Hi all,
Seeking a bit of help on an issue that has been bothering me.
A few months ago my clock on my dash display started changing randomly when driving - I have a
987.2
.
Even though the car had been on my MXS charger - the battery was progressively getting weak, I also noticed the date was stuck at set date and would not update for each new day.
Installing a new battery solved the clock changing at random times but the date reset itself to 2007.
Fast forward a few months and after a recent service at my local Indy- they had the car for an extended period of time. About 30 seconds to a minute after I start the car, the clock randomly changes. When I reset the clock, to the correct time and continue driving it stays at the correct time. I’ve also noticed that when I use the
iPod
interface with my
iPhone
, the connection has become unstable and ‘disconnects’ and goes to the tuner.
I thought perhaps my service centre drained the battery, and this is causing the issues, but I have checked my battery and all is good.
Any ideas - I wonder if the
PCM
is in the way out?
How did you check the battery? Simple voltage testing is inadequate. It needs to be load tested. And even that can be misleading.
Is the "service centre" very experienced with Porsche 987's odd ignition switch which is in "Acc mode" whenever the key is inserted? How long was this "extended period of time"? It is possible that the new battery was damaged if the battery was completely discharged either through incompetence (key left inserted) or neglect (not left on a trickle charger over an externded lay-up).
While there could be an internal problem with PCM, the battery is far more likely to be the issue.
BTW, an intermittent problem with the radio/PCM could be caused by a loose ground. Do programmed radio stations also get reset? What work was performened at the indy that led to the long period of time?
Great questions. I had the shop I bought the battery from test it while the engine was running - they said it was okay-
alternator
charging correctly. I also did a test today through my battery tester - simple voltage which again said it was okay. I will do a load and crank test.
Yes, they are an experienced Indy - though not infallible. They had the car for several days, as they kept it while they repaired some damage they caused to my bumper while it was being serviced (it had to be removed to repaired and repainted).
Something else springs to mind- not sure if related- they might have had a
battery tender
connected to my battery, as unfortunately my bonnet dropped on it causing some damage to the underside of the bonnet. Not sure if it damaged the battery in anyway.
It definitely wasn’t a good week for them… side note, they fixed all the damage without question.
Except for the date issue, the
PCM
had been fine, until now. The program stations are not affected. It’s strange that it only jumps once the car has idling for a short time. The
iPod
connection drops in and out then eventually stays connected. I’ll recheck cables.
