Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Has anyone successfully taken apart a 996 starter to fix (the somewhat common) screech on start up noise? Any advice here?

POST 2Original post

You do not need to take the starter apart, but you do need to remove it from the car. The Bendix drive on the nose of the starter is either dirty or corroded, or both; and is sticking partially engaged with the flywheel, causing the noise. The Bendix assembly needs to be cleaned and they lubricated with DuPont spray dry Teflon lubricant, which will not attract dirt but will keep the assembly moving freely. You can find the lubricant at most home centers like Lowes.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I know it's the starter, I've got it off the car and it makes the noise when hooked to 12v.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I took the starter apart, cleaned it up, and it works fine, no noise. The grease at the tail end of the armature was dried out, and the bendix seemed to be a little draggy. I had to make some clips to hold the (4) brushes in place to get it back together, but it was all straightforward and simple.
