Reported cause

I had one fitted a couple of months ago and very happy, the only slight issue was the fact it wasn't wireless which for the price is a bit poor BUT I picked up a dongle from cplay2air now wireless and even happier.

Suggestion

If the sound isn't to your liking overall it is isn't too difficult to adjust the graphic equaliser, it's still there but hidden and a bit of a pain to get to in the android layer of the stereo (see my video below and it's in the app "car settings").

Suggestion

On page 4 of the pdf it mentions "On 986 vehicles with a new 987.647.105.00 antenna amplifier, the antenna line 986.642.573.00 must also be ordered." I'm assuming you have a late 986 with the 987 booster so will need to order this cable, just check your antenna amplifier had part number 987.647.105.00 written on it and if so ask your nearest OPC's parts department for part 986.642.573.00 if so, I imagine it's just a rarity that so few 986's and no 996's have the later amplifier that it didn't make sense to include in the box or they realised this variant after the kit was assembled, the cable is most likely very cheap if not free for those with a PCCM+.

One other thing, do check your navigation display on the instrument cluster displays correctly, early models show the value for km's for miles so your head unit will say 5 miles to your next turn and you instrument cluster will tell you 8 miles.

Hopefully they will fix this quickly as I daily this car and updating from my PCM 2.0 navigation that had had it's last update in 2016 was a big thing for me and I am a little disappointed that such a fundamental issue is present, I know we all love Porsche but they charge £1350 for the radio another £115 for the navigation and lets face it a similar spec pioneer or alpine would be half that if not less, the major selling points, at least for me is first it's Porsche's own equipment for us who like thing looking like they belong from the factory like me and second the integration with the cars systems i.e.

Hi All Hope everyone is keeping safe and well. Please follow the link below for information on the new Porsche Classic Communication Management plus entertainment system 99664259000. I cannot find a cost at the moment but will look into it. https://content.eu.porsch...vsHs0VytD3jBBmVq9pYYNA

POST 2Original post

I just looked it up. Are you sitting down? ......................................................... £1349.99

POST 4Original post

It does look amazing though , is that a fitted price ?? I would suspect not ??

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Its not a fitted price, but I'm not 100% sure it includes the map date I cannot imagine it would not as all other makers do. https://content.eu.porsche.com/prod/pag/classic/ClassicExplorer.nsf/ClassicPartsExplorerProductDetail?ReadForm&country=international&la=enGB&se=&mo=&my=&ca=&pr=5E8256DD4D14097AC125850B0036634F The above Porsche unit looks good but its only a 7" screen. If you compare it to the Alpine units below it is rather expensive and the Alpine units are easy to update and i assume will be far cheaper than the Porsche item. https://www.alpine.co.uk/p/Products/head-units5

POST 7Original post

It has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so you can use your smartphone navigation app, like Google maps, Waze, etc., which don't need updating. I'm not sure how much mobile data that uses though.

POST 8Original post

TBH, as stated above, Google Maps would be your best bet and you get live traffic etc. However, as we know the Internet isn't always reliable so good to have something in case of flat phone etc. Of course, I'm guessing this price wont be cheap either, but also will need to be updated, so I assume an ongoing cost?

POST 10Original post

Having tried a number of different aftermarket double din units, I would be very interested in trying out one of these units, even at that price. Provided it performs well and is decent quality, i don't think its too expensive as I would attach a premium for it to look oem. Over the years I've tried a number of double din units from parrot, pioneer and most recently a 'floating' unit from Joying. None of them have work particularly well, the parrot unit was one of the first android head units so that one doesn't really count. The pioneer was the first of the carplay compatible headunits and even though it was decent quality, it still required jumping through a bunch of hoops to get it wired in to the oem loom so I didn't strip the car down entirely just to run new speaker wires (I also wired in a new power amp). The same issue goes for the joying unit, but has additional problems. I had not been massively keen on the 6" screen on the pioneer, so I went for a floating 8" screen with the joying, this fixes the screen real estate problem, but it also hides the rest of the buttons on the centre console, so not ideal for turning on the rear wiper!. Aftermarket headunits might look cheap in comparison, but if you look at Alpines freestyle X703D-F version, which might provide a decent install, or one of pioneers newer floating style units (DMH-WC6600NEX), they aren't much cheaper than this PCCM one, and you have to put up with the terrible quality double din surrounds that are out there and budget for a new amp and awkward installation. If I wasn't looking at selling my car, I'd be seriously considering one of these.

That looks brilliant. But I have a question. Will it still connect to the multi-CD player that's under the hood so I can play my old CDs as well? I know that's really retro and I should have digitised my collection by now, but hey, some of us like the old tech too!

POST 13Original post

Been quoted £1970 for the plus unit fitted by my local OPEC but will probably be able to negotiate a small discount. The chap I deal with says when he gets back to work he will be inundated with these as he has been asked so many times on how to retro fit Apple car play into the older models.

POST 14Original post

From what I have seen, there is no provision on the PCCM units for a connection to the MOST (fibre optic) bus. See the photos in the attachment. MOST is an oblong 2-pole connector, and I can't see one. MOST is used for the CDC, Amplifier, and Telephone modules on MY2003 cars onwards. (Either PCM2.0 or CDR23). @ Eddie - Did they say how they would handle the amplifier connection?

POST 15Original post

Hi Richard No as I only asked for cost to install to my 2003 996 Turbo. I will eventually get more details as I am on their list once things are up and running again. Eddie

POST 16Original post

Pretty sure I saw on the Porsche page for this that there is no CD changer control

POST 17Original post

Many thanks Andy and everyone for the info. I’m sure most of us would agree that this is a huge step forward from PMC2. I will contact my OPC for a fitted price when they reopen. 996 C4S

POST 20Original post

Thanks to Andy's early notice to everyone concerning the launch of this new unit, I ordered one last week from Teile.com. It arrived yesterday and although I normally run a mile from anything electric on modern cars, I persuaded myself that it was likely to be relatively easy as it is an OEM solution, and if it wasn't easy I could always persuade my dealership to fit it once they reopen. My car is a 2005 Turbo S. It certainly took me more time than a dealer, but I'm pleased to say it is now up and running. Will post some photos later, (but in a separate post as I lost all my written post yesterday when I tried to add images, so am playing safe.) This is my first contribution to the forum so am not particularly au fait. A couple of comments for those who may be thinking of doing the same. 1) There are no written fitting instructions or images so you have to work out from observation which bits of wire and/or connectors are relevant to your model, as it comes with a large number so it covers a wide range of models and so all the possible bases. Fortunately as all the connectors are unique and colour coded, the scope for error is low. The challenge is figuring out which additional units or adpaters are necessary for your particular model, eg relevant to my car, there a splitter to separate out DAB from the normal radio antenna. 2) The external control unit through which you connect your phone (or a USB source) has a relatively short loom. The Porsche website shows this external unit located to the front of the optional cubby hole below the main unit. My car previously had a CD storage unit there, and so I bought the requisite cubby hole separately on line, and concluded that it would be best to cut a large hole in the rear (the same size as the control unit) so that the connecting loom could reach the back of the AV unit before it is inserted into the double din. Once the main unit is in the double din, you can then pull the small control unit forward in the cubby hole. In fact I've left mine towards the back (half in, half out) as it leaves more room for the phone. Since they supply a velcro fixing it is fine to relocate it. It took me a bit of trial and error to work out that cutting a hole just for the wires would not give me the requisite length. 3) The map data is definitely a separate purchase. 4) Likewise I can confirm that there is no connection for the existing multi CD player. 5) The unit doesn't easily slip into the double din slot as it has different lugs, but with a bit of trial and error I am now comfortable that it will neither fall out or rattle. Its just the old unit had some very strong OEM clamps and this one doesn't. One other tip is that the default setting for the phone is 'external microphone' so if you are not fitting the one supplied you need to go into the menu to uncheck otherwise no voice pick up. I expected my existing OEM mic in the dash to be operative but for some reason it wasn't although the existing loom plugged into one of the sockets. When I post the photos you will see how there is a small internal shelf supplied on which to locate some of the adapaters for the DAB and the audio. Photos to follow later tonight or over the weekend if anyone is interested. The graphics are classy and I am a fan of ApplePlay as I have a modern ApplePlay compatible unit fitted in a similar vintage AM Vanquish. The touchscreen is very neat, and it blends well with the rest of the dash. It doesnt feel at all out of place and brings the car up to date. I hope this is helpful. I am delighted.

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Philip Thanks for the update and your comments. Its a pity the map data not included in the price, will be interested to see the photos when you post them. Well done, Keep safe & enjoy. Andy

POST 22Original post

Hi, thanks for the update, it’s very helpful. How much did you pay from Teile and did the unit come with a DAB antenna.? When my dealership opens I was going to ask for a price and hopefully get my discount. Was the map data included. Cheers, Philip

POST 25Original post

The two main points are: 1) The assembly of a small shelf (supplied) on which to mount the various adaptors. THe adaptor on the left of the photo is the splitter for the radio signal into DAB and FM. The unit on the right is the adaptor for the OEM mike input (I think). 2) The hole I made in the back of the cubby hole to allow the external control unit for the phone to slide all the way back when I needed the wires to be at full length in the DIN slot. Once the main unit is in the slot then the control unit can be moved nearer the front.

POST 26Original post

I’m thinking to leave the small unit hidden away behind and run a USB extension to a USB plate installed inside the cubby between the front seats

POST 28Original post

I'm no expert but basically there is a splitter that allows a single feed to be shared bewteen two inputs (DAB and 'normal') on the main unit. If you have the ability to add a separate DAB aerial then the splitter isn't needed I guess.

POST 29Original post

No DAB antenna and I've had to order the map data card separately. There is however a blank Micro SD card supplied for you to add your own media

POST 30Original post

Or let me clarify, I dont think one of the left over pieces is a DAB antenna but its possible. Will post a separate photo of the orphan pieces.

POST 31Original post

Thanks - my C4S has had a Pioneer installed by the previous owner and a very slapdash installation of one of those god-awful stuck on DAB antennae

POST 32Original post

[Image-only or quote-only post; no author-written text.] https://i.imgur.com/Hs5CbUo.jpg

POST 33Original post

If you’ve got DAB, you’ve done it right I’d say ...

POST 34Original post

The long black wire with the ivory connector may be a DAB aerial but its beyond my knowledge.

POST 35Original post

Looks like a GPS antenna, MOST loop, microphone(?) and various extenders. What’s the gold plug at the bottom, black plug and power at the other end ?

POST 36Original post

And you can see from the photo there is an external mike and an aerial for GPS. My car had both already although I can't seem to get the OEM external mike to work. A job for another day. If needs be I will deploy the new external mike once I've decided where it is unobtrusive.

POST 37Original post

My car also has both but I don’t know if the existing connectors will be correct.

POST 38Original post

I'm afraid I don't know what that piece is . Maybe someone who is more expert can advise in due course.

POST 39Original post

Further feedback on the USB and Phone USB slots as follows: Both my wife and I have iPhones. Mine is set up to use Siri and Apple CarPlay in another vehicle. Hers isn’t set up for Siri, but she uses the 996 a lot and wants to play music from her phone. If her phone is plugged into the phone slot, unless she activates Siri on it she can’t get any further. And so she has to switch the lead over to the USB slot to play her music. On my phone I can use either slot for music but obviously need to use the phone slot for CarPlay as well as music. So my point is that if you plan to keep the supplied USB/ Aux/Phone box hidden, and just run a USB extension lead, you will need to decide which of the two USB style slots to use, depending on whether you use Siri, and whether anyone else who uses the car wants the same set up. If the box is exposed then you can obviously change the slot to which the phone connects whenever you like and so accommodate both parties. Sorry if this sounds complicated, it’s just my wife hates Siri and she uses the car more than me! If you are the sole user then it could make a lot of sense to run just one loose cable as you suggest, and keep the box hidden.

POST 49Original post

Thanks - I was actually planning to install a faceplate with two USB’s and a 3.5mm in the centre cubby and run three cable to it. So I keep all the functionality

POST 50Original post

If anyone else wants to just play music. Just fit a Bluetooth receiver behind the head unit. You'll find the aux input and a 12v supply from the telephone input there. I will cost you all of £2.50-£5 Run android auto or apple car play on your phone which is probably with you anyway and keep you car looking as it should. Save the money to fix your Porsche perishables.

so i have ordered the unit and map from tiele - shoudl be here next week castorman and others have given some good tips for fitting but any others would be great starting with how to removbe the old unit ! castorman - i also have the CD unit below the old unit - you mention you bought a cubby to fit this space - if you have details please thanks

POST 55Original post

Mine is meant to arrive from Teile today. waiting for DHL... I am trying to see if Wrighttune will fit it as I need a service and suspension work too.

POST 56Original post

Shelf here https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/202597804344

POST 57Original post

That’s great Matt thanks. In my C4S there is a CD magazine fitted below the PCM. Will this shelf replace it does anyone know?

POST 58Original post

Yes. I had a CD magazine below my unit and replaced it with this type of cubby hole. I fitted the box with the USB connections into it. if you look at my photos above you can see that I cut a hole in the back to allow the USB box some room to move whilst I was reinserting the new unit in the double din slot as the loom is quite short. All I needed was a Stanley knife. The USB box can then be fixed using the supplied Velcro fittings.

POST 59Original post

As to removing the old unit, I found a video on YouTube which showed the key steps.. Basically you lever off the horseshoe shaped fitting with all the switches on it. This then gave access, at least for my old unit, to the four fixings, that is two each side, which needed to be turnedthrough approx 90 degrees by an Allen key before the old unit could be pulled out. The video is posted by Enfig and shows a beige/ light grey dash on a 996. (If I recall there is a different Enfig video which shows a Boxster which was longer but less helpful.) link is https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3D8AU_di9BzIQ&sa=U&ved=2ahUKEwjAvZ-utrTpAhX3aRUIHWHsBoMQtwIwAHoECAcQAQ&usg=AOvVaw0dKnBS4E0L_czdgwJPQcg4 It wasn’t super obvious as to how the new unit is bolted in as it doesn’t come with equivalent fixings.

POST 60Original post

That’s really helpful Castorman, many thanks. Did a DAB antenna come with the package and where did you fit one in the car. Do you manage to get digital radio ok.

POST 61Original post

I used the supplied splitter to provide input to the DAB feed. I did get a couple of DAB stations when stationary but for obvious reasons I haven’t been able to drive and find out how decent a solution this is when underway on the road. All the parts I didn’t use are shown in the second set of photos I posted above. It is possible that the long black cable with the ivory connector is a DAB feed. The other two long black cables are definitely a GPS aerial and a microphone so it’s the third which I’m guessing is possibly a DAB cable. As you can tell I’m afraid I’m no expert. The last piece of radio fitting I did was on my first Minivan back in 1972 so please make appropriate allowances. Actually the reason I was confident is that the connectors were colour-coded and had tailored fastenings so it was quite hard to go wrong.

Give Greg a call at Auto Audio in Park Royal if you get stuck. They are officially closed but taking calls - tell him Rehan sent you and he’ll be able to advise you on anything. Some of the OPCs send cars there and they have done high end installations / rebuilds for many notable people - e.g. Eric Clapton, Idris Ebla, Jazzy B, Royal families, etc. And of course ordinary people like myself... But it seems from the wealth of details on this thread you may like to Give it a bash yourself!

POST 81Original post

Porsche Tonbridge just started adding to my car this afternoon.

POST 82Original post

Dear Castorman, Thank you for your write up, I purchased one last week nd have been trying to fit it. I have been led to believe that the small black wire with the gold end is a bypass for the amplified aerial(drivers door pillar) the wire with the blue ends is to bypass the diversity control box in the passenger footwell. Obviously you have not used either. Can you tell Me what connector you have connected to the white connector of the FM/DAB splitter(silver box left side of shelf) top photo. Are you getting the full range of DAB FM/AM radio, I’m not getting my Radio DAB or otherwise, but then I have fitted both the bypass’. Just one observation about your write up the PCCM plus should have been placed into the Black plastic frame before assembly of the side plates and shelf. Many thanks in advance. Sean

POST 84Original post

Mine was in the passenger Footwell, it is an amplifier for the am/fm aerials.

POST 85Original post

This is the Diversity Control Module, on my car it was in the Passenger Footwell, just above the carpet. Access is very restricted I had to pull back the carpet the get to the mounting bracket to disconnect the 2 single wires to insert the bypass cable. https://www.flickr.com/photos/189011711@N05/50038120233/in/dateposted-public/

POST 86Original post

Hi Sean, I’m afraid I may not be much help here. My car is a late Turbo S and my aerial has an ivory coloured connector which went straight onto the end of the box you refer to. So it didn’t require much thought on my side. I‘m not technical by background so it was trial and error. I’m not sure whether I have a diversity controller and will definitely have a look see. I think the challenge is that the package is supplied with a full range of connectors to make it compatible with many different model years, and so most of us who are following a DIY approach are having to figure out what connectors are needed without the benefit of written instructions. im afraid I’ve been busy so can’t confirm whether DAB is working as it’s not been a priority. FM is definitely working well and so I’ve not really explored further. It has flagged DAB as working but the only channels I have put into memory are on FM. thx for the comment on assembling the tray. I have managed to fit my unit without having disassembled the cup holder and the ventilation grilles, but if you have done this and found that effectively the brackets for the shelf also act as the fixing to the internal frame that is probably a better solution. I was able to extract the old unit without disassembling the cup holder etc and likewise have been able to insert the new unit, although there is not a suitably engineered way of locking it in as there are no fasteners, so your way is probably correct. Apologies if I have sent anyone down the wrong path. sorry not to be more help. Please keep posting comments as you work your way through, as I’m sure it will help anyone else who is going it alone.

POST 87Original post

Hi everyone, got mine fitted and happy to help anyone having issues or questions regarding. I have found an issue/software bug affecting us UK customers who bought the navigation for our new PCCM+'s Assuming you have a car with the OBC and navigation enabled you will get navigation instructions direct to your instrument cluster just like the PCM 2.0 did so you don't have to look down all the time to check your navigation. What I noticed is the instructions are not correct for us in the UK using miles instead of kilometres, this issue will also affect the USA when they get round to releasing this there I guess with SIRIUS support and any other country still using miles. Essentially if you switch your units between kilometres and miles on the PCCM+ navigation your display on the instrument cluster will change the unit on the navigation directions to have the suffix mls or km as you would expect. However, the value is always the value for kilometres. Example: your PCCM+ says your next turn off is in 18 miles, but your instrument cluster will say your next turn off is in 30mls at the same time. 18miles is around 30km and if you change the units on your PCCM+ to km at the same time the PCCM will display your next turn off is in 30km and your cluster will update from 30 mls to 30 km. Picture below shows the problem: https://www.flickr.com/ph.../in/dateposted-public/ Here's a video I made demonstrating the issue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNMY10sKXO0 If you also have this issue would you mind also messaging Porsche customer services as I have done to perhaps provoke them to offer a software fix, the radio already has the option to update by USB in the options menus so wouldn't be too hard if they even just offered a update file to download and some instructions. Hopefully they will fix this quickly as I daily this car and updating from my PCM 2.0 navigation that had had it's last update in 2016 was a big thing for me and I am a little disappointed that such a fundamental issue is present, I know we all love Porsche but they charge £1350 for the radio another £115 for the navigation and lets face it a similar spec pioneer or alpine would be half that if not less, the major selling points, at least for me is first it's Porsche's own equipment for us who like thing looking like they belong from the factory like me and second the integration with the cars systems i.e. the instrument cluster. Also hoping they don't resort to the same fix as the GPS rollover on the PCM 2.1's where the update just made the date disappear rather than correct it, I hope this feature is fixed rather than just removed. Just to note to test this setting on the radio when you will need to move the car slightly for the cluster to update as well, just pull forward a meter or so and it will update to km or mls as set. Also interesting, you can access a layer on the radio to view the underlying android system on it, heres a video I made on how to access it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQO_smQNB6Q

POST 88Original post

Mine is still in Porsche Edinburgh getting fitted. It was completed last week, but Porsche have identified a problem and are releasing a software fix next week in the UK. It's sat-nav related, so maybe the issue you're seeing. I've told them to keep mine in until they have the fix as i'm currently enjoying the courtesy Cayenne they gave me, so another week is ok with me!

POST 89Original post

Thanks for that response, I'll get on the phone to Porsche Centre Reading and see what they can do regarding the update. *update* coincidentally upon going out today I noticed something new, now my car menu's limit their use with a warning if you try to do to much while the car is in motion which it definitely did not do yesterday, it seems like the PCM's supplied with the latest Porsche's updates are made automatically via a phone connected by bluetooth, or at least thats what I assume since I don't see how else this new feature has appeared and I was getting my partner to change between miles and kilometre while I was driving quite a lot yesterday to test the issue previously mentioned so would have noticed it for sure. Bodes well for a fix for the miles/kilometres issue since it seems they are actively updating the system, perhaps they are just not yet aware of the issue. So far in regard to checking this issue with Porsche Centre Reading: Service bookings told me to ask reception to put me through to a service specialist which weren't available so will call back later, later get a call from the lady I was put through to at the beginning for service bookings so was then put back to reception to again be told I would get a call back later from a specialist so fingers crossed this time I'll get a call from the right person.

POST 90Original post

Presumably having the new upgrade fitted sorts out the wrong date and time issue a few of us are experiencing now our cars are older. Can anyone confirm if this is the case? Really asking to find out if the date/time issue is indeed from the CDR2 unit. Thanks.

POST 91Original post

Are you referring to the PCM2? CDR's 23 and 24 don't have GPS and don't display the date. The PCM 2 does however and the time and date it gets from the GPS is synced with the instrument cluster too. These units suffer from GPS rollover, essentially GPS's of this vintage have the issue of they only have a 10 bit register for which week they are in based on the reference start date in 1999 this means 1024 weeks after this date the reference for the week which was either April or may 2019 depending on the GPS, the 10 bit register rolls over from 1111111111 to 0000000000 and the GPS thinks it's 1999 again and displays as such. We had the same issue in 1999 with the first GPS's with a 10 bit register originating in 1980's but less products had GPS's from then so was less of an issue. a lot of products are saved because you can just update software to fix this which alot of companies did. In fact I worked at a company last year that makes seismometers for scientific study as an engineer and we had exactly this issue which we just fixed with a software update and GPS's which could not be updated we supplied a modern replacement GPS. Porsche however elected not to do this in either capacity, they I'm guessing new the PCCM plus was in the pipeline, why offer an update for a very old and limited system when we can sell a complete new radio. PCM 2.1's from the 997 have the same issue but Porsche release and update that just blanks the date from being seen, bit more lazy that fixing it. Long explanation I'm sorry but yes the new radio does not suffer this problem and I believe new GPS's for the most part now are fitted with 12 bit registers so they are safe for 80 years or so from the new start date and again a software update would fix all if it came to it.

POST 92Original post

Official word on the navigation bug from Porsche customer services, Porsche are aware of the issue and will be providing an update. I assume they will do the same as they did on the newer cars, offering this to those who enquire about the issue, as the reality is unless you have a car without the OBC or the functions enabled you will never experience this issue and even if you do, you may never notice.

POST 93Original post

Thanks BatKing996C4S, great explanation, but my 996 shows the correct date initially when I put the ignition on and can do for a few minutes whilst out driving then changes to a 00 year date consistent to when it first started changing. Hopefully a possible software update will sort it, not that I'm really bothered.

POST 94Original post

No problem. thats the issue though, the date change you will find happens when the GPS syncs, if you don't use the navigation since the last update was in 2016 you can simply pull the navigation insert out the back of radio, just slides in and out and when out the setting menu will allow you to manually set the time and date, of course it just says navigation unavailable if you try to use any of the nav related buttons. Unfortunately when plugged in it only allows you to update the date by GPS which will then update to the wrong date. From what I understand that correct date is stored however if the battery is disconnected for a few minutes the radio's internal memory resets and it will then no longer show the correct date, that was my experience when I still had a PCM 2.0,. I'm afraid since Porsche released the PCCM+ for 996/986 and officially dropped map support in 2016 I don't believe there will be a further update like the PCM 2.1 which they just made the date disappear, its a shame they in such cases where they don't have any interest in support don't release the source code, plenty of talented software engineers who could modify it to an update to show the correct date in an afternoon. I tried my hand as and electrical engineer on a hardware level and was able to source the data lines between the GPS board and rest of the navigation circuit and even got an Arduino to tell it the correct date with a random location, however being a Garmin propriety GPS of the time I wasn't quite invested enough to take the time to programme the arduino to read the code from a modern GPS and transmit it in the Garmin format. Bit overboard but I really wanted the date to show correctly, naturally after putting in that effort when I heard the PCCM+ was coming out I was quick to list my PCM on ebay to fund the new system. I recommend the new system though, it's essentially the PCM you get in a new 911 and even costs a quarter of the cost of specing a PCM in a new 911 and at least for me I was able to make over half the money for the new system by listing my old PCM 2.0, plus if you have a later car as your 2004 you get all the benifits of it talking to your instrument cluster.

POST 95Original post

Loving my new Pccm+ - Stunning bit of kit. I want to sell my old PCM 2 but don’t have any code to go with it. Do you still need code if putting into a different 996. If so is that something a Porsche Centre can do for the buyer if I don’t have the code. I would think it would need to be coded to a new chassis number anyway. Help needed !! Thanks in advance.

POST 96Original post

I know people who have tried fitting a used PCM2, but with limited success by coding. It seems like you need to get the unit decoded to remove the protection. Someone like DND Services or Maple Audio may be able to help with that. Personally, I see little benefit of putting a 20+ year old navigation system in a car, just because it was original fitment. Your experience with PCCM+ has highlighted how out of date the old system was.

POST 97Original post

I had mine finally fitted this week. So happy with it. It’s expensive but for me I’d say it brings an 18 year old car so up to date internally that a non-Porsche person would struggle to date a well detailed example.

POST 98Original post

Thanks Richard. Yep the new system with apple car play etc certainly brings it up to date. I have listed the old one as it seems a shame to just bin it. I have checked with the workshop manager at Porsche Tonbridge who kindly got back to me to say: “Glad you’re pleased with it! If someone buys your unit they will need to have it coded by a Porsche Centre. The code they need will be like the one below, but for their own vehicle. The one below is for your vehicle as an example, however this won’t work for someone who buys your PCM they need their vehicle and the PCM.” So added that to my listing. If it does not work out I can just refund buyer & they can chuck it. Hope that makes sense. In short, they need to take the PCM and the car to be coded together.

POST 99Original post

Does anyone know how up to date the maps are with this new unit? Given that Porsche charge a hansom sum for new updates, it would be nice to know how current this release actually is. All these posts are getting my juices flowing for this upgrade...

POST 100Original post

For what it’s worth, I was ready to spring for the maps and the installer told me not to bother, Porsche Nav is bad and you’re better off with CarPlay or Android auto

POST 101Original post

Hi, I'm afraid what you've been told is not true, my past experience is the OPC don't have a clue when is comes to older cars and rattle of things they think may be the case rather than what is factual. The PCM 2.0 is plug and play no coding required, I had one in my 986, sold it and the guy who bought it plugs it in and got it all working no problem I retrofitted two different ones I bought of eBay to 996's I've had and again plug and play, finally I sold one of those PCM 2.0's on when I got my PCCM+ and the guy who bought it off me again fitted to his 996 plug and play. Only thing you need a dealer/indie or anyone with a PIWIS for is if you want to turn on the gauge cluster information on for the audio information and navigation directions if you originally had a single din radio will still function without this but you just won't have the gauge cluster info, if you are replacing a bad PCM 2.0 with a straight up replacement you won't need to code anything. So they don't need to code the PCM and car together at the stealership, saves a few quid than an hourly rate for them to realise nothing needed doing and charge for that realisation

POST 102Original post

The maps are marked as Q2 2019 on the box. Really disagree here, the maps are TOMTOM, they are a TOMTOM interface with a Porsche looking skin to match the radio. Having tried android auto and CarPlay on mine I can't bare using them compared to the factory card which is head an shoulder above in terms of driving directions. plus with Carplay or Android Auto your instrument cluster will only read App Navigation on the screen when getting directions, while the Porsche Navigation will give you the actual directions and distances on your instrument cluster so you don't have to look down at your map. see below.

POST 103Original post

Interesting. Might reconsider. My dash display doesn’t say App Navigation which leads me to be a little suspicious of the install

POST 104Original post

Do you have the on board computer, i.e. a second stalk on the bottom left under your indicator stalk? if so you can defiantly get it working. What radio did you have originally? These are things the original PCM 2.0 could do and if your car came with a PCM 2.0 in the car then you can just select whats on the bottom screen by pushing it up and down, like you can change the upper display as you can also see on my picture to show the name of what I'm listening to via bluetooth, on the SD card radio station name ect again with Carplay or Android Auto this only say App Audio when set. if you had a CDR23 before then you just need a dealer/indie or anyone with a PIWIS and get them to enable navigation and audio information on the instrument cluster and then you have this feature. the older cars, i.e. your digital speed readout is in the middle rather than the left then this isn't something the car can do. Yeah Plenty of dodgy installs I've seen with these so far, there a video on youtube. this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmWw6GCp6rE Think it's the only install video and they guy installing from JZMPorsche saying the USB box won't reach the glove compartment on RHD car which is untrue as I have done it, and the reason he thinks this way is he doesn't bother to take the frame out for the install and doesn't secure the radio in place. This is from people claiming to be Porsche specialists. He also mounts the microphone in the wrong place to avoid putting it in the correct place. Worst of all he shows near the end he has the instructions from Porsche, I've seen a copy of these and it details exactly what you need to do and seems he just ignored them.

POST 105Original post

I had JZM do some work last year and let’s just say I was “less than impressed”. Mine has OBC. i had Wrighttune do mine as I wanted cruise control added. They installed it how I wanted it but maybe they didn’t know this trick. I need to get some internal parts done at an OPC later this year anyway so I guess will ask them to check the install and wiring into the computer.

POST 106Original post

Thanks very much indeed for the info - I will email the chap who has just bought it with your advice.

POST 107Original post

The map SD card I purchased is from late 2019. Having my unit fitted imminently but not by OPC.

POST 108Original post

the new units seem to be out of stock everywhere sadly

POST 109Original post

Thanks for confirming the map status. I guess I will have to wait until availability improves. Many thanks for all the useful info.

POST 110Original post

The Units not out of stock as such, Porsche have stopped selling them until they release an update fixing a bug on the system, they will then update their existing stock and then you will be able to buy them again, someone on 911UK said their dealer quoted this is meant to be sorted for sale again in September. Once released all existing owners will have the option of recall to get theirs updated at their local Porsche OPC as Porsche didn't see it fit to simply offer something like a USB update files or something smart like that. I realised this issue and contacted Porsche customer services who said they will get in touch as soon as the update is released to book me in for an update. but naturally Porsche would rather hold stock and update them in house then recommence sale than continue selling the units then pay dealer franchises a ton of extra labour on all the recall updates. What it is, is theres an issue that on the instrument cluster with the SD navigation where if you set the units on the PCCM to miles not kilometers it changes to have the suffix mls which it should but the number is always the number in kilometres. so if your turn off is say 5 miles away the radio will say 5 miles but the instrument cluster will say 8mls and if you then set it to kilometres you would realise then it would change to 8kilometers and say 8km on the cluster. Funny thing is this doesn't affect anyone who doesn't want to use the TOMTOM maps and would rather use carplay or android auto or anyone with a pre MOST and OBC car so of the niche market of the PCCM+ this won't affect I think anyone with a pre 2003 996/986. I'm glad though having a 2004 996 C4S this does affect me, however the radio is perfectly useable so glad I got one before the cut off till September. Just classic example of not thoroughly testing a product and just relying on thinking what to told it to do works. Hopefully the update fixes the issue rather than just removes the instrument cluster communication like how the solution from Porsche for the GPS rollover on the PCM2.1's was just to hide the date from the main screen, if you went into settings you could still see it thought it was the wrong date but on the main screen it was just a blank box where the date used to be. Below a picture of when I documented the problem.

POST 111Original post

I have a PanasonicAVIC-Z820DAB. Fitted by Road Radio in Crawley. Its been excellent. Not cheap but a huge improvement on the old unit. USB cables in the glove box but I haven't had to use them as Apple Play kicks in. Haven't connected to CD changer as its 21st Century and who wants to change CDs when you have everything on the phone.

POST 112Original post

Hi I got an SD card in my PCCM+ box but it seems to be blank. I assume that this card is to download music on to and goes in the SD slot on the PCCM+? And the SD card for maps needs to be purchased separately and it goes in the Maps slot on the PCCM+? Thanks in advance.

POST 114Original post

Thanks for first response. On the back of that I bought the map data SD card too. Just put it in the slot and I'm getting this message: "sorry, igo navigation has stopped" any ideas? Thanks in advance again!!

POST 115Original post

My unit was fitted last week. Mostly very pleased with it. My Nav SD card works fine...but struggling to copy ITunes onto my blank SD card in Media function. Googled 'how to move your ITunes onto a SD card'..followed the online advice.....Dragged my music albums over on my PC onto the card but the PCCM+ won't play them in media mode. The unit lists the individual ITunes tracks but won't play any of them. Any ideas from the more IT literate membership out there please? Dave S

POST 116Original post

I’d guess it’s a DRM problem. If these are iTunes tracks you’ve downloaded as an iTunes subscriber (as opposed to bought), they will probably only play using CarPlay. this would be the case on most devices, not specific to PCCM

POST 117Original post

Hi Dave did you just put the card in the slot and switch on? Then press "Navi" and it sprung into life? Thx

POST 118Original post

Yes it was just plug in & play, took a few moments to load but I have to say quite impressed with the Nav system. Maybe try a full re boot on "factory reset" in settings & try again? Another issue to watch for if fitting one of these is the alarm system. My old PCM1 & 8bit CD Nav unit were connected to the car's alarm system. My fitter reconnected the new system & now my horn sounds once when I set the alarm on locking the car.....just like when you leave the frunk or glovebox or cubby open. According to OPC need to disconnect new unit as 996 alarm system won't recognise it.....will get there in the end.

POST 119Original post

ok thanks for the tips; will try reset cheers, bill

I think the Aircon controls can be moved down

POST 122Original post

Thanks Matt, I hope so as I’d love one. Hoping someone has some pictures they can share

POST 123Original post

Will send some pics of mine later if you like

POST 125Original post

It’s not problem to do, the kit comes with everything electrical you need to fit the PCCM to a 996 with a single din radio, you will however need parts 996.552.339.00.01C (the new trim for the air con controls which can be fitted in the bottom shelf location), and part 9965522311201C (replacement radio frame for the PCM, this allows you to fit the double din radio as the existing frame has a separator in the middle and doesn’t have the support for the PCCM to clamp against.

POST 126Original post

Rob, Yes it will fit but you will need to move the heater controls down & may need additional surround trim dependent on how your centre console is configured. I have a 02 Targa but had PCM1 double din. Delighted with the new unit.

POST 127Original post

I love the look of that. I presume you lose the trip-functionality (Distance, time, mpg, etc) of the PCM2?

POST 128Original post

I replaced a PCM1 unit with the PCCM+ but it will be same for PCM2 I think. You do lose the trip computer functionality on the audio unit screen however I can still access, reset & scroll through the trip/MPG/average speed/outside temp etc on the OBC in the driver's instrument cluster in the dash.

POST 129Original post

any update on when this kit will be available again ?

POST 131Original post

I had the PCCM+ fitted to my 02 Targa last week - it is fabulous Installed by GT-One, they needed to relocate the aircon controls but they did the job well

POST 132Original post

Thanks Andrew, that’s just up the road from me as I’m in Woking area. Would you mind telling us all rough costs please?

POST 133Original post

The PCCM+ unit plus all the various bits required (they also ordered the SD map card, which is worth having if one does not have mobile signal for Waze, plus aerial connector for DAB, microphone and a couple of covers) cost £1,282.77 excl VAT. Fitting, net of Club discount, was £228.15 excl VAT. They had to do a major job to remove the dash of my car to get to some leaking firewall gaskets that were letting substantial amounts of water into the interior, so this cost was incremental to the dash work being done. Not sure if it made much difference. They had to relocate the aircon controls and remove a CD storage rack. The fit is nice and tidy, and looks like it could have been there since new. My 02 facelift Targa now has the same functionality as my 18 plate Cayenne, and I am used to the various screens etc. The Targa has the Bose sound system (speaker upgrade and amp) in the Targa, and the PCCM+ integrates seamlessly with it. Sound quality is very good. I had a CDR-22 before in my car, and I liked it very much as a radio. I was quoted some fairly steep amounts to have Bluetooth fitted to it (although Chrome London seem to have a more reasonably priced kit). In the end, I thought I would prefer to have Apple CarPlay, to completely remove the risk of having to touch my phone when I am driving the car (and falling foul of the law). It was pricey but worthwhile. Gives me the same functionality as in a very new car, and can continue to enjoy my Targa, so it is a worthwhile upgrade for me, particularly since it looks like it could have been there since new.

POST 134Original post

I bought a Sony double DIN DAB with Apple Car Play for £275 from Halfords, plus £40 for a new internal DAB antenna, then looked on line for the 996 Double DIn fitting kit - £40 ish, somewhat cheaper than the £1750 scandalous rip off OPCs charge

POST 135Original post

That sounds like good value Notserpg. Any pics of how it looks installed? Also, where did you find the fitting kit and did it include harness connections so you could use what was already in the car - IE, no cutting and splicing involved? Also, does your car have Bose as I have heard, but not understood, that this can complicate matters. Many thanks.

POST 136Original post

I enquired at PORSCHE Cambridge about updating my Bose system, but I was told they were unsure of compatibility & would get back to me. I am still waiting to hear.

POST 137Original post

Just picked up my car fro Precision Porsche with the new PCCM+ fitted and they did an excellent tidy job. I got the PCCM+ (and the map SD) from Tiele and the cubby from ebay. Still finding my way around the system but for the moment it is nice just to have a working radio. Fitting was 255+vat and i paid about 70 for a new genuine console side panel as the old handset unit was also removed. If anyone is interested in a part functioning PCM2 and a working 8-cd autochanger then mine is available for shipping cost. Message for details.

POST 138Original post

also.. the SD card has the navigation manual as a pdf but not the operating manual - does anyone have this ?

POST 142Original post

I had one fitted a couple of months ago and very happy, the only slight issue was the fact it wasn't wireless which for the price is a bit poor BUT I picked up a dongle from cplay2air now wireless and even happier. Oh totally transformed the car it now feels quit modern!

POST 143Original post

cplay2air, great idea. Good to know it works !

POST 144Original post

Hi i just picked up a standard one I’m pretty sure there all the same, updates arrive reasonably often.

POST 145Original post

Great idea! Hadn't thought of getting a wireless adapter. Will definitely get one of these now. Thanks.

POST 146Original post

Hello All I've had the modified P.C.C.M. Plus unit fitted to my 2003 996 C2 for just over 2 months now. Unfortunately I'm now experiencing a problem with my Fuel Computer/Trip Reader on my dashboard. The problem is that periodically the fuel computer/trip reader keeps re setting itself to zero mid journey. Without me touching the fuel computer stalk or the instrument brinicle trip reader reset button. I wonder if anyone else is experiencing the same problem. The car has been back to my O.P.C. where it was fitted three times now. Without them being able to diagnose the fault. I must say they have been very understanding. However they say the P.C.C.M. Plus isn't linked to the instrument cluster in a way that could make the fuel computer/trip reader zero itself. Whilst I'm on. Would I be right in saying that only cars that had a previously factory fitted P.C.M. 1 or 2 unit continue to get the secondary direction arrow/distance to junction display on the cars instrument cluster with a P.C.C.M. Plus unit fitted. My car had the single DIN CDR-22 CD Radio. I don't get the secondary information on my instrument cluster. I'm presuming this is correct and I won't ever be able to have the secondary information. Lastly. Someone mentioned a dongle to be able to connect the mobile phone wirelessly. I presume this will work with an Android Phone. Thanks Phil

POST 147Original post

The dongles are specific to Apple CarPlay, sorry to be the bearer of bad news

POST 148Original post

I finally had mine fitted yesterday so will report back on operation in a few weeks. Only issue I ran in to ("only") is the recommended fitters (recommended by a great Porsche specialist near me) couldn't get the DAB reception to work very well. Said it might be a faulty DAB/FM splitter and I should speak to Porsche?? Anyone else run into any issues with the DAB reception on the PCCM+ unit? My car is a 2004 C4S with Bose. To be honest I've never bothered with DAB before even in my modern cars I never use it, but it would be a shame to know it doesn't work properly on a brand new unit. (I have the wireless dongle for Apple CarPlay on order from the states right now so will post about that here as well when it arrives).

POST 149Original post

I have a C4S installed the PCCM+ myself and have perfect DAB reception. I think the issue you may have is the antenna amp. A lot of installers skip this step from what I've seen, either they don't have the original Porsche installation instruction which details what all the little bypass cables are for or they are just too lazy as the DAB will sort of work well enough for a demo without fitting the cables. In the kit you have a few cables designed to be fitted to bypass the original antenna systems in the car and which ones you need depends on if your car originally had a CDR radio where it bypasses the factory antenna amplifier (found in the driver A pillar) or if you had a PCM where it bypasses the factory antenna amplifier and diversity module, since PCM equipped cars have two antenna's. Additional risk of them doing this is you are feeding an already amplified antenna signal into another amplifier which can damage your radio circuit but hopefully that hasn't happed. The reason you get bad DAB reception is because you factory antenna amplifier is designed to amplify FM and AM frequencies and attenuate everything else, which includes DAB frequencies. You essentially have a device blocking DAB on your antenna making it very had for your radio to derive a signal and the kit has the cable to bypass this device and the box that comes with the Radio is the new amplifier which separates and amplifies AM/FM and DAB. So far I've seen so many of these installs bodged by people that claim to be professionals but just assume the kit will go in like any other aftermarket radio designed to work around a cars existing systems, but Porsche have had this designed to be essentially a factory replacement for the original radio and as such talking to the car on the CANbus and bypasses existing systems the car no longer need rather than working around them. Most aftermarket DAB radio's just make you install a second stick on antenna for DAB to your windshield but this modifies the existing antenna system to not need such methods.

POST 150Original post

Thanks for the super detailed answer! Really helpful. I will talk to the installers and find out what they did. Much appreciated. Will report back when I get to the bottom of it.

POST 151Original post

Hi, I’m not great with mk1 electrics cars and I’m sorry to say your OPC or at least in my experience have no clue if your car is more than 1 generation old but I may have some ideas. First, there’s a few hidden menu’s on the PCCM, all can be obtained by going to your settings and holding the category for 10 seconds But you will need to check each one. You will want to disable anything CANbus related. I think a CDR22 has no CAN bus connector either way so this shouldn’t effect you only the PCM1 had it to sync the trip computer but easier to check without booking back in the OPC. Second, in my mind more likely. Cars with MK2 electrics I.e had a CDR23 or PCM 2.0 can have navigation directions on the instrument cluster as the later cars have a completely redesigned instrument cluster with a dot matrix centre screen and a rare PCM 2.0 without the telephone function was available as a tequipment retrofit from the OPC so navi directions could be turned on to get directions on a CDR23 car retrofitted with a PCM2. However the guy who did your installation may have got confused and think a CDR22 and CD23 in a 996 must be basically the same thing so turn on the OBC to PCM communication setting on the computer like you would do on a CDR23 car so they get PCCM navigation which then has your car trying to sync its trip computer with a PCM1, of course the new radio doesn’t communicate with the trip computer and the OBC is put in an error state, resets and tried to establish communication again Which would explain your issue. In regards to the wireless boxes, some are for CarPlay for iPhones, some for Android Auto for Android phones, you will need the correct box for the phone you are using.

POST 152Original post

Following the advice earlier in this thread I ordered a CPLAY2air which arrived today. Easily fitted and improves the convenience of the whole package. Would heartily recommend.

POST 153Original post

Mine arrived today as well. Works like a dream! Connects the minute the key turns. Can highly recommend

POST 154Original post

I am glad everyone is liking the wireless device it's a shame Porsche couldn't have thought of supplying one with the radio, nothing more annoying than getting out the car walking somewhere and then realising the phones still in the car attached to its umbilical cord. Merry Christmas and a happy new tier everyone!

POST 155Original post

The additional benefit of the CPLAY2 air is that it has allowed me to relocate the connection box so that it can’t be seen. I bought a new OEM cubby hole/ shelf and have put a wireless charger in it instead of the connection box. I bought an ANKER wireless charger as it was quite slim and also dark colour so blends in very well. Power runs off the CPLAY2air which has a power out USB slot. I connected a very short USB lead which now passes through a newly created hole on one side at the back of the cubby hole. The connection box is now hidden behind the cubby hole, and held in place with Velcro to stop it rattling. Ditto the CPLAY2air. The reason for the new cubby hole fitment is that I had cut a hole in the back of the previous one to allow the connection box to be pulled forward. See my earlier posts.

POST 156Original post

Good evening I've just upgraded my 996C4 to a C4s Cab which has the original Unit with sat nav I'm thinking of adding a Bluetooth adapter which I think will facilitate music and telephone access or Replacing with a new unit with carplay etc Can anyoine recommend a good value unit if i go the latter route Many thanks Tymawr

POST 157Original post

I've got one for my PCCM but I can't seem to load the dongle software onto the unit... how did you manage it?

POST 158Original post

I don't recall having to load any software onto the PCCM+ unit. Was "plug and play" as far as I can remember.

POST 159Original post

I'm getting it fitted in my 996 this week - I'll let everyone know how it goes..

POST 160Original post

You won't regret it! Is an essential upgrade in my view. Next up for me is a full suspension overhaul... [ ]

POST 161Original post

It's now in and even after initial inspection I agree completely - it's like it was meant to be there...

POST 163Original post

I recently fitted my PCCM Plus (bought from my local OPC with a 10% discount with my PCGB card - very happy!). I found the installation pretty straightforward although it took a good few hours as there was lots to it and a few fiddly bits, threading cables behind the dash and a few scuffed knuckles as a result! Reading the various discussion threads online (including this one) in advance was a real help. Really pleased with the look and feel of it. While it lacks some features compared to Pioneer, Kenwood and Alpine the fit, look and feel is so much better in my opinion. Delighted not to have an ugly DAB aerial stuck to my windscreen any more - it’s now connected to the factory aerial in the windscreen. One issue I came up against - which I’m hoping someone here can help me with - was fitting the USB/Aux/Phone socket box in the glovebox (my preference over mounting it below the unit in the cubby hole): I’ve read (either here or 911UK) that this is possible and there‘s a hole in the glovebox you can use to thread the cables through to the back of the head unit. I couldn’t find this hole for the life of me and after half an hour of trying in vain to thread the wires through I gave up! Am wondering if some facelift 996s have a different glovebox to others? That doesn’t sound logical to me but mine definitely doesn’t have the hole behind the glovebox light that I’ve seen pictured before. Mine is a 2003 Targa (MOST non-Bose). Does anyone have any ideas/inspiration? I otherwise might have to drill a hole (!) in the roof of the glovebox or mount the USB box somewhere else. Many thanks in advance

POST 164Original post

Where are you based, I’m in Maidenhead. I could show you my installation which I did last year my car is a 2003my.

POST 165Original post

That would be great, thanks. I’m not too far from you in North Surrey - near J10 of the M25. perhaps we could meet halfway somewhere?

POST 166Original post

Ps this is the hole referred to on another forum. Car in question is a C4S. Unless I’m going blind/crazy I definitely don’t have this hole in my glovebox!

POST 167Original post

Haha, thats my car, my picture I posted on 911uk. But yeah, strange if you don’t have the hole. Both my C4S and Boxster had that same hole so shouldn‘t matter the variant of 996 and seen plenty other installs with it. what year is your car? both mine are 2004, and yours looks to be the later interior horseshoe so must be 2002 or newer, perhaps the dash changed slightly at some point. There’s nothing crucial behind it if as a last resort you could always drill a hole.

POST 168Original post

Thank you for your reply. I’ve read the majority of your posts on 911UK (and also here) and they’ve been really useful in helping me fit this unit (particularly the aerial connection on the A pillar) so thank you for that also My car is a 2003 (03) model and used to have a single DIN CDR23 unit (so MOST but non-Bose). I might be going crazy but I couldn’t see the hole. I can see where the hole would go though and how it would work. I’ll have another look when I get time and perhaps post a pic. Drilling a hole might be the only answer if I want this box in the glovebox. Thanks again.

POST 169Original post

Just checked the glovebox again (for my own sanity!): no hole. Maybe some 996s had a hole depending on their options or possibly a previous owner has had the hole drilled for something like a Dension or aftermarket head unit? Or maybe they forgot to include the hole in mine?!

POST 170Original post

Maybe, perhaps Porsche may have had an aux or iPod kit in the making that they never got to release but had the hole on some car in preparation. Like I mentioned same hole in the same place on my 2004 C4S and Boxster so don’t think it’s aftermarket drilled hole since it was identical in both cars and I have the OEM install instructions for the PCCM+ which references putting the box in the glove box.

POST 171Original post

i bought a carplay2air for use with my PCCM+ and it bricked itself during the setup process the seller now wants me to pay to return to china ! any alternatives for a wireless link which actually work ?

POST 172Original post

That’s interesting. I am in the same boat as you. PCCM Plus works fine in normal (nothing connected) and wired CarPlay modes but when I use CPlay2Air it keeps crashing, resetting etc. When I googled this I found a few threads saying CPlay2Air is a rubbish product and sending it back to China is a nightmare Perhaps explains why these pop up on eBay every so often... :-/ Out of interest, did you have the same issue as me or something different? Apparently if there are other phones in the car with Bluetooth on or your iPhone is paired with other Bluetooth devices this can cause the CPlay2Air to play up. If I find anything that is a robust alternative (and does not need posting back to China at my own expense if faulty) I will let you know.

POST 173Original post

my dongle just bricked itself during setup - totally dead

POST 174Original post

Thanks again BatKing. I found the Porsche instructions too which, as you know, show a picture of the cables going in the the same corner of the glovebox. I reckon I wasted a good half an hour trying to find the elusive hole! Am wondering if the hole is something they included on later (53 plate onwards) 996s and/or those with PCM and/or Bose? Is your Boxster a later model and did/does it have PCM? I think I am going to have to take a drill very gently to the roof of the glovebox. Either that or find a friendly Porsche or indie tech who can opine...

POST 175Original post

One other question for you BatKing (as you seem like the authority on the PCCM Plus!) is on mounting the GPS sensor: I mounted mine under the plastic alarm sensor cover as pictured but now the cover sits proud of it when I put it back on. This might be because the front plastic ‘teeth’ of the plastic cover have snapped/sheared (probably caused by a previous cackhanded double DIN installation*) so it cant latch down on the plastic pins underneath? I’ve ordered a replacement cover but wondered if you’d had the same issue and if I’ve mounted the GPS module in the right place? I know a few others (including DeMort) have mounted it under the bonnet but I didn’t like that option. Any thoughts much appreciated as always. Thanks * I didn‘t do the previous double DIN installation - I entrusted the work on recommendation to a well known AV specialist in London (the initials of the company are the same as a well known breakdown company and club for recovering boozers). I had to go back twice to get it done properly and even then I wasn’t hugely impressed. Perhaps they were too busy focusing on all the high end cars they get in and not my humble 996?!

POST 176Original post

Seems to be a year thing, my Boxster originally came with a PCM2.0 my C4S came with the single DIN CDR23, both cars BOSE and both the same year 2004, so last year of production for both cars. so doesn't seem stereo options are relevant. your GPS antenna is back to front the cable feeds dow at the front, please see the picture attached, I managed to do the same and break those little teeth out on one side of mine but still stays down fine. though rather than replace you could always fit a double sided foam sticky pad to the top of the antenna, that would hold how the cover securely and not to evil should you ever need to take it back off. Can't say I've been impressed by many PCCM installations I've seen by supposed specialists, Porsche designed the system to fit like a factory radio and involves a fair bit of cable routing and trim disassembly to get it the way it should be so imagine the guys are so used to simple plug in surround bezel and a adapter cable to install most aftermarket radio they are probably quite shaken to see they may have to put in a fair bit of work to get this in the way it's meant and try to cut corners to save a lengthy install when they already quoted a certain number of hours. So far seen a respected Porsche specialist who didn't assemble the cage at all so the first time the owner hit the brakes the radio came flying straight out and smashed the screen on the gearstick, plenty with no antenna amplifier bypass installed resulting in no DAB and most shocking of all an OPC that installed a cheap stick on windshield DAB antenna as it seems they broke the delicate ribbon cable during install that connects the the windshield antenna and thought this was the more appropriate action than explain to the customer that their mistake would ideally result in a windshield out job to repair if not a new Porsche windshield.

POST 177Original post

Good afternoon, Could you add a photo with the whole glove box please and how the box/wiring sits inside it please when you have a moment? Many thanks, Tim

POST 178Original post

So the glove box hole is perhaps a 2004 (53 model onwards) thing then? Or maybe I have a very ‘special’ glovebox haha Thank you for the advice re the GPS module. Turning it around the other way makes a lot of sense now you mention it - I think I put it the way it is as you will see there is a notch cut out in the plastic to the right of it (next to the alarm sensor) probably from the previous install (a Pioneer AVIC double DIN). Yes, there have been some stories about specialists fitting these haven’t there? That’s one of the reasons for fitting mine myself (also not having to cut/splice wires appeals!). I remember seeing that video of the fitter forcing the head unit into the dash (of the black C4S) - was that the one that fell out and smashed? Awful for whoever it was Also awful is the stick on DAB aerial (I hate those things with a passion!) hopefully the OPC in question fixed or replaced the windscreen in the end?![strike] [/strike] PS. One more Q for you: On your Bose equipped car, do you get the Graphic Equaliser in the Sound menu or do you just get Bass and Treble controls like I do? The manual does state some cars don’t get the equaliser - I’m assuming it’s the MOST cars using the amp and those using the internal amp get the extra bells and whistles here. Am tempted to upgrade the amp and dash speakers at some point but that’s something for another time...

POST 179Original post

Hi Tim If you scroll up the page a bit you’ll see pictures of the inside of a glovebox with a light on - look at the first one as this shows a hole behind the light that the two wires from the ‘media module/USB box’ can be threaded through. The other side of this hole is the void behind the removed head unit, drinks holder and central air vent. You can then attach these two wires to the back of the PCCM+ as you slide it in. I don’t have this hole in my glovebox annoyingly so am thinking about drilling one.

POST 180Original post

Here is a pic of the ‘void‘ I wrote about above. I would think the cables from the glove box would come out from the direction of the arrow, ie behind the metal frame in the left hand corner. BatKing can confirm of course

POST 181Original post

Thank you. I had seen the picture with the hole and the wire. I was interested if anyone had a picture showing the whole of the glove box with the box and wires in it, as I wanted to see how much room it took up please? Many thanks, Tim

POST 182Original post

Here you go... Not much (in my opinion) You also need to factor in cables of anything you plug into the box of course

POST 183Original post

Just Treble and Bass on MOST equipped cars, the graphic equaliser is only present on pre-MOST(no fibre optic) cars. If the sound isn't to your liking overall it is isn't too difficult to adjust the graphic equaliser, it's still there but hidden and a bit of a pain to get to in the android layer of the stereo (see my video below and it's in the app "car settings"). Personally I'm happy with how it sounds as it came so left it alone but does seem to work and remember the values you put in. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQO_smQNB6Q One other thing, do check your navigation display on the instrument cluster displays correctly, early models show the value for km's for miles so your head unit will say 5 miles to your next turn and you instrument cluster will tell you 8 miles. I raised this with Porsche and they sent me a SD card with an update file on it which fixes the issue, I assume newer PCCM+'s are delivered with the updated software and anyone without a MOST car or didn't get the TOMTOM maps will not notice since their cluster doesn't display direction so only affects a small number of us but can upload the update file as have been meaning to for a bit now or Porsche can be messaged for them to send the update but it's a lot of emailing back and fourth. All you need to do is drop the files in an SD card and plug it in the stereo and it offers you to update. And correct on that last post, that is where the cables come out, you need to pull the cable through till the box it up to the hole so you have plenty of length to plug it in the back of the stereo then you can pull it back down when the stereo is put in place.

POST 185Original post

Just newer pic shows how much space it takes up with a phone in there and safety vests. it's pretty compact and the lead being flexible means nothing really you can't get in there that you could before.

POST 186Original post

Thank you for confirming what I thought re the MOST/non MOST cars and the sound settings. Thanks also for the link on how to get into the operating system. Like you I think the sound is great, although it would be interesting to play around with it to see what impact it has, particularly on the mid range. As I had a CDR23 before this, I need to get the dash screen coded by a specialist with a Durametric so I can get the satnav guidance on it. Once done I will let you know if the distances show in actual miles or kms showing as miles (Ive read your posts on that issue before): hopefully its been sorted by now...

POST 188Original post

Thank you for posting the photo. I like the option of putting it in the glove box. Tim

POST 189Original post

Just wanted to give an update on my PCCM Plus and some information that may be of use to some with the same unit. It definitely doesn’t like me using the CPlay2Air - it initially works fine; connects OK and works as if I had plugged my iPhone in using the lightning cable, however within a couple of minutes the screen freezes, then after that the unit switches off and restarts. This has only happened when I’ve had the CPlay2Air plugged in but might be a coincidence I suppose. The other thing I’ve noticed is that it reset my trip computer (mpg, mileage and avg speed). I’ve read on another forum that someone else has had this issue - the PCCM Plus does ‘talk’ to the car, as you can synch the GPS to the clock (and probably a few other things). I’m wondering whether this reset has been caused by the CPlay2Air glitch above or is something else. As mentioned before, I plan to get an OPC or specialist to code my PCCM to my dashboard display so maps can be shown in addition to mpg, radio station etc. This may resolve the above.

POST 190Original post

Hi, sorry to resurrect this thread but I’ve been installing my new PCCM+ unit in my 986 Boxster S (with cdr23 originally). Could I ask about the antenna bypass in the A pillar please? I can’t seem to find any cable in the pack to do this, but see a note about obtaining a separate cable for the task? DAB is working with the original antenna lead plugged in but it’s not great so assume it’s because this (the bypass) hasn’t been done. Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!

POST 191Original post

That's correct, the original amplifier attenuates the DAB frequencies as it was designed to amplify AM and FM only. You should have received a very long cable in the box unless the contents have changed since I bought mine shortly after release last year. Essentially there should be a very long cable with a Fakra connector like the original connector for the antenna to the back of the radio and a connector on the other end with a ring terminal to ground. the ring terminal connects to either point the original amplified screwed the the A pillar with and the connector goes to the input cable to the amplifier and routed to the back of the radio. https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2020/MC-10179274-0001.pdf Here's the Porsche instructions that shows you the kit

POST 192Original post

Hi, thank you, I do have that cable but the connector at the end with the ring crimp doesn’t seem to push into anything at the A pillar, hence my confusion. It has a round plastic shroud with 2 ’lugs’. The connectors on the car have square plastic shrouds, adding to my confusion

POST 193Original post

Ah, just saw you have a Boxster S, I'm guessing a late one.

POST 194Original post

Thank you. I think I was looking for confirmation of something I already guessed/assumed . I think looking at the instructions there must be a short adaptor/cable to fit between the factory antenna from the glass & the long lead included in the kit. I‘lol speak to my OPC about it in the morning to ask. Thanks for taking the time to assist!

On another note, for some reason I’m only getting sound from the 2 speakers on the dash, and nothing from the door speakers. These have Bose badges on them if that makes a difference? Does anyone have any ideas as to what I could try wiring wise please?

POST 196Original post

If you have a late car with BOSE you should have audio through the Fibre optic link through the adapter box included with the kit so it's a digital signal rather than lines for each speaker so nothing in wiring should need changing to make any difference. First makes sure all your connections are secure. check you have bypassed the CD changer with the link in the kit. Steps 5.4 and 5.5.1. Also just go through the sound settings incase anything obvious is switched off or balance is adjusted strongly ect. With my C4S which has Bose it was plug and play.

Wanted to say a quick thank you You we’re correct, I do need the additional adaptor/lead to go between the long supplied lead & the windscreen connector. I tested it by using some cores from a 6mm stranded single wedged in & taped to confirm. The lead needs to be ordered (at a cost of £21!!), which I’m a little disappointed with considering the outlay on the unit & nav card. Overall my OPC was good enough to give a good discount on the pccm+, the sd card & the aircon trim panel which even with the additional lead means I’m still up on the deal I’m very pleased with the unit & although quite different to ‘normal’ head units to install, feel it’s good quality & suits the car so well. Expensive but worth it!

Castorman, Thank you for the post. I have just booked my car in to be fitted with the new PCM Plus. Could you please share some photos on where you have put the box including the wireless charging set-up and the cubby hole? many thanks, Tim

POST 200Original post

I have my 996 in today having the new PCCM plus fitted by Porsche. Does anyone know what the latest SW version is on the PCCM that has the bug fixes (for the KM/MPH and freezing problems) please? Also how you check the SW version in the new PCCM please (not got my car back yet from the centre but should be ready today)?

POST 201Original post

Good morning all, I have just collected my 2004 996 back from Porsche yesterday evening with the new PCCM Plus and first impression is good. Thank you for the help and advice to date. A couple of questions if I may please? - The satnav directions previously showed up in the instrument cluster on my old pcm (it was the last version of the PCM and I had the OBC on my 2004 996); am I right to think the directions should still show up on the instrument cluster please as I cannot see the directions currently? - My maps SD card has 01.01.2021 on the sticker on the outer case and the SD card itself inside the outer case has 02.2019 on it; does anyone know what the latest version is please? - Does anyone know what the latest SW version is on the PCCM that has the bug fixes (for the KM/MPH and freezing problems) please? Also how do you check the SW version in the new PCCM please? Many thanks for any help and guidance. Tim

Hi All, I'm a bit late to this thread but was wondering how long it takes to install the new PCCM+. Porsche Classic are selling the unit at £1,390.01 and I understand PCGB members can get 10 % discount, whilst my local dealer Guildford advise £2,084.93 fitted. So that must mean over £800 of labour to install, which seems a particularly long time. thanks Richard

POST 203Original post

I think they plan on about 5-6 hours of labour to fit.

POST 204Original post

Took me about half a day. I'd avoid getting anyone but yourself to install it, labour seems a lot till you see what dealers are charging per hour results in them essentially rushing the job, so far I've had to help a lot of users both here and on 911UK correct botched installs by OPC's and reputable indies just due to laziness and rushing and not following the very detailed and following simple step by step instructions (can provide if you PM me). Everything you need to install is in the kit if you originally had a PCM and you just need a couple extra bits (UNDER £70) if you originally had a CDR22 or 23. It's ironically a really simple kit to install and made to be plug and play like a factory radio, most of your time will just be routing the cables for the GPS, microphone, multimedia box and antenna cables (if you had a PCM you can use the existing GPS antenna) and it's this which gets rushed where I have seen installers put the microphone in odd locations or leave it out to use the head units built in one to avoid the little work it takes to fit it on the steering column, skipping or incorrectly fitting the original antenna amplifier bypass resulting in almost non functional DAB or not understanding how to set the radio up so some users were left manually turning the radio on and off.

I have now collected my 2004 996 with the new PCCM+ unit installed by my local dealership. I have to say that I really like the look and sound of the new unit. It has really brought the connectivity of the car up to date. After some great advice on this thread, I went for putting the white connectivity box out of sight behind the cubby hole. I also went for a wireless charger to sit in the cubby hole and a wireless Bluetooth adapter. It is very slick to just put the phone on the wireless charger and it connects automatically, without the need to plug the phone in. My thanks again for the help and support here. Very pleased with the outcome. Tim

Hi, Autosounds have just fitted a Pioneer double din unit to my 996, android, apple car play, bluetooth and usb connection,£520.00 fitted, could not be happier...transforms my 996, they also do a cruise control unit, my next purchase, might have to reduce my beer consumption to pay for it lol

POST 207Original post

Hi Steve, Can you post a pic of the Pioneer unit in place please? JK

POST 211Original post

2 options; 1. If the original car has a wired Apple carplay, if you want to expand the application, you need to buy a conversion box (“carplay smart box”) to replace the wired carplay with wireless carplay and wireless android auto. U disk playback, Bluetooth phone, Android/Apple phone screen projection, setting options) The higher price is the open Android 11.0 version, you can freely choose to download youtube wazz spolify facebook map software, casual games, etc. in the Google store. 2: Before 2016, the original car without carplay needs to install a carplay module or replace the host and screen as a whole

POST 212Original post

hi all, I can’t get dab to work? any tips? mine has pcm2 and 996.647.118.00 antenna on the drivers a piller and I can’t see how to unplug to use with any of the other cables or find where to fit the bypass blue ends cable.

POST 213Original post

am sorry to say I can't help you, mine was fitted by autosounds, but if you were to take it to a garage that fits them, as you have already installed it, I would not think it would cost much to find the fault, maybe it needs a converter of some sort?

POST 214Original post

So this is a long shot - given how old this post is. But I can see you replaced a PCM1 with PCCM+. I have just done the same. I was wondering, where did you put your DAB receiver? The leads that came with mine were rather short, and so the only place I could fit the receiver was on the tray of the stereo unit. Any chance you can remember? Thanks in advance, Graham.

POST 215Original post

Quote "I replaced a PCM1 unit with the PCCM+ but it will be same for PCM2 I think. You do lose the trip computer functionality on the audio unit screen however I can still access, reset & scroll through the trip/MPG/average speed/outside temp etc on the OBC in the driver's instrument cluster in the dash. Graham Paul Taylor a professional audio fitter installed my PCCM+ He‘s a PCGB member (E Mids Region) on here so should be able to advise. May be best to reach him via Facebook? https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=748817808 Dave S
