Hey guys! I'm a new member and I've looked for an answer to this question and I know there is a lot of discussion on the topic but nothing to this specifically that I can find. I just recently purchased a 1998 base
986
and the owner had no idea what type of oil was last put in it. It looks clean (he did not drive it much) but I'd like to start fresh and change it. I've heard that for older Boxsters standard oil might be better than synthetic? I'm not sure if that is true but I don't want to switch it back if synthetic is what is in it now. At the same time if regular oil is in it now I'd like to stick with that. However, as mentioned, I don't know what's in it. Any recommendations for this situation? Many thanks in advance.
Ryan.
If it's that important to you send a sample for evaluation, they'll know whether it's synthetic as well as wear indicators within the report, Blackstone is one such lab. Or save your money, use the product you desire and don't worry about it, the proper level and frequency of changes is a better thing to monitor, just use a quality product specified by
Porsche
in your manual.
Mobil 1
isn't considered the best choice but it's easy to get, relatively cheap at Walmart and a recommended lubricant. If you change it a lot this is a fine choice.
ryan11-You need to know what important characteristics of oil play a part with the
M96 engine
. Jake Raby of flatsixinovations has a series of free videos that you can look at which helps you know the important areas that oil protects. Then read and use the oil blog 540RAT showing the significance of oil wear protection. You will then get an idea of a less expensive oil that has fantastic wear protection to protect your rod bearings, cylinder walls and most important piston skirts.
If you do not intend to race your car, then engine oil heat, like over 275 degrees, should not be a factor, so you can use the top rated wear protection product suggested by 540RAT. I would then get the equipment to be able to change the oil in your garage, including hand scissors to open the paper oil filter looking for harden metal or non metal particles.
Quaker State
5W-30 is the winner and its not expensive. Just read the blog and scroll to the Wear Protection section. This blog was updated on Mar 27, 2022. It is not supported by any oil company.
Its your engine, so change the oil often and cut open the filter to confirm no particles of any sort. Jake Raby suggests 3500 oil change intervals. He says that clean oil is best if the
IMS
seal has been breached by engine oil.
WOW! That 540RAT guy goes DEEP, I love it. Thanks to you both for the info, that's great.
