It will determine how much "overfull" you can run the oil level for Track Work.....It doesn't really effect the M96/7 if you drive it like a Granny....

I have been preaching the "blow-by test" for a while now as the quickest and best test for engine health on the M96 engine ( besides doing comprehensive oil pressure test and oil analysis)

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have been preaching the "blow-by test" for a while now as the quickest and best test for engine health on the M96 engine ( besides doing comprehensive oil pressure test and oil analysis) Above normal blow-by has several repercussions on the M96/7 engine, beside a slight loss in Torque, you can have an increase in oil consumption, smoking on start, and overloading the already weak OEM AOS... Case in point :: Aaron bought this 2006 Cayman about a year ago as his track toy . He has track it a lot, it runs well with good power and good oil pressure and no engine noise, but has had some smoking on start-up ever since he got it. He has a Youtube Channel "HELP me DIY" with lots of DIY videos on Porsche and BMW, but he is not a professional, but is a very willing DIY'er... About 9 months ago I convinced him to do the Blow-by test on the Cayman...( video of the blow-by test below) and got a blow-by value at WOT of 170 Liters per Minute ...This is way excessive for a healthy engine ....The engine is now disassembled for a rebuild and here are pictures that show the cause of high blow-by readings... The engine is getting some big Nickies and big pistons during the full rebuild.. Here is the Original Thread on the blow-by test I developed for the M96/7 engines ... https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...-by-test.html# Cause of 170 LPM blow-by cyl#6 cause of 170 LPM blow-by cyl #6 Here is the video of the blow-by test .. Wow! I loved the glove ! Its amazing how something that seems like a fine idea at the time can go so wrong, so quickly! Super informative and well done video

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah, Aaron called me in a panic to tell me about the glove fiasco, I laughed my *** off and told him to just see if he can find it, latex would probably just get chewed up and spit out the exhaust pipe, I've seen much worse get sucked into engines... Good lesson for him though...

POST 5Original post

Aaron is great. His videos helped me in my lead up to deciding to buy my 986 S and I enjoy watching them each time I'm doing something or other to my car.

Seconding that this is a very useful test on any engine, not just M96/97. We had a new Lang Racing S54 fail in just a few hours, it was pushing so much positive crankcase pressure the valve cover gasket blew.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Right !! Even new engines can have excessive blow-by/rings not seating well....

POST 10Original post

Wouldn't a leakdown test accomplish the same?

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 19277873

This test is much better, faster, and easier than a leak down test... The leak down test is static, the blow-by test is dynamic. Dynamic is always better than static unless the Dynamics make it too hard or move to fast or are too complicated.....The leak down test will certainly show if the rings are not seating when static at only about 100-150psi, but the blow-by test is conducted at 10x that pressure ( 1000-1500 psi) also there is a thing that can cause rings to "flutter" at high RPM and lose seal ( but modern very thin rings are less likely to flutter at high RPM unless the piston ring grooves are severely worn). And the blow-by test is so easy to do, anybody can do it with very inexpensive equipment/tools..
