Was wondering cost to replace a windshield. Located in the Washington DC area and was quoted 3700 dollars. 08
cayman s
. Glass 900 install 700 and the real kicker was rain sensor calibration was 1500 . Plus some other stuff, glue etc. Seems really high . This was from a
Porsche
dealer. Thoughts
I cracked a windshield and needed it replaced very quickly because I had a DE scheduled. So I chose Safelite because they had one in stock. It was only $285 for my 2011
Cayman S
without rain sensing wipers.
I probably wouldn’t recommend this route for most folks, but I wanted to give you an idea of pricing at the other end of the spectrum.
btw. I had that done in Baltimore County.
I also had a windshield replaced on my 2008
Cayman
by Safelite, it was paid for by my insurance so I'm not sure what the total cost would have been if I paid for it. I have rain adjusting wipers and they work fine post replacement. They came to my home to do the job and took maybe two hours to complete it. No problems since then, which was I think 8 years ago. The glass is from Fuyao. The in-glass antennae is slightly different from the original windshield but the difference does not appear to have changed antennae performance
$1001 OEM glass and aftermarket install. 2009

no auto wiper or calibration needed.
Update, got another quote for my windshield from a different dealership. About 1700 dollars out the door. Said their is no calibration needed. Guess the one dealership was trying to up charge.
That sounds more like it. I paid about $1,700 CAD four years ago.
Yes, I agree, getting it done for around 1800 . Talked to my independent mechanic who works on my car. There really is no rain sensor calibration expect going into the computer on my car. The
Porsche
dealer who I am taking to said the same thing.
Most jobs like windshields are almost the same car to car.
Go into youe safelite store, explain that you would like one of their most experienced techs, and an OEM glass.
More than a normal safelite quote, and less (and better) than a dealer.
I’m curious why you would not recommend Safelite? I’m leaning towards Safelite and aftermarket glass considering it’s like 15% of the dealer cost and I’d rather not go through insurance. My two concerns are I’ve heard that aftermarket car glass can sometimes be distorted and wavy and I’d worry a bit about the installation scratching paint or the interior. Did you run into either of those or any other problems?
If you are considering moving to a "collector"" insurance in the next few years, a windshield claim does affect eligibility.
My opinion is "practice" is more important hat a dealer. (Why I like Safelite)
Also, talk to the shop about expectations. if it needs some trim replaced, let them know you are happy to provide the parts (or pay for them if they get them)
Tell them to check the new glass for optical issues. They can get another easily before installation.
Ask to be scheduled with one of the more experienced installers.
They are in the "Customer Service" business and want good referrals.
I had gone onto the website for Safelite. There is an online process for scheduling the windshield replacement. I’m not sure if the cost is any different to use insurance or not. I simply paid directly. Quite honestly, I was surprised by the low cost. You might find that the cost in your area is similar. It’s easy to do. And perhaps putting in different zip codes would allow you to compare costs for different locations.
The windshield doesn’t distort what I see. Definitely no waviness.
Let us know what you find. I’m sure it will be helpful for others.
