding in the rear bumper.
Much appreciated. I didn't think I was going to like them as much as I do. Gotta love OEM wheel upgrades haha
Im trying. Juggling the racecars and drift cars its hard to give this the attention I want to.
I wish I could afford to score that gt3 decklid from you still. Embarrassing how frequently i think about that lol
Well I still have it, but they are pricey for factory parts.
that’s the only reason you got the car it at the price you did.
I liked the look of it with the Gt3 deck lid.
damn i wish the paint looked that good still
The flex pipes on the after hours exhaust system had started to disconnect itself from the rest of the exhaust. It looked like it lived a long wonderful life lol.
I did some modifications and welded up some turn outs. Sounds really sick if you ask me.
(i dont know how to post the video)
You Tube
Finally had a chance to do some cutting and trimming to get these new wheels on. No rub anywhere even at full compression. These Reinharte coilovers rip.
The 19s looks sweet but I have a feeling eventually i well be reverting back to 18s. Tall sidewalls are my weakness <3
Been busy working on the z33 and the 1st gen rx7 prepping for some races I havent had much time for the 911 unfortunately. Did take it on a few hour road trip the other day tho so that was nice.
Little clip from the hillclimb the other weekend if anyone is interested.
You Tube
Been a while since updates.
the 996 hasn't gotten much love yet. Occasional drive here and there.
BUT we did add another 996 to the stable. Its a tip car and needs some engine work but its immaculate. It actually had an engine failure on the way home from purchasing it so I haven't even had it home yet, its been sitting at a buddies shop until we can dig into it.
Derek—Great looking car. Your RX-7 collection makes me miss my ‘86.
Ex made me sell it when my daughter was born. Still bet I could have strapped a car seat in the cargo space…
TC
I remember you talking about those in another thread and them being produced in Indiana. Their site didn't have much to go off of. And it's almost my last name lol. So I was interested.
Any more info?
@Derek King
They are produced in the Chicago area at TF Works .
https://www.tf-works.com/
Best bang for your buck for the 996 imo.
I also use their parts on a few other cars.

Makes my heart happy seeing all those RX-7s. Miss mine a lot. I had an 81 that I had the local RX experts (Rotary Performance in Garland TX) rebuild the engine and tranny in for me. Loved that car until I got hit and totaled it. Six months after it was totaled out I saw it beside the road with a for sale sign on it. I called the guy and asked him about it. He wasn't asking much for it but he gave me a song and dance about him being the original owner and it had never been in an accident blah blah. Up until that point in the conversation I was thinking about buying it since it was fixed and he was asking way less than what the insurance company gave me for it. After he went out of his way to lie to me about it I just couldn't bear to give him my money. Still kinda regretting that decision. Oh well.. back to Porsches!
Looks like youve got all 3 generations of rx7 there! I had a 79 for a few years - Loved that car! Some of my oldest sons earliest and most commonly spoken words were sport car while pointing at it (or not even seeing it, but wanting to go for a ride in it)...That thing was a hoot to drive - great memories
Yes that is their other brand but the Reinhart are custom built to order. They will build to best suit the car. For example a 911 on slicks will require different rates and dampening than one on oem tires etc.
No! Dont, go black, not on these rims, but if you absolutely must, be sure to go gloss black, DO have the rims separated and the barrel lip polished and cleared, make sure to clean the bolts thoroughly with like brake cleaner or acetone.
I had mine done professionally, I went for a silver similar in quality to the beautiful shimmery silver on the 40th Jahre 996 Carrera II rims, for the spokes, had the lip polished, and the barrels primed and cleared, both sides. I took the bolts home and cleaned and polished them, returning them to the shop prior to reassembly. The rims have been ceramic coated twice for extra durability and currently theyre shrink wrapped waiting for next spring.
Beautiful rims, nothing against black rims, just dont think it would work on these, but hey, I might be wrong and its all a matter of personal taste anyhow!
Either way, youve (weve) got great rims!
Cheers!
i personally would not do black wheels. I have a few sets for the racecar and it ruins every photo of the car.
VS
even dark metallic is big improvement
finally got a chance to pop this new feature on. Been sitting in the basement for about a year lol
Tossed a Forgeline on the back to get an idea how it would look with those.
Not in love with it yet. I think once the car is all white it will pull it together.

Not in the 911 but did a short hillclimb in Northern Michigan against a few 911's in my class, I figured I was gonna be smoked.
Somehow ended up top of the list in my class. Went back and forth with 2nd place by 1 hundredth of a second our last 2 runs.

Hey there Derek, I've been looking at putting the 996.2 Aerokit wing on a .1. Anyway we can get some more angles now that its on?
Bravo on the great work and write up to go along!
Since its your thread and u asked.... its my toterhome/rv. It started its life as an 1986, 359 otr truck. About 8 years ago a friend bought it with a 28' rv converted moving box and then i bought into it to transform it into what it is today. It has about 1.5mil miles, super10 trans and a singled rear w/ an air locker. Sleeper is a 10' fiberglass unit with custom subframe and a 6 bag air ride and rollback bed. Lots of cool upgrades allow us to do about 2 weeks in the dessert off the grid or sit track side in comfort.
When first bought.
Now
Yea i get extreme satisfaction rowing gears in the dually cummins truck, enough that i started doing hotshot transport on the weekends, mainly just moving racecars around the country for people relocating.
I got my cdl class a permit last winter and then things picked back up with work so I never had time to go do the driving test </3
I think the plan is to put the 18" forgelines back on with some larger tires for the summer. Driving the cars down to the dayton 24 hour and i think these 19s are best bet for long road trips. I dunno. Not in love with either of the wheel sets I have so gonna keep messing around.
Im a jdm car guys so all the appealing wheels to me are volk rays, weds, advans, ssr's etc. Just not sure i can shell out the cash for 5x130 Advan GT or Te37
would be sweet to redrill these
Started some prep for the cross country road trip to the Rolex 24.
Fresh oil. Bleed clutch. Inspect for leaks.
Had a broken rear end link so upgraded to some adjustables.
Car was mega out of alignment . 5/8 total toe in rear and same in the front. Dialed that in to 1/16 out front and 1/16 in rear.
Also polished up the headlights for like the 3rd time since ownership.
did a few changes just before we leave for Daytona.
took the air bleeder valves out of my forgelines so i can run a more appropriate road trip pressure . Mounted up some "fresh" yokos
real snug fit. Messaged the fenders out just a few more mm.
and there we go. No rub
Love the build thread... Love FDs, a friend of mine has gone through a few FC3s and FDs...always loved em. Something that made me lol, TE37s as "beater wheels"...I still laugh thinking about that.
Thanks!
Rx7s are my first love and the porsches follow closely behind. Really would like to get an air cooled into the collection.
Heres a few pics from the 3000 mile road trip last week.
Was snowing in Indiana when we left. Both of us were on Advan Track tires lol.
My buddy lives in northwest indiana and im in Northeast Indiana so we linked up on the south side of Indianapolis just outside of the snow storm
Stopped in Atlanta at the porsche museum and did some laps on the sims there.
some great stuff in there.
This thing is probably the baddest current car of all time tho.
Been so damn busy with other projects I havent had much time for the 911 this year. However I do have some new wheels for it in the works and a slight makeover in the process.
PSA in the market for a 3.4 drop out thats in good shape. The tip 996 we bought last year started knocking on the way home from buying it </3
pic from a few weeks ago before i took the forgelines off to try and polish up the lips. They got pretty crusty from the January drive to Daytona lol
Been super busy drifting but finally got around to turning this thing white.
Still need to button up some things and re glue the skirts on but im overly excited.
Also took off the RS wing and put a cup car wing on it. Im in love.
Other than that not much for updates.
BUT I am still looking for a good running 3.4 engine for my other 996 so I can get it driving. So if anyone has any leads on good drop out 3.4's for sale please let me know.
In the mean time heres what has been taking up most of my time. Helping run Drift Indy events and drifting my 90hp AE86
Went all the way out to West Virginia to drive this kickass track on the side of a mountain.
You Tube
Yea its an absolute riot to drive. Its too bad youtube has made kids think they need a nascar v8 and crazy angle kits to drift now a days.
heres a little more action in the 86
You Tube
on the little 90hp AE86 the tires lasted all day. I keeps cooling them down with water so that helps a bunch. They are just 14" tires also so not all that expensive.
in the midst of all the drift cars and home improvements I have had a few chances to work on the 996
Popped the Rays on so I can refinish the forgelines.
removed the skirts
cleaned the old tape residue
wrapped the rockers
re taped the skirts on.... that was fun.
You Tube
IF anyone has a lead on some of the early 996 tails with the amber turn lenses please let me know. I really just need a LEFT side tail.
Hopefully going to start driving this thing more often
First drive on the new wheels . Fresh oil change. Had to go for a rip.
You Tube
took it to work today. First time doing that in a year i bet.
ALSO
STILL LOOKING for a good 3.4 drop out thats a good runner for my wifes (i got married) 996.
1. congratulations on your marriage. Even though it's off topic on this forum it is a big deal.
2. very impressive how easily your gearbox shifts considering it's been outside and it's cold. I usually need 5 or 10 minutes driving to get that.
theres a 3.4 with 108k miles available on the market place here. The owner wants $7k for it. He said they are putting an ls swap on their car. Nice looking car is it biaritz or glacier.
Thanks Didy
I think it shifts pretty bad most all the time. I think it could use an updated or upgrades shifter cable setup. It seem like the shift gates are forever moving around, my confidence insn't there for sure.
No updates for a long while now. The car has just been sitting and getting filthy i feel ashamed. However I just got back from the rolex again and have a fresh flame lit to start working on the 996 again and hopefully find time to start driving it.
Seeing all the cool 911s last weekend in daytona is giving me some extra motivation haha.
Good pal from Drift Indy is working for Wright and gave us a nice show around.
The only real update worth posting about tho is the the 88' Freightliner Car hauler I picked up. Fits 1 car in the back!
Me and the wife are at the racetrack about 2 weekends a month so having a little RV area to call home at the track will be a nice upgrade. Excited to start the remodel of the interior. I already put an upgraded turbo and exhaust on it.
The beast has a 15 speed road ranger and Cat 3406b all mechanical <3 my favorite.
Ended up selling the wifes 911. Couldnt muster up the will power to spend that much money on rebuilding the engine for a tip car. RIP
Then mainly been extremely busy playing the role of Motorsports Director for a new adventure called Drift Appalachia which is a touge style drift series.

That and doing a little Drifting myself here and there still.

That thing is so badass. I remember you sharing it in here before. I love it.
Planning on putting dumps on the rear bags to lower it more to assist in loading my low drift cars.
Also wanting to do front air ride to lower it to look cool haha.

Looked into front bags but too many reports of it being too unstable and hard to fit on my chassis. I would look for a car hauler spring set up as they r very low.
i have heard that about single bag setups but also have heard single bag guys say its fine and guys just like to complain.
The Car hauler front axle is what lowers them down. Id consider it for sure but having the height ajustability would be sweet.
That pretty nice inside. Usually the dashes in old trucks r beat up. When we bought the truck it had a 28' moving box on it. 18' of living and a 10' garage for moto (with lift gate on back). It drove aweful becase it was so back axle heavy.
The current sleeper is 9' and its on a full air ride subframe. I would suggest u buy the best(expensive) seat that u can. Its a neccessary long haul luxury we have Sealy Postrapetic foam in our Barstrom seats.

Luckily this thing already has air on both front seats! I really want to do air ride on front axle. . . . SO i can lower it down and make it looks sick. Plus it will make loading cars easier if i have a dump in the rear too
