I think some early knobs may have a set screw as well.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am trying to learn about my recent 1999 Boxster. I was looking into the shifter today and considering a short shifter mod. Mine looks modded. .It has a set screw that is very hard to turn and the leather it snuggled onto the knob with zipties. It seems the knob will not just pull off. I am curious if has been cut down. It is a tad over 6" long from the top of the white piece to top of the knob. Not sure if the knob is original. How tall is a stock shifter?

POST 2Original post

I don't remember if mine had zip ties, but the shifter looks stock to me. I have the same shift knob as well.

POST 3Original post

Generally the knobs are friction fit. I may have smacked myself in the face removing it, I can’t recall.

Yup! Pull *really* hard. I think some early knobs may have a set screw as well.

POST 5Original post

That looks like a stock shifter. I just installed a short in my ‘04 S & it’s completely worth it. Most short shifters I’ve seen have an aluminum body & my stock one had the same plastic body as yours does. I did have to take a dremel to the black plastic frame or mount in order to access reverse. The difference is night & day. The distance your hand travels is about half what it was & for me at least gears are more defined (especially 3rd)

POST 6Original post

That is a stock shifter. It is also a stock shift knob and boot. I've had the exact same set up in 2 different Boxsters. You will need to loosen the Allen bolt to remove the knob and boot. The more basic knob and boots don't have the bolt and can be just pulled off (with a lot of force). The boot and knob will fit on any short shift that you would purchase.

That's really interesting. When I swapped out my shifter, I thought it was interesting that the post was blade/oval shaped and not a round shaft like every other shifter on the planet. I wonder why porsche went back and revised the part? Sent from my SM-N975U using Tapatalk

POST 9Original post

Which short shift kit did you install? My 2004 S doesn’t shift very crisply, especially 3rd gear and I want to upgrade.

POST 10Original post

I installed one of Ben's ball bearing short shifters and really like it. Seems to make shifts quicker and more precise.. The exact shifter that I have doesn't appear to be available but this looks like his current version - https://www.uniwerksdesign.com/product/bens-porsche-996-986-short-shifter/ Photos of my install here (near the bottom of the page) - https://rx19jones.wixsite.com/projectboxster/projectboxster2 Cheers - dj

POST 11Original post

There are a lot of options. There are the cheap short shift kits from China that you can find on eBay and other places. I believe in the early days, Ben used to buy these and modify them. Ben sells kits to modify your shifter too. I ended up putting a 987 shifter in my 986 - which offers a slight reduction in throw.
