Just had the new AST5100 coilovers fitted by AutoWerks on the Central Coast.

The original trimmer was also not careful with my car when installing the roof and 2 days after I picked it up the roof got stuck down and stayed down until it was repaired by my indy Porsche shop.

Suggestion
Long story short it then cost double the cost of the original install to have a Porsche trained specialist repair all the cross threaded screws, stripped wires and busted mechanisms.

Following the constant chatter on 996’s and the back n forth on soul character or, lack thereof, in comparison with the earlier 911’s .. they being. raw visceral cool
so I’m aware there’s a few quietly drilling holes , adding cages, dukkin their rears and generally accessorising their rides.
As I’ have the pleasure of driving a mildly modded 996.2
Interested in knowing who amongst us have or, are contemplating mods and what they would do , in process of or, have done.
My thighs (non-chicken) don’t fit well under the tiller, planning to install a 993RS wheel (in stock) and perhaps a spacer or concentric mount to raise and better present it a bee’s. Airbag defeat kit on its way, incl clockspring and all that schicht, Controversial and sacreligious. But spacious. Worked a treat in the 928.
Driving Seat Time first 30 min's - Don't subscribe need to try before you buy. Desktop review is good enough for me. First drive great handling, braking, not too shabby above certain rpm, unimpressed below certain rpm, engine note , what engine note? Plus good to be able to hand the keys back to yourself after your first drive.
Drive seat time 30 to 60 min's, - same as above but heading of to my mechanics
Driving seat time, 1 hr to 2hr stage 1 - OTS tune (COBB unit with loaded OTS - great bang for buck) and exhaust ( 100 cell HJS cats) - What a difference (huge smile on the dial) . What does stage 1 do? = Makes both your own rear end and the cars rear end get a bit twitchy when you are on it and light and day boost hit shove in the seat vs stock.. In terms of bang for modded buck - 996 tt stage 1 = stage 3 b5 s4 (you know these cars) think hybrid turbo's, 24 psi of boost and lots of b5 rs4 fruit where it counts. Plus stock clutch setup on the 996 with 25% less pedal effort than the single mass flywheel setup on the B5 RS4. BUT also compare the pair. 2.5 hrs workshop time plus three boxes of parts on the 996 vs over circa 50 boxes of parts and over a year in a workshop on the stage 3 B5 S4.
Ownership time, 1 month to one year. Think circa 30 boxes of parts delivered (think stage 3 b5s4 parts, just strictly Porsche genuine stamped parts with a few exceptions. Think bits with 964rs's, 996 gt3, 997 turbo, 997 gt2, 997 gt3, 997 part numbers ) plus lots off yellow 996gt3 bits for extra stopping and a bit more yellow (Ohlins R&T coilovers) . Goal is to have 996 spooling from the high 1000's instead of 3500+ rpm without bending a rod . Everything bagged, tagged with reference part drawings / install instructions and all boxed.
After one year , Too much talk on here that stock is best and mods affect resale scared me. Just kidding. Why one would buy a boosted 996 and not run a tune and exhaust has got me beat. Night and day driveability difference. Night and day exhaust note difference above 5000rpm. Night and day driving experience. Also swapped a gembella shortshifter to a 997 stock shifter mechanism
Year 1 to Year 4 - Hardly drove it and time poor.
Year 4 - why not whack some yellow brakes on and whilst at it get the suspension sorted. All installed and ready to get geometry sorted a few days before Christmas and my mechanic gets an email saying urgent recall on 996 turbo Ohlins R&T coilovers. Do not drive your car. Took me 9 months to source them four years ago, get motivated to organise the parts to be installed, wheel alignment all booked in an then the recall note. So back into that part don't work quite right, need to wait for another one to come from overseas (4 weeks into waiting for ohlins to supply the UK supplier who then needs to ship to me newly redesigned struts and mounts . So another 2 months waiting for those parts with the car laid up. Don't miss that side of modding at all.
As I get a few more grey hairs, reckon limit the mods on a 996 to exhaust, tune (think throttle response not extra power), any variant of a 997 shifter mechanism , 997 engine and tranny mounts, and replace a lot of stock suspension bits with oem / genuine bits( particularly bits with rubber) michi tyres and your done.
PS. I thought a 996 turbo with tune and exhaust represents optimum bang for buck, But reckon I have found my next project which may exceed the bang for buck a modded 996 turbo offers. eg project limited to a start to finish duration of 4 weeks (3 weeks waitng for a box from the US) to take a stock 4 door with 6 cylinders and with a mod budget of 5k. ( 2k of that is set aside for a tune) you need to get a curve that shows max chp that has a 6 out front and the total time in the workshop is a mere 2 days and may squeeze it all in with a total budget included mods for 5 figures.
Mine's modified, though it's the only car I had I was happy to keep stock for a while to start with (think it stayed this way about 2 years).
it's got
-
GT2 Recaro leather bucket seats
-
OEM Tequiment roll bar
-
Europipe exhaust
-
Modified K16 Zero Clearance turbos with 997 GT2 compressor wheels and 997/2 GT2 RS intercoolers
- 4.0 RS clutch kit with 964 RS flywheel
- 997 short shift kit (totally forgot about this, great mod. The stock 996 shifter isn't good and the factory short shift kit is
way
too closely
stacked together)
-
Upgraded 6 pot GT2 brake kit and associated Brembo type III 350mm rotors at all 4 with
pagids
Makes about 100 more at the wheels over stock on the dyno. Its not the quickest PCar I've had, either on the track or down the 1/4, though it is is good enough for 127mph traps and pulling on the latest GT3 range in a straight line. Its got a great balance of performance for what its worth and easier for me to reconcile tracking as opposed to something worth north of $300k
Ohlins is next on the list
I guess it was like this in the 80's when people started modding early 911's? The thing for me is to keep any original parts as the next buyer will probably value those over some of the mods.
duh. Should have added I got lucky and bought a singularly well modded base manual 996.2 last year.

So far I am only planning/doing the following:
1. Centre console delete, without the centre carpet replacement.
2. Alteration to the radio harness to take only the climate controls and a double-DIN media unit.
Other than that the focus has been on repair, restore and readjust. The readjust part is figuring out how to make a centre console delete panel that matches the interior given there is no "graphite grey" centre console carpet parts left in the world.
Note me and @Q1w2e34r shop with the same tuner. I didnt mention all the suspension bits, but yes red bit is tarrett and the lower control arm is adjustable 996gt3 and theres a rear adjustable 996gt3 rear sway bar out of shot
Just wait a few months on the olhins if going the R and T kit or ask is that kit with the redesigned front strut setup.
But q1w2e3r4 has the much better lung capacity. The magic is the combination of bullet point #4 and kevin @ uwm' s tune. Or did Fraz bite the bullet.
Is the factory short shift a gembella? That was the only part that was not stock on my car when I got it. Way too short so went for 997 stock factory shifter.
Definitely interested in photos when you get this done! How do you have remove for the climate controls and a double DIN media unit in the top section?
Compared to above I’m on the mods ‘lite’ and relatively cheap end of the spectrum with my 99 C2, but still they’ve been transformative:
- Cargraphic exhaust
- ‘Orange cap’ mod with silicone hose/resonator delete
- Gemballa design lowering springs with standard Bilstein B6’s
- Auxiliary jack add to the boggo Becker stereo
Ok so these ones aren’t ‘transformative’ in terms of driving difference, more on the preventative - shit I’ve read too many things in the internet - side of things:
- LN magnetic drain plug
- LN spin on oil filter adaptor
- LN low temp thermostat
- FVD Brombacher Motorsport oil pan
This UK thread shows (with photos) some extensive 996 modding and its planned sale

Yes Richard’s car is quite the delight. Intended as the Mule for testing prototyping products, for Ltd production. Exactly the kind of car I’m sure we would all enjoy only if Porsche had made a ‘996R ‘
The car is currently at live auction, with six days to run at £32,500
Shame in Australia despite the cars and coffee skiting cred as you leaned on the carbon autoclaved roof , I couldn’t imagine anyone because of entry cost and originality worries building a type of car to this extent in OZ
Where’s all the wide boy 996 oz mod crew
I reckon "Tall Poppy Syndrome" plays a part too.
Also, I don't think the "poo poo" mentality is restricted to OZ, just look at all the hate the RWB porkers get.
😄
Personally dismissing the above weirdness. (
@Raven
😉
), . But hey,; not seen in flesh or web, many extensively well conceived wildly modded base 996’s. aside from track cars.
if I include generationally 986’s, then can only look to
@MFX
for an equivalent guffaw
the
CLR
is very OEM in execution and arguably has mods that most of us would enjoy , appreciate and lust for, it also appearing to be OEM user friendly.
interested in what people in Oz are doing with their 996’s
Here's the link to the auction of Richards CLR:

A truly inspirational build.
A mind boggling amount of time, talent and passion has gone into this car. For me it represents the ultimate expression of what an NA, non-GT3 996 can be. Hope the lucky new owner cherishes it, drives the doors off of it and tells us all about it.
Best wishes Richard
@
CLR and a sincere thank you for the joy you've bought me reading/watching your 996 and Alfa 105 exploits.
still to showy for me

Here is something that I can say is tastefully done

Caveat Emptor!
Personally all of the headlight covers, tinted or otherwise just look terrible, but I actually don't mind the 935 slant nose thing. As
@LeeM
said, as a track car it actually looks OK, but you would need to go all in with a big 935 style wing as well.
I've been looking at replacement carbon roof panels for the last few weeks for the 996. Not for C&C cred, but to remove the sunroof which will cost more than a new roof panel to have working properly. Found a few options and apparently they say removed 20+kgs from the top of the car. To fix the sunroof properly now is more than $2,000 just for the mechanicals.
I wonder how much insurance liability is affected by modification? Some changes could be major factors, both for the insurance of the car and third party and property damage in an accident.
So far in 4 weeks of ownership of a very stock 98 966.1 cab
Gundo - still not sure if it will stay, wasnt the sound I was chasing but a cheap starting mod being changed to a fister hack
double din head unit with reverse camera/phone prep
relocated climate control swapped out CD storage for storage bin
18" turbo twists
short shifter (was done by PO)
relocated spoiler button from kick panel/ fuse cover to centre console OEM switch
next on the list is suspension refresh, engine mounts, clutch/flywheel RMS oil separator and probably IMS but not rushing on this
So every modification (both noted and approved) could void the insurance of your car and open you to personal liability claims by others in an incident? Sobering thought.
You just need to tell them the modifications otherwise they won't pay out on them. Pretty sure the purpose isn't to void insurance policies as that would be bad for Shannons reputation in catering for enthusiasts.
If you are really worried about it just tell them when you make modifications and your problem is solved.
Other insurers like GIO will cover all modifications without even telling them unless it is specific excluded items like a cage or turbo.
Never made a claim myself but have had friends make claims on highly modified cars with Shannons and they were perfect in paying out.
Interesting. As long as the safety and performance (engine, brakes, suspension) are in harmony with its purpose I guess. Also it would seem a good idea to discuss the mods with your chosen insurer before making them. Higher premiums could be an outcome too.
https://www.canstar.com.au/car-insurance/car-insurance-modified-vehicles/
Modifications shouldn't change much in terms of premiums as long as you don't want to increase the agreed value of the car from what it would be standard.
Modifications don't really add much value to a car, so personally I just keep the value around the same and self-insure the modifications.
Doing 20+ track days a year I figure that at some point it will be my day, so a slight loss if I ever write a car off on the road is a sort of cheap compared to that
🤣
.
@Merv
During my claim, 2 or so years ago, 2 of my Ronal P9 rims were damaged, and as they're so rare, they couldn't find a new or even a restored price of replacement rims of the same make and model around around the globe (try and find a set even now!). The dickhead assesor just said $1000 take it or leave it, as they won't cough up for a full set of replica Fuchs as I said I'd take instead. Bloody frustrating, as said dickhead also told me my cars 'market value' was only $36k and they nearly wrote it off with $25k or so worth of damage, when at the time it was insured at $60k
To answer your question. If any mods are noted I'd say you're fine. Just check the fine print I s'pose
So, this is quite timely/ interesting
@LeeM
. I just went through the process of insuring my recently aquired '03 996. I got quotes from 5 or 6 different companies. One company - that I will not name (NRMA), told me that the market value for an '03 996 is a maximum of $38,000.
Nearly all others were happy to have an agreed value of $60500.
Another un-named company (Enthusiast Insurance) demanded that I disclose the purchase price & stated that for at least the first 12 mths the insured value could not exceed the purchase price lest I "arrange" an incident resulting in the loss of the vehicle & thus potentially make a profit from a claim.
Then after 12 mths I would need to prove via receipts that I had "improved' the vehicle in order to increase the agreed value. I argued that the initial asking price was approx 60k but that I had negotiated with the seller a lower purchase price to account for a number of thousands of dollars of required mechanical work & that the total would appromiate the agreed value of 60k. No good. Irrespective of actual market value it was purchase price only.
I argued with Ol' Mate that by that logic if I was lucky enough to buy a ferrari for $10 thousand off a person who did not realise (or didn't care) it's true value was $200 thousand dollars I would only be allowed to insure it for 10k clearly underinsuring the car. He said, "that's right, it is insured for it's purchase value for the first 12mths irrespective of market value".
I said, "If I buy a painting from an OP Shop for $10 & it turns out to be a Monet worth $40 million, what do I ensure it for?" He declined to answer. Wankers.
As per Shannons also when they feel like it,
"that's right, it is insured for it's purchase value for the first 12mths irrespective of market value". Having built an ICV from scratch in the past and knowing all the hoops and regulations of that process and the critical nature of a report from an 'approved'
engineer, I wonder if major mods such as removal/replacement of the roof, doubling the HP of the car and then road use, makes a difference. I get the point on track cars. You break it - you fix it.
So you overpaid for your '03 996 by quite a bit then
@Jason E
? Well that was a bit silly
😅
😁
Crazy stuff.
Shannons eventually came to the party after I just told them what was in my policy, though I think that was the transition period when Suncorp took over. Maybe the rep was just trying to get brownie points, as he did become a real dick, though the highly experienced repairer who did my car said they've started to become difficult, and would prefer not to deal with their insurance claims
Further to
@Jason E
if you inherited or were gifted a car or even won a Shannon’s give away . What then ..
all the mods on my 996.2 , that I was able to remember, at time of insuring were duly noted
So how many modded 996’s, even 986 going to the Luftwasser ball ?
This seems to be the logic with more and more insurers that the purchase price is max value covered by the insurer. My 997 S man coupe I purchased 18 months ago for $ 90k with 50000 km is not replaceable for that coin atm. Porsche insurance would only go to 90k max.
Not sure why this has turned into an insurance thread. You need to tell the insurer about modifications if you want them to payout on them in the event of a claim.
interestingly on reading the quote I got from Porsche Insurance I saw that they are underwritten by MB insurance. MB insurance also provided me with a quote on the same specifications just $400 perannum cheaper. I asked Porsche about any extra benefit insuring with them over MB - I insured with MB.........
Because she was:

she was the wife of said driver

and that your honour is how the fly ended up in her mouth?
For relevance, chit chat on insurance if it’s related to modified 996’s should be ok .. for those who wish too fireside chat about cayenne, corollas and Cabernet .. there’s
are you modified
I have the OEM short sifter i believe. I just dont like the way it feels stiff...ill see how she feels after the flywheel and clutch change but it just feels stiff and notchy... not what i was expecting.. I like real smooth straight shifts.. this feels like it has a crooked gated shift :S.

This has been done in the last few months, I also had a saga of new roof, which the original installer destroyed and it cost a fortune to get right.
@NCC021
Hey mate, welcome to the forum.
Can't see your photos, so maybe try uploading to a host site (postimage or the like) then copy n paste from there to here
nice cab, i have its stock twin in Sydney, loving it.
what happened to the roof? interested in where you sourced it, price and cost to have it installed.............
If I don't name the installer I can probably tell the story. I'm in the process of trying to achieve compensation.
Essentially I arranged install of a new roof through a long standing trimmer located in South East QLD. They quoted the works and said they could do it "we had a Ferrari here yesterday". When I collected the car the same trimmer (owner) was explaining that the youtube videos are wrong..YOUTUBE??
Long story short it then cost double the cost of the original install to have a Porsche trained specialist repair all the cross threaded screws, stripped wires and busted mechanisms. Be very careful who works on your 911! The install of a new roof has a very direct and repeatable install process. Not a job for a first timer. The original trimmer was also not careful with my car when installing the roof and 2 days after I picked it up the roof got stuck down and stayed down until it was repaired by my indy Porsche shop. Interestingly the guy that sorted my roof, also rebuilt the 3.4 engine for the previous owner of my car, installed my coilovers and exhaust and generally is an expert of the highest order. 5 Stars!
Good to hear you now have it sorted. Now it's time to enjoy the car..!
And, given your positive experience with the independent Porsche workshop who sorted it, you should mention them by name. It may help others needing someone trusted.
Well the shop is well known, DHM Auto Solutions. My 996 was being worked on next to it's long lost cousin a silver Carrera GT owned by the previous owner of my car. Stunning! I use DHM for the 996 and Porsche Centre Gold Coast for the Cayenne GTS.

Anyone know the make of this shifter kit? Little surprise when we pulled up the boot cover. I’ve checked through all the papers etc and no invoice of work done

So close
@edgy
. It's the TEquipment version, all other version had the plastic base including 996 GT3's and cups ironically.

Ah, I should have realised you'd be there and sent a DM! I went down with PCNSW trip although got there a bit early with a couple other guys after a missed turn
😅
... We just parked there instead of where we were supposed to on the oval. There were some interesting cars there!
Definitely! Fried eggs Sydney
ill put an expression of interest up. A few mates do a very early start run to Wollombi at least once a month for coffee. Would possibly be a good run so we could get dreamer and a couple of Nthn boys along as well. We did it on Sunday via Wisemans, awesome quick run, clear roads
😉
.
Chatting with Ronnie looks like there is a Newcastle day on late June. Maybe we organize a run to that event via the back roads, I’ll do some clever planning on the weekend
What was the massive difference here?
Was it replacing it with new engine mounts full stop, or were the turbo ones substantially different?
I ask, as mine are due for replacement, and may as well have an informed opinion.
They were knackered and stretched. Old one on the right.
Massive difference in the shift selection, went from very notchy to smooth as silk. I did the full suspension refresh a few weeks later that improved it even more.I see a few people on pelican etc go neoprene solid mounts however being a daily I didn’t want to make it too stiff.
really easy 90min job if you have access to a floor jack and torque wrench
I ended up fitting something like this to replace the licence plate light -->

@Cookster
- How do you like the paddles? I did mine as well before switching to the Momo wheel and really, really liked them.
BTW, there is also a set of carbon AMG paddles that work as well…bought a set to replace the aluminium ones but never got around to it.
One is a retangle and the carbon is shaped like an egg, yeah that will work as long as you use one or da other . The Amg joby has a better attachment point with the brass thread .
If anyone believes that the cost of a 996 is only the initial purchase price then they will be sorely surprised!
One of the items replaced was the gas pedal hinge - my initial impression is good. No longer does my accelerator move left to right as it did before!

Have also replaced the shocks with Bilstein B6s. Will be able to provide more details should we ever get out of lockdown in Sydney. The shocks, plus a general bushes replacement have really firmed up the ride. Am looking forward to being able to head out some time... (hopefully soon?!)
Yeah, no kidding. My car came with close to
$45k in receipts
. This includes tires and some less than necessary items like fitting an aftermarket exhaust, adjusting suspension, etc. but still, that's a lot of dollars.
Now that I do the math, that's not that bad when spread over 20 years.
After waiting what seems an eternity my new AST-5100 ciolovers have arrived!! Booked in to have them fitted next week with Autowerks up my way, as well as have the wondow regulators replaced..
Supercharger has also arrived. Trying to decide to I fit now or wait till I get the ensgine rebuilt...The kit is very well built, CSR radiator, Vortech charger and the A2W intercooler uses a CSR core too.

I bought a Cobb Accessport V3 and installed the pre-loaded 'Stage2 93' tune. Noticeably more power in the low-mid range, and third gear is awesome. I do find myself shifting earlier as power flattens out after ~6,000 RPM where as before it pulled hard all the way to redline (albeit not as rapidly). All-in-all I'm happy for the time being.
Time being - ha ha- About $1500 is your next outlay for about another 20% of extra boost and sorting out that 6000 rpm issue along with maybe too much clutch slip shortly there after if your regularly seeing 6000 rpm requiring an additional outlay Then its a massive slippery slope me thinks. eg buku bucks particularly if your not wrenching yourself. I'd rather put the slippery slope money towards another underrated 6 cylinder twin turbo which doesn't have any COVID tax if your patient and agnostic to higher k's. You only need to spend 5k to improve the throttle response with an intended consequence getting you to 600hp from stock . Has just as good a engine note as a unstrangled factory mezger( if not better as six cylinders go). Plus 4 doors for some diversification and a 8 speed zf box with big flappy paddles to boot. A nice compliment to the manual 6 speed boosted mezger all for under 6 figures excluding on roads. A lazy 1100 hp between the two for not much more than a over priced covid impacted sparkly looking aircooled SC. Upside is no need to fork out extra hard earned to get that naturally non aspirated adrenaline hit for no additional outlay compared to say a SC. Plus you can throw a set of keys to your mate and both go around a spin around the extended block and swap keys to compare the pair as opposed to them being relegated to the passenger seat and getting high on petrol fumes as opposed to boost.
Just had the new AST5100 coilovers fitted by AutoWerks on the Central Coast. Firstly, Simon, Cameron and Dave and the team there are amazing!!! If you need work done and are looking for someone, I personally can highly recommend the Simon and his guys!!!
The AST's are very good. Definitely stiffer (running them at 4 of 12 so may soften them another click or 2 after they settle in etc) than the Bilstein B6/H&R combination but thats what I was looking for the setup has changed the way the car feels to more of what I am used too.
