I need some photos of the mounting of the ASK amplifier, which on the
987.1
is located in the FRUNK, behind the panel that hides the air-compressor, bottle'o'goo and your locking lug key.
On the
987.2
Porsche
made a bigger amp and moved it under the passenger's seat. That's where mine lives, and it seems quite happy there.
I'm going to try moving the location of a secondary amplifier I installed to power speakers located in the storage bin behind the seats on top of the engine cover. Right now - I have it located in the compartment where the CD changer would be located if the car had a CD changer (obviously doesn't.)
I finally engineered a solution to the
alternator
electrical noise issues, (a very faint amount remained after all sorts of tries to eliminate it - long thread on that somewhere).
The thought came to me -
Porsche
/
BMW
/Mercedes went to MOST fiber-optic links for the audio system components on most of their cars - undoubtedly to solve ground loop conditions (which can cause hum) and ignition and
alternator
electrical noises. So - I looked on
Amazon
to see if a fiber based RCA-RCA transmitter-receiver setup was available. There was one system - but it was expensive, and it wasn't clear where the fibers for it could be purchased. BUT - while
Amazon
was showing me this solution - it also popped up with a transmitter/receiver setup for RCA to RCA using Bluetooth connectivity. Small money. I bought it - installed it - and the noise was totally gone, works great.
So - happy ending right? Not quite.
The Blaupunkt amp I'd installed started making noise on its own, mostly amplifying the inputs and any noise that might accompany the input signal. It does this sort of randomly, mostly in the first 5 minutes after power-on, then it behaves itself again. I suspect it's a capacitor somewhere in the amp starting to go south.
The cause might have been the location. There isn't a lot of air-circulation in the location the amp is in, and even just sitting in the sun with the car off - it can get quite warm. And hot - when the temps climb and it's being used. It might also have something to do with the 2 Ohm impedance of the speakers it's feeding.
SO - I bought another amp. MBQuartz has a line of amps, "Crunch" - which aren't huge, and one that claims a billion-Watts *(real RMS, 0.1% harmonic - probably about 50W/channel at 2 Ohms.. more than adequate since the speakers fill in, they aren't primary sound sources.)
I decided as long as I'm installing a new amp - I wonder if it could be fitted in the location that the
987.1
used?
That's where you come in. If someone with the
ASK system
, pre-2009 987 with
ASK system
(multispeaker, doesn't say
Bose
anywhere) could take a few pictures, and maybe a few measurements (HxWxD) of their amp, that would be greatly useful to me.
Closeups of the amp mounting would be particularly of interest. There are two threaded studs sticking out of the firewall in front of the fuel tank. They have a very coarse self-tap sort of thread on them. I suspect nylon plastic nuts are used with them to hold the amp in position.
Long story - sorry. TIA!
===================================
* = Car audio Watts, are not a real thing. They're based on the car getting struck by lightning, and a discharge through the amp as it blows up, taking the speakers out with it. They're called "Instantaneous Power". Real WATTs (RMS) are a fraction of the claimed amount. In the case of this amp, they do list in tiny print RMS "continuous" Watts, at 0.1% distortion, as 100W, I assume split between both channels. Since it has a 15A fuse on the input, the power can't be much more unless you've disproven Einstein's conservation of energy law. 15A x 12.6V = 189W, figuring about 80% efficiency = a max of 150W when the fuse blows.
OK then. Nevermind. I came up with a solution that works. There isn't room between the two studs in the space that I hoped I could fit the amplifier into. SO - back to the earlier location more or less.. with some changes.
I'll be posting this. And closing this thread.
