Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

17 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

On my Cayman S, the drivers side outer boot seems to not be tight enough. I've been cleaning lot's of cv grease off the inner part of the wheel. It's slowed down quite a bit but I'm worried that too much of the grease has come out. So, question is, can I buy a replacement band, snip this one off, squirt more c/v grease in, and then put a new clamp on? That sound right? It's not making any weird noise when I spin the wheel, so I'm confident the cv joint itself is ok. Recommendations?

POST 2Original post

Install a new boot to replace that cracked one?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 19273756

It's not cracked that I can see.

POST 4Original post

The concern would be if grease is coming out, then debris(water, dust, stones) likely are penetrating in. Which could ruin the bearings. You could : -remove and rebuild -remove and replace -remove, repack, new boot(not optimal) 25+ years old, Id replace. Unbolt and put new one in. Its not too bad to replace. I would NOT go aftermarket. Tried that, poor quality. Its a Porsche. Mechanical parts I always go OEM, best fit.

POST 5Original post

I would just replace the boot/hose clamp. Replacement of the actual CV joint is overkill IMO, if you dont have symptoms. Even if you do have debris that could cause wear you would most likely have plenty of notice down the road, its not likely to be catastrophic. Youre fine putting a little more grease in there. Research and be attentive to signs of CV joint failure, so you can know when to address it down the road.

POST 6Original post

You don't need to replace the CV joint, but you do need to remove the axle, remove the cv Joint, clean it up, replace the grease and install a new cv boot. Them's standard operating procedures.

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 19273773

I guess well have to trust your judgment, but your photo really looks like your boot is torn (towards the outboard side, where the leaking is occurring). Assuming it is torn, plan to replace it only. However, check the CV shaft itself. Excessive slip from inside to outside? Is there excessive slip as you turn the wheel? Any clicking sound? These are all standard checks of the CV axle. If none of that is present, then just change the boot after adding grease as others have said.

POST 8Original post

99.98% chance the boot is cracked. The leaked grease would NOT migrate back towards the drive flange if the small diameter end of the boot were leaking yelcab has told you what you should do IMO

POST 9Original post

Your post title could have said, everyone, look at my crack.

POST 10Original post

I would clean the flange (to the left of band clamp)with your solvent of your choice and put some miles on the vehicle, then reassess.

I think a plier type would be easier to use in the event it needs to be fitted while installed. I know you will have it out of the car though.
