I've been absent from this forum a little too long I reckon.
In any case, I'm here to share a little "incident" that happened with my
PDK
last year.
I was happily driving along one Sunday morning when all of a sudden, there was a massive bang and the car just lost all power going to the wheels.
Found out later that all 12 bolts on the transmission side cover snapped in unison.
This is the result:
Transmission goes BooM
That is really weird. I'm guessing something very bad happened in the transmission. Sorry to hear it, but I'm interested to hear the diagnosis.
Sounds scary! I'm glad you didn't crash! Also interested in the cause.
Wow, think of the forces involved here to shear all those bolts. Must have stripped something in the case or that axle would have been spinning that side cover like a pinwheel. Or maybe it did. Oof. [Eighteen year] extended warranty I hope? A 987.2 is probably worth the out of pocket fix, depending on how much you love the car (and we know you do). I lost an automatic in a B5 A4 with 100k and replacement was well more than 2X the value of the entire car. I feel for you.
That said... a year ago? What was the outcome!? 🍿
Luckily, nothing was damaged (apparently) but not long after that, the car was stuck in 6th gear once and 4th a second time.
Both times needed the car towed to the workshop.
First round was replacing the pressure sensor followed by a reprogram of the
PDK
using
PIWIS
at my indie workshop.
Second time it happened, nothing was replaced and the car was fine after some reprogramming.
Still haven't figured out what the root cause is but it's been 4 months since it last got stuck in gear and been working fine.
that sounds like some scary stuff... did you ever find out what caused these issues?
sounds strange that some of the issues can be resolved with "programming"
It was quite scary, but confirmed by the workshop, nothing else was replaced and reprogramming the
PDK
sorted it out. I'm still a little doubtful about the reliability hence I haven't driven it cross border yet.
Seems to be working fine now though so I'll just leave it as it is.
This was a used 987? Possible someone installed the limited-slip diff and overtightened the cover bolts? I can't imagine all of them failing at once; I can imagine over-torqued bolts sequentially failing until only a few are left and those failing at the same time.
Yes, it's a used one (also a used
PDK
off a 3.4 S). I was thinking that if the bolts failed sequentially, wouldn't it start leaking beforehand? It is possible of course.
