Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

2 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Pelican Parts: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm getting a "gear selector not engaged" message on 3 out of 5 start attempts. When the message appears the start sequence will not initiate. Returning the ignition switch to off once, sometimes twice, clears the message, and the engine starts without hesitation. Any ideas? The car is an '03 996 cabriolet tiptronic.

POST 2Original post

You should have a P code generated with these faults. Get someone to read the code and that will narrow down the area to look. There are P codes stored in the DME that don't light up the CELL. You can buy a cheap code reader at any auto parts store that plugs into the OB2 port. Then you can google the code and figure out what seems most likely the issue. The ignition assy is a well known failure point with 986/996 models but it could be anything from the position switches for the gear handle (ECU reads car not in PARK before start = no start) to a loose wiring harness or connection.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
