Hi Porsche people
I’ve been thinking about getting a 991.1 GT3 as a daily driver. Would love to hear your thoughts.
Does anyone on here have any experience on doing this?
Was wondering about the ride, noise on motorways, thoughts on mileage affecting values and… any should I be concerned on engine issues?
Thanks all

Engine issues on the 991.1 GT3 are all over the internet. There are 5 series of engines, E0/E1/F/G0/G6. As to general usage I will leave that to other PHrs who have owned one.
Depends what you are coming from.
Comfortable car generally (I have done 12 hrs straight before).
But I only drive in Europe, I expect the UK roads are not good enough to daily.
Cup 2 tyres, probably not the best choice.
Mileage will affect value.
You will need axel lift.
Having done over 120 k Miles in 64RS , GT3 and GT3rs , I always daily my cars as cannot be bothered to drive a comfy saloon car , life is simply too short . The modern cars are more than comfortable and the new generation Cup2's are fine for year round use in the UK . Did a long trip yesterday , bit wet but fun as always . The 64 I definitely needed to be younger LOL .
Regards
Look up Chris Harris Collecting Cars video on dailying his GT3 Touring.
I found it quite inspiring, particularly how he'd managed to grind off all the aero from the underside
If you're worried about noise, mileage and value before even buying one I wouldn't bother. These cars are for driving and enjoying, with thoughts about how lucky you are to be thrashing around in a GT3.

Do you think it's worth adding extra underbody protection to the GT3 cars if used year round?
Possibly for the salt times of the year , although I get underside cleaned every few weeks . GT3RS easiest to daily as higher at rear due to bigger wheels and with lift no issue on any bumps . 64 RS , mine was lowered further, did ground out a bit , also 64 had no stereo etc

That's the kind of cripplingly expensive advice I really need to hear, thanks.
edit: oh, the 992 vanilla GT3 also has 21s on the rear, right?

A dealers just advertised a 991.1 gt3rs with 9 months porsche warranty on AT for £125k.
Not sure what your budget is but it’s been a while since I’ve seen one that price at retail.

No lift on that one, but
this one
looks like it has both lift and folding buckets.
Is it therefore possible that a 991 GT3RS is more practical than a 992 GT3 Touring (with fixed buckets)? Apart from the wing, I guess.

The 992 is the most comfortable and a easy daily, anyone who says a 992 gt3 is hardcore needs to go and drive proper hardcore machines, unless they are coming from a roller/bentley etc, great cars on the road.

My May 991.1 GT3 had the later engine luckily fitted on the production line as opposed to OPC engine swap and then delivered October 2014.
Perfectly usable as a daily unlike the 997 GT3 not overloud even on motorways and very compliant ride quality. Some don't like the 'bag of spanners' transmission clatter on idle some cars have excessive driveline shunt too.
Lift (£2.5k option new) is essential as a daily and those cars without are worth less and tough sellers too.
Later G series engine essential many cars have had 2 3 or 4 engines due to failures. As 15 year warranty from Porsche approaches expiry date there is some question as to the future value of these cars..food for thought.
Cup tyres crap sub 7 degrees and don't like standing water so winter use on these is challenging lol.
Ceramic braked cars now worth only marginally more than steels mainly due to the huge cost of maintenance....CS cars worth between 5 and 7 percent more than comforts.
Carrara white was the launch colour and most popular new (both my 991.1 and 991.2 were white) although white
is far less popular now v say Agate Sapphire GTSilver or
even black.
The gen 2 was a far better package overall and not just because of the way superior engine with far less power and torque drop off than the gen 1 approaching the red line and consequently carries a big price ££ premium for this newer gen...and this is fully justified.
Gen 1 GT3 nevertheless a great package at the money but mindful of the risks ( legit Porsche warranty is essential) many prefer the much newer 718 GT4 at similar money as a better alternative which in the real world is as rapid and as entertaining.

And the accessory choices:
Hopefully this will be broadly in-line with the cars you are looking at in terms of UK ...
For me at the prices and use case, I'd be looking at a GT4. I loved mine a lot, but I sold it to Simon at Cameron Sports Cars a couple of months ago to buy a 991.2 gt3. I wouldn't risk the .1 myself with the engine problems, a 718 GT4 is the better buy.
Not sure if Simon still has my old gt4 actually, it had a lovely comfort spec and had done 18k miles.

Thanks. Lots of great advice there
There’s a 991.1 GT3 at RPM Tecnik that’s caught my attention.
Liking the fact it has the RPM rear seat conversion, which would be good for my family needs.
Looks like a really cheap GT3 “Touring” in my eyes.
Shame on me, I hadn’t quite grasped how serious the original engine issues are, which is why 991.1 GT3s seem quite reasonable compared to other generations I guess?
Food for thought indeed.
You can easily daily a 991 GT3, particularly on Pilot Sport tyres and if you choose comfort seats.
I’d advise against it - for me it would be a car with buckets and Cup 2 tyres, and a cheap alternative for daily use!

I looked and decided against a 991.1 GT3.
Loads on info on tail end of the the GT3 price increasing thread.
Engine blows and £100k bill waiting.

Engines are guaranteed for 10 years and warranty available for a further 5 years thereafter. It’s a non-issue.

So if I buy a 2014, the engine lets go, say next year, I get a new one free, it’s covered to 2035 and then I can get a further 5 years cover on it?
Or was it a 10 year blanket cover on all 991.1 gt3 engines from 2014 immaterial they are replaced or not and then an extra 5 years cover available bring it up to 2029?
What happens if it goes after the 15 year OPC warranty can no longer be got?
For some that’s little over 3 years off.

End of the max 15 year warranty period you’ll see the a$$ fall out the market and used prices collapse.

To clarify - a 2014 model is outside of the 10 year warranty as of the 1/1/25. If you buy a 2014 from OPC you will get an automatic 2 year warranty. However the OPC warranty will not extend past the 15 year mark from the original sale of the car - 2029 in this case.
After 2029 you are running that car (IMO) on a prayer and hope. When that engine goes it is a minimum of 50K I have been told. Also the values of the 991.1 will drop off a cliff edge due to all the issues.
There are loads of 991.2 GT3 engines available from 20K, so that would be the sensible solution, rather than take it to an OPC for a rebuild after 15 years. I’ve no idea why so many people on here want to spend >50K on this.
The G6 engine doesn’t seem to be going pop when looking at information on rennlist. Hard data isn’t readily available.
There is a 40K bump up to a 991.2, so you’d need to take a view on this.

Worth pointing out Chris the OP is more concerned with the gen 1 than the gen 2.
Also bear in mind the North American market is widely different to the UK illustrated by e.g. the popularity of Chalk (i.e. Crayon in the UK) in American v the UK also the popularity of manual GT3s in America v the UK.
Black was the most common GT3 colour for the 991.2 GT3 new in the UK in contrast to NA also white was the second least popular colour in the UK (in contrast to the gen 1 when it was the launch colour and most popular new) again in contrast to NA where it was far more popular.
In contrast to NA, out of 662 UK 991.2 GT3s including Tourings, there are c 371 manuals and 251 PDKs.

Agreed, I hope I said that somewhere ... I only had this data on the gen2.
There is talk on Rennlist of gen2 engine transplants (with the relevant ECU ?) ... and there must be people who can rebuild these engines for a Hartech type price so long as damage is not too extensive ??
However, I do remember the pain that Lichfield went through trying to replace a failed 997 engine with that from a gen2 car ... the DFI engine.
Wasn’t it only a small number of cars affected, but Porsche made the decision to replace all regardless (at least for the initial issue)? Also, I thought that if engines were going to experience problems then it tended to happen fairly early on in its life, so any car that gets to 15 years that has been driven ‘properly’ is unlikely to fail?
After its engine replacement (prior to delivery) I think I did more than 15k miles in my 991.1, using the full rev range (!) without issue. I’d certainly be keen to buy that car back!
I still think that after 15 years, if you have engine issues with a car that has been looked after by an OPC throughout its life, you will get a decent goodwill gesture from Porsche, but appreciate that is an unknown and not necessarily something you’d want to reply on.
A lot of if buts and maybes in there.
As much as I’d love one, tbh I think I’ll give the .1 a miss, possibly sell the 4s and put that towards a late .2 later next year (25)
Having a good 10 years plus of warranty available would certainly be the only way I’d consider having one, my pockets are sadly not that deep out of warranty god forbid the worst were to happen.

The original problem was conrod bolts that had not been torqued up fully resulting in bottom-end failures (and in some cases fires).
Then the hydraulic cam followers were failing a high revs ... a problem that was never completely cured, hence the move to shims and solid lifters for the gen2.

I know they are a lot more robust but do you know what the issues seem to be with the .2 or is it too early for a pattern?
Unaware of any issues with the gen 2 GT3 engine although seem to recollect a small number of cars had a minor problem with a weeping oil seal.
Some cars occasionally smoke on startup particularly after standing for a while mine did (both gen 1 and 2) if standing in excess of 1 week but oil consumption on both was minimal and required no top up between services
