I used one made by "Renovo" (about £10-15 I think), in fact I used the same bottle on both my Boxster and (later) my 996 and still have plenty left.

The engine is hidden, even with a few mins test driving hard to diagnose some things, the engine needs to be warm enough for instance to check the condition of cooling system, which is another common problem.

I did the same after some beers using ebay. The flight to Scotland to pick up the 2.5 Boxster was fun and made it into an adventure. The car has now turned into a hobby, and I am spending much time on the hifi and getting the on board computer working (Yes, you have one installed). The missis loves it, just keeping fingers crossed it turns out to be hassle free. Have fun with it, and enjoy the car. BTW the 2.5 is quite light, so does have some benefits. Ian

One for sale outside someones house down the road from me for about £4500. Not an option due to not having £4 never mind the thousand bit, but I could see myself having a bit of bargain fun in one. Keep us updated.

POST 14Original post

DrMoriarty said: I have found myself wanting a bit more go out of mine. I also found this but then I have found that of almost every car I have ever driven long enough to start pushing the envelope of. As it goes it's just about hot hatch quick on the straights but as soon as it gets twisty there is little that can upset a well driven one, until the next straight. For the money I would have one over anything else with 2 doors and cloth roof in that price bracket. The only downside is that if you want to keep it tip top you will be paying out £1kpa minimum on servicing and bits (on top of tyres, go juice and insurance). If you are happy just to keep the wheels turning you could get away with about £500pa. But that would just be cruel to a fantastic car.

Dibble: Good on ya chap, I look forward to seeing some pics and hearing your thoughts on it not really, the haters clearly misunderstood my point. I don't know the age/spec/miles/condition/history/price balance of the specific car in question, but what I do know is that the price margin between the 2.5 and S is quite narrow compared to the vast difference in performance. Could probably have had a 3.2S, one reg letter older and a very few more miles for similar money. ETA - I really am used to stuff a bit quicker, so in my case the higher performance is important, although I appreciate that's not everyone's priority, to the extent that I got bored of my TVR 5litres 270bhp/tonne very quickly and now supercharged 390bhp/tonne. Horses for courses, that was the point I was making sorry that didn't come across. Enjoy it anyway - the handling will delight you Edited by Jammy Dodger on Tuesday 17th January 11:09

POST 17Original post

Jammy Dodger said: Could probably have had a 3.2S, one reg letter older and a very few more miles for similar money. I hear what you are saying but the difference in price is at least £2.5k whihc at these prices is over half the cost of the car in the first place - it's all relative. Interesting to see that prices seem to have hardened, I practically gave mine away but I wanted out and CBA with private sales for the sake of a monkey. I'd also suggest that the running costs, which with Pork of this age are going to be there, of a 3.2 are about 1.5x that of a 2.5. Without trying to sound all 'posh' at the price the OP is paying it's almost a disposable item, when you start to get to £6.5k+ min. for a 3.2 you are starting to talk about sums that would sting if the engine turned into a handgranade.

The 2.5 was phased out at the same time as the 3.2S was launched so you're looking at a chunk more cash for the faster car as it will inevitably be newer. Nevertheless a 986 Boxster is a great car in whichever configuration, so I'm sure the OP will enjoy the sweet handling of their new wheels.

I thought the S kicked in above the 2.5, before 2.7. Lol. I find credibility is vastly overrated

POST 27Original post

I like the purity of the original 2.5 Boxster. It's fast enough in the real world, although of course the chassis can handle a lot more power. I've only driven the 2.7 and 3.4 in anger on roads with corners and no traffic and actually slightly preferred the 2.7. Nicer sound, free revving, nimble. I imagine the 2.5 feels similar and at that sort of price what's not to like?

Even though I eventually succumbed and swapped to a 996 myself there's still plenty of times when I think fondly on my 986 BTW, regarding your comment about free motoring, in all my years with it the only thing I had to pay out for that wasn't standard stuff like tyres / pads / servicing (which is so cheap at an Indie!) was a clutch, but at 70/80k on the original I didn't even mind that. I was thinking about a 996 but this came up and allows me to try at minimal risk of a big loss a Paorsche, and a manual again, if it doesnt work out for me I'll sell it in 3-4 months and go back to autos ..... if it does work, the car world becomes my oyster again .... To tell truth, I think there's very few things things behind my switch to a 996 - to scratch the phenomenon of "the 911 itch", to get a glass rear screen (hard top) for winter (but how big a hardship is it really?) and to have the +2 seats for occasional use. Against that, the Boxster has two big boots (my 996 is a C4 so the one I do have is half full of 4x4 gubbins), handles better... I really don't feel there's too much between them and would recommend a Boxster all day long. Have a blast!

POST 40Original post

So are the 2.5's a safer bet than the 2.7's in terms of 'stuff going wrong? A couple of encouraging posts on here suggest running one with no abnormal costs other than the usual stuff. At £4-6k they look very tempting, and the "lack" of power wouldn't matter 2 hoots; mid-engined and rear wheel drive + roof off fun. Lighter too, yes? Which means easier on consumables for those days where a cheeky track outing is on the cards... The O/H wants a Boxster but, as i'm a total Porsche virgin, I get scared by all the IMS horror stories. Should I not be...?!

POST 41Original post

Nothing wrong with 2.5's of course but the early 2.7's offer a number of improvements with the E-gas throttle and the optional PSM being possibly the most notable. The trim is generally nicer on the later cars (more soft touch bits and fewer shiny buttons) and the hood has a liner. It's a dangerous game though as mechanical worries aside, there are so many incremental improvements each year (2002's had a nicer matrix display and electic trunk buttons!, 2003's have the glovebox and glass window etc.) that you can quickly talk yourself into buying the 2013 model. I wouldn't get too excited about the lower weight of the early cars thoughas the difference can't be much. Just remember the PH Boxster mantra: Don't waste money replacing the ambers and always run the smallest wheels that you can live with aesthetically! My top tip for early Boxster heaven is to run it without the (optional in the early days) lower centre console: GT3 style. Less weight(!) and that old school look and replace the front engine mount (if it hasn't already been done).

Glass rear screen is a very worthwhile upgrade (though not cheap if you're on a budget). The main reason being that you don't have to get out of the car and crease the window when you lower the roof which is a real pain in the arse!!! As well as freshening up the look of the car, it also has a heated window which is great and plugs into the hardtop socket, so uses the existing button on the dash. I went down this route when my plastic window cold cracked whilst using it in the winter. I had one fitted by a place in Bournemouth who were great and used one of these hoods from BAS international http://www.car-hood.co.uk/ Quality was as good as OEM in my opinion.

Cheers, £550 doesnt seem too bad and the rear window on mine I have been told has gone slightly milky in one corner, also I heard about the hood 'chop' when opening, sounds like a pain !!!!

POST 52Original post

Funnily enough the roof chop never bothered me that much when I had my Boxster, my two annoyances were fogging up in the winter and the milky / cloudiness over time. The former wasn't actually that bad (the screen's close enough to wipe with a cloth from the inside, then direct the middle heater-blower at it to keep it clear) and you can buy creams that make a big difference to the clarity of the plastic. I used one made by "Renovo" (about £10-15 I think), in fact I used the same bottle on both my Boxster and (later) my 996 and still have plenty left. If you set aside an hour or two, do small patches at a time as it tells you to, and give it some shoulder-welly the difference is very noticeable (although it'll never be perfect / as new). I never looked into it that carefully, but I gathered that a new hood with glass rear screen wasn't great. The canvas has to bend in a different way so as to avoid trying to bend glass, and the whole mechanism (and look) is different as a result...? P.S. For my sins I did change the lenses to clear (the fronts cost a bomb!)

As long as you're sure it's not cheap for a reason (real potential for false economies with buying porkies!) it'll be a blast. When buying my 996 I called plenty of official and indie garages asking if they'd take a look at various (private) cars for me, if brought to them, and in the end my usual indie (Northway in Reading) charged only something like £100 for an hour or two's inspection (including up on a ramp and a test drive). You get no recourse as such, except I believed they wouldn't risk their own reputation by letting you buy a pup, and these guys know what to look for after seeing hundreds of the things every year! (amateur mistake when I bought my Boxster - Peter Morgan seemed too pricey so I got the RAC in to inspect it. They didn't even drive it - "there was a nail in the tyre, health and safety..." and their helpful comments included "cigarette lighter not working properly" )

Well played. Was off line most of yesterday and so didn't get a chance to see this. 1. The Boxster chop - only required on cold days. Otherwise just watch through the rear view and you'll see if you are going to need it. Over 10degC though and you'll never need to IME, although would might want to. 2. Rads and front wishbones - if one goes and you can afford to do the other at the same time as it will follow as sure as night does day. 3. If you have one without the lower console praise the lord. With my size it made it so much nicer to be able to 'spread' my legs a bit more. Added to which it makes entering via the passenger door when some comedy f kwit has parked within a mm of the drivers side much easier. I also preferred the look, but that's me. 4. Have you got A/c? if so it will demist very quickly. 5. Don't bother with a glass rear window unless it already has one - for reasons stated by others. 6. In winter ALWAYS carry an old credit card with you. If the window seal freezes to the window the only way to free it without hair driers and the like is to use one of these. The window will bend enough to allow you to open and close it without 'dropping' but if you have an ounce of mechanical sympathy it hurts and the closing part requires opening the roof a little if you are inside the car and the worries that brings with the PAX door and frozen rear screen. 7. Mine had 17"s and I can only imagine how puny 16" would look. Be careful with the front springs as some owners have cut these to make the front look lower and meaner - MOT failure if spotted. 8. RMS - get a new one with every clutch change unless you see a pool of black under the car one day. A drip is nothing (they all do that sir), a drizzle is a problem. 9. IMS - forget about it, if it is going to happen it will and nothing any of us says will influence it. 10. At some point you most likely be blanked by some feckwit in a V reg 996C2 with 11billion miles who deems your car beneath them and another day you'll end up talking to the owner of a GT2RS all night long about your mutual love of cars as he compares his to the 599GTO he got last week. Get over it and the 1001 cleaver sodds who will tell you that it is a hairdressers car, is too slow. They bug you but worse is the one who says nothing but talks behind your back about how flash you are in your £20k sports car. Seriously I lost count for the number of times I was called a flash or similar by people driving cars that were worth 2,3 and 4 times mine in the trade.

The centre console delete is pretty simple if you wanted to go down that route later. Just involves removing the said parts and fitting a few simple blanking panels and possibly relocating a couple of switches (readily available as a kit). Let me know if you want details when you get the car. It will more than likely still have the console in place as I don't think many owners actually do this.

Thought of another one as well. Mine would blow the d/s seat fuse at any opportunity - better a fuse than a motor and I suspect it was due to the fact I would always be putting the back as far back as it would go against the bulkhead to get my legs in. Always carried 2 or 3 spares with me.

POST 67Original post

Very smart. Ocean Blue, I believe. Now then, for your first mod., get a decent lenght of dental floss and use a sawing action to remove the Boxster emblem from the boot lid. A bit of WD40 or petrol etc will encourage any residual adhesive to come off. A quick polish and a bit of wax later the rear end will look even more discrete!

Nice one. Looks like a decent buy. Rude-boy said: the 1001 cleaver sodds who will tell you that it is a hairdressers car, is too slow . My 'beef' with Porsche, and the 2.5 Boxster is simply that a 2 seater roadster, with a flat 6 engine of 2.5 litres capacity with Porsche heritage could, and should, have been faster. That's all. I'm sure it's still a very good car, especially at the money they're at nowadays.

POST 72Original post

^^^^ Can't argue with that. There are faster ones, but then it's more money to buy and to put right and maintain. I'd have a well sorted genuine 2.5 over an unknown 3.2 any day, one of the reasons I didn't swap mine for a 3.2 a couple of years after I had bought it when one was offered to me for a very attractive price to change (and that the 3.2 was in RFG )

Looked nice. Mine was Arctic Silver/Boxster tan and I have to say I still see that as the 'classic' Boxster colours. I think that they are a very underrated car, to the point where at these prices I'm begingin to wonder if I really should be looking at Polos and Seats for my shopping trolley or if there is a case for giving an old Boxster its last home. Then again I just don't think that I could throw an old rug full of hedge clippings into the boot of a Boxster with as little sympathy as an old hatch, negating the point a little...

Dibblecorse, that looks a cracking example - lovely colour combo too. After reading your thread, and posting up in shock / delight about the prices of vintage Pork, I've been doing lots of reading... IMS and RMS issues sound scary, and costly, but I think I am coming round to the idea of them being a possible, rather than a likely occurence. That the early cars are high(er) mileage and are likely to have shown their hand with these issues already is also some comfort. I think. To be honest, the Boxster does fit my criteria better than the others on my shortlist - useable for longer trips away, plenty of boot space front and rear, convertible, rear wheel drive, designed as a sports car not a car with the roof chopped off. It'll be a second car also, so high mileage doesn't matter, nor do a few liveable-with-niggles. I read a post somewhere on here where someone said when they owned their first Boxster, they hadn't even heard of the IMS/RMS issues. It occurred to me that sometimes being in possesstion of all the "facts" bad press can be detrimental to that old adage; Ignorance is Bliss. Enjoy the car - love to hear how you get on with it.

Enjoyable read (other than off topic handbags). I'm going to have a look at a couple today, along with a vx220 Edit: weather pending! Just looked outside to a little white stuff....

POST 91 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Enjoy shopping, have to say two weeks in and I'm really enjoying the car, outstanding value for money and apart from discovering the cd changer was broken it's proving to be a real joy and I'm getting no grief from my knee so that's a good sign as well. It handles beautifully although was a tad twitchy through the lanes to work yesterday at -7 but that's forgivable. Also fitted a new headunit with bluetooth and a usb port to make it easier to call mates and listen to tunes. Speakers are rubbish though. Only dashboard ones, none in the doors...... That's it thus far.......

POST 92Original post

Good stuff. I saw a 2.5 today in Sittingbourne, but it was a bit of a dog - nearly bald tyres, buckled and kurbed wheels, paint was okay. Only £5k though, so possible to put right.

POST 93Original post

Good work Dibble, I too got tempted by Cheap Pork over Christmas. I noticed prices were at a point whereby the risks were outweighed by the purchase cost and went for it, having never owned one before. I spent a little more as some have suggested and went for a 3.2 although I wasn't planning on doing, i just happened to stumble across a good one. All good so far touch wood. Put 2k miles on it in just over a month and beginning to wonder why anyone buys anything else at this price! I know I might regret saying that if something goes bang, but then again the costs of fixing my last nearly new ford were ridiculous - nothing is cheap to fix if it goes wring badly these days, unless you do it yourself, so I'm not sure the scaremongering is justified? Enjoy it... I hope I do!

POST 94 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

James, i begining to see what people mean, I bet the 3.2 is lovely, but for me the 2.5 id morethan enough (for now) ..... now need to work out whether later in the year I upgrade the car or the track bike !!!!!

Hello gents...I have been considering a second car. This thread has picqued my interest although I must admit I had already started looking at Boxsters. I'd looked at them in the past but never taken the step into Pork ownership (S2000 and Z4 / Z4M boxes got ticked instead). Not looking to spend a fortune and the 2.5 or 2.7 I would not discount as it is more about enjoying the drive than outright straight line speed. Can you turn the passenger airbag off (child seats) or was 'isofix and airbag switch' an option on these cars ever? In the meantime if anyone knows of a nice Boxster near me (East Midlands) please feel free to point me in that direction. Also, are there any Porsche specialists near me that you'd reccommend? Edit: What's the consensus on this one? http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3533235.htm Edited by texasjohn on Tuesday 14th February 09:12

I was in an unhappy marriage at the time so thought it was silly to spend a load of money on a car. Newly single me did end up spending more on semi sensible Skoda in the December. I remember thinking it seemed expensive compared to private cars but also cheaper than what dealers were selling. It doesn't hold as much appeal now at £14k and near 70k from a private seller though the MOT history looks clean. The fact it's parked like your staffie and feral kid owning recovery driver neighbours lorry is a red flag. There was a thread about it https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&... Just clicked and flicked through briefly. Then spotted the title. The story I read on here around when it first appeared for sale, PTS colour where someone had taken a pair of shoes into their OPC and said make it this colour. Which feels plausible.

Yes she's a business woman from Wales that has a habit of doing so and think the world is better for it. Do plan on sending them the generic 987 common/expensive repair email but think the price is pretty spicy as it is.

Surely in reality this is going to be a £15K Hartage engine rebuild and another few thousand to do other stuff "while you are in there". So £7K for the car, £1K for the new wheels, £15k for an engine rebuild and another say £3K for other bits and pieces to be done? Suddenly it is an unloved Tiptronic 996 for £26k? Might as well buy a 997 with a previous Hartage rebuild for that. I would imagine that until enough of these get broken that they are going up in value (probably less likely with a Tip) these are largely worthless in this state?

Cheaper rebuild options are available. Especially if you’re a dealer who is going to move a car on, not like its a keeper for him. He still has the (now)over priced 987.2 boxster after repairing the water damaged ecu from blocked drains (which happened in his ownership). He comes across as a nice chap, but should probably stick to his JLR products, doesn’t appear to make any money on his porsche passion.

We've had our poverty pork 5 years now, we paid £10k for her. Other than a self imposed suspension rebuild at 50k miles, a Danks exhaust & a gearbox switch, she's been 100% reliable. We took the her for a nice run out Saturday in the country to AV8 for breakfast. Sunday we go out for the day through the country to Wells in the Cupra Born. One is a £15k, 22 year old car, the other is a £45k, ultra modern EV. One is quiet, refined, has active speed control, lane assist, heated everything, every luxury you can image. The other has...well, a radio & rattles a bit a times!!! If I had to bin one, it would be the Cupra, as nice as it is, but the 986 chassis is sublime & it sounds lovely. Nothing else matters!

But for now it's all good. If it helps, my 3.2S was my only car for 4 winters, and did just fine without PSM or winter tyres. I had one hairy moment in that time, heading downhill on a single track back road covered in 3 inches of compacted snow (and obviously hadn't seen a gritter in living memory!). However I just about managed to avoid everything solid and unforgiving and so it got filed under "no harm, no foul". They are surprisingly capable ... provided you drive them appropriately for the conditions.

Looks nice and tidy, there are cheaper but very cleanly prepped. Extensive maintenance isn't that extensive being brakes, drop links and control arms so need a proper look. I've seen some at 7k with 6k spend in last 12 months as these aren't young puppies. Need to test drive and haggle, good luck

POST 124Original post

Thanks, looks like it's worth a test drive at least, I'd look at getting a specialist inspection too as I know they can get expensive with even minor issues, having previously had an early 2.5.

POST 125Original post

Ed.Neumann said: Nicely taken photos. That's all that anyone can tell from that advert. Think you can tell a fair bit more than that. Car is in good cosmetic order, which is not insignificant, though I agree with the poster above, the maintenance listed isn't terribly extensive and there's plenty that could need doing. But personally think spending on a car that's going to look good when you're done is always a bit easier to stomach. Like the fact that it's an early car with the original cluster that has the digital speedo in the centre, plus mechanical front and rear releases rather than the switches. Extended leather too, which makes the interior so much nicer. Quite like it. Definitely worth a look.

POST 126Original post

housemouse said: Ed.Neumann said: Nicely taken photos. That's all that anyone can tell from that advert. Think you can tell a fair bit more than that. Can you? Paint looks good in those pics, but can't see how the arches, jack points, sills are holding up. What about the suspension arms? Top mounts? Dampers? Subframe bushes? Transmission mount? All things I would want to be tip top for a car at that price? Then how are the brake lines? Coolant lines? Climate lines, especially around the joints? Clutch still nice and light and good to use? Flywheel OK as they are at the age where some are starting to delaminate? Gearbox? Still OK as lots of these cars can need work on them? Roof OK? All nice and tight still? How is that rear plastic window, nice and clear still and not dried out? It looks really nice, and like a good base, but these cars can soon eat through thousands to get them decent, so if someone doesn't know inside out then don't just buy because it looks nice thinking because it a higher price than others out there it is not going to cost you a lot of money. It may not, but my point was go and see it and see for yourself.

POST 127Original post

Well it wasn't as good as it looks in the photos, but by no means was it bad. There were a few minor scrapes needing polishing, the front bumper needs paint and a few car park dings need sorting. The boot was very difficult to close properly and the clutch was pretty heavy. The drivers seat damage was strange, but easy to get fixed. I did a bit of searching and found the car previously for sale by Flat Six Classics and contacted Sean, who very kindly told me how good the car was when he sold it in October 2022. I would guess that it's been unloved since then and I'd worry about the mechanical stuff hiding underneath. The exhaust sounded good (it had the backbox mod with the extra pipe) but there was a very slight hesitation from the engine that you could barely detect. It probably just needed a good Italian tune-up. I actually thought the price was OK looking at other cars of similar mileages?

POST 128Original post

I think it's a bit irrelevant to check the cars condition in that age (over 25) by body work really, or cosmetics. If you can try to get into a ramp and book 45 mins check with a Porsche specialist, they will literally tell most things to look out for. The engine is hidden, even with a few mins test driving hard to diagnose some things, the engine needs to be warm enough for instance to check the condition of cooling system, which is another common problem.

POST 129Original post

Interesting. A bit disappointing. I thought that dealer might be one of the better ones. I think the problem with a 986 is that it's difficult to maintain margins and prep a car properly for sale. Someone like Sean at Flat Six Classics (have bought a car off him some years ago so have some experience there) can possibly make it work by really specialising in 986s, being good at spotting the best cars that need less prep / reducing the cost of prep by really understanding them and doing work in house / knowing exactly what to pay for the car in the first place. A generalist dealer is going to struggle with all of this, even with buying the right car. So unless they get lucky and buy an absolute minter, it's going to be difficult. I guess it goes to show the value of either really knowing your stuff or buying from one of the few really knowledgable dealers.

To be fair, they did say they were selling on behalf of a customer so didn't prepare it to the level they normally would, which in turn would have added considerably to the asking price. They have a similar car fully prepped that is up for 2K more, so that shows the difference. I'm not knowledgeable enough myself to buy without full confidence in the dealer prep, so buying from somewhere like Flat Six Classics would be the best bet.

POST 131Original post

As I said.... Ed.Neumann said: Nicely taken photos. That's all that anyone can tell from that advert. These cars are now £15k cars. Arguably more. £8k car with £7k spent on it to get it minty fresh, or buy one that has had all the works needed over the last 2-3 years for £15k or get lucky and buy one for £8k that someone else has spent £7k on over the last couple of years. Either way, they are £15k cars now. There will obviously be some outliers in that, but in general, they are now going to cost that sort of price, whether you pay it or the previous owner has, whether they are considered worth that is another matter of course. But they are a Porsche that is a quarter of a century old that has lived in the UK, with everything that brings to car ownership. It is not going to be cheap.

You'll definitely get better value buying privately. You'd get a properly nice private 3.2 for the price of that 2.5. So, the question is how much do you value someone sourcing a good car for you for effectively £4-5k? Unless you're very price insensitive, buying a more or less forever car and they had something really specific spec wise that's hard to find, I think you're better off buying privately and having the car taken to a good specialist for inspection prior to purchase. If you do that, buying from somewhere like F6 Classics really only offers a bit less effort plus some short term arse covering should a car prove to have a major fault that didn't surface at inspection. That said, I can see the appeal in taking a fair deal of the stress and leg work out of buying something like a 986. A lot of them are pretty tired at this stage and buying privately is often pretty tedious dealing with misdescribed cars, unrealistic vendors and so on. The more informed and hands on you are, the less value there is in the specialist dealer route.

But if it’s a really clean car you want, you can weed out most before taking the trouble of a viewing, let alone PPI I think.

In isolation you might pay £12k but if you look at advertised and sold prices and the condition of cars you should quickly realise that £12k is an owner who clearly values their car highly. It is not necessarily a benchmark. You could also pay attention to the fact it has no bids and 1 day left and a starting bid of £4k. This is useful information right in front of you.

There are always cars like that offered by vendors totally detached from reality. Those aren't the problem cars when it comes to a search, it takes all of five seconds to discount that barried out shed - it's making it really easy for you! The problem cars, I think, are the ones that look nice in photos and seem like a good proposition but turn out to have a load of deferred jobs that need doing.

I'm going to see this one at the weekend: https://www.boxa.net/topic/103527-2000-986s-in-arc... Not the cheapest, but the amount of work done in the last 7 years by the owner is very impressive and would hopefully leave me without much to do for a while at least. Any thoughts?

POST 155Original post

Better to buy a car like this with obvious care and interest and recorded history available then a similarly priced one from a dealer with some ticks in a book.

POST 156Original post

Looks like the owner got most necessary service/repairs sorted, and decent price imho. I would personally look at cooling system and it looks like its all sorted already in 2025. (Water pump, belts, rads and resistors all you need for a peace of mind driving...)

POST 157Original post

My thoughts too, better to know that work has been done even if it's DIY.

POST 158Original post

After a couple of Porsche-less years, a period of healing for the finances and marital harmony following the pain my previous 996 inflicted, I have taken the plunge and bought a 987.1 Boxster.  It's a 2.7 manual, Lapis blue over black, Bose, Cruise control, 18" Boxster S wheels, Boxster S twin exhaust tips, on 56k miles and has been in the same ownership for 11years. With any luck this one will be less problematic. In the interim I've been tinkering with a 1972 Alfa Giulia GTV 2000 with a twin spark engine which I'm in the process of swapping to a standalone ECU and throttle bodies which still needs finishing, there s a thread on here somewhere about that which needs updating!

POST 162Original post

What's the poverty barrier moved up to these days? Just picked this up for what I think is good money. '07 987.1 S Manual, heated sports stone leather interior with extended leather, bose, sports wheel, cayman S 18s on MPS2s! My first Porsche and finally learning what all the fuss about, such a special car this one. The sounds, feels and smells, putting the top down in now our weather is temporarily outdoor livable. Whole family in love with Polly the Porsche already. Came with great provenance and in amazing condition for a 19yr old car. Can't get enough of the induction bwarp getting 2nd to 3rd shift right. The 10k I saved getting the euro5 330d salloon instead of a euro6 estate pretty much paid for the boxster. Pretty happy with my 12 cylinder combo right now. And no,I never intended to get 2 grey cars, I just buy the best ones I can find that aren't white.

POST 163Original post

That looks super nice. A 987.1 3.2 in a nice spec is, i think, the best value Porsche of literally anything available right now. Fairly reliable, and you could spend 4x times as much on, say, a 997.2 S and you are only getting slightly more car.

POST 164Original post

It's a 3.4 S, and yes decided on it for thr near 997 experience for less than half the price.

POST 165Original post

Very nice but £10k + is poverty pork in my book.

POST 166Original post

Thanks, as I thought. Wonder how long it can go on, a 997 in this condition would be almost triple I imagine. Get them while they are cheap, folks.

POST 167Original post

Lovely car, the 3.2 is a great car and the sports seats are an excellent option to have as well.

POST 168Original post

housemouse said: Dimebars said: How are Flat Six to deal with generally? They have an early 2.5 for sale just now that seems to tick a lot of boxes, but is definitely spicy on price. Looks like it's been listed since January at least so they've had it a while. I found good, albeit at the time there was cause to treat me preferentially, so my experience may not generalise. I found Sean good to deal with me being a seller and he has certainly carved out a niche in 986 and 987s. It is frustrating as a private seller when even if you take great pictures and put together a well written ad, priced very reasonably, you might struggle for weeks to sell. Even for something priced in the low to mid teens where you'd hope to find a enthusiast cash buyer. And then a dealer comes along, buys for less than you'd originally hoped for yet seems to flip within a week or two for an apparently easy £3-4k+ profit. But there are a few reasons for this. Despite inspecting they are taking on risk that something unseen is on the way out, and with overheads, financing, tax on profit etc they need a minimum mark up to make sense. I guess he will be choosing the top 25-30% of cars on average and specialising that way might make it easier to filter out sub standard cars that end up at regular car dealers. And, finance aside, the eventual retail punter is often someone who isn't willing to take a risk on a private sale where they are screwed if it goes pop 5 miles down the road or the next day, or week. I think this is especially true on ageing Porsches vs perhaps a newer hot hatch of similar value with less likelihood of big bills. I guess the trouble is if you both buy and sell with dealers you are going to take a hit every time you swap, even on low depreciating cars. I bought my Cayman privately in the first place (a gamble yes, and especially since I didn't get an inspection, although a lot/most of the major stuff had been done on it) so actually only lost about a grand on it over 2+ years.

Cool thread, I have just bought some poverty pork too. 2005 987.1 3.2 S for £4800. It was advertised as needing a few bits (coolant pipes etc) but passed it's MOT on head light re-leveling and a new windscreen washer pump. It's booked in for Coolant crossover pipes in July, had new tyres fitted. Drives well. I've given it a major service and multi stage machine polish as it had sat for a while. Also had the headlights refurbished by Rennlens in Fleet as they were faded inside, rather than outside. Coolant pipe weap Headlight refurb

And it's harder to find 997s in really nice condition, too, especially early ones. Boxsters more likely to have been kept as weekend toys, I'd suggest, 997s more likely to have been driven a bit more like a daily. Hard to get head around a shagged 997 being worth 2x-plus a perfect 987. The value of immaculate 987s is pretty bonkers compared to 997s, that's for sure. Fundamentally the same cars, just variations re engine capacity and location. They do drive a bit differently for sure. But it's pros and cons, preferences etc, not one clearly being the better car.

I do genuinely laugh out loud sometimes and how bloody amazing it is a bright yellow near as damnit 300 horsepower flat six Porsche Sports car. For so little money. It's absolute crazy. Its got the Lobsters, extended leather (makes SUCH a difference on these and 986s), memory seats and BOSE. Done a few bits on it, wheels and tyres, it's on Koni dampers, Cayman R springs and roll bars, all new bushes, mounts, ball joints etc, and all the geo properly setup. Did the full front end coolant pipe replacement (DIY able!) last year, it's got an intake and exhaust on it so it sounds pretty fruity, loads of character and flat 6 howl that changes thru the RPM range. Its been round Donnington, drove the wheels off it at Silverstone Porsche Centre, even dabbled in hil climbing, I drive it in traffic on the M62 to work regularly, school run, all sorts. That is awesome in yellow! Great ownership story, congrats. Hope you are right side of the pennines. Mine could definitely do with a suspension upgrade but probably more modern tyres first. Prev owner put new original spec N4 rated Michelin Pilot Sport 2s on. I'm sure they were amazing at the time and give the car provenance but they really dont have the compliance or composure of a modern MPS like a 5. Its a shame theyve got 6mm+ tread, would have preferred they were knackered and got some more money off the car.

Its more a 3rd car, a caterham alternative for me, than a second car like a Boxster. The Lotus was undoubtedly more fun 10% of the time, I loved it, but you just can't use them as much for the regular faily driving, it was awful on the motorway in the wet and that limited the miles I did. An Evora however is definitely on the list for the future, the entry level has been hanging around £30k for a while so a bit more commitment required. Its just such a shame they never did an open top variant of the Evora!
