The bolts need to be torqued properly and ideally replaced every time they are loosened.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, I got into my 2002 Boxster after driving a short distance and all of sudden the gears were loose and flopping around. Does this sound like the shifter cables broke? I was able to move the gears in every direction but not able to drive the car. I had it towed to the shop for a diagnostic on Monday. I'm not a DYI guy and wanted to ask what this might cost. For months I've had a rear clunking sound on the left side. Could this be related? Thanks in advance your advice.

POST 2Original post

Could be the drive shaft. They can come loose and give similar results. The bolts need to be torqued properly and ideally replaced every time they are loosened.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Don. I hope that is not major expense.

When you write “loose and flopping around”, I presume that you are describing the shifter. If that’s correct, your suspicion that this is shifter cable related is a good one. I had a similar experience around 20 years ago - IIRC, there is an updated bracket which goes on the exterior of the trans which is part of the solution. The clunking noise in the rear - does it happen when going over bumps? If so, likely as not, it’s the bushing at the chassis end of the suspension piece that bolts to the body at the firewall (I think it’s called a track rod, but pls don’t quote me on that specific point). It’s pretty common that they wear out. Regards,

POST 5Original post

You're way up the mountain. To which shop did you go? There are far more specialists in the Coachella Valley compared to Banning/Beaumont. A town down eitheer the 74 or 239 can't be inexpensive. I'm just curious. How long have you had the car? Again, just curious. If you need a shop reccommendation... I found one in Palm Desert. I found their labor rate fair, and they fixed my P0455 code. Good luck.

I have a guy in Palm Springs that I go to. He's great and works on German cars. I had to have the car towed on Saturday afternoon to my mechanic up here. Not really a choice that day. He's fair and hopefully can resolve the issue. Yes it was the shifter that all of sudden began to flop around. The rear clunking noise over bumps has been going on for a long time. - Would this be a control arm/stabilizer bar ?

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Car is all repaired now. Apparently it was rodents. They built a nest and chewed some wires. Ahh mountain living. Thanks for all the replies. I appreciate it. PS - the rear clunking noise still needs to be solved.
