Hi everyone,
I wanted to document a solution to a
TPMS
problem I’ve been chasing on my
2008 Cayman S
(
987.1
). I know many of us have dealt with
TPMS
headaches, but this specific failure mode was maddeningly inconsistent. After a deep dive into
PIWIS
and some trial and error, I found the root cause.
The Symptoms
If you have a 987.1 and are seeing this specific sequence of events, this post is for you:
Startup:
You turn the car on, and the TPMS shows the correct pressures in the correct corners. No errors.
The "Roll Call" (5-10 mins in):
After driving for about 5-10 minutes, the pressure readings go blank.
The Swap:
A few minutes later, the readings come back, but the
Front Left
and
Rear Left
pressures have swapped places on the display.
The Error:
Because the car now thinks the front tire (29 psi) is on the rear (where it expects 36 psi), it immediately throws a
"Flat Tire"
warning, even though all tires are fine.
The Timeout:
Sometimes, if you try to re-learn, the system sits on a blank screen for 20+ minutes and eventually throws a "TPMS System Fault" or "Flat Tire" for all four wheels.
What DIDN'T Work (Don't waste time here)
I initially thought this was a coding issue or a sensor ID problem. I tried:
Using PIWIS to hard-code the sensor IDs to specific corners.
Using an Autel tool to force a "Re-learn."
Changing the TPMS module coding between "Comfort" and "Standard."
These fixes would work for
one drive
or maybe a day, but the error always returned. Why? because they only updated the system's "passive" memory. As soon as the car ran its active hardware check while driving, the error came back.
The Root Cause: It’s a Hardware Failure (But not the module!)
The 987.1 system uses four individual "initiators" (antennas)—one in each wheel well—to trigger the sensors.
When you drive, the system performs an "Active Localization Check." On our cars, this check
always starts with the Front Left wheel
.
My
Front Left Wheel Well Antenna
had failed.
When the system tried to "ping" the front-left sensor, the dead antenna sent nothing.
The system got confused, went into a fallback mode, and accidentally grabbed the signal from the nearby Rear Left tire instead.
This caused the swap, which caused the pressure mismatch, which caused the false "Flat Tire" alarm.
The Fix
I replaced the Front Left TPMS Antenna (Initiator), and the problem is gone for good.
The Part You Need:
997.606.101.00 (TPMS Antenna / Trigger).
Note: Do NOT buy the part ending in 103.02—that is the main control unit!
The Location:
It is a small black box mounted on the
backside
of the plastic wheel well liner.
The Install:
Turn the steering wheel all the way to the right.
Remove the T25 Torx screws holding the front-left wheel liner.
Peel back the liner.
Unplug the old antenna, clip in the new one (997.606.101.00), and button it back up.
How to Diagnose Before You Buy
If you have PIWIS, go to the
RDK
module ->
Drive Links Checks
and run the test for "TPMS Antenna, Front Left." If it says "Failed" or "No Communication," that’s your smoking gun.
If you don't have PIWIS, you can try swapping the antenna from the front-left to the front-right. If the "swapping" error moves to the passenger side, you know the antenna is bad.
Hopefully, this saves someone else the weeks of frustration I went through!
Very impressive troubleshooting and resolution of a truly obscure failure!
Congrats to Bryan for receiving our coveted "Technical Contribution Award" - possibly with the lowest post count (this was his 4th) on record at Planet-9! And thanks to our moderator

for the suggestion.
It was a very detailed, well written post! Thank you for contributing so well (and so quickly!) to the community! This is what we love to see, so it's well deserved! I hope you'll give us more content, haha!
I’m wondering if this is the cause of my issue. New TPM sensors at all four corners. Tire pressure is spot on. Yet I keep getting indications that a tire is low, ADD +4 LBs. One day it showed right front was 4 lbs low. Went through the process for the system to ‘relearn’. All was good until the
next
startup. Then it indicated left front was 4 lbs low. Checked pressures manually and they are perfect. Is this the antenna problem mentioned in this thread? Searched by the part number and was surprised to find that this insignificant, hidden part is $250+. I’ll try to do a relearn process again but baffled as to why I keep getting erroneous readings.
This is what I am experiencing now. At start-up, the tpm shows -4lbs on a corner. After resetting the system, it goes away until the
next
start-up when it returns on a different corner. Did you find a solution yet?
Per my fix, this is what worked for me.
