Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Hi Folks...just recently completed installing a steering wheel cover kit for my 2008 Cayman DE1. My experience from this was less than pleasant to be honest. What is supposed to apparently take 2-3 hours was a 6-7 hour process filled with almost endless frustration. Mainly the thread...always kinking and knotting and twisting up that kept you from having a smooth and continuous process doing the stitching. Utterly infuriating I almost ripped it all off. Patience eventualy endured, and in the end, I did a decent job...I think. Mainly, it's installed. I still have some final tucking and fitting to do, but the stitching process is as complete as it can be for the time being. Before and after pics below. Before was the OEM Black Alcantara for the DE1...I got Black Alcantara with the 12-o'clock marker in grey leather to match grey stiching. I am exhuated. In retrospect, I should have paid to have the wheel redone off season by a pro. Their "how to" video shows someone doing the process in 30 minutes or so. Not likely.

POST 3Original post

I did one of these many years back and it wasn't easy and was a lot of work but did look better afterwards. Nice job take Saturday and Sunday off this week.

POST 4Original post

I just did mine a couple weeks ago. Took about the same amount of time. Got it from Mewant.

POST 6Original post

Next time. If there is a next time. Or for those considering this mod. Royal Steering Wheels . They are in the UK. Send them your wheel. It is easy to pack up. About 2-3 weeks later you will get back an absolutely gorgeous steering wheel. Countless thread colors and patterns. I cannot remember the cost. It was not cheap. But it was not crazy expensive. Worth the trouble (minimal) the cost and the wait.

POST 7Original post

Would love to see some pics. I'm wheel man even if I never changed mine

POST 9Original post

Looks great. I tried recovering my wheel myself recently with a black alcantara cover, as I had experience with a leather cover on another car in the past. I found the alcantara to be very unforgiving and not willing to stretch as much as leather. Stopped after a period of great frustration and gladly shipped everything to the place I got the cover from to do it for me. I wise decision on my part.

POST 10Original post

Yeah the alcantara was not stretchy and neither was the carbon fiber area.Took forever. I know it's not classic Porsche but it makes me smile when I get in the car and it feels grippier than the leather was. I also got perforated alcantara which may have helped a bit with the stretch and certainly lends to the grippiness of the wheel.

POST 11Original post

Look grippy and large. Is that carbon fiber? The red platters stand out. Are they larger than stock?

POST 12Original post

Yes, carbon fiber look on the wheel and supposedly real cf on the shifters. You can see the stock shifters in the middle, they're the silver portion. They make the paddles larger and easier to shift if your hand is in a position other than the middle of the wheel. Both mods are easy to reverse and help with drivability.

POST 13Original post

My current Boxster GTS 4.0 came cf wheel to match the interior cf. I didn’t think I would like it but it grew on me. The smooth leather at 9 & 3 is where your hands are usually. I’ll have to take a picture of it and post it. I just did. Don’t know how well it shows the cf on the steering wheel but those pj are pretty clear
