Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. Leading evidence: 'Install uaos' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'large bearing, they should also know' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Install uaos' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I think the bearings changed over sometime during 05.

The funny this is, that if they knew it was the large bearing, they should also know that it doesnt really need to be replaced just remove the outer grease seal

I wouldn't hold that in much regard, PCA lists a shop near me as a recommended mechanic, but from talking to the shop, they've never worked on a Porsche, have no experience with them at all.

This is not a job I would trust to a run of the mill oil change shop (of course, I woudn't trust a run of the mill oil change shop with an oil change).

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I was looking to get an IMS solution installed in a 2004 996 C4S, the shop quoted me $1900 CAD for R&R transmission and and $600 to grind out the bellhousing/install the bearing along with the other parts. I'll be supplying the IMS solution myself. Does this seem like a reasonable price to get it installed?
They used to be when I checked in 2021 but it looks like they're not listed on the website anymore. The nearest certified installer would be 3 hours away.
I had this done in Canada in 2018 and can give you details on cost. I also used a previously certified installer. You don't have enough posts to PM tho. LMK how I can provide you more info if you are interested.
I would also consider budget for other things like RMS, AOS, likely flywheel and clutch.
If I added you as a friend, would that work?
What do you think of the costs, am I around that range or a bit higher? The car has 34k kms on it so I don't expect it to need a new flywheel and clutch.
adding as a friend doesn't work. Happy to have a chat with you. I'm in Toronto. Post your contact info if you are comfortable or wait to have enough posts to PM.
Find a new shop. The engine case has to be notched to accommodate the oil fed line that goes to bearing, not the bell housing. And $600 to notch the engine case is ridiculous. It’s a 30 minute job, tops.
$2,500 Canadian is around $1,900 US which sounds reasonable.
Id be more concerned about their experience working on the 996 and how many IMS Solutions theyve installed.
To me thats more important than saving a few dollars and going to the low bidder.
I paid right at $2250 US in labor for IMS Solution, RMS, AOS, Clutch and oil change this time last year at an LN certified installer so that included the pre-certification stuff as well.
Mayo Performance in Euless. Very well regarded Porsche indy in this area and I think the only certified IMS Solution installer in Texas.

They really are a 1st class operation. They have a big get together once a month called Motoring Mavs at Mayo (Maverick is the local PCA chapter) and it attracts a large crowd of cars from 356s all the way up. It's worth checking out if you're ever in the area.
I hope it's a long way off for me but when the time comes for a rebuild, Mayo is my first choice hands down. Chris Amond has been through Jakes classes I believe and he's a great to work with.
I read it that way at first but then re-read it. The $600 is to notch AND remove and install the bearing and flange. I'm not sure why they'd break out the work like that but the total quoted seems perfectly reasonable - maybe even on the low side. I would strongly recommend using a shop that has been certified to do the install - or a shop that at the very least works on Porsches regularly. This is not a job I would trust to a run of the mill oil change shop (of course, I woudn't trust a run of the mill oil change shop with an oil change).

Unfortunately for the poster, there is no certified installer even remotely close. I live in the same city. Surprisingly, where I had mine installed, used to be certified. There was an installer very close to the poster, that also used to be certified. Often wonder how certification is lost.
One of them actually used to mention on their website about the certification. Now there is not even a mention of IMS.
Ah - yeah I suppose it could be for any number of reasons. There is great documentation available about how to install it - and I would say that a reputable Porsche shop that does quality work should be able to perform this with no trouble at all. I've also found that both Charles at LN and Jake at Flat 6 are great when it comes to providing insight and support where needed.
If certified installers break the rules, they can get booted.(Not performing a pre-qualification, installing The IMS solution on failed inspections, not providing the old bearing to LN)
There may be other less severe reasons for getting dropped from the list. (maybe not following up on training?)
It doesn't mean they can't install The IMS Solution, it just means they don't meet Jake's requirements.
They're definitely "tough" requirements, because Jake doesn't like mediocre or sloppy...but isn't that what YOU want for your Porsche?
I've considered installing The IMS solution for people locally...but at this time I'm not able to.(health reasons)
I doubt I'd ever be able to be certified, but I would follow their rules.
Thank you!
Yes, it is fully documented, and any good technician should be able to follow them.
But they have to be dedicated to doing the pre-inspection religiously. (and fail any engine that doesn't qualify and refuse to install The IMS solution)
Many just want to beat the book time and get to the next job quickly.
This is not a book time job.
Also the IMS Solution install requires special tools.
The typical IMS install tools are not sufficient...and home made tools won't cut it either.
I think in total I spent $400-$600 for all the IMS Pro tool kit and the IMS Solution tool kit.
They did great work. The only authorized LN IMS Solution shop in Texas. IMS, RMS, new Clutch and Flywheel. They also installed the UAOS for me as well. Of course they did all the checks like camshaft deviation, etc. No issues, No Complaints.
I did my IMSS myself with the regular (but extended) ims retrofit tools (not the faultless tool) so yes it can be done (you dont HAVE to use the faultless kit). Theres nothing particularly difficult about the job - especially if you drop the motor. Take your time and follow the directions. I believe if you buy the Solution directly from LNE, theyll loan you the tools to install it (you probably have to pay a refundable deposit).
For another reference point, I was just quoted $12,100 to replace clutch and install the IMS solution kit... I don't think that seems anywhere near the ballpark right? They want ~$4500 for the pre-inspection alone.
I think the bearings changed over sometime during 05. Its possible that the insanely high quote is to drop the engine and split the crankcase to replace the bearing. The funny this is, that if they knew it was the large bearing, they should also know that it doesnt really need to be replaced just remove the outer grease seal

FWIW
LN list authorized shops on its website.
I have never seen PCA recommeded shops other than body shops.
But each region have local and not so local indies that know what they are doing. Best bet is to join your local PCA region and start going out to events and asking what shops to go to. Guaranteed you will get a list of names. If you live out in the middle of nowhere, I would rather drive the car or tow it to a good shop that is farther away than hand it over to a local shop that may or may not know what they are doing or are charging ridiculous rates.
No that's how I got this recc, local PCA club. Lots of people here like this shop but I have had lots of experiences like this, also kind of rough work. I'm going to stay away.
