Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, does anyone know much about the sports exhaust that's switchable? Is is possible to fit it to a series 2 996? is it just sound, or performance as well? Any ball park costs figures? Will be very interested to hear your opinions.  Any info would be great thanks Tim

POST 2Original post

You could look at Varex stuff but as I've not used them I can't tell you if they are any good or not.

POST 3Original post

Check out Sharky`s products,a mate has a switchable bypass system on his gt3 and its awesome http://www.sharkwerks.com/products.php

POST 4Original post

Tim I had it installed on my 996.2. I brought it in from the US and had it installed back in 03 for 5.5k It is pure sound no performance but plenty of grin factor. Regards Arthur

POST 5Original post

I turned my standard exhaust into a bypass exhaust much the same as the expensive PSE but at a cost of about $250, it is not switchable but the sound is the same and it is a very nice sound. By the way I'm speaking from the experience of owning a 2002 996  with PSE and then adapting the standard exhaust on my 1999 996. It's all good but personally I'd never pay the $$ just to make it switchable.

Was it done at a muffler shop?  Did you have to take the mufflers off, or did they do the entire job from start to finish for @250? Is this how yours was done?

POST 7Original post

I had a sports exhaust on my 996 (not switchable) & it was just fine. Not sure you are going to get much improvement from a switchable exhaust on a 996.

Oz951 was my former ID. My exhaust was done along similar lines between the middle and lower pipes. As per the following  pic.  Although the pic shows Fabspeed catalytic converters, those are sitting on my shelf at the moment and the stock cats are currently fitted. So for those familiar with the sound of my car it comes from stock cats and stock mufflers modified as follows. There is no power increase from this mod. The mufflers are removed from the car to do this. No need to remove the bumper. I took the mufflers into a shop (an engineering/fabrication firm) to have the work done.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thanks Kelly, I'll get around to getting it done and by the sound of it I will take the mufflers off myself. thanks for the info Tim

POST 10Original post

I did mine to emulate the factory switchable pse. It costed around $1000 even thought I did all the labour myself. Sounds good from inside the car. I need to find someone to drive it for me so I can hear it from outside. Hard for me to compare to other systems as I have never heard any other. Maybe there is someone out there willing to get together and compare.

POST 11Original post

I reckon it only matters how it sounds to you the driver. Doesn't matter how it sounds to the pedestrians or other drivers in my book. If it did, I would have kept the C63, now there was an exhaust sound.

POST 12Original post

Thanks Harold, I did not think of it this way. Now I think it is the greatest noise in the world.

Park it in Wembley Road and in 5 mins you'll hear it driving away The SMT on 22nd will be a good opportunity or I could meet you sooner depending which side of town you're on.

POST 14Original post

I am on the southside. I will do my best to make it to the next SMT. Getting together sooner is also a good option. I am free most afternoons.

Does doing this to you muffler cause a drone??   I would have thought that given it's exactly what Porsche do (other than the on/off valve) it shouldn't be a problem? Has anyone had any experience with a drone? Tim

Wayne, You've expressed the desire to do a pse mod on your car similar to mine. It is great that you liked the result on my car. However, it is possible the oem pse on you model is done differently (see attached picture). It appears to bypass stages 2 and 3 instead of the entire muffler. And since your car has a higher compression rate (I think) you may get the same result. With possibly throatier sound. Worth looking into. If you decide to do the same setup as mine the muffler shop was muffler mad in browns plains. More than happy to give you some pointers so you don't do the same mistakes I did.

POST 17Original post

Thanks AM - I like the idea of it being switchable but thinking like the earlier posts adding the switch and values would be a great option but increases the cost significantly.  Might just go for the gundo hack without the switch.
