I will admit the low mileage appealed to Me because we're supposed to buy used cars based on their condition right and this one was in good well preserved condition probably because it was such low mileage.

It never went higher and dropped back, as above went up slowly after 90k reserve met, it’s a bargain if the ceramics were still good condition after that mileage and track days, if not budget 3500 per corner, and that’s probably what the winner thought, a 38k mileage car with perfect ceramics at approx £115k after costs is probably the market price atm.

Some of these cars are covered off in other threads but given the amount of interesting stuff going through Collecting Cars I thought it would be good if anyone could offer advice, there's been a couple of cars I've been interested in buying and the advice here is pretty strong!
Will start with these two:
https://collectingcars.com/for-sale/2007-porsche-9...
What we say is a good price, is it a good buy?
And this one, bit of a 'bitsa' but any redeeming features for the money?
https://collectingcars.com/for-sale/1992-porsche-9...
I bid up to £50,500~ inc fees on the high mileage GT3, that’s my limit. Good comfort gt3’s with low miles start at 68k~ so for me the gap wasn’t worth it any smaller
Probably go mid 50’s?
Impressed with how strong the market remains...

With asking prices of non-CS RS being north of £150k, I'm surprised this one is lingering around at less than half that, albeit with 24hrs still to run. Does the lack of originality really matter so much? I'd have thought the modifications would make it more desirable as a tool to spank around a track all day.
That 964 has been used as it’s maker intended...unfortunately all the 964 RS’s that sell for £150k plus are original panel OEM spec cars...and original paint too if you want to get close to £200k for them.
Without it’s matching numbers engine, magnesium cup wheels etc it’s a great track car for someone and I suppose it’s up against more modern GT3’s. Be interesting to see what it sells for !

Still made £117k inc commissions. Thats top money considering history/LHD but worth every penny imo.

when 997 GT3 is £70k imo it makes cars like this look very expensive.

I know of crashed ones rebuilt by 9m and others where vendors asking between 200-250k. Crazy I agree but I feel if I wanted a new car today I'd build my own and it would maybe cost me even more than this. The new stuff doesn't hold a candle to that yellow RS and its a fantastic base to do something amazing..
This will be very interesting and CC is an interesting “venue” to sell a car like this. Very original 2.7 RS which was sold my Maxted Page a couple of years ago for pretty big money....it’s been for sale for circa £750k I think so will be their most expensive sale if it goes through. Not a car to buy unless you’ve had it inspected by someone who really, really knows what they are looking at.

Koln-RS said:
It remember when the 2.7RS was hugely revered, but these days, sales seem to be a bit flat.
It’s a nice, original example, with interesting history.
But, I’m presuming but no more than £500k.
The lovely green one failed to sell at less than that a couple of weeks ago.
Chartreuse car that sold after the auction closed a couple of weeks ago was a Touring with Lightweight bits. The cars that get the best prices as per any Porsche are the ones that are as they left the factory...even more so with an RS.
I think this car will get bid to a lot more than £500k whether it sells is another matter.

It sold for £63.5 + fees back in June, so perhaps a couple Ks less? 997s prices all over the place so could be anything.

Or quite a bit more it’s got a full Porsche warranty on it now, didn’t have that back in June.

It was over bid last time, but now has had £6k work, so time will tell I guess in 9 hours.

As I said in 9 hours will will see, it's harder to call as it now has had a £6k spend on the car which boosts confidence in the car also being though an OPC.
The car stands the seller at £73,200.
So to answer your question , yes it was over bid on and the seller won't get his money back imho, one sale don't make the market.
I will be happy to carry on the chat when we see the sale price tonight and it will be interesting your aggressive "to me" take on it then.
shantybeater said:

cannot call it, won't be shocked at £59k won't be shocked at £66k.
personal value £62k.
all plus fee's
the last GT3 sold for £51k a comfort with 60k miles.

Don't imagine the seller will expect his money back, he's had a ball owning a legend and will expect to pay for that.
I'll go previous hammer price plus half of the spend mentioned in the ad (plus the CC fee on top of course)

he's done 2k miles in a Covid 2020 where no events are on and travel is all but banned if £10k for that use is having a ball I am missing out ;-)
so you are going £66.5k plus fee's then.

So is there a limit to the number of 'extra times' then. The last extra time it just flashed red for the whole two minutes - was like watching a Mission Impossible bomb detonator countdown scene.
Close guesses!
so £68,116 after fees.
Not sure what that makes of the 60,000 miler comfort at £54,060, or the 160,000 miler CS at £50,880

£51,145 for the 160
However, I love it, unashamedly used, will be used some more and I don't have to worry about miles or stone chips...
Fantastic thing, dry as a bone underneath, maintained by Fearnsport expertly and a very nicely sorted car...
Couldn't be happier!
Suspect I'll add a LWFW at some point and maybe PASM DSC but thats so far it.. doesn't want for anything.

My long term plan was to build a 996 or 997 in a faint nod to Club Sport-ish spec for road and track, primarily as I don't have the c.£70k to put into a GT3. I'll have to start with a well used Carrera and build it in up stages. I reckon could get a car that goes, stops and steers well enough to be considered good value at £40k all in. The thing is, such a car will only ever be worth market value for a standard car though, possibly even less given the limited market for it.
When I look at the the CC car going for £55k, the extra outlay over a built C2S seems like an absolute no brainer. A 997 GT3 for that money is an undeniable bargain, even at higher than average mileage and 'sofa spec'. I can't think of a better car for the money, new or used. Here's hoping they're finding a new normal in terms of market pricing. Just need to find enough coins lying around to fund one!

Glad you said that, I suppose I better own up...today was a good day.
Very similar thinking to you, loved my 996T, kept it over 8 years and when it went I realised just how to close to the ideal car it was for me. Something slightly more focused was the icing on the cake.

Same car, was up for £55,000 on PistonHeads at first (after CC auction selling for £53,000 inc fees)... Odd how it's jumped another 10!
Look at the Ferrari 458 Italia currently being auctioned ... almost on the death a claimed pervious owner comes along and disses the car ?
To be honest, if it were my car I'd be really pissed.
And there seems to be is no way of corroborating the claim ??
Should they stop the auction ?

I don't quite follow. Where did the previous owner start dissing? Is there a comments section while people are bidding? I went for a snoop but couldn't see any comments.

Well it either couldn’t have sold or it’s been pulled as it isn’t in the sold section. People can post questions during the auction for CC or the owner to respond to.

A guy came on and claimed to be a previous owner in 2013. He said that the car was still exhibiting some damage from where someone crashed into him. The seller claimed this was nonsense but the auction virtually died there. The owner claimed this was a guy that tried to buy the car pre-auction and had a grudge because he wouldn't sell it to him.
I think.

They are dreaming if they think they can make that mark up on it.
This one is £6k less, with the bucket seats and only 1k more miles....(subjectively) a nicer colour, and from comparison of the pics way better condition than the CC's one.

Thanks ... I didn't see the end of the auction and then it disappeared ... neither sold nor listed ...
It's interesting watching the bids at the bottom of the listing, anybody allowed to bid can ask questions.

Fabulous in the showroom or after detailing, but a pain to keep nice if you are obsessive.

They havent even taken any of their own photos, or written their own blurb! I am not sure they appreciate how painfully obvious it is
I (and I'm sure, the rest of us) appreciate that as a business they took the risk on the auction, and are within their rights to make money. But at least
pretend
to have put some effort in yourself!

Yes not a Porsche though, very slick operation, modest charge for pro photographs (paid to the photographer direct so CC not trying to make a margin) several calls during the later part of the auction from CC, slightly under reserve (lifted at my choice) but result more than satisfactory.
Very simple transaction for me. Couldn't fault the CC people. Had some long discussion about the reserve which I set higher than their starting point. The price for mine was ok, although I was perhaps a tad disappointed. But if it had been 2k higher I would have been delighted. So I decided that given the ease of selling it was all in all a great thing to do. No regrets!

Thanks for your feedback guys. Great to hear respected members here having positive reports. The likes of Bonhams and Sotheby's are well established. Do you know if CC have any kind of global reach?
I suspect they do with the affiliation with Chris Harris and they have had cars from the Middle East and Europe - albeit from the supercar thread their is some dubious service history on some of these vehicles.
Also noticed that they launched an Australia site to presumably tempt the Aussies to import desirable UK cars:

996 CSR by RPM Technik, currently at £26k, no reserve.
I'd have thought spending £27k on the CSR conversion would get you an engine rebuild but it seems not. That's a lot of money for an aero kit, Fuchs and some bolt on suspension parts.

The description makes it look one for the brave- ‘oil leaks but they don’t merit rectification because the engine pulls strongly’- !!??
No service book.
Odometer not working
Already at £45,000 with 17hrs left
Looks interesting. If it were a C2 I’d be interested in that. I think that the C4 is an under rated car but I would always default to a C2 for my requirements dynamically and for weight saving

Very normal for 964's to leak a bit of oil if they've not had a rebuild. There's a number of places oil can be found, without meaning there's an engine issue.

The car looksnice steve, hard part now is finding a good chassis donnor,Singer to blame for that, the 4 wheel drive can always be put on the shelf, just need to find a gearbox, great colour.Parts could be sold off, engine to be rebuilt any way.Put a lwt loom in.
I have a genuine Numbered 993rs gearbox available !
Just seen it has a sunroof,
The vendor on the 964 looks to be preventing a bidder from inspecting in person given C19 restrictions which is understandable - It's a brave shout to buy such a car with limited history unseen/without a decent inspection IMO.

6 years back I bought a 964 carrera 2 that had some minor oil leaks - although not indicative of a major issue they constantly did my head in and at the time I couldn’t justify the expense of an engine out rebuild.
I suppose it depends on what the hammer price is regarding if this car is worth the potential costs involved- still at 45k with less than an hour to go.

CAUTION, contains pure Porsche pawn.
1 owner from new by looks of it, all original, best colour... this one is going to drum up some interest and discussion, and no doubt go pretty high!
Yes that’s a car well known in these parts. Saw it at the Caffeine and Machine meet about this time last year and was lucky enough to go for a passenger ride in it. Condition is incredible for a car of that mileage....mad to sell it in my opinion ! If I hadn’t just bought an air cooled RS of my own I’d be on the case.

Surprising to see that Panamera Turbo S go for £40k last night. It was very basic spec, 3 different brands of tyre, incomplete service history and a pretty undesirable colour / wheel combo. The mileage was pretty low in fairness, circa 27k miles for a 2015 car. Similarly aged / mileage cars with much better spec and FPSH on AT have sticker prices of mid £40k.

Just reads like a car that's not been looked after properly. Don't understand why you'd buy a Turbo S and not do something basic like running the right tyres. Well I do...because you don't want to spend the money.
Barge pole !

Weirdly, it was being offered by a trader rather than private sale. I’m amazed bidders weren’t deterred....lockdown boredom perhaps.

Not doubting what you say but its looks are not for me at all, i guess i’m quite cliche in my tastes toward the 911 and i’d want something vibrant like viper green or the yellow they do, silver looks cool to against the vents etc but black cars i’m not a fan of personally, even more so with contrasting red decals etc, just jarres with me but this is purely subjective, i certainly wouldn't say no to a modded 911, as long as the tuning checks out..
The tuning possibilities of the 997 GT2 pulls at different heart strings to the ‘must try 911’ ones, what sort of safe power can you get from these? normally its gearbox restrictions..
Unless they put it through a hedge backwards, I can’t imagine anyone saying “I wish I never bought that GT2” on their deathbed.
As I said, unless it was the GT2 that put them in their deathbed itself

There are quite a few Mezger engined cars running quite high power numbers. Ruf and 9ff come to mind in Germany. There is somebody on here who runs a silver GT2 with c 800 hp from memory and somebody else who had a Turbo with quite high power (and GT2 aero on it), his was done by somebody in the UK.

It also has the LED daylight running lights from a 997.2. Maybe the owner wanted a 997.1 wheel ? Original might have been red with that interior. Not sure whether the wheel colour follows dash top or the rest of the interior. Red looks god awful though IMHO !
Early 997.2 were delivered in 2008 and if they had a non-sport wheel, they had that triangular wheel from the 997.1. The 997.1 sport wheel was also fitted to early 997.2 if that option was ticked. This applies only to manual cars. PDK cars got the updated wheel design, though obviously with shift buttons.
Here's a press image from the launch of the 997.2 with the triangular wheel:

Car is Italian supplied to UK specification, C16, not UK Dealer allocation. In Europe back then, you see a lot of EU dealers supplying RHD to C16 UK specification, not UK supplied. Military personnel did this a lot. Just send an email to Porsche Reading to find out supplying dealer country allocation. Then check with your insurance they don’t class it as an import. Good luck.

Sadly, it has plastic door cards and dash. All UK cars got exgtended leather. Great pity given it's otherwise very nice to see a low mile 996.2.

This same car was for sale on Autotrader during the summer for £114k and I made a genuine and serious enquiry. Unfortunately, the seller, the same guy selling it on CC (and a trader NOT a private seller as claimed) was very evasive and unknowledgeable about these cars.
I was instantly put off and now I’m not surprised by the photos from Coparts.

I don't see any mention of Cat X or a dodgy VIN on the CC advert, I'd be quite unhappy if I'd bought that and IMO it's definitely not properly described and I'd be seeking to get my money back.

I kept a close eye on it and didn’t see any bids withdrawn. The reserve had been met by £90k and, from what I saw, the bidding increased slowly and incrementally from there. It would have been strange for anyone to have ‘outbid’ to the degree that you thought you saw, but stranger things have happened.
In any case it looked like a bargain if the car checks out fine. The main negative thing that I saw is that the vendor didn’t upload the last OPC heath check despite being requested to do so. Apparently all four tyres needed replacing and it required an aircon regas and the drain holes clearing.
Yep, it s market price. 2 OPC cars with 2 years warranty and higher mileage and ceramics.

The seller of this is described as ‘private’ but having bought/sold over 10 times through the platform along with the description ‘conveniently’ not mentioning how long he’s owned it suggests to me it’s a flipper. And a very good earner it appears. They’re good cars but they’re not worth £250k. But clearly some people think otherwise.
Spend less than half, drive it and enjoy it would be the ideal.
Absolutely insane price expectation. I saw it bid up to @ £235k with 90 minutes remaining and the reserve hadn’t been met! There appeared to be 3 competing bidders.
It’s certainly very bizarre.
The ‘perceived’ value can only be in the low mileage - but that’s a double-edged sword.
May have under-use issues and, use it and you erode the huge premium paid.
Don’t use it, and keep it as a ‘collectible’……… but they’re not actually
that
collectible to justify the huge premium.
My best guess is that someone is playing games.
They’ve set a massive reserve and there is some coordinated bidding amongst a few connected parties, protected up to the reserve.
All they then hope for is that some innocent party is drawn into the bidding, naively believing it’s trending at the right value.
I was suspicious when it started hitting crazy money earlier in the sale. Genuine buyers don’t normally show their hand until the last few minutes.
And, mileage aside, it’s not a particularly special spec. I’ve seen nicer 993Ss - better colour combos and the correct sports seats.

I dunno. It depends on how many there are with that kind of mileage. This one might not be quite low enough to justify a huge premium. But let's say it had 800 genuine miles, not 8,000. At that point I think it would somewhat transcend the broad collectibility status of the 993C2S and be collectible in its own right.
But of course, you're right that it would still be pretty pointless. All it's value, whether 800 or 8,000 miles, is tied up in that mileage. So, it's stopped being a car and turned into an ornament. It's no longer a car for driving. And if you did actually want to drive, a regular C2 drives better, anyway.
I see the same posts about mileage all the time on these forums.
You can still use it.
You’d imagine anyone paying that sort of money has a fairly large collection of cars, no? Let’s say they own ten cars, you can probably enjoy them all and still only do a collective few thousand miles across them all. In a good year I might do 5k recreational mules in my “toy car”. Decide that between ten or more cars and you might only put a few hundred on one particular car.
It’s not like anyone is going to be buying this as their daily driver.
If it’s sold again in a few years time with 10.5k miles on it is it really going to kill the value? I think not.
PRO5T said:

Perfect assessment and classic 993 price manipulation. I’ve seen it in the past when 993 are up for sale with ‘dealers’ at inflated prices and then appear to have ‘sold’ only to appear with another dealer several months down the line giving the impression they do sell at that price. Just try getting a px value and look at the delta between trade and retail

People don't buy and pay over the odds for a new Range Rover because of the low mileage. That's how it's different.
Of course a low mile car can be driven. But people don't buy them to drive them. They seek out low mileage specifically and pay massively over the odds for low mileage. If they drive the thing, it by definition turns into something less appealing to them. The only way to maintain the appeal that caused them to seek out and pay a huge premium for the thing is to not drive it. And very much in most cases, super low mile cars don't get driven.

somebody wanted to pay 240k for that and it did not meet reserve? People in the UK clearly have way too much money.
But did they? That's the question, especially if you know what the reserve is.
I could list a car and set a unrealistic reserve and then tell a couple of mates to bid the car up to just under the reserve in the hope it pulls someone in to bid higher. It's happened for years across many auction platforms - shill bidding. Given the high reserve, the few bidders bidding it up and it not selling to the highest bidder in my mind warrants an internal review of the auction by CC, or perhaps they're not bothered as the whole discussion and posting across various SM platforms is free advertising for them.
Today £240k is over the top for this car which does not have perfect history (there are various gaps between what should be annual servicing despite it having annual MOTs), there is no indication how long the seller has owned it and as is the platform being an 'introductory service' being sold without warranty or guarantee so there's no comeback.
To me it reads there are questions to ask before anyone decides to part with a quarter of a million quid ( eBay at £317k is ludicrous) . For example if it's not been serviced between 2006-12 and 2015-20 but has been taken for an MOT, then it's been used and those periods with the same oil despite the low annual mileage will turn purists off. In my mind I'd be wanting reassurance over the mileage given you can swap a speedo in/out in 5mins in these cars. Not that I'm suggesting anything improper with this car but emphasising the need for due diligence.
It just doesn't add up especially in the latter period when these cars started to increase in value why you wouldn't have even the basic service when you had the MOT done. Of the service receipts available it hardly inspires confidence this has been a well cared for car - fix on failure. I'd be interested to know if the AC works as we all know how much of a hassle and cost replacing the evaporator is on these.
If one of the top bidders from the previous sale ends up with it, fair enough, they see it at a price I do not.

Ha ha. Yes, they'll definitely want to do that. Sorry, not to disparage your point, but this kind of thing is standard auction fare since forever, surely?

Take your point, but shill bidding is actually illegal, violating commercial and criminal laws and there is a legal duty on the platform to ensure it doesn't happen. However there is a 'Reserve Exception' where 'false' bids under the reserve do not appear to be 'illegal'. This could explain why a ludicrous high reserve was set. Chase it up in round 1 knowing it will not sell and then offer it in round 2 hoping the furore and 'interest' in round 1 attracts someone who will then pay over the odds for it. It will be interesting to know where the reserve is now. Only one question asked, odd.
That said, round 2 we're two days from the end at £125k. Perhaps the 3-4 excited bidders throwing in bids of £200k+ are yet to show in this round, or perhaps they've suddenly lost interest

A brand new Range Rover will lose a packet in first few years but people still drive them so how is that different
So a new car isn't low mileage?
I understand it is different. One is new and one is old. All I am saying is some people aren't so concerned with maintaining value and / or maintaining this low mileage status. And I was trying to make a comparison with new cars which are expensive but people drive them knowing the value will be diminished if they add high mileage. If they only do lower mileage the car may be worth more when they're finished with it. You see?
I bought a low mileage 986 about 4 or 5 years ago. I added about 10000 miles over the 4 years I had it. So it went from 22800 miles to about 32000 - can't remember. It felt a bit wrong to Me like the car should be preserved so I had to fight the urge to 'keep it nice' and just use it like a car without low mileage. So maybe I am the exception - don't know.
I was trying to buy a nice 986 I could use and enjoy and cherish. I didn't go looking for low mileage but it did kind of just happen. I will admit the low mileage appealed to Me because we're supposed to buy used cars based on their condition right and this one was in good well preserved condition probably because it was such low mileage.
I regularly see people on here talking about keeping their car - not any car in particular - forever and never selling. I'm always sceptical because I think they're always sold eventually but I'm sure people enjoy saying they'll keep it forever even if deep down they know it's not true.
If I was really looking for a forever car which really was truly to be a forever car then I might choose a low mileage example because it is 'nicer' but the resale value really does become irrelevant if I am going to keep it forever so why should I try so hard to maintain that low mileage status unless it is just for bragging rights on an Internet forum like this one.
I understand very or brand new cars are different to old cars with low mileage but what I'm saying or trying to say is some owners aren't so concerned with maintaining low mileage in order to maintain value even though everyone here seems to treat it like some kind of holy grail.
I like to think that some people buy cars to use and that includes some of these older cars with low mileage.

Or been told it was a little obvious last time, so calm it down.
30 hours to go and the bidding is at £175,500. The current high bidder buys and sells a lot of cars via that platform and seems to be very keen on securing it!
I was looking at the 2007 Porsche 911 (997) Turbo Cabriolet that ends tomorrow as I am toying with the idea of getting another 997
What struck me was the repair / service invoices for the past 5 years
Jun 2021 – 95256 - £16,725
Jun 2021 – 95769 - £540.53
Jan 2022 – 96513 - £4,553.10
Jul 2022 – 96869 - £2,554.35
Jul 2023 – 99960 - £1,831.69
May 2024 – 102100 - £6,975.78
Aug 2024 – 102231 - £3,434.57
Dec 2024 – 102889 - £1,998.00
Oct 2025 – 104123 - £1,712.41
Aug 2026 – 104200 - £10,124.05
This totals £50,449 over just 9,000 miles.
Plus there is still a laundry list of stuff to do as reported on the last bill.
No such thing as a cheap old 911.

What were the two big bills - £16k and &10k?
All in the photos of the online listing, none of it was as major as stuff I've had done to my previous 997 & my 991.
