I've run Bridgestone RE050 PP's for some time and thought they were ok, but when I needed to replace the rears and Bridgestone discontinued the 295's, I put 4 Michelin PS2's on the car.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

If you are going to do any track time or autocross time, then the tires will last even fewer miles! It's not uncommon for rear tires to be worn out in 7,000 or 8,000 miles.
You have to pay if you want to play!
Quote:
Definitely understand. Playing at the track and getting that kind of mileage out of a set of rubber is one thing. Just driving to and from work on a nice day, totally different story.
Finding a loan for a 10 year old car at a decent rate is frustrating. Too bad my heloc is being used for a bathroom remodel.
Quote:
Point me in the right direction, please. Mine only goes back 7 years. Another is 70% for loan to value for 10 years. I can fel the shifter in my hands, I just need the $$$ to finish the deal.

Try Pentagon Federal. I joined my wife's credit union for teachers. I'm not a teacher but they let family members join. Got a 2% rate for a 04 C4S. Credit unions will consider the value of the car versus the age. Initially i was going to purchase a NSX which was older and they were ok with that too. Heard a lot of good things about PenFed and their loan process. Give them a shot! Good luck!

oh good, I haven't been in here for awhile and as a fellow wide-butt, are you checking this Burke?, I'm glad to see the tire-wars are going to heat up again.
(C4S wide-butt t-shirts would be good, but my last venture into the t-shirt business was a huge bust.)
Um, yes, to answer a previous question, tires are for sure a bit pricy. And they do wear out pretty quick if you take the car out of the garage. Of course none of us got into this game with any worry about tire replacement. It's literally the nature of the beasts.
So onward to the wars. I ran with Bridgestone Potenza RE050 Pole Positions for years. Recently had to replace the rears after running around all summer. Fronts were just fine. Found out that Bridgestone discontinued the 295's. Noting abs and psm issues when mixing tires, I didn't buy Bridgestone's designated replacement tire, although I would guess the compound would be the same. Instead, I have 4 new Michelin PS2's. And, seriously, I'm finding that running the Michelins is better, both for stick and for sound and ride. Have not been out in the rain yet, but the traction is AA like the Bridgestones and no problems expected. The tread ware differece is 220 on the ps2's to 280 on the pp's. Negligible.
So, to answer the questions posed above, tires are expensive, Bridgestone RE050pp's are fine on the car, Michelin ps2's seem to be better so far.
Cheers, j

Quicksand, I too went throught a Credit Union, Andrews Federal in MD. Just got 04-C4s back in June at a 1.59% int. rate, they offered 7 yrs. but I took it for 5 instead. I joined The Club and have been to a few events and have 2 more this month. IMS issue mentioned is on the back of my head but even so I'm enjoying the car tremendously and getting the wife and kids involved even as they come along for the events - car talk this weekend, big brunch in 2 weeks, kids are coming. And when I wonder why I'm still busting my a$$ at 52, i walk out to the garage, check out the ride and although the question goes unanswered, I see my reward. No regrets!

Hello Stone, got a question for you...I can't remember if you were on the East coast but when you mentioned doing the IMS and clutch (plus) on your C4S actually a few questions come to mind. At 42k miles on my 04 I haven't done that yet but I have been looking into it with cost ranging from 2500 to near 4k. That said, do you mind sharing who did the work for you, cost, quality of work and your level of satisfaction with the shop and work done?
Thanks in advance for any information.
My first one... Picked this up for my birthday, 02 c4s with 27,233 miles.
Anyone know of a good mechanic/ reasonably priced in Atlanta? I know it needs a rear main seal and a cam cover needs resealing but I factored that into the price. Other than that I think it is in awesome condition.

Its loaded - all options except the Nav. I have not done any after market performance mods to it. I did however switch out the side markers though - way better than the orange stock ones
Mine is a 2003 and has a 6 speed manual transmission with only 15,000 miles. I do need to replace the 2 front tires but I cant decide which ones to go with.
Tell me about your 4s and upload a few pics too

hey Rich
I'm amazed at your low miles !
I ordered mine with sport seats / headrest logo, carbon brake, shifter & sills, lictronics, crest center caps, sunroof
what tires do you have on the rear ?
My Carrera has the 4s wheel caps, it has a sunroof, NO crest/logo on the seats, it does have the carbon fiber trim inside (steering wheel, ebrake, and shift ****). Yeah only 15,178 miles on it - i drive it only on nice days and never in the rain.
My front tires are continental which need to be replaced asap - 31%. My rear tires are Michelin Pilot - they are still good - about 58%.
I am having a terrible time deciding which brand of tires to buy for my car. Any suggestions?
Rich
I am leaning towards the Michilin Super Sport tires for the front. I have owned the car for a year - second owner - when i bought it it had 13,800 miles on it - a 62 year old man owned it - he bought it brand new from the Porsche dealership in 2003 - he had all the service records from the dealership - clean title and car fax - I had it checked out top to bottom - its an excellent car - what a find!
What is your opinion in regard to the Michilin Super Sport tires?
Rich
I've always used pilot sports and I read that the SS blend that performance with longer tread wear..so they sound good ... but if you have pilot sport on the rear, put them on the front too
you did find a rare car !
This is how I purchased it, stock:
This is after some work done: Excuse the bad tires, I'm putting 315's on it in a week or so.
This was my drive to work today:
Planning lnengineriing nikkies. Should i go to 4.0 or just 3.6? Does deep sump cause frequent contact with pavement? Is a plenum advisable? I am advised to have the ecu reprogramed. Will this allow over revvinng-- my wife occasionally autocrosses this c4s.

Well I FINALLY ordered my new tires - Michelin PS2s for the front and back - yep i'm replacing all four at the same time. They should arrive by next Monday - I'm so happy to have finally made a decision - can't ever go wrong with PS2's
I sold my 2002 C4S in 2005. I have since gone through many cars but can't seem to forget that C4S. I just found out a family member has decide to sell his 2003 seal gray 4S. I helped him buy the car in 2005 and he had put only 15k miles since. I believe he currently has just below 50k miles. It has nav and Bose... Don't remember much more. What is a fair private party sale price? Not that excited about mixing money and family!
just bought 996 4s 2002 with 17000 miles on and i like to buy a new wheels and tires but i have a big dlemma to stay with 18s or buy 19s? any suggestions ?

good move. I've run Bridgestone RE050 PP's for some time and thought they were ok, but when I needed to replace the rears and Bridgestone discontinued the 295's, I put 4 Michelin PS2's on the car. The traction rate is the same, the PS2'S do have a slightly lower wear rating, but the grip and ride with the PS2's is superior to the Bridgestone.
you were right to get four at the same time. big problems happen when not running matching pairs front and back. been there, done that...
Greetings all. Long time lurker, but figure I'd finally post now that I am a 996 owner. I recently picked up a 2004 C4S, so far I'm quite happy with it. I'll probably sticking to tech forums and asking lots of nerdy questions.
I also just picked up an 04 C4S with 47k miles. Its arctic silver w/ black full leather with GT3 wheels, PSE and sport shifter. Ill post pics up soon! Glad to finally be a part of the 911 family !
This week I purchased a 2004 CS4 Cabriolet (Black/Black with sport exhaust and hard top) - 49,750 miles. I've never seen it and still have never driven a 911. The transport is to meet me today for delivery (Houston to Pittsburgh). Pre-purchase inspection from an independent Porsche shop reported excellent condition - super clean. Can't wait - Today is the Day!!!
Hello Gentlemen,
RedOctober here from Dublin, Ireland, saying HELLO!
After a long time checking out the 6speedonline 996 forums, I bit the bullet, sold the Evo 8 and picked my first Porsche up.
2003, currently 97K kilometers, manual 6 speed, full options with moonroof, litronics, PSE exhaust (LOOOOOVE IT), bought it April 2012.
Completely bog standard for now till I pay off the loan.
I visited 9ff in Dortmund, Germany recently, in view of creating the car I want. Will put up a couple of shots from the trip soon.
Here's a couple of shot when I first picked it up:
oh oh, struggling to figure out to get more pics up simultaneously. I'm useless at this
