With my TVR now sold I’m looking to get back in a 996.
Previously had a very early C2 but fancy a turbo next.
However prices seem to have gone up a lot in the last 2-3 years.
Does a £25k manual turbo still exist - or have I missed the boat?

X4 that for a decent low miles one
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202510217...
Although that’s the opposite of what I’m looking for. At £100k and low miles that is only for a collector who will hardly ever drive it.
Where are the 150k miles cars you can drive whenever you want and not worry about value?

double that - at least - for a decent one.
I chickened out during covid and didn't buy one when I should have.

Being driven and enjoyed by their current owners, who don’t want to give them up, would be my guess.
Mid 20s would get you a high miler tiptronic Turbo these days.

Thats what WBAC would quote on a 150k tip.
Looks like manual turbos start around £35k now.
The 996 turbo is a great bit of kit, but it has two of everything that's expensive, especially if not maintained correctly; turbos, intercoolers, actuators etc. etc.
The engines are usually strong, as long as they are maintained properly and also if the car is not in receipt of an overly-optimistic remap. 500hp is okay, but when increasing amounts boost pressure is used you can get more problems develop.
Gearboxes were a major issue. Sports & Classic are the go to for proper fixes. Even 10 years or so back, mine cost £8k for just two failed ratios.

Ah, gearboxes - had forgotten about those.
You'll be in and out of a 996 Turbo in 12 months coming from a TVR.
I'd suggest a "sorted" 996 C4S with PSE at the price point you've specified - with a borescope at point of sale to confirm the cylinders have only minor scoring or less.
I have had two C2s, a C4, C4S and a Turbo. I'd like a GT3 one day.

Interesting, why is a C4S a better car than the turbo?
A 996 C4S looks nice it has the turbo body and the unique rear full length rear reflector.
The 996 turbo is miles ahead on performance and more importantly engine reliability.
If you don't buy a turbo, buy a manual 996 C2 coupe which will be light, nibble and cheaper to run.
IMHO if Porsche never made any of the modern GT cars, journalists would have spent more time raving about the 911 turbo. Especially the 996 generation is such a great mix of “GT” and sports car.
I bought and sold a blue one for about £25k but that was in 2013. Not seen anything even remotely similar recently.
I didn't really like it very much..

That’s my plan.
For me the C4S is just for show - and they are the heaviest.

I'm thinking full suspension refresh (£5k?) and turbos/actuators refurb (£7k?).
If you do have to do the turbos refurb, then get the impeller upgrade for a slightly faster spool. The impellers themselves cost something like £50!
Not related and obviously mezger far more reliable but was watching a M96 rebuild by 9werks TV for his 3.4 Carrera. £28,500
What in the world would a rebuild for a mezger 996 turbo engine be nowadays? Parts prices must have more than doubled since I was last in UK.

Wow. It must be cheaper to just sell it as broken and start again. Can't answer the Mezger rebuild cost but I'd guess around the same depending on how bad things are. Then throw another £10k at it because "while the engine is out..." and "might as well improve things."

Yes, 108k miles, but have discounted it due to 2 tone metropole and grey interior.

You might be right - but a 60k mile car will be the same age, £45k and still might need all this?
Thanks for the tip on the turbo refurb upgrade.

Interesting to see that it went for £17k. It was advertised at £26k iirc back in the autumn.
I wonder what the engine needed?

I think he got carried away. A Hartech rebuild is about half of that - until you start doing things "because youre in there" or more likely "because i'm making content"

Maybe. More likely with a higher mileage car, surely? It'd likely have been used through winter etc. Salt water gets on the turbo and actuator which can rust everything.
I think I know this car with the two tone interior. It was up for sale for quite a while. I am also on the hunt for a 996 turbo, the price point seems to have moved to around 40k for decent examples. This is pricey but I am trying to convince the missus it would be an investment.

A good one was £35k back when I bought one 10 years back. So £40k for one that's been maintained well since then is fair enough really. Utterly fantastic cars.
There is a polar silver manual aerokit turbo on 911uk website with a 134000 miles. Looks a well maintained honest example with offers being invited. Asking £34000 or offers but as private sale must be worth closer to £25k than £34k?
The thing is these engines do let go and if its £25,000 to rebuild properly you may as well buy a mint one for £50k.

Agree, engine costs to have rebuilt by any of the specialists is in that territory, plus - as someone else said - the "while we're there" stuff that you add on inevitably. Always a cheap version of a good car that needs money spent. a 25k manual turbo isn't really a thing, as it's v likely you're not going far or for long without spending alot more to get it right - great cars when sorted - amazingly capable
If you get a 'known' car that's in good nick and has been regularly looked after by a specialist, they will have been doing most of what needs to be done to stay n top of the mileage. It's always better to be on the front foot.
With a few tweaks (con rods etc.) the same Mezger engine revs far, far higher in the GT3 form. So silly over-boost maps aside, they are fairly under-stressed in turbo guise.

If you go look on something like FVD Brombacher, you can find the different internals. The titanium con rods are about £6k IIRC. There's a turbo related reason why you will never get the same revs - even the 991 GT2 does not rev past 7,000rpm.
991 GT2 RS rev limit is 7200rpm with 700ps (690bhp) I suspect the GT2 RS is making closer to 750bhp real world.
You can get similar power level with a 7200 rev limit out of a 996/997 turbo mezger with simple bolt ons. Not cheap though.

Turbo engines never like the 8 or 9,000 rpm rev limits of the GT3's though.
When I did my PEC Silverstone morning for the Taycan, I was waiting my turn at the launch straight, next to a 991 GT2. It was truly spectacular to see and hear it explode down the straight.

Fast forward to c. the 5min mark - this sounds like fun (and like certain death in my hands)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5Gu8RhXzsk
Looks like that one revs to c. 8.5k, maybe a bit higher (as above even with 4wd)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KC6syR5JU4
I bought a mint 2004 turbo in 2014 for £34k, it had a full engine rebuild with in 6 months which cost about £12k, other than a £3k suspension refresh it cost virtually nothing in the next 10 years other than annual servicing. I sold it in 2024 for £40k. It was a great car.
So apparently this is real:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/317977659428?itmmeta=01...
It is now sold as while I spend some time trying to verify if this was a scam or not someone else paid the cash
When I rang they said that the car had sold 15mins beforehand and is no longer available. It was sold by BALLYKEEL LOGISTICS as I understand it.
Wild price 11k

I've got an 05 Turbo and it's insanely brilliant.
It does everything very well. Mine's an immaculate very low mileage car that needs nothing. The trouble with buying bottom of the market you'll be forever spending money on the car to keep it running, that's a fact , it's a very old car now and nothing on these cars is cheap. Doing work yourself will help massively but if you can't then labour costs will be huge and a cheap car very quickly isn't and it's still only worth what you paid for it.
Mine was the most expensive in the country at the time but I haven't had to spend a penny on it apart from an oil/filter change which I did. That's 3 yrs and 8k miles. I think it's still worth what I paid for it from a dealer and that'd be me selling privately.
If I was you I'd buy a really good C2/C4 and keep on top of it.
That looks a really good buy. Should be £40k , great colour.
Actually it should be £45k
Get a good PPI done ...what a car!

Interesting, why is a C4S a better car than the turbo?
I bought a 2004 manual turbo aero with 130k for 32k in 2017. The gearbox shat itself costing 7k to fix. I sold it again for 32k in late 2018 and replaced it with a manual 996 C4 which I kept for 7 years I enjoyed it so much.
I just didn't ever really enjoy the turbo. Although very marginal it felt bigger and heavier than the C4. The C4 sounded waaaaaay better and found I could wring it's neck on fun roads far easier. The only place the turbo was missed was when wanting to overtake on a short straight.
I've never driven a tip 996tt but I've always wondered if that box would suit the car better as I never felt the manual suited it's GT character (if you want a sports car get a Carrera).

This is the thing, you see it a lot on the facebook pages where people post wanted adds for a Carrera and have a good budget and then you get all the comments, "cOULd GeT A TuRbO FOr DaT" and people just dont understand that despite both being 996's, they are just such different cars. Ideally you'd have both but for most of us its not an option

I believe it’s the same auto as the E55 AMG Merc. My E55 spat out its torque converter which wasn’t cheap but my wife had a 996 tip with same box and was fine, they do want to shift to top very quickly in the 996 which can make it feel lazy.

Yep, I think the boat has sailed on that, and the cheap cars could easily need £10k spent on them (or more), which makes the more expensive cars seem a bargain!
I spoke to someone last week who bought a 996 turbo manual that had an engine rebuild which seemed odd as I thought the metzger was bullet proof and now it needs a gearbox rebuild.

Any more info on it? Cheap? Standard? Tuned? Mezger engines are generally very strong but I've heard of one or two needing rebuilds. The manual gearbox also isn't as strong as the auto box (apparently that can hold well over 500bhp as OEM).
I don’t think it was a cheap one, car had done around 100k miles but that shouldn’t be a massive issue on a porker…I guess if you had a previous owner who launched the car a lot then it could wear much faster. Don’t know much else about it.
I believe it was from a dealer so there is a conversation happening now due to it being a recent purchase.

That's concerning! Well, good luck to the owner. Let us know how he gets on.
All engines can and ultimately will fail. The Mezger in these just fail at higher milages and are more tolerant of abuse.
If an engine rebuild scares you then these probably arent the cars to buy.
They are old, complex and expensive to repair. They also need two of everything as they are twin turbo.

What kinds of mileage can they fail? You hear of 996 Turbos with over 400k miles.
The gearboxes are a known weak link, but can be rebuilt better. Second and or third gear ‘pop out’ under acceleration is the most common issue.

A million and one answers to that question I’m afraid. You regularly hear of these engines doing well over 200k if looked after.
Unfortunately all sorts can take an engine out. Even with the best maintenance.
A faulty injector on boost can quickly cause catastrophic engine damage.
Turbo internals can fail and be ingested by the engine.
Fake spark plugs causing issues.
Too many to list.
On the whole they have a good reputation for longevity. They are a robust motorsport derived engine. But they are old cars now. They did go cheap for a short while. Definitely cheap enough to be purchased by people who couldn’t maintain them to the level required.
Best advice I can give is, before handing over cash, get it inspected by a specialist. It will be cheaper to pay for an inspection than to make a bad one good.

The issue the chap had that I mentioned above was a noise / whine. He took it back to the seller and they said “they all do that”, he went to a specialist who said they can be a little noisy but this one is very much a rebuild type of noise.

Thanks, useful to know. I bought one from a specialist and it continues to be looked after by a specialist.
I missed the chance when they were bottoming out at £20k but tbh I don't mind at all - I wasn't in a position to buy one back then so it's irrelevant.

Looks like as the sun has come out my £25k might have been a little "optimistic". Very few high mile VFM cars currently advertised.
Yep, I think the boat has sailed on that, and the cheap cars could easily need £10k spent on them (or more), which makes the more expensive cars seem a bargain!
You're quite right. This difficulty is spotting the more expensive cars that might also need £10k spent on them (or more)!

Nice one listed today with a Red Line Racing full engine rebuild

Nice spec car.
The advert mainly has pictures of large invoices…is that to get the new owner ready for what is to come???

Saw that one but looks like redline racing have closed down, didn't inspire confidence.

I reckon the rise of these is now happening and we will see another +20% in the next year or so.
Buy now!
I fear you may be right!
Hopefully there will be some coming on to the market in the autumn. But I agree, £25k is no longer realistic.

So apparently this is real:

It is now sold as while I spend some time trying to verify if this was a scam or not someone else paid the cash
When I rang they said that the car had sold 15mins beforehand and is no longer available. It was sold by BALLYKEEL LOGISTICS as I understand it.
Wild price 11k
Scam - that came up last week at £18k. In Belfast - but including delivery and a full money back guarantee!
