I decided the risk was worth it after knowing the IMS had been replaced with a LN double row, and checking that there is no soot or oil smell from either side pipes.

Even though the oil was changed in the fall (before I bought), and I am only at about 2,500 miles, I am going to drop the pan, change the oil, and cut open the filter just for my own peace of mind.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
20 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

I just picked up a (it was previously owned by member: RB101) 1999 C4.
The car was originally black, ( I would have preferred the black) but was resprayed (A good job) white last year.
I know the IMS bearing was replaced because of a forum post by the previous owner which I found on here.
the car needs some interior updating, but the exterior is clean and straight... Or at least is looks that way, who knows what is under the paint.
I had a 924 back when this car was new and lusted after the new 996....... Now I have one.
car looks great, I'm sure you're going to love it!
did you have the oil pan dropped to inspect the cylinder bores and check cam deviation and receive 6 months of black stone reports
I didn't drop the pan.
I decided the risk was worth it after knowing the IMS had been replaced with a LN double row, and checking that there is no soot or oil smell from either side pipes.
The oil is clean, and it doesn't smoke at all on startup. Plus it has always been a Florida car, and the bore scoring seems to be (mostly) northern cars.
I paid a low enough price that I will happily re-sleeve and rebuild eventually anyway.
I hope to get to 200k and then go for a rebuild.
I do know that the chain adjusters were done at the same time as the IMS and clutch. (105k)
This thread is about the actual car I bought: h

Awesome, congrats! Enjoy in good health. These cars are a blast to drive. Lots of good DIY articles on Pelican and Renntech too. Good info here on RL as well.
congrats on reaching your goal. That tint is like a black hole, it must absorb all light.
I part out 996 and have some black interior panels and trim as well as the odd screws and bolts.
oh and add your car to the
Typ 996 Registry
Thank you,
I will add mine to the registry. It is early, but not super early. Nov-98
I will need some bits and pieces. Its 23 years old with high mileage, so it needs a few things that's true.
I will check with you once I get a list together.
The side tint and windshield tint aren't exactly my idea, but they look good on a white car. I will probably remove the tint though, as my old eyes need all the light they can get.
Thank you for the welcome.
I likely would have kept the stock lights, but they came with the car. I do think they look ok, though after a night ride last night their performance is lacking.
I got plates for the car yesterday and spent most of the day out putting it through some quite spirited driving. It did throw 2 codes about the middle of the day, (A code for a evap leak, and an 02 sensor out of range)
I plan to get the car up on a lift this weekend and see if I can get the 02 sensor changed. Not sure where the evap canister is yet, but I will see if a hose popped off or something.
Oil pressure seems quite strong for a 170k mile car. (though the gauge doesn't actually have a pressure reading, so I just know it is reading at about 80% of the gauge)
I was able to find some areas where I could really open it up, and the engine runs quite strong, and sounds smooth. The 19" wheels and low profile tires, combined with the aging suspension made for a rougher ride, but the car is 23 years old.
I am thinking that I need new coilovers and all new bushings. I like the look of those 19" wheels, they do seem to modernize the look of the car, but I don't think they will end up staying. We will see.
I ordered a short shifter kit (not sure I will actually use the shift lever) as the the shifter is obscenely loose and not precise AT ALL. I will replace bearings/bushings. Cant stand the shifter as is.
The car feels solid and well planted, but yeah it is a 23 year old car with 170,000 miles, so there are some things that are going to need sorted out.
Still; the 150 miles I put on it today were a lot of fun.
Evap canister is under the pass side wheel liner. Under the fuel fill door. I would replace the cap first. The only way to really find the issue is to smoke test the system if the cap doesnt fix it.
Well, I have put 1200 miles on the car now....
Loving every minute of it. This thing is a real joy to drive.
A couple of gremlins have come up, but they are minor, and I hope to get most of them sorted out over this coming weekend when I will have 6 or 7 hours of time on the lift (I rent a garage, and have access to a shared lift)
I bought an inspection camera so I can look at the bores. Not that I suspect any problems, but I am curious. I will share what I find with the forum.
I also ordered a Foxwell nt530 scanner which should be here today, so I will be able to see Cam deviations, and microswitch positions.
I have some sort of problem with the lock/unlock system, and from my research, I am thinking it is one of the microswitches in the doors that need replacing. Sometimes, it thinks it is locked when it isn't, and refuses to send the 'unlock' command via the dash button. I also haven't yet been able to use the remote, and I think this might be related.
My headlight switch seems to be in the middle of failure, so I will replace that. Seems to be a quite common failure.
The evap canister leak code seems to have gone away and not come back, but I still have an 02 sensor that isn't responding, so likely either a wire, or the sensor is shot.
I have to do something about the exhaust. Stock is too quiet by far. Gundo, Filster, or make my own x-pipe? We shall see.
I really want to figure out a way to lower the sport seats by about an inch, or two if possible. I am too tall and my head hits, there has to be a way to get a lower seating position.
I bought, but haven't installed yet, a short shifter. The stock shifter is so worn out that I have trouble finding reverse sometimes, and it is too sloppy for precise shifts.
Even though the oil was changed in the fall (before I bought), and I am only at about 2,500 miles, I am going to drop the pan, change the oil, and cut open the filter just for my own peace of mind. Again, no evidence of issues, but its a high mileage car, and even though I expect to do an elective rebuild at some point, I want to catch any issues before they become larger, if there are any to worry about. I know that some of these engines have gone 300k+, so maybe mine will be one of them We shall see.
Didn't get around to getting on the lift yet, but did install the short shifter. (much much better)
Also pulled off the stock mufflers to do the gundo hack, but found that it had already been done. If that is what it sounds like with it done, can't imagine how quiet the exhaust would be stock. sheesh.
I am going to make my own x-pipe and just do resonators or something like that. Sounds too tame as-is.
I just made up a quick muffler delete for now.
Didn't have enough time to really do much over the weekend, but I did get some driving in with the new shifter, and the muffler delete.
I am going to try and get up to the cars and coffee meet in Daytona next weekend. I think I am going to go ahead and join the PCA.
The one that connects the output pipe to the top unused chamber on the muffler. (where the sport exhaust port is)
I did not have the kind that has a pipe connecting directly from the input to the output.
I didn't know it had been modified, the exhaust sounded very tame until like 4k RPM
New headlight switch, installed.
I used the Mercedes Benz headlight switch. no difference that I could detect from the OEM one.
$29 from FCP Euro. I figure if it only lasts half as long as the OEM I am still ahead.
