I used to have a 2000 Outback. Went over 200K miles in 10 years. 3 repairs: Power window button, signal lever, right driveshaft. That's it! Car was bulletproof. Used it to pull a 2000 lbs. boat out of the water on a steep beach at the cottage. Never an issue. In 2010, it was replaced with a 2010 Forester. Got stuck pulling same boat out and transmission (not CVT) blew at 70k miles. Hated that car. Was replaced with a Jeep Wrangler in 2015. Now it is time to replace the Wrangler - getting a bit too high to step into for my in laws and my giant dog. Also, the wrangler has been bullet proof in 150K miles. Only repair has been a thermostat and battery. It needs winter tires, gotta figure the clutch must be close to being done etc. So, considering a Subaru Outback Wilderness. Only concern I have is towing. It is rated to tow 3500 lbs. Here are my towing needs: Put 2500lbs. bowrider in water in May, pull it out in September and parked 200 feet from water. Trip to boat dealer every 5 years for water pump - 15 miles away. Pull 1250 lbs. boat to Lake Ontario 2X per year for fishing. 25 miles each way. Pull 1200 lbs. utility trailer with an ATV about 500 miles every year. Pull a 3500 lbs. utility trailer (1 yard of sand), 30 miles round trip to dump sand on the beach So, max towing annually is less than 1000 miles, within vehicle limit. I'm concerned about blowing up a CVT transmission. (my other car option is a Jeep Grand Cherokee - can certainly tow but I just find it awful to drive and a 30k example rattles everywhere). Any subaru drivers on here that tow?
