Quick question for the pros - I was told by a Bert Smith (FL) Porsche sales rep that quote: "the 2004 911 IMS bearing issue was re engineered (on the 04's) and that the IMS issue was corrected by using a new larger bearing unit (Porsche made....)."

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Hey All: Quick question for the pros - I was told by a Bert Smith (FL) Porsche sales rep that quote: "the 2004 911 IMS bearing issue was re engineered (on the 04's) and that the IMS issue was corrected by using a new larger bearing unit (Porsche made....)." Huh?? Whiskey. Tango. Foxtrot.... Is this true or just complete salesman BS? I have NEVER read or heard of anything about this.... Thoughts?? Thanks in advance - Lindsey Hunt

POST 2Original post

More like on the 2005 and it seems to be a running change so some later build '05 have larger bearing. Larger bearing cannot be changed without total engine teardown. They have also had failures. The only way this 2004 would have the larger bearing is if it has a Porsche remanufactured replacement engine. Porsche finally definitively addressed the IMSB in 2009 by designing the IMS out of the engine. There are more robust bearings that can be mounted in 2004 and earlier engines. read post #4 in this thread. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-996-997-forum/677477-ims-warning-light-good-idea-not.html

POST 3Original post

Perhaps you (or they) should tell the customers we have seen with the 06 (and later) car that lost engines when the "perfected" IMS bearing crapped out.................I’m sure they would be very reassured (or consoled) by the comment…..

POST 4Original post

The 06 and later IMSB is supposed to be a much better bearing with far fewer failures. You still see one from time to time.
