Hello guys
Has anyone of you experienced any burning odor coming from the air conditioning vents as soon as you start up the car?
It has occurred a couple of times to me and
I have no idea how to approach this issue.
The odor dissipates after 5 minutes or so.
Car is a Boxster 2009 model 2.9 base
PDK
Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Have you monitored your oil consumption? Often an oil leak will burn off the case it’s dripping on which could account for the eventual dissipation factor. I would begin by looking at that possibility, if possible put some white paper under the car so if you see fluid you can identify it. If you have the space and facility, get under it and look with a strong light for oil leaks.
Could you describe the odor better? Like electrical component overheating, rubber burning, plastic melting, wood (JK 😬😬)?
Does it do that even if HVAC and fan is off?
I would say it’s more of a rubber burning odor
and yes the air conditioning was off if that is what you mean
Thanks for your reply but there is no oil leak as far as I know. Car is parked indoors and there is no signs of oil leak on the pavement as I always check.
Sorry, HVAC is a common (in US) acronym for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.
You didn't say if the car was cold when you noticed the odor. I see you are from Denmark, have you been using the heat the last time you drove it? When did this problem start?
Just some ideas/guesses:
Possibly the fan motor is starting to fail. It might have trouble initially getting up to speed. Did you leave your fan on the last time you drove?
It is common in Porsches for foam insulation (on the ducting air mixing doors) to break loose. So chunks of black foam end up floating around the ducts. It could get caught somewhere in contact with heat or hanging up in the fan motor. It could eventually break loose and end up clogging the air vents.
It might be possible that fumes are being drawn in with fresh air from outside the cabin. Even from the frunk. You might want to try opening the frunk next time and seeing if you notice an odd smell.
Has your cabin air filter (also in the frunk) been changed recently?
Maybe someone has more ideas.
Thank you for your time and suggestions
Actually Iam from Greece, only for a few days in Denmark.
Car is operating in Athens Greece and yes the car was cold started with an ambient temperature of 22 degrees Celsius
I own the car since Feb 2025 and to be honest I never used heating only cooling.
I will change the cabin air filter next week and see if any difference.
Maybe it’s the fan’s motor as you said I will have to check with my mechanic and see what he thinks.
Thanks for your help
I set a personal best time record getting home on a 2 hour drive from the OCNJ Boardwalk Reunion. When I pulled in the garage it smelled like burning rubber which is common for my car and what I heard is also common on these cars. I only get the smell on the outside of the car and not through the vents.
