Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Hi all, I'm in the dilemma whether to buy a 3.2 986 or 2.7 987 as the title says. The 986 costs 10k with 70k miles and lots of work done to it, including IMS , RMS, clutch and flywheel AND it's being sold by a Porsche specialist. The 987 costs 14k with 45k miles, in pristine condition, and no significant work done. Both with full service history. I've test driven the 987 in question, but haven't driven any 986 ever. The 987 is lovely and it being my only model of Porsche I've driven, my gripe with it is the pedal positions being a bit too close and very offset to the left. I'm not sure I can fully adjust to that, but whatever, it's a compromise I can make for the sake of the rest of the driving experience. Question is - given that both are more or less going to very reliable, which do you think is better value? I'm not too bothered about the power, more so about the fun factor, handling and build quality (I like a very stiff and solid feeling chassis and no creeks, squeaks or rattles). The price is a factor, I can afford the 987 but prefer to spend as little as possible given today's financial climate. Cheers, Nik

POST 2Original post

I've owned both, I'd take the 987 25k newer, more refined chassis and at not much more money.

POST 3Original post

The 986 and 987 are both great models of Porsche, so it really comes down to what you plan to get out of it. The 986 is cheaper and has undergone more work which could potentially make for a more reliable car if all of the repairs have been done properly and the car was well-maintained before. However, the 987 is newer and has been taken better care of, and is still in pristine condition. I think that if it's a fun factor and handling of the car that's more important to you, then spending a bit more on the 987 could be a good investment. And while the pedal positions may be a bit off, you can always look into ways to make them more comfortable, like aftermarket pedals or modifications. The stiff and solid chassis is something that both the 986 and 987 should be able to deliver. All in all, if the 987 is within your budget and you feel like you would enjoy the driving experience more with it, that would be a good option. If you're on a tighter budget and willing to invest in maintaining the 986, that could be a great option as well. Consider both models carefully and see which one you think would make for the best overall value for you.
