Thanks for sharing this,

. Yes, this has been hotly anticipated for a while, Eric - I think there's a lot of differing opinions out this. If this wasn't so ridiculously expensive, I think it would be a no-brainer for everyone.
Porsche is just brilliant at understanding their market; many of us are all about keeping things OEM and absolutely picture-perfect and "correct" - many obsessively so (myself sometimes included). As a collector car enthusiast, I get it and am personally of two minds. As I'm generally a "bone stock" kind of guy with any mods as reversible, here's where I've been over the years per head units:
• 1968 VW: It came with a Sapphire XIV (I think?) radio, which also included FM instead of just AM. OEM and period accurate, and that was just fine with me. Only someone like me would notice that '68 would have been AM only with an earlier Sapphire model. Kept the car bone stock.
• 1992 BMW E30: Replaced the E30 radio with one from an E36. Period accurate, better sounding, and worked with the better 6-CD changer at the time (Pioneer cartridges). Again, I liked keeping things period accurate (and still do).
* 2013 981 Boxster Custom: Definitely wanted to keep things OEM stock here, so I installed a third-party (Joyeauto) unit inside my PCM 3.. Wireless Bluetooth, CarPlay, and reverse camera. Works great and didn't bust my budget.
* 2010 987.2 Boxster: Not a concours show car and a fun daily driver. In this case, I'm nearly equally as happy with a $175 new-in-box Sony head unit that I replaced the CDR-30. CarPlay, reverse camera, and Bluetooth audio (not wireless CarPlay though). At that price, and given that Waze burns through your iPhone battery anyway, it's wired anyhow.
If I had a gazillion dollars, I'd probably just pay the Porsche (like Apple) tax and pop one in as it's like a missing piece of a puzzle. Meanwhile, it's horribly overpriced for what it does as compared to other stuff out there and it's going to eventually become outdated tech -- just like the CB radio and 8-track player that used to live in my father's '72 Corvette Stingray.
I'll make one other comment that a friend pointed out to me recently: Porsche indeed is very cool for releasing brand new items to keep their 20+ year old cars current at this point. Show me another car company that does this; I don't know any.
Again, there are no wrong answers here, but it's neat to see. Meanwhile, if you are on a budget (like I am), there are plenty of other and far more affordable tech options available that aren't compromises. As always, just my two cents!
I have the PCCM+ unit installed in my car. I believe I am the first or one of the first in Southern California to have the unit. I
personally
believe that it is worth every penny for the OEM fit and finish and professional UI/UX. A lot of the aftermarket options look cheap/plasticky and the UI looks like android running on a tablet. If you are interested in
value for money - this may not be worth it
. If you want the car to look
as stock and factory as possible, the price may be worth it
. The point is, your
mileage may vary
.
@foodbiker
said it best - there are no wrong answers and there are more affordable options just from a functional standpoint.
For the MSRP of $1450, I am disappointed that it doesn't have wireless CarPlay, but I am led to believe that wireless CarPlay still isn't standard in a lot of modern cars (please correct me if I'm wrong). It would be a great quality of life addition if it did.
I had held off on buying an aftermarket radio for my old base 987.1 and my current 987.1 and I'm glad that Porsche finally released the unit. I don't have any great pictures of the installation but if you'd like to see how it looks then feel free to hop into the "What did you do to your 987 today" thread and find the picture I've posted. I've been meaning to take some better pictures of the unit and will get around to it someday.
If anybody has any questions about sourcing one (since Suncoast still does not have a stock of these) feel free to ask here. I am not a seller/dealer of PCCM+ or affiliated with Porsche in any way, I just had a very friendly experience with Porsche of San Diego who sold me one of these units within hours of them getting PCCM+ in stock. If you are a PCA member, use your 10% discount, and I highly recommend you to either DIY the install or send the car to an independent. The technician who sold me the PCCM+ quoted me $2000 in labour to install the unit, while I spent $550 at my local Porsche-exclusive independent whom I trust to have it installed.
Now all we need is for
Porsche
to release PCCM+ for the
987.2
Damn. Wish I’d seen this earlier. I could have gotten a pile of money as an original Cs owner from 2006.
I don't quite understand... huh?
I just had one installed in my 2006
Boxster base
model. Looks great. I have a question regarding the favorites. I've got
SiriusXM
installed. When I save a favorite, the icon says
SiriusXM
. After a while the true icon of the station will appear. Then it might go away or stay, seems to have a mind of its own. I can't believe that a radio this expensive doesn't have memory to permanently save the icons like our factory radios. Is this the standard behavior? Thanks
