Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Used a 1mm artists brush and painted the worn areas on the air con buttons.

I also used the dye on my door trim handles, handbrake, seat bolsters etc, top stuff.

There's some photos on the thread I posted the link to above of people who have tried that solution, some with great success and others not so much, it's just a shame they used such a cheap finish on the buttons in the first place.

Suggestion
Bought a black leather dye kit off ebay for about $30, from the UK - bespoke leather repair kit I think it was called.

Suggestion
Just make sure to tape it well with painters tape, sand it thoroughly with a light grit paper to remove all the rubber material and use a flat black with a wide, fine bristle, model paintbrush from a hobby store or arts supplies.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Guys,
The only blemish I have on my car is the aircon toggle switches (fan and temp buttons) which have gradually been scratched and now look terrible.
I just got a quote here in Singapore for them to be refinished that is cheaper than a replacement unit from the US....but not by much!
For the 997 guys or James.....is there a service in Australia that can repair these before I shell out $300 up here? My car is leaving Singapore next month so I dont have a lot of time.
Hi Hounddub,
Did you get a solution for this?
Mine are ok at the moment but I can see the first signs of wear on one corner.
It's probably my only disappointment with the car in terms of build quality
A mate of mine is looking at 987 Caymans that have "similar switching gear" and it seems a common problem.
Yep, let me find the link

At the end of the day after reading the whole thread I
almost
followed the instructions to take them out and send them to
Sticky No More
as his work looks perfect.
But then the user Slammp replied and posted his solution
and I followed it and did the repair to the switch (fan one) that needed doing and it looks brand new other than no sticker. I am going to get Marti to make up a little fan and temp symbol stickers and do the other switch and it will be complete.
It took like 15 minutes tops to fix it. Just make sure to tape it well with painters tape, sand it thoroughly with a light grit paper to remove all the rubber material and use a flat black with a wide, fine bristle, model paintbrush from a hobby store or arts supplies.
Cheers Al
If you want them perfect then send them to sticky no more, the second pic in that thread shows the finished job and they are perfect. I don't have any pics but will see if I can come up with something from my phone camera during the daytime but the finish isn;t like the sticky no more as they are sprayed with an airbrush where with the simple fix you are use a fine paint brush..
Cheers Al
The buttons used in the early 997's were rubber coated which reacted poorly with natural oils and hand lotions. I had the same problem and was going to try this solution:
http://www.climarepair.com
but was fortunate to have my AC unit replaced under warranty.
It's cheap, DIY and most guys on the forums who've tried it reckon this works well. For the price I reckon it's worth a go.
I'd be keen on someone on this forum having a go and providing some feedback.

Are your new buttons the same finish or did they stop using it once they realised the problem?
Cheers Al
I had mine refinished here in singapore by the local porsche specialist. He removed the bottons and had them refinished before applying new white decals and then clear coating them.
They are now better than new.
clear coat?
Mine are still pretty good... maybe i should put a clear coat on them now to stop them getting any worse?
What would i buy for a "clear coat" ?
The replacement unit is post 2008 so has hard plastic buttons and not the problematic rubber coated ones on the earlier version. I was planning on getting a replacement unit from Suncoast for $500 as the swap out is relatively straightforward until the cards fell my way and the unit needed to be replaced.
There is a guy in the thread I linked who has a spare set that are refinished but wants a fair bit as they come with all the control unit as well.
Cheers Al
I painted mine with a leather dye.
Bought a black leather dye kit off ebay for about $30, from the UK - bespoke leather repair kit I think it was called.
Used a 1mm artists brush and painted the worn areas on the air con buttons.
The leather dye has a built in sealant so it wont come off on your fingers once dry, it also dries in 2 min so you can give it a few coats in the same sitting.
I also used the dye on my door trim handles, handbrake, seat bolsters etc, top stuff.
It comes with light and dark toners also so you can get the dye exact.
Good luck.
