To add to my previous post, I had a case of the dull thud on shifting and fast desceleration which turned out to be a rear suspension bushing (changed under warranty, fortunately).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have recently become an owner of a low mile 2005 911 Carrera S. I have driven Porsches in the past but never owned one. Being a new owner I am not sure if the following is normal or not. Car is a six speed manual. Under acceleration and shifting there is slight clunk/thunk sensation on gear changes. This come from the rear of the car, or at least I believe it does, we all know noises in cars can be sneaky. At any rate, car shifts fine, no issues at except that thunk. It is more noticeable the more aggressive one grabs shifts. I don't know if this is a normal aspect of the 911 or if there is somthing I should be looking at. Thanks much, Chris

POST 4Original post

Allot of them kinda feel like that, I service quite a few and believe I know what you mean..... but could be a sign that the Trans mount is worn......But you can usually feel that by standing on the throttle in first from a low rpm after in gear..

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah I was thinking either a worn/broken motor or trans mount. What am looking at to fix this ballpark. I know the parts are not that bad but I assume there is fair bit of dropping stuff out of the arse end of this thing. Thanks much, Chris

POST 6Original post

See if you can get someone that is familiar with these cars to drive it. Could also be Dual Mass flywheel. Depending on how smooth your shift is. Might be normal.

POST 8Original post

i agree on having someone drive it who is familiar with them..... if you are in gear, and stand on the throttle does it clunk? that is the telltale sign.....it'll feel like someone is hitting the car underneath just behind the front seats with a rubber hammer..... but as i've said, i've driven quite a few 997's and they just feel like that if i understand your description... they aren't hard to change......maybe a 1/2 hour with a lift and air tools...

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

If I am in gear with load on the engine I don't get a clunk so to speak. Only on changing gears and generally only if I don't match up revs just right. The dull rubber mallet thunk is about right although I think I feel it from the rear. Gearbox is smooth, clutch is smooth car goes like a scalded ape just a bit of a mechanical thunk now and then I am not used to. Will try to get somebody more familiar with Porsche's to give it a drive. Its a hell of car though. Wow for "just a Carrera S" this thing moves and sticks something fierce. Thank you very much for the input. Chris

POST 10Original post

Don't discount the half shafts or rear suspension linkage. Easy to eliminate before you get into the more complex stuff.
