No all models of the
PCM
can be configured to work with the
Bose
. - Suneet
hello
i am paul and i want to put in my
cayman
2007
pcm
and navi but i dont have
bose
and cd changer i have to by diferent model or is the same??
the
pcm
unit and dvd driver can work to all the
cayman
modells of are dipending of the year of the car? thanks in advance!
sorry for my not so good english!
As long as you have a PCM2.1 and a 987/997 (2005 +
Boxster
or 997, 2006 +
Cayman
), it should work with a
Bose system
. Only certain
PCM
's are built without amplifiers in them that don't work with sound package plus cars, but the
Bose
works solely with an external amplifier so this is not an issue.
- Suneet
to suneet.
If i will by a used
pcm
and dvd drive what i have to see first ??
please help me!
paul
my car is without
bose
and cd changer and i want to by used
pcm
and dvd drive. all
pcm
are the same for my car?
paul thank you!
???????????
Sorry Paul, I read wrong, I thought you did have
Bose
. If you don't have
Bose
, you
CANNOT
use part numbers that have 143 in the third set of numbers, for example 997.642.143.02 or 997.642.143.03.
Anything with 141 in the third set of numbers will definitley work.
Sorry for the confusion... - Suneet
this include and the
pcm
unit and the dvd unit?
are difrend type?
thank you paul!!
when i get the serial numbers from the
pcm
and navigation drive were i can see if can fit to my car?
paul
Paul,
That is only the
PCM
, any navigation drive will work and the part numbers are listed earlier in this thread. I don't understand what you mean about serial numbers...
- Suneet
suneet,
I meen that if i want to by a used
PCM
and Navigation drive the only think that i have to see is not to have part number in the 3rd place 143?
Any other part numbers fit to my car?
Thanks!!
Paul
I wouldn't say any. It needs to be a model 997 or 987 part in order to work. Older PCMS from 996 Porsches will not work.
ok thank you.if its 997 model it will fit to my
cayman
2007?any part number of 997
pcm
?
DVD drive part numbers: 997.642.157.00 or 997.642.137.02
PCM
part numbers: 997.642.141...
- Suneet
Thank you very much !!suneet
I will find to by a
PCM
and navi to install
Today i found all the cables in my car to conect tha navy.
My car have already the cable for cd changer but i dont have the unit so i will ask the most without
bose
and cd changer??
paul
hello Suneet,
One more think,When i will cut the wires to conect power to the navi driver i have to put off the
battery
from the power??
paul
You can get power by splicing into the CD-Changer power connector that is prewired in the front boot.
See K-ManS's PCM\Navi install article here:
My Articles - PCM Navigation Installation - Powered by ReviewPost
Thank you suneet,
But i undertand,In the manual of
PORSCHE
for instalation say that you have to disconect the batery of the car when your going to cut the cables.is it true this?
thank you for replying!
paul
Yes definitley true, you have to disconnect the
battery
! This is important to do when doing any electrical modifications. Just loosen the nut on the terminal on the left and slide the cable off.
Thank you very much suneet!!!
Hello again Suneet!
I find a
PCM
unit but this person that is selling this says that his car was with
bose
and my car is not,he will send the part numbers today. It will be fixed to my car only if i by onother fiber wire or i have to find anothe
PCM
unit if it has in the 3rt part of number 143??
paul
If the third part of the unit is 143 that means it has no internal amplifiers/drivers and it will not be able to produce any sound in a car without
Bose
.
Bose
cars have been shipped with
PCM
's with drivers/amplifiers with 141 in the third part of the part number, so there is a good chance that his
PCM
will work but don't buy it without making sure of the part numbers.
- Suneet
if i will send you the part numbers can you understand if it will work to my car??
paul thank you replying
yea just send me a pm.
Thank you Suneet!
Onother question! Can i add
sport chrono
in my car?
paul
I'm quite surprised at the cost of this.
$3895 for the
PCM
module and Nav drive from
Suncoast
when it's only $3110 from the factory?
What am I missing?
Hi Suneet
Sorry to trouble you ... but I'm finding my local
Porsche
dealer in Australia terribly un-informative!
This is my first post on this site.
I have 2006
Boxster
987 VIN WPOZZZ98Z6U701280 Build Date is 10/2005. It has the standard CDR-24 with an upgraded sound system "Package Plus". I'm told that means that it just has extra speakers ... but no
BOSE amp
is installed. Also, I have a 6 stack changer CDC in the front.
I'm wondering what your thoughts are in relation to compatibility with a
PCM
unit I'm hoping to buy from the internet. Below are the details of whats being offered.
PCM2.1 SAT NAV MAIN UNIT OPTICAL MODEL: 997.642.103.11
DVD NAV UNIT 997.642.137.02
HARMAN BECKER PHONE UNIT 997.646.208.13
Can you advise if this is compatible? Also what additional parts are required? As I'm based in Australia (this
PCM
unit is coming from UK), I imagine that I would need to purchase a local DVD Map ...
Thanks in advance.

As you can see from what I put in bold above, that model does not have built in drivers and will only work with Bose,
it will not work with sound package plus cars.
Hey thanks for this Suneet... you just saved me a lot hassle and money!
This whole issue of retrofitting PCMs is just a lot harder than necessary!
Ok .. so further to my email above ... it seems that you can buy an amplifier to drive the
PCM
997.642.103.11 ?? Anyone know if this is true? If so, what sort of amp do you buy and how hard is it to install?
Not true. To retrofit
Bose
you will need a whole new wiring harness for the car, because your set up (sound package plus) uses an analog speaker-level input amplifier to power 3 speakers, and the headunit to power 6 speakers. The
Bose amp
(digital fiber optic input) powers all the speakers from the amp. Thus the wiring throughout the car is different. Wiring harnesses run about $8,000 from
Porsche
.
But can you use a non-
bose amp
?
No because the
Bose
headunits only output using the MOST fiber optic bus and no other amps other than the
Bose
amps accept that signal.
suneet, do you have any info about whether the new
PCM
can be retrofitted?!

Hi ! It seems that you are a very good guy with a good knowledge of
PCM
. The thing is,that I did a retrofit in my car which has only sound package plus, but I bought a
PCM
for
Bose
cars with P/N:997 642 143 02. You wrote that certain
PCM
`s do not have an integrated amplifier because
Bose
doesn`t need that. How can I make sure, that my
PCM
has no amplifier integrated and will never work in my car ? Can I install an amplifier i.e. from my CDR-24 into the
PCM
or could I use an external
Bose amplifier
with my loudspeakers ? I don`t want to buy one more
PCM
unit...
Greetings from Austria !!!
I'm really not sure b\c they changed amplifiers; the new cars have 385 watts instead of 325 and discrete 5.1 surround sound. But the interface is still the same, so there is a chance they may work with the older amps. Someone will just have to try it out.
If the part number is 997.642.143.02, it doesn't have the integrated amplifier and will not work with cars without Bose. This information is direct from a Porsche TSB and there are several on this forum who bought Bose PCM's and tried programming them to work with sound package plus cars with no luck.
I bet that the new 997 system will work in the older cars, which is probably a good reason for
Porsche
to change the design to make it difficult to retrofit without painting the other elements(climate control and PSM, sport, chrono,
PASM
option panel). Somebody will be willing to try it out at some stage I'm sure.
G.
Hi again ! And is it possible to install the amplifier into the
PCM
?
Best regards !
No it's not possible.
Hi and thanks again ! My
Boxster
is 04/2006 with Sound Packeg Plus - according the parts list and the VIN I would need a
PCM
unit with P/N : 997.642.141.02 . now that costs more than 3000 Euro - where can I get a remanufactured
PCM
unit ? At
Porsche
they told me that I only can get a remanufactured part if it is a warranty case or if I give a unit back with the same P/N - but I only have a 997.642.143.02-unit !
Could you maybe help me ?
Best regards !
mugenseiki,
sad to say but im in the same situation as you. i did the entire CDR24 removal and retrofitted the PCM 997.642.143.01 into my 2008 GT3. similar to the boxster, the GT3 did not have BOSE as an option. so the only option i had with the sound package plus. i visited my local dealer twice to get them to program the digital output form my PCM to become analog, but they came to the realization that it was not possible.
then my next option was to purchase the BOSE amp, then i found out that the i would also require the harness to fit form the BOSE amp to the speakers which cost like $5500 USD. so im not gonna do that.
our best be would be to sell our current PCM 997.642.143.XX and then just purchase the PCM 997.642.141.XX which has the internal analog amplifers/drivers as suneet stated the previous thread.
so.. who wants to buy my PCM 997.642.143.01 ? it came out of a 2 week old 2008 Cayman S.
thanks....
stephan,
sorry.. my post count is too low to reply to your PM. but im asking $2700 OBO for a for the
PCM
2.1 (part # 997.642.143.10) and navigation dvd module.
thanks..
ohh.. also i can include the navigation dvd, 5/2007.
posting one more time.. so i can have a total of 5 post so i can reply back to PM's
If you plan to get another
PCM
anyway, why are you selling the nav module?
great question
turns out.. not only did i purchase the wrong PCM, but the navigation module i have turns out to be for a horizontal mount. porsche has 2 styles of navigation modules as well. (both thePCM and module came out of a 2 week old Cayman S)
the navigation module i currently have is part # 997.642.157.01. according to PET, its designated for a horizontal mount bracket. i believe there is something internal which dampens the DVD drive to perform better in the horizontal position.
the navigation module i should have (vertically mounted on the 7gt3) is part # 997.642.159.01. PET designates this navigation module to be mounted vertically.
eventhough i got no sound with my current setup, i was able to get the NAV to work. i noticed when the module was mounted vertically, i got erratic movments and sometimes no movents from my ICON on the nav screen.. especially when i hit bumps while driving. but, when i mounted it it horizontally (used double sided tape on the carpet), the erratic behavior disappeared.
Hi Suneet,
I found a
PCM
part number of:
997-642-13-05
Will this work on my 08 CS with
Bose
?
Seem like this part number is not listed on here at all. Either 141 or 143 for that third set.
I don't think that's a valid part number; but any
PCM
will work with a
Bose
car so I wouldn't worry.
Just found out that it's a 997-642-133-05 instead of what I put down prevously.
It's suppose to be coming out of a 911 Turbo.
Does that sound right?
Saw it on ebay by the way.
would a 987 MY06
Boxster
(no CD changer, no
BOSE
)
PCM
/NAV work on a 997
GT3
(no CD changer, no
BOSE
, with sound package plus)?
Just did the
PCM
/ Nav upgrade. Fairly easy thanks to the excellent instructions on this site.
Anyway, I ended up with an extra bracket for the nav unit. Free (just pay for shipping / packing) to whoever needs it. It's brand new, not even unwrapped. Part nr 997 642 231 00
Custom Bluetooth / GPS / CD Changer / Ipod Interface Project
I began a thread a number of months ago to discuss a rather extensive Cayman electronics project that I undertook. The project involved the integration of a Parrot Bluetooth phone and GPS, Kenwood 10 Disk CD changer and Kenwood multi-media gateway with a custom mounting solution. I have now had an opportunity to finally document the project with photos. The project is described in the attached PDF file.
Custom Bluetooth, Navigation and Multi-media Installation
This a very unique and time consuming integration, but the effort was well worth it. For a parts cost of under $1500, I upgraded to include support for Bluetooth mobile phone, GPS, 10 disk CD changer, an IPOD interface, a memory stick interface and general audio input jack.
The in cabin control and port connections are illustrated in the photo below.
timbucthree,
That's an exceptional write up. You should submit it to our electronics articles section.
Thanks
Suneet, thanks. I will when I get a chance to figure out how to do it.
Hi all,
I have a
PCM
unit part # 997 642 143 02.
Please can you confirm which Navigation DVD drive I need for this part?
I have been offered 997 642 157 01, will this work ok, or are the two units incompatible, as one is model B and one model C?
Should I continue my search for 997 642 137 02?
Many thanks
Matt.
997 642 157 00/01 are both valid part numbers for a horizontal mount navigation dvd drive and will work fine with the Cayman. Both units may need to be upgraded to the latest software by the dealer in case it hasn't already been done.
- Suneet
Just to give a bit more background on this, my car is a Boxster, currently without PCM and I wish to retrofit PCM and Navigation.
I have a 997 642 143 02 on it's way (car has Bose), and have been offered Nav drive 997 642 157 01 (actually out of a 2008 cayenne).
Will 997 642 143 02 play with 997 642 157 01 if I update the PCM to the latest (3.3?) software?
To be safe, should I look for a 997 642 137 02 unit?
Many thanks
Hello,
I had to do this research for another member today who contacted me via pm and had purchased a navigation drive and
PCM
on ebay, but did not have the accompanying parts needed to install. So I am including the parts list and retail prices here for anybody else that runs into this situation.
Of course you will need a
PCM
2.1 unit, and a navigation drive (997.642.157.00 is the part number listed for the
Cayman
and it retails for $1824.47)
You need one of the following waveguides (MOST optical cable harness) depending on your situation:
997.622.710.00 (Bose, no changer): $99.87
997.622.713.00 (Bose, changer): $116.55
997.622.707.00 (no changer, no Bose): $99.87
997.622.715.00 (changer, no Bose): $99.87
You need the following parts, some could be replaced generically (nuts, screws, tie wraps).
997.642.105.00 - GPS Antenna - $71.48
999.507.441.02 - Speed Nut (price unlisted)
999.073.210.00 - Tapping Screw - $0.21
997.642.231.00 - Nav. unit retaining frame $19.05
997.642.257.03 - Navigation Disk - $547.34
997.612.331.00 - Wire harness (electrical/antenna) - $33.74
999.513.051.40 - tie wraps - $0.54
electrical tape\adhesive compound.
For detailed installation instructions with pictures, please
see K-Man S's installation article here
.
Good luck,
Suneet
2006 - 2008
Caymans
also came with the DVD drive with part number 997.642.137.02 . I will be retrofitting my
Cayman
with this part shortly and will verify that it works
can you use any navigation disk with the
pcm
unit or does it have to be the one from
porsche
?
Good question... the disks are made by navteq, just like most other (at least German) manufacturers. But I'm not sure if you pop in say, a
bmw
navteq dvd, that it would work in the
Cayman
. Keep in mind these navigation disks are really only about $100-200 on ebay.
- Suneet
IS this the navigation module for
PCM
eBay Motors: PORSCHE 911 997 BOXSTER CAYENNE CAYMAN NAVIGATION GPS (item 320216471317 end time Feb-19-08 00:02:48 PST)
I wouldn't purchase it without getting the factory part number. The number should look like a 997.xxx.xxx.xx format. Keep in mind that you will need an additional $500 worth of parts to make the nav work in your car.
I have a
PCM
2.1 unit without navigation, do you also need a 'navigation module' that fits into the cavity in the bottom back of the
PCM
unit?
Thanks
No but you need the DVD unit that fits in the trunk together with the
GPS
aerial etc.
The module you are refering to, was the way it was done in the old
PCM
that was fitted to the
986
and 996.
Just another point to mention. The
PCM
's are configured at the factory either with or without
Bose
. If you have a
Bose amp
already in the car you will need a corresponding
BOSE
configured
PCM
. likewise if you do not have
bose
then you wont be able to hear anything out of a
Bose
configured
PCM
without the amp. The
bose
units typically have the number 3 as the 6th digit on the part number.
While that is true for it to work out of the box; the dealer can program any
PCM
unit to work with the
Bose
. When I first installed my
PCM
out of a 997 with sound package plus, I had no sound but the
PCM
was functioning correctly. The dealer used
PIWIS
to tell the car\headunit to use the
Bose amplifier
instead of the speaker outputs.
- Suneet
Can someone organize a group-buy on
PCM
packages?
Just a note for the forums body of knowledge ...
The optical wavguide 997.622.713.00 for
Bose
with a CD changer has 4 connections. One connection routes to the
PCM
, another to the
Bose Amp
, one to the Nav drive, and one to the CD Changer (or Dension). If you wanted to install a Dension unit on a car without a CD Changer but with
Bose
and wanted to use factory fiber, you could probably pick up the 997.622.710.00 waveguide. It should have 3 connections instead of 4.
If you are going to attempt this one get ready for scraped knuckles and an urge to scream! I just installed Nav to my self installed
PCM
and damn it was hell. What I ended up doing to get the wave guide disconnected from behind the
brake booster
is cutting the ties with a tiny front bladed scalpel to get at the connection. Wish I thought of it earlier. It all works a treat now though, takes a while to calibrate, it thought I was in Alabama when I first turned it on.
Made the mistake of closing the front trunk with the
battery
disconnected.
Cried.
Called Triple A.
Fiddliest job ever!
G.
When I originally installed the Dension, I had to get that waveguide clip off from behind the brake booster. I wound up breaking the clip, which made this round much easier. I'm pretty sure I had a few scrapes when I did that. Then again, if I had a scalpel in my toolbox it may have been more fun
Hi Guys,
I recently bought the DVD navigator for my
PCM
. The problem that I am having right now is that I order the wrong fiber optic (997.622.707.00 no changer, no
Bose
) instead of (997.622.710.00
Bose
, no changer), so my question is do I need to reorder the fiber optic or I can use the one I have now. Thanks in advance.
Mendible I'm not positive but probably yes; but you should try hooking it up to the MOST connector in the front boot
brake booster
and see if everything works properly. If not, then return it; as I believe the proper one for the
Bose amp
hooks up to the amplifier.
I just did this install using the above parts list. It really made things simple to know that I had all of the right parts. The only thing that I did not have were the clips to secure the Nav Drive cage to the frame of the car. Were they supposed to come with the frame? It was nothing a little bit of double sided Velcro and a few zip ties couldn't fix, but I thought that it was odd.
You need 4 of 997.642.342.01. The part list I used (w/o waveguide) was:
