Hello Gang!
I have not seen anything on these forums about this problem, but my 2005 987 BS (44,000 miles) was recently diagnosed with a bad torque converter. The primary symptom was fluctuating RPM around 2000... it would jump up to 2200 and then back down with constant throttle every couple of seconds.
The dealership quoted $3,900 for the fix, but said that it's mainly an annoyance and shouldn't cause any long-term problems. The only risk is overheating the fluid due to the slipping.
Has anyone experienced this before? Are there really no long-term effects? Anyone know a good shop in South Florida that could do the job cheaper?
Thanks for reading!
The dealership just diagnosed my
Cayman
with the same issue. Did you end up repairing yours?
So I know this is an old thread. But when I searched for torque converter problems this is about the only thing that comes. Problem it has no real info so I figured I would update it.
I had the same idle flux when doing around 50mph/5 gear. Would jump from 1800-2000rpm. Signs of the torque converter slipping internally. I also had a funny "bump" after every shift. It also was the converter loosing lock up. It can lock up in every forward gear, not sure about reverse.
So anyways, my point is if anybody else finds this with these same problems my where all solved when I replaced the converter while I did the
ims
/rms. I am lucky enough to have a converter warehouse locally and that is all they do. Cost was less than $300 and they deal with zf transmissions all the time.
Hope this info helps somebody in my position!
Thanks for the diagnosis on your
Boxster
. I am experiencing the exact same symptoms on my ‘06
Boxster S
. I live in the Toronto area and i’m employed in the auto parts business so l know a ton of good mechanics. I’ve had suggestions from using Costco gas to dirty throttle body’s as a reason for this problem. Reading your experience to find a fix gives me the confidence to put in motion a procedure to tackle this job. l plan to have one of my trusted customers (Rogue Auto) to do the ‘re n ‘re and have the converter rebuilt at a local rebuilders. I’ll wait until I take the car out of winter storage then hopefully have a great summer driving this amazing car.
Much appreciated you guys....Thanks.
2008 Cayman S
- just diagnosed with a bad torque converter, clunky gear changes and the high revving, Estimate from local South Fla
Porsche
shop $3,300. Since they have to pull the engine and transmission I also opted for the
IMS bearing
fix ($800).
If you don’t mind sharing, where is this converter shop located? I’m in Southern California with the same exact issue. Thanks
