So I went out checked on that connector, it was tight as could be, I disconnected it connected it back up check the secondary air pumps connector, I'll look good, I'll see what it does in the morning cuz it's supposed to be 47, which is very cold for San antonio!

Theres an old diy on here somewhere, to take apart, clean and re-lubricate the bearings
Replace bearings if its possiblebecause i wish i had tried

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Most times I can hear the coupe's turn on at stops when still not fully warmed up.
That little air pump that starts up in the morning, stays on, if I turn the car off and on then it stops.
( the one in the far left driver side corner of the engine compartment)
anyone have an idea of what might be wrong?
That is the SAI (secondary air injection) pump. Pumps air into the exhaust to light up the cats. It actually does run several times during a cold start. Maybe just let it run for a bit of time. Otherwise, if it doesn't stop running, undo the electrical connector to the pump. Make sure the engine temperature sensor is in the grommet on the passenger side intake manifold and not laying on the engine.
I was under the impression that the engine compartment temperature sensor triggered the cooling fan mounted on the rear deck lid, not the SAI pump? Is that same sensor used in the SAI pump circuit as well?
It looks to me like the intakes are reversed on the photo in gbarron’s post. The air temp sensor is located between cyl 4 and 5 on the right side of the car when viewed from the rear. In gbarrons post the AOS is to the left of the air temp sensor and the AOS is located after cylinder 3 on the left side of the car at the flywheel end of the engine. The intakes are symmetrical so I believe the air temp sensor in that photo is in the incorrect position. It should be moved to the opposite corner of the engine.

Hmm...interesting comment as I pulled that picture from the Pelican Parts DIY section, they even describe the location as per the picture. Someone got it wrong? Differences between .1 & .2 series cars?
No, I think Pelicans DIY is incorrect. I went out in the garage and took photos of an 01 and 02 C2s. The first two photos are of the 01 and the second two photos are of the 02. Both have the temp sensor on the right side between cyl 4 & 5. The common step in removing the AC compressor is to remove the temp sensor so you can put a ratchet thru the eng temp sensor mounting position to access the back bolt for the A/C compressor .

Thanks for all the pictures! I really appreciate it. So I went out checked on that connector, it was tight as could be, I disconnected it connected it back up check the secondary air pumps connector, I'll look good, I'll see what it does in the morning cuz it's supposed to be 47, which is very cold for San antonio!
If its the sai pump (drivers side rear) it doesnt matter what the temp is. It turns in for 30 sec to a minute when starting cold. Its an emissions thing and if its not shutting off then there is another issue, not that temp sensor.
The pump will shut down when you drive away (if it hasn't already) but normal for it to come back on a few times at stop lights until all of the warm up parameters are met.
UPDATE: Pump seemed to run fine today. I think the problem is that the bearings in it are starting to go. It has a higher pitched whine to it and I can "feel", ever so slightly a vibration while it runs. I'll just order one and replace it when I get some time.
Thanks for the pics and the advice everyone!
I have two '99s (cab & a coupe) and I've noticed the coupe's pump runs more frequently than the cab's but both are silent after the motor warms up. Most times I can hear the coupe's turn on at stops when still not fully warmed up.
I also have an SAI that is making the high pitched noise. Sometimes it's louder than other times. But it eventually goes away. Seems to be much louder on colder days. But that may be just coincidence. Listen to the end of the quick video, it gets louder.

Supposedly this Mercedes SAI which is cheaper than Porsche oem is a direct fit. However, FCP after countless emails back and forth has still not confirmed. After I finish a few other projects on the car I will buy this from FCP and see if it fits.

Hope it helps.
If you can find it please post! Good news is the SAI has a long life. Most are 20+ years old. So if you replace it, you can forget about it for a couple of decades.
With careful work you can replace the bearings, the right ones of these small motors are available via some of the RC car shops.. At least it worked on a Audi version of the thing..
+1 on replacing the bearings if its possiblebecause I wish I had tried that.
10 years ago My SAI pump bearings were making a chirping noise as they started ti fail. Not a big deal but a little annoying. Car was under extended warranty so I had the dealer replace it. Now the new pump doesnt chirp but is SUPER LOUD compared to the old one. Its like a terrible vacuum cleaner. The old one was nice and quiet. Darn!
