Right. I knew that the information was dated. My point was to question his statement of 'faster throws', when it is really a shorter moment. And the shorter moment, increases force to the operator (nominally), but doesn't impact the speed of travel on the other end of the moment. Moving the lever not as far makes it faster, not harder.
In plain English, the travel on the back end doesn't change at all. Only the travel on the front end does. So, abuse now or before is the cause of syncro damage' and not a short shifter ...
Bingo!
I know this subject has been beaten to death, but I need to make sureI understand this. From the opinions posted, the short shifter doesn't seem to introduce any appreciable stiffness to the shifting action. It just makes it feel quicker and more precise. Are there any disadvantages, like a higher likelihood of missing a down or an up shift? Does feel just as easy during leisurely driving? I am worried that it might turn out to be a bit of a handful during normal driving.<o

I need to decide in time to add it to my order while I still can. I ordered my
Cayman
with the standard shifter.<o

zal,
I love the shifter in every day shifting, never missed a shift and it shines on the track too. I really don't think you'll be disappointed in it. If you can find a car at your dealer with one already, either
911
or
Boxster
of
Cayman
then test drive that car and judge for yourself. I haven't found any negatives for this shifter.

<div style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">Thanks for the quick response.I guess that the opinion is unanimous.I will change the order to include the short shifter.Cost here in UAE is about $500 but I guess it will be worth it.The only demo car they have here has a tip transmission, so I can’t test drive one with the SS.They are obsessed with automatic transmission out here! You guys are the experts, so I’ll go with your opinion.BTW, this site is great since it lets us share so much knowledge and experience.Thanks..</div>
Your other option would be to order the part from Brandywine and have your local dealer install it, that way you get the regular shifter first, try it out then switch to sport shifter and see if you like it better. Of course if you don't your dealer would likely charge to make the swap back, and then you'd have to sell the sport shifter to someone else here or on Ebay. Ordering from the factory may be less hassle, but ordering from one of our sponsors would give you more flexibility, really up to you which way you want to go, but I don't think you'll be disappointed in the sport shifter. In fact I can't wait until we have a rally and people drive each other's cars and non-sport shifter drivers get to try out the sport shifter cars. I'm willing to be a good portion will then order this upgrade.
Ken,
A few questions:
1. Did you ever figure out how to remove the shift knob? Does it pull off? Or is there a retaining screw beneath the boot?
2. Does the height/angle of the short shifter lever differ from the stock one? Aside from the feel of shifting, is the placement identical?
3. Is it possible that the dealer just replaces the 'shifter' component and not the base also? That would make it much faster to install ...
4. Schnell makes a short shifter also for the 997. It is supposed to be 37% less travel and have the correct placement, when compared to other short shift options, at least compared to the 997. Do you know anyone who has used a Schnell shifter?
Thanks,

The article on installing the EVO short shifter includes directions on removing the shift knob.
http://www.planet-9.com/article_read.asp?id=65
My shift knob actually just pulled off for the short shifter install, the tech at the dealership had a helper tool to put enough pressure on it to remove, although as AttilaS stated there is an alternative method via the Evo article.
Shifter height is shorter, or the rod is shorter, whatever, the rest appears to be the same.
Replacing the whole cage unit is faster than replacing the components inside of the cage.
No idea about the Schnell.
Picked my car up yesterday with this fitted and it's awsome!! I could only but repeat everything KmanS states inhis 1st post. Much more precision, more solidand just feels perfect. Thanks for posting and getting me off me *** to get this done. Superb mod get it.
Cheers

How about shifter noise? The 996 OEM short shifter clanked noticably going into some gears. It was so annoying I had it swapped out for a stock shifter.
How is this one with respect to the sound it makes going into gear?
I didn't notice any sound difference from the stock shifter, if there is one it must be minor or at least my ears aren't detecting anything of significance.
. . . same here, no difference in 'sound' at all, just a lot more precision - perfect and should be standard IMHO.
Dean
Had my factory short shifter installed today. No negatives, all pluses. No noises noticed either. This should help at the track this weekend, along with my newly installed ultimate pedals.
This shifter isn't dramatically different, just a bit more positive and tighter. No one should fear having this mod installed, although I feel the stock shifter is extremely smooth...
After my track weekend it's confirmed: Get this mod done! Great feel at the track, no hunting for gears, but still shifts positively and smoothly 2 days after the track sessions. It's all good.
With all the RAVE about the short shift kit, i m getting it install tomorrow at the dealer. They quoted 1.5 hours for the job and the kit at $413.00. A bit more than Brandy, but they have it in stock. Will report back after it's done. Hope i will noticed the dif, as only have 600 miles on my
Cayman S
.
Tomorrow or the day after I will try to install the factory short shift with one of my guys. Will report afterwards. This weekend I am going away with wife and three kids, sans
Cayman
. So it could be after Monday.
K-Man S your articles have been and inspiration, and the how-to photos provide courage.
I just changed to the
Porsche
short shifter. It was more work than I expected. I will post some pictures with suggestion to make it easier and less frustrating with the clips.
The result excellent, the short throw make it feel way more accurate. Right now it feels a little notchy. I figure it is that way because it is new. In no way stiff, just like something fitting into a space very tight. I need to drive some more.
I recommend the change, I do not know if I recommend doing it yourself. I did it, just allow more time that you might looking at the pictures. It took me about 3 to 4 hours, and I had someone helping me for the fist two.
You are not the first to make that comment, 'Right now it feels a little notchy'. Please let us know as you get use to it.
Thanks Russ
I got the Tequipment Short Shifter and I can honestly say that yes, it does smooth out after a couple weeks use.
Mine wasn't all that notchy to begin with but like others it has already smoothed out and I've got no complaints, again I think this should be standard from the factory...
Had the short shifter kit installed today. I love it! Just wanted to echo previous sentiment that this is a very worthwhile addition - had I known when I ordered my
Cayman
I would have opted for the short shifter instead of the 6-disc changer for the same money. Installation cost was about $190 from the dealership. I also inquired about a carbon shifting knob (which I had on a previous
Boxster
and liked); they quoted me about $600! Wow. I think I'll stick with the stock knob.
I assume the carbon knob will include a new leather boot?
Yes, I think the boot was one reason for the expense since I had to specify an interior color. Too bad I can't just switch out the knob. I'd pay $300 but not $600.
I finally did get my OEM short shifter installed. ABSOLUTELY - DO this ! If i had known I wwould have ordered it this way.
Good to hear, thanks!
Russ
Photo and Article links corrected in this thread. Enjoy!
I have to agree, the short shifter is the best addition to the CS, at first it was really stiff, but after 2000 miles, is very smooth now.
It's BS that
Porsche
charges so much extra for the short shifter! It prob. costs them little or no more than the std. one to produce/procure, and a high-end sports car should come w/ a great shifter.
After all, Honda provides a world-class shifter in a $33-34K
S2000
!
Install Question -Short Shift - Remove Green Piece?
With respect to the green piece on the OEM short shifter in the picture above, do you remove it when installing?
Seems like it is in the way.
Anyone know??
Green piece is for positioning and is then removed.
Can someone confirm for me: -
1. Is there a need to adjust the linkage cables once the OEM SS is installed?
2. Any directions included in the OEM kit?
Thanks
Popolou
1. No adjustment needed.
2. No instructions included. The articles on Cayman Club is what I used.
Thanks. After reading those fantastic write-ups as posted in the thread header, its all seemingly obvious now.
Cheers
Popolou
does the 997 shifter work on our 987?
Did it, my pictures were not as good as Ken's, works great!
$405 from Tisher Posche in MD, free shipping. Curry's Auto installed in 2 hours.
worth it,
Mp
I just drove a CS this past weekend with the OEM Sport Shifter (thanks Yellowbird II), and was VERY favorably impressed. Dang, there goes a few more hundred bucks!
The
Porsche
sport shifter was at the top of my Xmas list, and the missus got a great deal on one from
Suncoast
. Installation was no problem, just study the console removal article by K-Man S, and the EVO short shift article by VideoDoctor.
Be SURE to read Swancoat's comments at the end of the console removal article!
I LOVE the way the car shifts, now! It's a little stiff when the engine is cold, but so what. In a few minutes the car warms up and it is a great shifter. Short and precise. I strongly recommend this mod for all enthusiasts!
Just took mine out and put the regular shifter back in. It feels great!
The cold weather makes the short shift a bit of a pain in the morning, but I might put it back in once Summer comes again.
The regular shift is really sweet, and I'd kind of been missing it.
Just thought I'd offer a different viewpoint from the ongoing short shifter cheering squad.
My wife got a short shifter, and I got a Dension Icelink for Christmas, so I can't wait to get these new goodies installed.
Egads is that why you haven't been around here in awhile?
Can someone ellaborate on the differences in drive and technique? Mine came with it and I cant exactly remember how the stock shifter felt. I agree, it is tougher in the cold but also do like the stiffness and quick throws...
I also liked the short throws, but I've decided to teach my wife to drive the standard and know she will have more trouble with the short shift.
Now that I put the other one back in I'm enjoying it again. It has a nearly perfect feel for each shift. First gear is much easier to get in.
One thing I did different this time is adjust it to the left and back - so it fits in a very natural spot for my hand and length of arm.
That also should help with sixth gear not smacking my wife in the leg - due to the way she likes to sit. Even the short shifter was smacking her in the leg at times.
To adjust it like that, basically the left cable connection is nearly all the way in and the right cable connection is toward the front of allowable adjustment.
Hope that helps.
Oh, just been busy Ken - but you should see the new rear center console I just installed - wow, a really nice paint job by your Bumperplugs sponsor.
I had my short shifter installed Sat. night. Never really thought much about getting one, but my wife asked for one for Christmas after driving a friend's short shifter-equipped CS. Wanting to make her happy, I willingly obliged.
Had I known what I was missing, I would have done it sooner, it seems to complete the car!
Thanks to consolidated for his invaluable assistance w/ the install!
Do you have a location and phone # for Brandywine
Porsche
? Also would you install the
IPD Plenum
again based on HP and Torque increases?
Butch

The short shifter is awesome!
I drove my CS home today (in 35 degree weather). It's a little tight (not annoyingly so) but when this thing breaks in I think it will be perfect. My E36 M3 shifter feels like a wet noodle compared to this thing.
The other thing is it seems to shorten the throws from front to back and not side to side so it is quite easy to find the gears.
Highly recommended!
I had the OEM short shifter on my 01 C2 and my 04GT3, loved having it on them. But decided not to get it again for the
Cayman
. I guess I've matured abit, not to say that having one is immature, but just that my driving style is less boy racer, and I was after a sporty, sexy yet comfortable
Porsche
. For daily driving I prefer the smoothness of the standard shifter, and the longer throw makes for a more relaxed drive imo.
No real difference in driving technique. The Sport Shifter just shortens the throw (length of distance forward to back). This makes the car feel more sporty and requires less arm movement when shifting.
You may find this thread interesting:
http://www.planet-9.com/cayman-chat/9532-shifter-comparison.html
I too find the gate width very wide while the throws are short. I guess this is a good thing in a way because short shifters can result in people picking the wrong gear (going into 2nd when you're trying for 4th). With the wide gate, this isn't an issue. But I wouldn't mind my gate being more narrow.
The Sport Shifter definitely needs to break in before it achieves smooth movement. In 2006, there were many complaints from Cayman buyers about the Sport Shifter. That's why in 2007 Porsche removed the Sport Shifter from the list of options that can be added to dealer inventory cars. They printed a memo on this and said something like, "Because of a high degree of diminished satisfaction among buyers who recieved the sport shifter but were not prepared for a sport shifter, this option will no longer be available for order on dealer inventory cars." It is still available on special order cars and as a dealer installed item, but in this scenario the customer is specifically asking for the option so they are likely to enjoy it.
I agree that a narrower gate might be preferred by those in competition, however, I like the wide gate for the added security of preventing an over-rev.
The new
Cayman
brochure now has the short shifter and an expanded section on the options. There is even a picture showing what appears to be a crocodile covering on the center console
I wonder if
Porsche
is figuring out that many of the folks going for the
Cayman
are doing so more for the engineering than the fact it is a
Porsche
.
Thanks again for all the input.
I have also been thinking of this mod, I had a
Boxster S
on which I thought the 1st & 3rd gears were a bit out of reach & now on the
Cayman S
4th & 6th seem a little too far back and the gearknob when in those positions is too low, there are plenty of other makes on ebay but I'll go for the OEM kit, I expect fitted about £400 less PCGB discount :banana::cheers: I've checked and my guess on the cost has been found to be pretty accurate. £402.50 and my wife says she'll get it me for Christmas so I have to wait a while, I bet the gift she wants costs me...But my reason for fitting it is mostly for the feel of the shorter shift, the weight of the shift is not a concern as I have tried shifting using the lower end of the stick and it snicks through the gate and stroke very smoothly.
Excellent photos and comments. I put one in this week and can't get over the improvement in the manual shift control action. I'll never understand why it's not the standard instead of the current factory set up. Anyway thanks again for the advice.
I'm thinking of adding one.
I have a short shifter in my other car, and the CS unit feels limp in comparison. I'm definitely going to get the factory piece, no B&M for me.
I installed the factory short shifter last week and it feels 100 times better.
i have ordered the factory short shifter and it will be installed by the dealer
next
wednesday.i will post some feedback afterward.i agree with k-mans it should makes shifting more enjoyable and precise.i look forward to it.
yesterday i had the dealer install my short shifter.wow..what a difference..i like it a lot..it does make driving the cs more fun.i see how it feels stiff in the morning when iits cold but thats minor to the fun you get out fit.
TMI !!!!! - this kind of information whould be discussed with your girlfriend, not posted on a public forum! :taunt:
checked with my local dealer and for the short shifter installed it will be $1055.55 plus tax. seems high!
You can order the shifter from Suncoast or Tischer for maybe $450 delivered. Installation is a simple 2-hour job, well defined by posts and articles on this site.
When I test drove (2007)
Caymans
they had two almost identical black CS's. One had the short shift and one did not. Totally different feel. I bought the one with the short shift.
Hard to explain why, other than it is more precise feeling, but it made the car MUCH more fun to drive.
Suncoast
has it on sale for $349
link
I'm thinking about doing this with an exterior color center console.
This car really knows how to suck the money from my pocket!
just ordered it from
suncoast
. I checked with the local dealer and they wanted $505.00 just for the part,
suncoast
was $349.50.
I had one of these installed in my 06/CS last month. Ordered from
Suncoast
for same reason stated earlier. Dealer's price for the part was very high. Installation was done while car was in for an oil, filter and brake fluid change. Dealer charged it's standard rate for 3hrs labor to install it. They did an excellent job. I think it's one of those things you don't try yourself unless you've done it before. Best decision I've made about this car. Great to be rid of that vague shifter. Huge, immediate improvement in drive-ability. Remember to ask the installer to return all the original parts and the green centering template that comes with the short shift kit. Don't forget to figure in a PCA discount on both labor and material (when you order). If you are a member, ask for it. -10% pays for the PCA membership. Good luck and let us all know how the installer did and what you think about the results.
called one of my local dealers, 270.00 for the installation
Installed mine last weekend! It was definitely trickier than I thought it was gonna be. I tried following Swancoat's suggestion to remove the lower tray from the center stack, but for whatever reason I couldn't get the carpeted pieces on the sides of the center stack off. Some pictures of that procedure would have been helpful. I ended up cracking the front of the lower tray piece trying to get the killer screw out, but that portion of the tray is hidden under the shift boot assembly, so I'm not too concerned. All in all, the short shifter is a nice improvement over the stock one, and all Porsches should come like this from the factory.
just had mine installed. labor cost 270.00, A major fun option, highly recommended! Very easy to shift, just like the factory only shorter throws. Like the title say's DO IT !!!
"Well my dealership quoted me 2 hours of labo for a total of $157 to do the install"
I called a few dealers in the bay area & they quoted anywhere from $250-$500 for the
installation!! Did anyone have a non-dealer install for a better price ?
There are a lot of positive comments here. I recently removed a short-shift kit from my
Boxster
and discovered that I can shift faster with the standard than with the notchy feeling kit. It makes me wonder how the
Porsche
short shift would feel. Changing gears with the SS was so much more effort that you spent more time in-between gears just getting it into gear...never mind 1st to 2nd especially when it is cold.
This makes me curious now though to try the Porshce one.
Chris
EDIT:
I just looked at the specs from my old short shift kit and it reduced throw by 40% where as the
Porsche
one states 20% reduction... there you go! That 20% difference is enough to make the OEM one a much better shifter! I think I'll get one
next
week.
I had the OE short shift installed a few weeks ago - dealer ran a 25% off special on parts and service - and I can't say enough good things about it.
I highly recommend this!
Ken what percentage of throw does the factory short shifter reduce the shifts to? I installed the B&M they said it was 30& it is a good shifter but the percentage is less than advertised. I let Momentum install it for me for warranty purposes as well to keep in good standing with them. I have heard the factory was better though and would not hesitate to let them do it again. That is one job I wanted no part of.
I can reply.. the
Porsche
ones states a 20% reduction.
Thanks man!
I am wondering if there are any adjusting that has to be done to cables (where they connect to shifter) or it is just a direct replacement.
Do I just push/snap the threaded cable ends into the half exposed threaded ends of the shifter or are there any adjustments need to be made? Like shorten the cable etc..
No you don't need to shorten the cables.
Sun coast is having a limited sale for $299
Suncoast Porsche, Audi, & VW: <font color="red">Porsche Factory Short Shift Kit - Limited Time Sale</font>
Thanks for the link, that price was too good to pass up, now I just need to get my rear center console painted from bumperplugs and I'll have a good weekend project on my hands.
That's a good project, I did the same thing. You will enjoy the short shifter. The feel is much better than the standard shifter.
You can say that again. Its been in my car since yesterday and man does it make it more fun to drive/shift. The standard shifter going from 4th to 5th always felt like I had to throw it too far. The new feeling of precision and shorter throws make all the gears feel natural and rowing through them even more satisfying. Thanks Suncoast for running the sale.
I could not agree more
Just had the dealer install the OEM SS kit (not low cost by any means) but well worth every nickel. Big improvement. This is a must do for any
Cayman
.
Any thoughts on how this unit compares to the B & B unit ??
Jack
There aren't a lot of mods that are immediately noticeable in the difference they have on a car (except maybe visual mods or something like a supercharger), well I am here to state that the factory short shift is GREAT! IMMEDIATE improvement in the Cayman's shifter, it is literally like driving a whole new car!
First let me thank the fine folks at
Brandywine Porsche
who currently have the short-shifter on sale for only
$399
( a bargain! ) for supplying me with a short shifter kit in short order.
Let's see what the kit looks like:
And here is the part # I believe.... oh wait is that another 997 part? Indeed it is!
As you can see the unit comes pre-assembled, nothing to cut, nothing to drill, simply disconnect the factory unit and replace it with this one.
So what about the installation? Well my dealership quoted me 2 hours of labor for a total of $157 to do the install. After having installed the center console myself, it was worth it to me to pay someone else to do this job this time so I was not able to take photos of the actual install. There are 2 very good articles on installing both the console and shifter in our Articles section:
Installing the EVO Short Shifter
and
Swapping Your Center Console
If you read both of those you can do the short shifter install yourself as it simply requires console removal, then shifting unit removal and isn't as complex as the EVO install.
So what does the factory shifter look like? Here it is:
Sorry that picture came out a little blurry but as you can see a slightly different setup for the linkage and pivot points and a noticeably different shifter arm (shorter). Porsche has basically moved the pivot point downwards.
So how does it feel? AWESOME! I could not order this with my car back at the time I placed my order and after reading a few articles that said (incorrectly I believe) that the Cayman's shifting was shorter than the Boxster's I originally went for the normal shifter. Boy was I surprised at how much better the factory short-shifter is. ALL Caymans ought to come with this in my opinion. If you are even remotely thinking about doing this mod, DO IT, pick up the phone NOW (well you have until April 30th for the sale price from Brandywine) and place an order and set up a time for your dealer to install this shifter, or take the time and do it yourself if you are so inclined.
Any questions???
How is the difference in feel of the shifter. All the reports talk about a stiffer shifter.
Firmer, but not 'stiffer', in other words, very easy to shift, but it shifts firmer, more precise, that's the word - precision shifting! Seriously, drive a car with this shifter and you likely will not go back! It makes the standard shifter feel sloppy, even though it really isn't.
Thanks for another new article, K-Man. Short Shifter is a great option, and though it's subjective, IMHO the shifter is not as "stiff" as even
Porsche
's own sales literature that warns it may be because of cold weather. I think yhe "shorty" feels in perfect balance with the weights & feel of the other controls. The pedals match well for me too.

Couldn't agree more, if I had driven a
Cayman
with the short shifter before ordering I would have included it, but since I didn't, I am glad I added it later.
So does the short shifter resolve the reverse/1st issue people have? Sound like a great and cost effective mod. I live near Brandywine so I'm a go for this! Thanks
K-man S: Thanks for the sharing the great info!
I'm about to order my car and was still on the fence about the short-shifter option.
I'm a novice manual driver and am worried that the short-shifter will make it more
difficult to select the right gear. For example, would it be easier to select 3rd by
mistake if you mean to downshift from 6th to 5th?
Yes, this is one of the best options from
Porsche
.......too bad it isn't the standard shifter.
Install really isn't that hard......did a friends 997 a while ago. Basicallyit's just a swap of the whole shifter frame. The green clip you see in the picture is to set the 'center' point onthe newshifter. It snaps to the side of the shifter frame so that it is totally aligned at install andready to go........just bolt in, attach cables, perform minoradjustments ifany, and your done.
PaCayman,
I don't think it will solve that completely - I think only seat-time will completely remedy as practice will make the biggest difference. As mentioned above, I think the shifts are more precise, and not really all that more 'stiff.' In fact with use, mine has gotten quite fluid, for lack of a better word. From what I can tell with mine, is there's a little extra effort (and I mean just a little) to push it into any gear - and that goes for reverse, too. If that helps, then that's good. I love my SS, and the blast down Hwy 1 this last Monday sealed the deal. It's a much more involving driving experience with it.
brad
I concur with what Beez said....
Nice one! Got my
Porsche
guy looking into a price for me as I type, always fancied this and you've just confirmed all I need to know.
The Tequipment Book has it at £395 including vat and fitting but not sure if it is on sale at present, fingers crossed! I don't fancy fitting it as i just don't have the time or patience at the moment!
Cheers
Dean
It sounds like this is another one of those 'must have' mods.
Thanks K-Man S
Russ
It's pretty cheap for the dealer to install the short shifter. I had mine installed for like $150. The short shifter is a fantastic mod that I think most of you will fall in love with.
Asfar as a "reverse 1st gear issue", I've never had any problem with differentiating R and 1st with the shorty (although I've got the parktronic , which beeps when you hit reverse gear. It's more likely that you'll have to watch the 4th vs 6th gear situation, as that could be the real disaster, 'specially if you're running up the gears in a real hurry.
This is really a GREAT buy!!!! As dealer installed the short shift forme when they got the car at the
Porsche
Option price (795).... Would recommend it to anyone tho.
YES, ORDER FROM BRANDYWINE TODAY!
The sale ends Sunday, but I am assuming they are closed on Sunday and parts may or may not be open on Saturday, so if you are interested in getting this part order from Brandywine today! They ship international btw!
. . .
Porsche
rang me lunch time and confirmed price of £395 GBP including vat and fitting so I told him to order it and book my car in
next
week - can't wait!

For those that can't order from Brandywine today, Carlsen
Porsche
has the short shifter for $399 as well.

Short shifter conversions, particularly B&M, seem to be all the rage on various Porsche boards for Boxsters (and 996s). Does Porsche make an equivalent (or similar) short shift conversion (e.g., from a GT2 or GT3) that will work just as well on a Boxster (and that I can use my $100 PCA coupon for)? If so, will I have any warranty problems in the future? I'm actually happy with the way the shifter works and feels -- is a short shifter that much better?

Porsche does not make any short shifter kit for any of their cars. You will have to buy a couple of useless polo shirts to use that 100.00 certificate. B & M makes a good short shift kit but I don't like short shift kits in cars that are driven very hard. The faster throws make the syncros work harder and they can break and wear out faster. If you like the factory one, my advise is to leave it alone....

fmarshall,
You have to look at the DATE on these type of things, that was written back in 2003 when
Porsche
wasn't making short shift kits, now they are and have been for a couple of years. As far as damaging the synchros that's not true unless you are abusing the transmission, the synchros still travel the same distance regardless of the throw on the stick itself.
