Suggestion
If you have any doubt that you might want to change the current car years down the line for another, I would suggest changing it now might make more sense - prices are only on the up (for new).

718 GT4 and 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 the perfect couple
The Boxster as a daily and the GT4 for track days and road trips
As an aside it must amuse them they can get away with the spinning swastika on the wheel centres. I did mention this to their CEO a few years back and the reply from Germany was they hadn't noticed.
Who's running Porsche?

New cars are quicker (0.4 Manual v Manual) and more powerful (54hp) than the outgoing 4 pot models. Same torque manual v manual, although delivery might be different
Now that customer feedback has got Porsche to do a bit of a u-turn on the engine, how about we start clamouring for lightweight version of this? Lose 75-100kg and this would be super exciting.

Yep, I'll expect a Cayman R variant a bit later...
I hope they drop the PASM and Torque vectoring for it too.

When will Harris etc get their reviews out.
Viper green really works on that car. Porsche are back and I hope they pump our loads of the manuals to help keep the prices of lightly used ones under control...

I think these will be a hot ticket.. a much more appropriate car than the GT4 Twins for most people, and probably even many that have got or are getting one of the GT4 twins but will never see a track.
Pricing is very keen vs the GT4 twins also. It’s these new GTS 4.0 cars that will put pressure on all used 981 prices inc 981 GT4 (unless buyer are specifically looking for a GT car as opposed to comparable performance per £/€ $ + warranty)
Porsche master class in making lemonade from the lemon disaster of the 4-pots. They can convert all the pent up demand, and also now almost unique position in the market as large capacity, NA, manual.

What's this going to do to 718 GT4 values
Likely will just help to kill off the overs market. Back to the old pre-991 day’s where you only buy a GT car if you are gonna use it on track...else there is no benefit, not a lifestyle brand.
You can get GT4 performance, and GT4 engine in the same body, for booster with a fully automatic roof all for 10k less and it’s road biased...which is where most of the new GT cars live anyway...they won’t see a track.
You can get the same bucket seats, same stitching, no wing... and road based chassis...’GT4 touring’....lol
Problem is that the gap to a regular joes eye isn’t big enough between new GTS 4.0 and the GT4 twins.
Andyoz said:

I don't think it will impact them, suspect if anything most able to afford a GTS would be very tempted by a GT4 for an extra 11k.
Chassis wont be the same, the GT4 is equipped with a GT3 front end for example. I'd suspect availability on this to be much greater than on a GT4.
Huge impact on anybody who paid full list for a recent 4 pot GTS I'd expect.
I think it depends with the Spyder - if you want an electric roof and like the shape of a regular boxster then I can see the desire for one. The thing that makes me desire the Spyder besides the NASP engine is how it looks. The streamliners/humps change the side profile and rear view significantly for me and I have never been a fan of regular front end, the GT3 also gives it a different look - more race car looking - this is completely subjective. But it is enough to want the Spyder for a little more money. The seat option and the aero add ons are just a bonus.

I’m waiting for a 718 Spyder and the colours available are pants - so Porsche release this
GTS in a green that is considerably more desirable than any available for the 718 GT4 and Spyder.
Bloody hope they open some PTS slots at some point.
About time, these look fantastic cars for the road and I imagine that people who have orders for a 718 GT4/Spyder that only really ordered to flip for a profit or for depreciation free motoring might now be thinking twice about bothering.
I have a mate who buys a lot of Porsches and has an excellent relationship with his OPC and he is taking a GT4 because he can and then plans to flip it straight away because he doesn't want it and it seems easy money.
Will he bother taking delivery now, will others in the same position?
I reckon a lot of people who really want a GT4/Spyder and have expressed an interest at an OPC will be getting phone calls by late this year as I think the bun fight is going to be over soon.
I understand the argument about the GT cars being more desirable, especially at list price but who in their right mind will now pay overs up to 118k for a flipped GT4/Spyder when you can just pop in to an OPC and order a GTS 4.0ltr to your own spec?
Overs on these is finished in my opinion.
Roll on a 4.0ltr manual 718 Cayman R, that really will put the cat amongst the pigeons
What’s the price....?
Eta: £64k Cayman, £66k Boxster. So well into the £70s then when specced...

There goes the secondhand values of all previous generation Caysters ! Normality has returned in the Cayster market after the disastrous 981/718 models, IMHO it's the natural replacement for the 987.2!
The new Cayman GTS 6 cyl in the stunning new green seems like a very appealing prospect..If common sense prevails this should end the current £10K overs on the GT4..A simple ECU tune from any respected tuner will replace the lost 20PS for a few hundred quid..

How so? This is a 70 grand car and so is probably out of reach for most owners. Not sure it will have much of an impact outside of the outgoing F4 GTS perhaps.

Yes and it was wrong then as well.
Already had my order in for this since October last year. It appears nothing has changed spec wise bar the engine. Comparing the spec i did in October which was using the old GTS config against the 4.0 the price works out the same bar £1k.
The first world problem now though is at this price point were into 991.2 GTS money, which has already taken it's initial hit in deprication and is of course a 911 with more performance than a Cayman. Decisions decisions........

It's on the configurator, but not on Porsche's website...
It still shows up within the Cayman model section, and is also on the configurator. I don’t think the S was ever listed separately in its own section like the T and GTS.
So is there no PDK option? I've been worried I might actually have to trade my 981 GTS in for the new 718 6cyl but I can relax if there's no PDK and my wallet will thank me for it. Having spent about 4 years driving 5 auto cars and finally accepting auto boxes, in spite of much kicking and screaming, I'm not going back now.
Or is it just a case of them making PDK an option in a few months?

PDK will be offered soo, once they have done emissions testing.
They will do this and the GT4 at the same time and it’s the exact same drive train.

They’ve allowed the a fuller colour set on this scan and even introduced a new colour for it. Python Green and we get lava orange.
Much more pazazz, than for the GT twins?
Have to say the want is strong for this.
For one car to do it all. This is up there.
I've just specced up a green one to a similar level of my upcoming GT4 and it's £80k, so roughly £10k cheaper. Take the clubsport package off my car and the gap is only £6k-ish.
The Caysters are no longer the poor man's relative of the 911 are they? With only two seats, a manual gearbox and a 4.0 NA engine they're becoming the sports car option for the old-skool enthusiast.
Nice work Porsche...
Hers's my build code:
http://www.porsche-code.com/PLVAXIR4
I was on a list at an OPC (second in line apparently) but couldn't resist another car so came off it. With an unnecessarily large spec. this comes in at just £7.5k more than my old CGTS from 2015, so looks to be great value to me. Porsche always seem to restrict the supply in same way, let's hope they are ready for more than a couple to each dealer.
I can only drive a PDK so until that's available I'm still ok I came off the list. For now.
Let's hear from those who have placed orders!

Got to be Python green for me..Question is which one seems better value compared to the GT4/Spyder..? The Boxster GTS is closer in price to the Spyder however with the desirable electric roof..The Cayman GTS at over £11K+ cheaper than the GT4 seems a bigger saving but without any significant practical improvement..

flip the GT4 with the OPC make £5k and order one of these.
you save £11k and your OPC love you for ever.

I am tempted but my spec came to £78.5k that's more than my 981 GT4 cost me !
it's great news this car but it's a tad expensive even if you do save £10k over a GT model (imo there are daft money now anyway)
4.0l Boxster with electric roof must be the best sports car on sale today.

Of course I'm not changing my order. I'd still personally take a 718 GT4 over this for the extra £10k-ish it will cost me.

amazing....I have no words.
It would be interesting to compare exhaust volume and tone of the GTS 4.0 against the GT4. Looks like they may use the same exhaust system?
Few people are already changing exhausts on GT4 to get more volume and pops and bangs. Apparently standard system is very restrictive, not just due to PPF either.

I reckon we will see a lot of this actually.. as its win-win for orderer and OPC.
For most people currently ordering GT4/Spyder - the chassis is wasted on them - so its a trinket. They will never experience or identify the difference.
Interestingly I wonder if we are at a bell weather point for GTS vs GT vs RS.
For 718 GTS vs GT4 Twins the engine is the same but chassis is different road v track. Means Porsche can get maximum return on investment for engine development and drive profit.
I wonder if we will see the same in the 992 911 - GT3 has become more and more daily each gen. Then we get a cross over model in the 991 with the Touring but without back seats. I wonder if this time will get get a new 992 GTS - that has GT3 base engine - but road chassis + rear seat option.
There will be no GT3 Touring - as its now the GTS - as it should always have been. And then the GT3 get the GT engine, GT Track chassis. RS is the full on track rat.... no compromise for road.... but happened to be great on road anyway. and then WP for those that want to show how much money they have, or how important they are to their OPC and/or friends and forums.
Shows what's been lost recently. A few years ago a 6 NA Boxster was no big deal!
These make alot of the range redundant. Apart from looks, who needs a Spyder? GT4 if you're tracking.
A 911 looks daft, unless you need the back seats. I'd definitely be after one only for that.
You all reckon that the new GT4 doesn’t sound as good as the old version . So apart for the 6 cylinder power delivery what’s the different to the original 718 gts have they changed anything else other than the engine which they are charging an extra £3k for . Any details of performance comparisons between the 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder yet ?

New 6-cylinder 718 GTS won't sound the same as the 981 GTS - but it will be better than the 4-pot GTS.
Also people prefer NA power delivery rather that boosted turbo for sports cars.
That what people care about.... its irrational.. but that what sports cars are.

I disagree - the GT chassis is a step up from the regular models and you feel it every time you drive the car. The 981 GT4 chassis is still more feelsome than the 718 non-GT chassis in my experience, so I'm expecting the 718 GT4 chassis to be another notch up when I drive one in a few weeks.
Just because you don't drive on track it doesn't mean you can't appreciate the chassis differences.

Being advised these will be fairly restricted supply, not many coming in, perhaps 250 in total.....
So getting one wont be a lot easier than a GT4 or Spyder.

No.
They should drop the silly 718 moniker for the 6 Cylinder cars... or just drop it in full.
Well this is what I have been waiting for, although in recent I think this might be a fall back if I don't get a GT4. But I will be going down to the OPC at the weekend.
My spec:

Quite restrained I think, but I don't think it needs much, the green is nice, but it would be a toss up between Midnight and Gentian blue for me.

So you're saying 250.. forever? or for this year?
If they are building GT4 and Spyder for the next until end of '21 why not the GTS also?
There will be more that 250 GT4 and 250 Spyder and they are top of the line.
That's a very low number for a regular model. That must be the 2020 allocation?
I can see the GTS 4.0, GT4 and Spyder being produced from now until the EV Cayster in 2022/2023.

Yep - this is what i think. Initial allocation which might only be for this year starting in Spring.
They have to split this engine across 4 cars now.
It also might be specific for 250 Manual cars for this year. That makes sense.
PDK will then come online and maybe another 300-400.
We have to read what is said and also what is not said

That would make sense re emissions. It'd still be a bit odd having restricted supply on a GTS model though.
The 718 will be around for a few more years? Or will it?
Are they gonna drop the 6 again?
The whole thing is a bit odd really..

The 718 will be around as-is until it switches to electric is my understanding.
Limited allocation might have something to do with profitability given the low UK price (at least at current FX) - probably rather sell more cars in Germany at a higher unit price

Just specd the Cayman and it comes in at under £70k.
Really don't think you need to go mad on options, the standard seats are good enough I just want to see an X73 option with buckets you then have your modern CR!

I’m struggling with exactly the same dilema. But manual GTSs are hard to find. And there is the F6T issue too. I don’t think I’d got for a 991.1GTS.

the standard spec has the sports 20mm drop no cost.
Does it , if so brilliant I hate PASM , don't need X73 then!
Where do I sign
both seem to be PASM
one standard you get PASM 20mm drop
if you tick the box you get the comfort 10mm drop !!!
I THINK !!

I just rang my local dealer and asked if I could order one. They had one last allocation available.
Does this mean production is coming to an end for the Cayman and Boxster GTS 4.0?

No ... it means the
dealer
had one allocation available from their allocations .....

Did the dealer explain the 'allocation' and the ordering processes, and give an estimated spec lock for the build?

They just said they have one allocation available which would freeze over the next few days. (now frozen)

Have you ordered a new Porsche before?/are you familiar with the ordering process? Not being patronising or condescending but its reading at this stage like the dealer just wanted your (so called) deposit.

Yes I have, and yes I am. Each time, the process has been the same.
What do you suppose I have missed in this instance?

Nothing, did they give you a spec lock date then (or anticipated date), just curious.

I placed the order last Wednesday with a spec lock date of the Thursday or Friday.
Email confirmation yesterday: "The 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 is all locked in for October build and due to arrive early November."
The sceptic in me is now wondering if this is for October/November 2024!

Seems you have been very lucky as all OPCs have waiting lists. One would have assumed the OPC would/should then have offered the allocation to the next on the list.

Only 2 letters different in reg number to the white Cayman GTS 4.0 I have yet to pick up from Bolton. Looks great in red! Really must get around to sorting out PPF and collecting the car soon.

Apart from being new at a ridiculous price, there's not much point in 718 GTS 4.0
Get a used 981 (not even S) and you'll get literally the same 2-3x times cheaper, with a better exhaust note.

I believe OPCs are a law unto themselves when it comes to this kind of thing. A car dealer acquaintance of mine, who hasn’t had a relationship with Porsche for a number of years, was cold called out of the blue by an OPC near me offering him a GT4 build slot. He collected the car last month. It’s currently for sale on his website at a tidy mark up. Shady dealings and OPC allocations go hand in hand.

Well you won't literally as it's 'only' a 2.9 or 3.4.
And having come from a 981 GTS to the new one, I have actual experience and by all measures the 4.0 is a step on in every way, except engine sound. Torque and general driveability is better, steering better, etc. Sure it's perhaps not worth £25-30k more for those benefits, but it is a superior car.

There's some truth in this. However, I got PTS. That is a massive factor for me in ordering a new Porsche. But yes - the car is too fast. Great though the 4.0 is, you can't nail it through the gears as there is too much power for the gear ratios. A 2.9 would be more satisfying most of the time.
Still... 4 litres right?!
Now I come to think of it, the 718 cockpit (along with seamless Carplay and that steering wheel) is probably peak Porsche cockpit along with the 991.2. Again, that's important to me

I'm not disagreeing with you but my only correction would be "except EXHAUST sound" rather than engine sound - which is a small but important difference. The GTS 4.0 engine sound is IMHO amazing - the howl over 6k is something else. Yes, no pops, bangs and growls but I'm ok with that. (just my opinion)

Having recently made that move, and I would suggest you have never driven the 4.0 in anger or at all.
It is a far better car in every aspect. It may not have the exhaust crackle of the 3.4 or 2.9, but the intake noise is totally addictive. Add to that a simple Cargraphic valve controller and it sounds b****y good and.
Sellers are still looking for 50k + for a 981 GTS which is now around 8 years old, so I am quite happy to have paid another 30k for an 8 years newer..brand new car.
However enjoy your 981

Bought a used 981 5 years ago. GT4. Still got it, still love it. Couldn't really have gone for another 981 - mine's exceptionally well cared for, but they are all getting on a bit nowadays. Production ended about 7 years ago now I think? I've already had a couple of 4-pot 718s, and there are a few things that make them feel like a step forward from the 981s. I really like the turbo engines, and being able to hear what people are trying to say to me on the phone while driving.
I've only driven a 718 GTS 4.0 very briefly at PEC Silverstone earlier this year. Nothing like as noisy, or for that matter engaging as the GT4. But I had one on order already, it is now at my local OPC awaiting a little preparation before I collect. Far from pointless for me. Its intended use is as a relatively refined, but still sporty "winter daily". I even have a set of suitable wheels and tyres lined up ready for when the ice, salt and snow come. I'll reserve full judgement until I've done a few miles in it, but my gut feel is that it will be a reasonably good car. I won't be all that surprised if it becomes a summer daily, and my 981 GT4 becomes a bit more of a garage queen/track day toy.
As "pointless" cars go (and let's face it, they all are really, aside from <£500 auction rescue Volvo estates), I think they're probably quite good.
Liam
I've driven a 718 GTS 4.0 back in 2022 and cancelled my order as a result.
It does sound like this indeed (from 3:45 min):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwHYwy7-7Hk
Which is nothing compared to a 981s, even without the sports exhaust on.
I much more like the 718 GTS - the 4 pot engine is simply AMAZING there and makes angry proper car sounds; far better vs 718/718s
While look wise 981/718 look pretty similar of course (911 generations do differ so much more).
To conclude - do I want to spend £40k to replace my 981s with a 718 GTS 4.0? No way.
Hello - firstly thank you to all those that have contributed to the Boxster / Cayman forum over the last decade. The posts helped inform my decision to buy a new 981 2.7 in 2014, assisted with a warranty claim (the PCM failed), what tyres to buy (PS4S) etc etc.
I've driven 75,000 miles and the car still brings a smile to my face. I'm just back from a trip to the Dolomites, one of many European holidays in the car. I have a runabout for driving to work so the Boxster is mainly a weekend car which has never been tracked, has an OPC FSH and remains under Porsche warranty.
I placed a deposit on a 718 BGTS 4.0 in January 2023 and now have been told I have an allocation for which I will need to confirm the spec later this month. Good news, but £85k (approx) is a significant figure and £30k more than I would really want to spend, although it is a great car and I have no interest in buying an EV.
I now have a decision to make and would welcome your thoughts. I would like to drive a Boxster for another 10 years and continue to drive to Italy / Spain for holidays with annual mileage approx 7k. I could buy the BGTS - you only live once, although I may have to delay retirement by 6 months (still 5 years away) - not a great hardship. Or, do I spend some cash on the 981 which would keep it fit for purpose for another 10 years? The brakes will need changing for the first time, but what else would need to be done and what would be the approx cost?
My wife is supportive of either decision, her main concern is over the colour as the Sapphire Blue 981 is much nicer in her opinion (and mine) for a sports car compared with the 718 colours although she thinks my current choice of GT silver is ok. Also she knows I'm not a mechanic and doesn't want to be stranded on the side of the road should there be a problem with the car.
Apologies for the long post but I thought others must have had similar first world problems to deal with.

In ten years time probably not much breakdown risk difference if you buy a new or a £60k three year old low mile 718 2.5 GTS today and keep it under warranty as long as possible?

Probably won't be collecting from Bolton, but from the guy that's doing the PPF, who will be collecting on my behalf and trailering up to his place for the job. It will be a couple of weeks yet, as I'm going away and will collect on my return.
I was at Bolton Porsche Centre this morning for a pre-track day inspection of my GT4, so had a look at my new GTS 4.0 with all its protective bits still on. It looks great, especially chuffed that it's on PS4s tyres, which I am really looking forward to trying.
2 more sleeps until you collect yours Henotd, you must be really excited!

IIRC you can only run OPC warranty until car is 15 years old / 125000 miles, so at your current anticipated mileage and assuming no significant variation on this, you only have another 6'ish years (age) and 50000 miles where you can extend your warranty. After that it would be 4ish years of non-warranty running. Question is with 981's seemingly popular and relatively expensive currently (especially for what is now a 9 year old car, what would the delta be between what your current car would be worth at 15 years old and 117500 miles on it - without the option for a buyer to extend the warranty, compared to the onboarding cost and depreciation expected on the replacement vehicle.
If there's no borrowing involved, the newer vehicle would, I expect, have a wider potential customer base, and the fact that potential purchasers could transfer the existing extended warranty in to their name for no cost (if buying the car privately from you), or purchase the extended guarantee themselves if you've stepped away from OPC servicing for whatever reason.
Guess it really depends how sure you are that in 10 years time you won't want one anymore, if the money invested overall in a new car is not needed for anything else in the in-between, and what you think is likely to be worth more in 10 years time relative to what it cost you during the course of ownership. I think the newer car would be an attractive proposition to me - 3 year warranty, new car would in theory at the point you were to sell in 10 years time have circa 65000+ miles on it (assuming delivery is before the end of this year), and be circa 10 years old.
Who knows what the next generation are going to value (literally in used car terms) and figuratively (what will they yearn) in 10 years time. I think the 2030 date for all new cars being EV will fail, and even if it doesn't your potential new car would be much younger than your current car. Will the market be bigger for a 15 year old with 117500 miles on it, or a circa 10 year old car with circa 65000 miles on it.
If you have any doubt that you might want to change the current car years down the line for another, I would suggest changing it now might make more sense - prices are only on the up (for new). Either way none of us are getting out of here alive, so enjoy your time. Sorry I've not helped, lol.

Got the P4S on mine too..pleased as last Pirellis I had on F10 M5 did not inspire confidence, especially in wet.
Driving to the company who are doing my PPF ,hopefully no chips in the 10 mile journey.
Where do you track the GT4 out of interest

I actually quite like Pirellis in the wet, but PS4S definitely better in the dry. Had a very wet morning at Silverstone earlier this year, so went out on P Zeroes. They are good in the wet on track, and were actually pretty reasonable when the track dried out in the afternoon, but I wished I had an easy way of taking my spare wheels with Michelin Cup 2 for that bit.
So far I have only been to Anglesey and Silverstone with the GT4, but will hopefully have time to expand my horizons a little more next year. I'd love to have a play at Oulton Park. Anglesey this Thursday, predicted sunshine, Cup 2 tyres fitted, so all seems pretty good with the world just now.
I'm sure you'll get as far as the PPF company without stone chips. Wishing you an absolutely brilliant "new Porsche collection day"!
Liam
No comment on what is a better performing tyre, but the Pirelli have a stretched look and therefore no rim protection. The exposed rim on the back tyres especially is really noticeable.
From prior experience, Michelin offer much better rim protection in general and assume the same on the GTS wheels.

Personally I have zero interest in a 4 pot Porsche of any flavour and in 5 or ten years or whenever will always bypass such adverts, it simply doesn't appeal at all.
It's not all about exhaust as mentioned the intake sound on the 4.0 is really addictive and there is a time when pops and bangs are tiresome. I do have them in my TVR so can enjoy those but they're very subtle, not the extremely anti social version as say an F Type. Noise cameras are coming sadly
The BGTS 4.0 is a really good car and will hold it's value far better than a 4 pot, I love mine and in Python Green it looks simply stunning and well worth the extra IMO.

Happy new car day. You've even picked some nice weather for it.
Hope all goes well.
A couple of observations from my experience:
- Check the tyre pressure settings are what you want. Mine had been set to "Comfort", easily changed within the TMPS menu. It then means the Fill Info will be correct.
-If it looks like you have a leak from the leading edge of the passenger door, don't worry. The washer bottle has been overfilled and a little of the excess is escaping. A squirt of the wash/wipe will remove the excess and stop the "leak".
Enjoy your first 10 miles.

Good job we're all different. The hype and nonsense that the 4 pots don't hold their value is just complete internet BS. Both engines have their advantages and disadvantages. Didn't look at the the options lists but the lowest price 6 cylinder 982GTS is a 20 plate GTS with 12745 miles @ £64990, lowest price 4 cylinder 982GTS is an 18 plate with 35833 miles @ £53990, hardly a chasm between the two when you factor mileage and age in, is it... The market isn't following your speculation... highest listed approved use 982GTS 4 cylinder is £63495 with 6950 miles on a November 19 plate.
I wanted a 718 GTS 4.0 in mid 2021, and a couple of OPCs were happy to take my money, but were unfortunately quoting 18 month waits. It takes me a while to decide on something, but once I have decided I want it now. 18 months is insanity and I'd never wait that long for anything - especially when I didn't have something interesting to drive in the meantime. Hence, I ended up in a 981 GTS, which I really love. Taking it on track too has also reinforced just how capable it is.
Fully appreciate that the 718 GTS 4.0 is a superior car and objectively better in every way, but now that I have the 981, I just can't justify the cost to change. For me, £30k to swap to something that is in reality a very, very similar car is a non starter. However, what is on the cards is seeing how the land lies middle of next year and maybe pick up a used 718 GT4 instead! I'll drive it though, so I'll need something that has already done a fair few miles and depreciated nicely.
Congrats to you gents picking up the GTS 4.0
. I've enjoyed watching them come through and I'm sure they're epic. It's just a shame that this is the end of the line.

Absolutely agree with that, being different is essential to enjoying the variety of life including automotive design. If you look carefully I didn't say 4 pots won't hold their value, it's just an opinion I have been wrong before
Enjoy what you have, I do, but I will never desire to own a 4 pot Porsche or anything that needs plugging in

New unregistered - still for sale I believe.
Here is our new GTS, collected a few weeks ago.
Just completed 1,000 miles today on the return from attending the PEC. The GTS 4.0 is a super impressive car and was very enjoyable to thrash someone else’s car around the track.

If you’re thinking about keeping long term, I’d go for the new car. I have had a similar dilemma with a Macan. Bought a 6 year old Macan Turbo to experience the car whilst I have a deposit for a new Macan GTS. I considered cancelling the order and keeping the Turbo and also considered buying a 2/3 year old car with low miles.
I decided as I want to keep the car 10+ years, there are a number of reasons I am sticking with the new car order:
- New car will be specced to our preferences
- Keeping our current Macan would mean it will be over 15 years old when we still want it to be a main contributor to our daily transport
- current Macan also means a few compromises on spec items we want
- I didn’t see value in a 2/3 year old car compared to new price. In my view the same is true with Boxsters, particularly if you are looking at a long term ownership proposition.
You have a different set of circumstances and your Boxster is more of a fun car, but from a purely financial perspective, buying a new car with all the benefits that brings for the long term seems a much better choice than sinking money into an older car.
Good luck with your deliberations.

You are facing the same dilemma I am. I placed a deposit in March 2023 as I have owned 3 Boxster's, 2 x 986s and 1 x 981 Spyder. I have driven 2 x 718 4.0GTS's (including Barchetta Boys on here) and was very impressed, quicker and better to drive than my 981 Spyder. I see it as the last chance to buy a manual ICE car to my spec. However a few things are putting me off and your post just re ignited my doubts.
I have just completed a faultless 2,750 mile road trip to lake Bled and back in my 2001 78k miles Boxster S. It was comfortable, quick (165mpg on the autobahn) did 31 mpg, AC was cold, loads of luggage (I think 718 frunk is smaller?) It has everything I need and I don't need to worry about putting miles on it or where I park / leave it. Yes a BGTS 4.0 will be better but at current prices £75k+ better??? So to answer your question your 981 will definitely be fine in 10 years time. I have completed 7k miles each year over the past 2 years in my 986 and if it goes pop, well it goes pop, 986 are 10 a penny.
The other issue is colour, I'm just not feeling any of the colours, I want PTS and its not available. I cant spend £85k on a colour I don't like. My 986 is rainforest green and as a PTS option on the 718 it costs more than my 986 is worth, but I would pay it if it was possible, but its not.
Cars are changing rapidly, as is the world. I'm deluding myself into thinking the 4.0 BGTS would be a 'forever' car but I don't know if that would even be possible given the way legislation is going. Perhaps a 10-15 year car then throw it away! Next year (2024) I have read mandatory autonomous braking, data logging (black box) and speed limiters come into force. Although required since 2022 they haven't needed to be activated but in 2024 all new cars will need to have these systems functioning . If my 4.0 BGTS were to fall into this legislation there would be NO WAY I would go through with it.
Its a tough choice but ATM the carefree ownership experience of a worthless 986 in a colour I adore with no assistance nannying is winning the argument.

Hi,
So I have a Jan 2022 Cayman GTS 4.0. From day one the car has always been put on a battery tender ( official Porsche one as well). Last Sunday after an 80 mile trip, I came out after lunch and the battery was unable to turn the engine over. Dash was lit up like a Christmas tree and warning of low battery. Thankfully AA were able to get it going using a booster, so I got home after a two hour wait.
The OPC tested the battery and said it had a duff cell and needed to be replaced. Porsche won’t cover it under warranty either as it‘s only done 2k miles.
Quite disappointing as I thought I was doing the right thing by always having it on the tender, but it seems to need more than that. Lesson learnt…£380 to replace :-(
Intending to go back to Porsche GB and question the decision. It seems inconsistent to when they do and don’t replace batteries under warranty.

In Porsche terms £380 is a bargain, but in the real world that is annoying to say the least. Keep us posted as to how you get on. Also is the battery tender set correctly?

Yes, absolutely, I'd be miffed too. On a CTEK charger, I've managed to keep batteries going way past their sell-by date, and having been properly flattened in some cases. (My 981GT4 battery was not great when I bought the car, used, from an OPC, in 2018, but it's still going. Won't be trying to claim on goodwill for that one when it dies!)
If there is ever a reasonable claim, it should be for parts that have been looked after well over a relatively short period.

Apart from being new at a ridiculous price, there's not much point in 718 GTS 4.0
Get a used 981 (not even S) and you'll get literally the same 2-3x times cheaper, with a better exhaust note.

Well having owned a 981& now BGTS 4.0 I can say you are wrong
What’s the view on indy servicing. Due first minor service (done 8k miles, 2 years old BGTS 4.00)?
Clearly want to preserve the warranty but we’ll be keeping the car very long term so not bothered about resale in the short to medium term.
I’m NW based.
I would personally try to keep the OPC service schedule up, but anything other than servicing I would choose a good indy.
It's is purely for resale, I don't believe the OPC does a better job, but keeps your options more open should you change your mind about ownership.

Finally, after what felt like a long wait, despite being no longer than any new Porsche purchase so far (aside from self inflicted, due to work trips and a holiday)... I have a Cayman GTS 4.0 safely home. So I have a winter hack ready for the coming months, and my rather well-enjoyed 981 GT4 can breathe a sigh of relief.
You'll notice that unlike most, I remembered to spec a rear wiper so I can see where I have been. Mickey has already been taken about this by the PPF installer, so no need to repeat that here. He was pretty relaxed about my choice of manual gearbox, and the full Crayon stitched GTS leather/alcantara interior package, so if you want to deride me for either of those, I'm up for it.
Worse than either of those, I was sufficiently besotted to pick up a TAG Heuer/Porsche watch during one of the work trips. I feel like it sort of "goes" as a reminder, except that the face designer at TAG Heuer clearly never got the memo about Porsche not putting a zero ahead of the 5 in the first position.
Haven't driven it far yet, and running in carefully as I always do. I think it's going to turn out to be a monumentally good car. Especially pleased that it came with Michelin PS4S. Less so that there are a load of switches, including a rotary selector, on the steering wheel. But it does seem that 2024 MY 718s come with a CD player slot, which I hadn't expected.
First world issues I know. I keep saying the next 718 will be a keeper. This one definitely stands the best chance so far!

Has anyone bothered with corrosion protection?
I intend to use my BGTS all year round so am toying with the idea of full Lanoguard treatment. I've had this done to a couple of my cars before, but they're Japanese, so tend to come with very little corrosion protection when new.

Haven’t driven the GTS for a couple of weeks and the steering feels off, notchy if that makes sense, especially at low speed. Is there any way to recalibrate it without a visit to the dealer?
Piwis is what I use to calibrate mine it needs to be done every time you mess with the alignment or it feels a bit off. There might be some other tools available Google it.

I asked my OPC service manager and technician about applying Lanoguard and they were not keen, in fact told me not to do it.
We have Lanoguard on my wife's Lupo GTI and it's good stuff.

Thanks for the feedback. I guess it's a conversation I can have with Porsche at handover day.
My cars just passed 1 year old and I let my Porsche Car Connect Service lapse. Looks like I’ve lost basic app functions of mileage and fuel etc too. I’m used to BMW where you don’t need to pay for this? Do I really need to pay to get this basic info on the app?

Yes , afraid so.
Didn’t bother me though I’m probably a Luddite .
Porsche don’t miss a trick to extract money do they! Most manufacturers simple mileage, location and fuel remains free. Not here. Don’t think I’ll pay for the odd occasion I use it.
I think it's actually Vodafone that collect the fee, but yes, a huge annoyance. I let it lapse on my last 2 new Caymans when they got to a year old. I'll have to see how I feel when the GTS 4.0 gets there. Always seems a lot of money for what it actually is.

I can't believe you only get 1 year with Porsche, I was under the incorrect assumption it was 3 years, it was on my Macan.
Could it be it's just the embedded sim that you lose after a year not the services? If you put your own data sim in, would you then get the data to/from the car. My Macan just using a 3 data sim still has the location, fuel, tyres, locking situation, I don't pay for the Porsche embedded sim.
Do you also lose the location alarms etc., as I like this feature.
I wonder if the Vodafone tracker which costs £230 or so.....also requires you to sign up to Porsche Connect
It’s bundled together if you get the tracker. I let my GTS sub lapse as didn’t see the value in keeping it. The Spyder needs a tracker for insurance so had to stump up.

You can keep the tracker sub without the connect part of it AFAIK - sure that's what I've done
Yes, the tracker part is the Security Services and it's around £230. You can see the vehicle's location with this. I also got 'Safety' services in that price.
Remote Services is/was another £109 and you need this for the speed alerts and trip information etc.
I use a 3 sim which costs circa £30 for 25gb over 2 years. I do get all the location services, I.e. car position, tyres, fuel etc. I don't pay for the Porsche sim.
However that is on a 2018 Macan and I think they did change sim requirements so I can't be sure it would work on a 1 year old car.
The other advantage is that when using Waze, Tom Tom, Google maps and anything that draws data, that then comes from the inserted car sim rather than my phone data package.

If I'm understanding you correctly - you put in your own sim, and all is well in terms of the car speaking to the app about location, fuel level etc? No faff around reprogramming anything etc?

Yes, I bought a 3 sim and don't pay Porsche for their sim and I have fuel level, tyres pressure, location, locking situation etc.
This is a 2018 car though and as stated earlier I have no idea if this works in a later car. I had read somewhere maybe on a Porsche forum that newer cars require the paid Porsche Connect to access it. What year is your car?
However for £30 it maybe worth a try.

Thanks, much appreciated. I've got a May 2021 Spyder, and since I stopped paying for the connected services I don't get the fuel level etc although I can still see the location - I still pay for the tracker

Nice car
If you do try a 3 sim or similar and it works in a 2021 car, please let me know as I wouldn't then pay Porsche to keep their sim in my 2023 Boxster GTS4.0.
I've just put a deposit down on this:

and would appreciate some feedback.
As with any used car there is a compromise on spec. For me I wanted a manual in red, silver or white with the GTS interior pack and under £65K This car only as the standard air con and also only has PASM (-10mm) rather than SPASM (-20mm). I'm fairly certain I can live with manual air-con as I never use auto in my other cars but what I'm curious about is what effect the standard PASM has on steering, if any.
My understanding is SPASM includes thicker front and rear ARB and shorter and stiffer springs but not sure if the dampers are different. This sounds like normal PASM should be less crashy and more compliant but does steering feel get sacrificed as a result?

I wouldn't worry about steering feel, there isn't much to start with!
Is this something that you have concluded over time with your BGTS? I seem to remember you singing its praises early on.
After a few hiccups with the delivery process, I finally took delivery of my 718 Cayman GTS just before Christmas.
Pic attached. I think it looks fantastic in GT Silver with silver wheels (but tastes may vary…).
This was a once in a lifetime purchase for me so I ensured it had the right spec for my tastes and needs, as follows-
Black leather interior with Porsche crest on the headrests
Brushed aluminium interior trim
LED headlights
Adaptive Sports seats
ParkAssist
Light design package
Bose
It’s a manual. I had a PDK- equipped one on extended test, but while that was a mightily impressive ‘box, I am very pleased with the manual, which feels perfect to me - precise, tactile and quick.
It’s still early days with the car but I know I made the right choice - maybe it sounds a bit boring but it just does everything ‘right’. The handling/ride compromise is a revelation and the weighting of the steering is just perfect. The car is refined, but retains enough ‘mechanical noise’ in the cabin to keep things interesting. The car is being run in but it is clear that the performance available will be more than ‘adequate’.
I bought the car as I had heard that the next iteration of the Cayman and Boxster will be EV only (and they don’t interest me at all). That might now be in doubt, with a suggestion that production of ICE mode also will continue alongside EV for a while, but I am glad I bought when I did. They are superb cars.

It's something I concluded after getting in a 987.2 straight after mine. There is nothing wrong per se with the electric PAS on the 718, it's as good as any other modern sports car (bar McLaren and Alpine) and better than most. Nicely weighted and calibrated. But it will never be as feelsome as a good hydraulic rack IMHO
I was toying with parting ways with my 4 year old Cayman 4.0 GTS - however, after a 1500mile journey to Andermatt and back to go cycling I now can't really think of anything that comes close to it at this price point. It was simply terrific on the drive down there and back (33mpg!) and then was perfect on all the passes (Grimsel, Furka, Susten & Gotthard).
Manual, N/A engine, 400bhp, amazing handling, looks great.
Was thinking of "upgrading" either to a GT4RS or an AM V8 Vantage as have a real itch to scratch on both of those but now I'm not so sure and might just stick with !
P.S - the M3T took all our bikes on the roof and was more fun to drive on the passes than I thought it would be. But incomparable to the Cayman as they're performing entirely different functions.

was that at the crack of dawn to get a photo like that with nobody else around?
Believe it or not it was about 6pm and was really busy ! But everyone there was lovely and didn’t mind shuffling about a bit so we could get our shot.
Lovely set of super nice German guys were there as well getting their shot with their 911s. Saw them after at dinner at the top of the Grimsel.
I do love my PTS Boxster GTS but the gearbox irritates me no end. You just can't rev the engine out on the public road, it's ridiculous. Top of second gear is something like 80mph, top of 3rd 130mph
As a result the upper reaches of the engine's rev range are seldom experienced. I could fix it with a short final drive but can't quite bring myself to pull the trigger as it wouldn't be cheap

I'm looking an M3 Touring's to go with my Cayman GTS 4.0. I've got a B7 RS4 at the moment but to be honest there's so little room in the back with the Recaro seats that I can't really do long trips with kids in the back, so may have to retire that to hibernation.
What's your thoughts on the Touring, all the reviews I've read and watched have been very complimentary? I'd like to use it to drive down to Majorca with all the family holiday gear and still have a good time! Other thought is a Range Rover Sport!

Way more exciting than a RR sport.
It had loads of grunt and traction.
The turbo lag is 100pc there but being progressive with the throttle pedal mitigates large amounts of that.
Seem to hold their value well.

I have a PTS also in the same car. I always felt the same as you about the silly gearing in my 981 spyder its about 85 mph in second. So this time around I have gone PDK and the gearing is tangibly shorter plus second is just a number on the clocks so I dont feel the same pain of selecting 2nd in a gate. It suits me but what a pita that the manual cant have proper gearing as I still love a manual box.
