that is an opinion using YOUR money, if it were mine (and I had no 996 experience) I would get someone who has a 996 and who is familliar with them to check the car out THOUROROGHLY - BEFORE buying

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am considering buying a 1999 911 C4 with a blown engine. What would be a fair price to pay? I have a line on an engine. The car is in otherwise great shape with 64,000 miles. Was told there is a crack in one of the cylinder walls. Is this typical? I shouldnt have much trouble swapping the engine myself. Thanks Mike

$10k tops that is an opinion using YOUR money, if it were mine (and I had no 996 experience) I would get someone who has a 996 and who is familliar with them to check the car out THOUROROGHLY - BEFORE buying and getting a used motor can be real crap shoot, search IMS, issues, cracked heads and cylinder wall issues with the M96 motors...nothing to be scared of but you should know ahead of time also try Rennlist, the 996 crowd over there is pretty active and there are good people with good info

POST 3Original post

I just bought a 99 996 with a bad engine due to oil/coolant intermix. I paid under 7 for the car and have found an engine as well. A couple of things you may not realize is that you just don't swap out the engine and plug and play. When a cylinder breaks (your engine) or you have coolant and oil mixing for other reasons, the sludge is completely through the cooling system. It will have to be completely removed (bumper cover, rads, lines etc to get it cleaned out. This involves a lot of labor and then there is still the gunk within the heater core and small hoses you can't easily remove. I've had the rads cleaned professionally and the heater core has been chemically treated to get the crud out 4 times now and it is still coming out. While you're doing the replacement you also should put on a new AOS, water pump, clutch and, of course, the IMS bearing upgrade. You may also need a coolant tank. So price out this stuff, plus the cost of your engine, labor etc and compare it to a car ready to go, possibly with the IMS update, and you will be able to figure out what you should pay for your roller.

POST 4Original post

I was going to buy one here in NY for under 6 but backed off due to 930 issues. So I would say 6 is the most I would pay. Brake down the facts. A good rebuilt engine installed is going to cost you over 10,000 installed. The value of an 99 is in the high teens. Also how many miles are on the car. How is the suspension and the trans. You'll put a new clutch in which is a few more dollars. So all in all you are at the price of the car any way.

POST 5Original post

As far as the IMS and all the issues of the 3.4 and 3.6 996 engine. I have a receipt of my car getting a 16,000 rebuilt with 3.8l piston and cylinders from LN engineering. So sky is the limit on the engines. I can say that it is a very quick car.
