shop quoted me close to $5000 for replacing
power steering pump
And hoses, drain and refill. That’s crazy high to me. What do u guys think?
If they're doing all 5 hoses (the .2 car has one more hose than the pre-09 .1 cars due to it having a power-steering-fluid-cooler..) it's at least a days work, and about $1500 (from memory, but mine was split between two services), so depends on their labor rate. I can see that number coming up at a dealership. My mechanic, who is actually a race car mechanic/driver who specializes in 987's took a total of about 1.5l days to replace everything (if you add the two services together.) That's ~12 hours +/- at $240/hour. Plus parts. And he undoubtedly knows the quickest way to do the job (race mechanics can't waste time..)
So it sounds a bit high to me, but that's without seeing what they are going to do for the $5000. It's not a totally silly number IMHO. It is smart to do all of the hoses at one time, that way you're only paying for one drain/flush/fill/bleed.. and eventually ALL the hoses are going to be an issue, the crimps from metal to rubber just don't seem to last a lot longer than 12-15 years. Go figure.
Yep, lots of labor. Everything needs to come off the top of the engine for the pump. Took me probably 8-10 hours for the pump and just one hose (though I'm sure a pro could do it much faster).
Great point! I didn’t know there‘s a total of 5 hoses Thanks for pointing it out. I need to ask the shop tomorrow how many are they replacing. maybe i can negotiate with them for that price but replace all 5 hoses. By the way it’s an indie shop with labor rate of $285/hr
based on their quote looks like it’s only based on 2 hoses. To replace 3 more hoses the parts alone are probably close to $1500 so i doubt they would do it all for the same price. What do u think if i pay for the additional 3 hoses parts only. So $4800+$1500. i wonder how many more hours labor for the 3 additional Hoses?
How many more hours do u think they need to replace the additional 3 hoses?
In my experience, and resulting back pain, ALL body positions favor the young mechanic. 😩
Well yeah true but if I ever had to do this job, it’s not the volume of removal, I could do that across a couple days. Its whether its a huge undertaking that is “ no country for old men”. The old man has one advantage though if he used to be a wrench, and that is knowing how to use his hands to be efficient and effective in repair approaches and having the garage to leave it for days is a life saver.
I added 1 more hose which is 3 hoses together and a pump almost $1k more to a total close to $6k. Cash deduct $400
I live in Toronto and had to replace everything that you have mentioned minus the pump and it cost me around 3k. Given the pump is around 1k and when you add labor it makes sense but its definitely on the pricier side.
I had the
power steering pump
and a pulley replaced earlier this year. About $2,500. You have a
Spyder
and the labor rates may have something to do with it though. I found a shop, Porsche enthusiast who has way more reasonable labor rates. Good luck!
Final quote was $5350 cash for 3 hoses and pump.
I just pick up my
Spyder
yesterday after replacing the pump and total 4 hoses. Weird thing i noticed the different feeling of the gears when shifting. I recently posted something about the shifting sound but now that sound is gone. It feels and sound normal now more of a squishy and quiet feeling than a loud and hard mechanical sound. The last time i drove a honda manual was 20 years ago so i don’t remember how it should feel. But i think i like it the way it is now. I wonder what the shop done that unintentionally changed this. Either way im happy now.
