Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I had a similar thing in my 1999 996, I replaced the sway bar links (just did this on my 1999 Ford Explorer too!), AND I tightened down the spare tire, which I think was the real noise maker!

something else to check......the dme and other modules is mounted to an aluminum tray behind the rear seat, I've heard these make strange decieving noises also when they aren't properly secured....
Leading evidence: 'Replace sway bar links (just did this' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'top shock mounts' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check ......the dme and other modules is mounted' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I haven't driven it yet, but suspect the top shock mounts.

The mechanic is good and he tells me what the problem is and so far I have been able to repair the car myself.

The owner had the windshield replaced, and the 'mechanic' on site tried to sell him on replacing the rear wheel bearing for $600, because it clunked as the car starts moving forward or backward.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Fixed it by wrapping a piece of hose around the coils...
Buddy of mine just dropped off a high mileage car for me to work on.
He says it rattles when going over bumps.
I haven't driven it yet, but suspect the top shock mounts.
Is this typical for these cars?
KT
most common things I see are front lower control arms (the ball joint......easier to swap whole arm).
also sway bar links go bad, and have seen the upper shock bearings......
be careful, allot of times the rattle/squeek will disappear as soon as you jack it up and unload the suspension....only to have it return later.
I drove it last night. Nothing alerts me.
He describes the noise as being as distracting as having a four year old in the back seat.
So far I'm not hearing this.
I'll need to drive the car all day, up and down the coast, to figure it out!
( His idea. I have the car on loan 'til next week when we swap for his other car for service )

I've seen the sway bar links seem ok but rattle like babies when the load changes.....
also seen the upper shock mounting creak and tick, I've gone as far as greasing the metal to metal contact points.....
something else to check......the dme and other modules is mounted to an aluminum tray behind the rear seat, I've heard these make strange decieving noises also when they aren't properly secured....
What a fun day trip.
Napa to Santa Rosa, to Jenner, to Ft Ross, to Bodega Bay, to Petaluma and back to Napa.
160 miles~
It seems the noises are all related to ill fitting interior trim, rattling windows and wind noise from worn seals. Car is solid.
I'll peek under the car, but I don't think there are any problems
Handles very well, has good acceleration and is, I'll just say, very peppy.
Fun day!

I had a rattle in the back of the Boxster I just bought and got under to discover that I could wobble the sway bar around. The D bushes were shot. Replaced them and no more rattle.
How do find the water cooled car over your air-cooled? I know they are chalk and cheese. You car being a track car.
How many miles on that 996?
If the car has aftermarket lowering springs, that might be your issue. I had a 2001 and a 2002 both with lowering springs and the darned coils would hit each other causing weird rattles. Fixed it by wrapping a piece of hose around the coils... Took forever to trace...
Good luck,
Chris

Rode in the car on the track.
Very clunky in the turns with slicks on. Not with street tires.
The rear sway drop links are not free moving and are not indexed properly.
The owner had the windshield replaced, and the 'mechanic' on site tried to sell him on replacing the rear wheel bearing for $600, because it clunked as the car starts moving forward or backward.
Also on uneven transitions, like driveways.
Wheel is solid feeling on the hub and there is no grumble or hum when moving. ( first sign of bad bearing )
Guy was a hack.

I can't help with an answer to the rattle but I too have developed a "clunking" sound now coming from under the car.
It is a 99 C2 6 sp coupe with 82K. About 1K miles back I started noticing the clunking sound whenever I would go over any rough spot in the road. It is annoying and I can't find it.
The motor mounts are less than a year old and are not the problem. I will probably take it in and have it diagnosed. The mechanic is good and he tells me what the problem is and so far I have been able to repair the car myself.
I just did the water pump when it started rattling.
BTW... we just got back from Napa after cruising up 29 to Calistoga and going on a balloon ride from Yountville to Napa, landing in a field near the college.
What a beautiful area to live in.
