I did a lot of looking before buying and had the car inspected by an independent Porsche mechanic.

Mine had/has rust underneath, although I have already fitted Bilstein shocks which replaced the rusted OEM units.

Thanks Niko, the car wasn't that clean when i bought it but I cleaned up and replaced various parts along the way.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all,
I'm interested to know your thoughts on UK imports. I've been on the 996 hunt for quite a while now.
Those people that visit Carsales would have seen a number or 996 4S and 997's at reduced prices as a result of being UK imports.
Clearly purchasers are generally avoiding them, hence the price difference for the equivalent Aus delivered models.
They all obviously have compliance, and if they have up to date full Porsche service history and a PPI is done, what are the issues??
Interested to know what you think.
Has anybody purchased one?
Thanks
Tim
Jim/Hugh
Actually, I did search the forum and found 3 post which essentially told me not much. Perhaps I'm not searching correctly.
Anyway, that said, surely a PPI will pick up any rust issues if they're there.
Anything else that's an obvious issue?
Tim
Yep, was searching on the 996 posts. Got the lot on the second attempt!!
Yes Hugh, just been looking on the Aus Carsales for some time. Havent really been considering an import, but just thought they might be worth a look. There seems to be a couple of cars currently on the market which "look" good on the surface.
As i previously noted, I've been looking for a long time. Correct Porsche service history and a Porsche PPI is a must for me.
Thanks
Tim
I know what you mean!
997 C2S was my second choice, there's a hand full of 997 C2 on the market at any one time that are UK imports and attractively priced! I can't see why if the PPI comes back good you shouldn't buy it, it'll always have that "import" status though so you'll be; buying low & selling on low... its all relative.
Cars that have been on salted roads are a big concern though, I have imported (from US) cars much older and seen myself how bad it can be! But a good PPI should reveal all?
Like many, I would recommend to buy on condition. The only consideration is the value of it not being OZ delivered, so long as this is factored into the purchase price then happy days. I would buy a 997 UK car no problems, in fact I might just do that.
Uk imports are what's they are. Lower priced and lower valued.
The rust thing is real. Porches are lower priced in the uk to start with, and so most don't get special treatment. They are parked outside in the constant drizzle, and they are driven on roads in winter that get salted.
Even if the body itself is not rusty, a lot of the components underneath will be.
Peek under a true arizona car one day and you'll see the difference. Or even a country Victoria/nsw car.
Buy if you want, but keep your eyes open.
Disclosure: I have a uk imported car.
If the car has been given ordinary attention in the UK it will probably have a bunch of rusty parts, if you can find one that has been maintained it could be fine. Here are the pics of my UK import.
My suggestion is buy on condition.
Edit >> Oh and these pics were taken in 2012 when the car was 14 years old.
Buy on condition is the words you need to remember.
Don't buy something because its cheaper than others offerred.
My carrera 3.0 is a UK import, however it is not corroded and was the best example I could find for sale at the time I Bought it. The Oz delivered ones I had looked at were actually rustier or had shocking collision repairs made to them.
Thanks Niko, the car wasn't that clean when i bought it but I cleaned up and replaced various parts along the way. What was a pain in the bum was the corroded exhaust hardware, much of which did require cutting away and replacing. Structurally and body work wise the car was fine. Even the original dampers & springs weren't in that bad a shape before I upgraded them.
Buy on condition means a long & thorough search but the results can be worth while.
When buying a UK car the number of previous owners is declared and a low number is often a good indicator of the car being held by enthusiasts with the time, space and budget to care for the car,
Lower priced and lower valued is fine by me if it's the right car.
Again, I wouldnt buy anything without a Porsche PPI and would assume that any issues would be picked up then, whether is be Aus delivered or an import.
Thanks for all the info.
Will keep looking!
You should look for cars from other RHD markets too.
I completely agree with the "condition is King" comment. After all....they were all made in the same factory weren't they?!?
My car in Singapore is absolutely flawless and there is no salt or rust issues here.
As I've said before, the less than desirable UK that come here (Singapore/ HK) in particular) as used Parallel Imports are the biggest problem....they are usually farmed out as exports when our COEs expire.
It's all about condition, service history, number of owners.....and in the case of 997s I can say from experience......buy one that's unmolested, there are so many modified ones out there (even X51 and PSE scared me away).
Kelly - your car is about the same age as mine, and underneath looks about the same as mine. Some rusty mounting hardware, some nuts and bolts rusting, white spotting corrosion on a lot of other pieces, including the alloy ones. It's instructive that this is what you get.
None of this is necessarily a bad thing but people do need to keep their eyes open when looking at UK imports.
As has been said - an enthusiast owned UK porsche can have lower mileage, better paint and interior and even more options than an equivalent Aus del. Or it might have just been owned by an estate agent who parked it on the high street in drizzling weather for 10 years. Condition and documentation will reveal the story.
I bought a UK import MY04 996 Turbo in January this year. Price was around $20 below Oz delivered vehicles. Additionally it had a stage 2 upgrade which included Milltech exhaust, upgraded diverter valves, and ECU remap and produces plus 500HP (cost > $10K if I had done it). It all comes down to what you want to do with it. If you want a pristine collectors car you may find it difficult to find a suitable import. I wanted a car for club events so I was happy to get the performance at a great price. Having said that my car is in great condition, and had 89,000 Km's when I bought it. The rust issue is real though. Mine had/has rust underneath, although I have already fitted Bilstein shocks which replaced the rusted OEM units. The exhaust was only 12 months old so that was fine. On mine there are some parts that are rusted but are not a concern to me. I had a PPI done in Melbourne so knew the condition and bargained accordingly.
Hi, I have a 2002 996 C2 Cabrio which I purchased in the UK with 70kms about 3 years ago. I did a lot of looking before buying and had the car inspected by an independent Porsche mechanic.
I have driven this car to the Nurburgring and loads of other places whilst it was UK based - it is no garage queen and it has been very reliable. The only problem I have now is the draconian speed limits we live with in Australia.
I am not too worried about resale as it cost me substantially less than current Aussie delivered cars.
I would look at the following:
Corroded alloy parts on the engine and gearbox
Corroded heat shields
Corroded exhaust system supports.
Corroded AC condensers/radiators
Corrosion on steel suspension parts and brake lines.
The UK forums provide a good insight into the salt issues.
Hope this is of assistance.
+1 on Cam911 summed it up nicely, plus fact is there is a fair change other UK based forums will have seen / know the P.O or as in my case I found the P.O. on a US forum.
History, condition & PPI & the cost of the PPI off the asking price then go from there.
Good luck
I have been watching Carsales for many months now looking for a 997 series 2 PDK, and the price of this import keeps being reduced,
http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Porsche-911-Carrera-2009/SSE-AD-1148323/?Cr=0&sdmvc=1
it's now 20-30k less than an Australian delivered, if everything is ok on the rust and PPI, at what price do you guys think this is good value, and has anyone experienced finance or insurance issues when purchasing imports.
