As far as shops go, I used Pro Technik for my SC rebuild, but they are closed.

If the engine is clean of metal debris, replace the IMS and get on with life.

What are the indications that you need to do anything to repair/modify this car?

Suggestion
Failing IMS tend to shred a lot of metal before the bearing itself starts to make noise; you cannot get this debris out of the engine without taking it completely apart, and if it is not removed it acts like a very abrasive sand running over all the bearing surfaces.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I talked with my Porsche dealer in Houston, Momentum Porsche, about the IMS failure. They refused to recognize there is a problem and told me they have not done the IMS Retrofit Kit by L&N ever. So who do I go to in the Houston area for this fix?
So I asked L&N who they recommend:
Their reply:
Thank you for your inquiry. Because of the many different shops we work with and because a lot of shops do not buy directly from us but from a wholesaler, we do not recommend shops. I would suggest to you take your car to your current shop that you know and trust. If they have not done the job as of yet, they call us to get more information.
Sincerely,
Tammy E. Hellings

I know the guys at RUF here in Dallas have installed some. Really no reason that you'd have to come all the way up here to have it done though. Not surprised about a Porsche Dealer wanting to avoid admitting that there is a flaw that was so bad a company had to design a produect to keep the engine from grenading. IMS problem...what IMS problem?! It's one of those "internet rumors".
I will say that most independent shops and dealerships use our retrofit kits. Only a small percentage of shops don't use them or acknowledge the problem. Ever since going to a wholesaler for distribution, we have lost track of who is buying them and how often.
It isn't rocket science. Any Indy you trust to do a clutch or other service work should be able to do it. We just finished one today on a 01 Boxster.
Cheers
I know it is not rocket science. I was hoping someone in the Houston area could point me to someone who had done it for them here. I would not want the dealership who does not recognize the problem to do it, and I do not have experience with an independent Porsche shop around here.
So I went over to Steiner racing yesterday. I spoke with Juergen Steiner about doing the L&N IMS retrofit. He said it would cost me around $2300-$2400.
Does this sound reasonable? He said if I was doing the clutch as well it would be around $3500. Sounds like you got the deal of the century!
I have discovered LN Engineering now sells the IMS Guardian, an oil monitoring system that detects metal content in the oil supply. When the metal content of the oil reaches a certain level, a warning light and alarm sound off indicating an impending IMS failure. Has anyone had this installed? It is a cheap alternative to replacing a perfectly good IMS.
The price could have been +/- 2500 just for the IMS - plus more for the other stuff. I just brain dumped that info since the upgrade. Any way - he's a good guy and does good work! - quick too.

I paid my local indie shop around $2,400 total for a new OEM clutch installed and LNE IMS bearing replacement. I don't know why it should be much more than that for this work.
Excellent information. I knew if I kept digging I would strike gold. I will continue searching the Houston area for better pricing on having this replaced. Maybe having the clutch replaced at the same time is the best option? Then it looks like the LN retrofit work comes free!
I have 34,000 miles on my 2000 996, how much longer should I expect the clutch to last. It seems rock solid at the moment.
You can't tell about the clutch if it is not already slipping. I did mine at 46K. The clutch was still usable and the original IMS bearing was still OK, but binding a bit. But now I do not worry about either failing. BTW, the LNE IMS replacement bearing runs about $600, if I remember. But labor for the clutch is the major cost. It takes very little extra time to do the IMS after the transmission and the flywheel are removed.
Guys I have a question. I have a 2004 c4s that has 16k miles on it I bought it about 12 months ago from the original owner. Would Porsche help me out with this? Is so where do I start? Also the mechanic is telling me that along with needing an IMS he wants to rip the engine apart and cost will be btwn 7-10K? Is that too high and is that really necessary??
What do you need help with on this low-mileage car? Did you get a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) performed prior to purchase? What are the indications that you need to do anything to repair/modify this car? Are fluids dripping out? Is there debris in the oil filter? Are there odd sounds coming from the engine? Is the CEL on and blinking? Are there serious fault codes coming out? If not, "the mechanic" is taking you for an expensive ride. Get another opinion. Just drive it and enjoy it.
I installed the IMS Guardian a couple of weeks ago myself. It took me about 5 hours, I poked around a whole lot. It was very easy and a fun project. The instructions are very good. They have the install video on their website, check it out.
As far as shops go, I used Pro Technik for my SC rebuild, but they are closed.
Anyone know what Sam is doing these days? He is great guy.
I've had some 996 work done by Lucas Auto Care and European Auto Techniks, very happy with both.
Good luck!
Well we are past that point. I heard a noise and quickly shut off the engine. When I came outside a few minutes later there was a significant amount of oil on the ground. I had the car taken to my mechanic where he pullled out the tranny and said the IMS went. Not sure how bad just yet but he said it needs replacing and he has not done one. He referred me to another machanic who has done many of them. He told me that he can repair it but that the engine needs to be take apart.
Ok so here is my question if I caught the IMS failure in time does the engine really need to be ripped apart?? If not this would save a signifcant amount of $$$.
I would like to know if anyone has been through this and if I am being taken.
That would depend upon a couple of factors, the biggest of which is how much debris was circulated before you turned it off; it the answer is "a lot", the engine has to come apart. More than one person has tried to put one of the LN updates in an engine that was rife with metal particulates, only to have the engine blow shortly after it was put back in service.
Failing IMS tend to shred a lot of metal before the bearing itself starts to make noise; you cannot get this debris out of the engine without taking it completely apart, and if it is not removed it acts like a very abrasive sand running over all the bearing surfaces. No engine can survive that.............
If we get a car in with this type of complaint, the first thing we do is pull the oil and sump cover; if there is metal everywhere, it is over.
Ok so what if it was caught in time and the metal is not all over? Then what? I know this is a "it depends issues" but how am i who is not a trained professional know if I am being taken?? If there is not metal and the ims in in tact and not medal in oil pan what should I do?
These are the kinds of situations best left to the experienced eye. If the engine is clean of metal debris, replace the IMS and get on with life. But if there is metal in the oil and sump, you will be throwing good money after bad if you try to go that route..........
Did not mean to sound patronizing. I don't have a recommendation for a shop in your area. We charge approx 2500.00 to instal and new LN bearing and new clutch kit. Hope that helps
Cheers
