LN confirmed the injectors were bad, they refunded my money, and I replaced with OEM and all is well.

I'm sure there's a better way to notch the injectors but I used the cutting wheel on a dremel.

Use minitimer connector (ev1) instead of the uscar connector

The 3.6 came out with EV6 plastic "4 hole disk style" but still used the Minitimer connector (EV1) instead of the USCAR connector used on most all other EV6 injectors, so no wiring adaptor needed.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I couldn't find pictures or a writeup for this so I took some while I hacked a bunch of injectors. I'm sure there's a better way to notch the injectors but I used the cutting wheel on a dremel.
Here they are side by side (white is 3.6 and black is 3.4)
The notch for the clip is 9.22mm from the top on the 3.4 injectors.
Fortunately, this happens to be right where the seam is on the 3.6L injectors:
Mark them up with Sharpie to aid visibility when cutting:
Not pretty but it's serviceable:
Test fitting:
There's a piece that sticks out of the injector body that indexes to the clip. I tried bending the tabs on one of the clips and both broke so I'm not sure how to get the anti rotation tabs engaged. If anyone has ideas, all ears.
Also, replacing the injectors makes me empathize with dentists as working in such a little space is quite the challenge.
I guess Ill ask some dumb questions. Why upgrade the injectors on a stock 3.4L (Im assuming) engine to the 3.6L ones, and dont they already have upgraded injectors that fit without modification?
Didn't do anything. After the rails were bolted down, I wasn't worried about them going anywhere. Mk2 clips would be a good idea.
Way cheaper. There's a thread somewhere stating that have a better spray pattern and around a 10% higher output. Seemed appropriate for my 3.8L.
Framed the shot with the box as an "attempt at your own risk" warning. (Ryan snagged that pic from my other post)
Yea, there was a thread a few years ago where everyone was bitchin about the cost of the 3.4 injectors being 4x more $$ than anything else.
The 3.4 uses EV1 metal body "pintle style" injectors.
The 3.6 came out with EV6 plastic "4 hole disk style" but still used the Minitimer connector (EV1) instead of the USCAR connector used on most all other EV6 injectors, so no wiring adaptor needed.
Plus the 10% more flow is better suited for the E10 fuel A/F ratio that is now ran in the 3.4 and will remain closer to ideal Lamda 1 (stoich)..The 996.1 was not designed for E10 so the 996.2 injector is a better fit flow wise.
So using the 996.2 injector in the 996.1 is a win-win-win, better spray pattern, better A/F Lamda 1 , lower cost $$$ ....
I don't have my car apart at the moment, but this is a project I think I will want to do.
I think I could model and 3d print a jig that will make this a clean, repeatable process.
It really doesnt need to be the accurate. Once u get into it most will see that they worried too much before they started. U can prefit them into the rail and double check everything before the final install.
Thinking about this, if I were to do it over again, I'd make a simple jig with wood and clamp the Dremel tool down. The jig would really just be a 2x2 with a 2-3mm deep hold drilled into it the diameter of the injector end. Clamp the wood down where it puts the injector seam at the dremel blade and rotate the injector as the dremel cuts. No need for a 3d printed piece. Maybe two pieces of wood, now that I think about it, one clamped down to act as a Y axis guide and the other designed to guide the injector as the cut is made.
Yep, after the little clip mod deal, just Plug-n-Play, it's well within the Fuel Trim capabilities of the DME. (actually better than stock EV1 injectors when on E10)
Woo-hoo, started the car up and idled for a bit plus a few revs and no fuel leaks (or gas smell). Idle sounds slightly different. Looking forward to getting it on the road to see if it feels any different.
I only got a chance to run errands and make sure I didn't get any new lights. Well, I did a quick run up and down backside of Mulholland. My first run through 1st gear I accidentally bounced off the Rev limiter. 2nd time I did it again. I think my wheels are actually able to break traction now as 6k to 7k goes by a lot faster than I am used to. Overall, the car seems to have a bit more kick to it. Doing a U turn, I was able to get the wheels to spin a lot more easily (I think, I don't normally make it a habit to do that, lol) and accelerating from 1st to 2nd has a much more aggressive kick to it.
I'm supposed to go to Ventura tomorrow to pick up wheels (BBS Re795s
) so I'll cross over one of the canyons to get some fun driving in on my way over.
Initial impression is that this was a good $250ish spent.
Well done!
I think 996.1 injectors are 240cc or so...

Another cheap option would be volvo / bosch upgrade

Ouch, looks like I am only seeing prices of $100+ for 996.2 injectors everywhere like Pelican:

Is injectorplanet.com a reliable source for remanned injectors?
To tag in here. Im a 2003 996.2 C4S.
Just like coil packs, appears that most sellers are stocking Chinese made OEM Bosch injectors.
The Chinese ones are blue as stated in the customer review at this same pelican link.
Anyone source the white ones actually made in Germany?
Not going to pay over $2k for Porsche OE injectors, but will pay $600+ for ones made in Germany.
Given Porsche doesnt manufacture injectors, along with most parts, even more egregious would be Chinese made ones labeled with Porsche then crazy mark-up to $2k+ Porsche Part prices.
Thats insane. Genuine Porsche injectors for a 99 were about $650 for me. I see FCP has yours for a whopping $2100.
Seems when the internets gets wind of any potential upgrade for older models even using OEM parts, they jack up the prices. Dont talk about this stuff online anymore
Why don't you guys figure out what the flow rate is and buy some injectors from Injector Dynamics or another reputable place? I got a set of precision matched 127PPH injectors from ID for about $1400.
Well, the only issue is that MK2 is now around $2100 from the reputable places for the OEM Genuine Porsche stuff. The Chinese items are obviously cheaper but I just went through my own hell after buying those and Id tell anyone dont buy the blue crap.
Honestly I tried going to Bosch and reading through all their injector docs and those dont list flow rates or anything, and I am not sure who else we could trust for real numbers.
But as soon as porsche runs out of the german made stock u will be getting the the same chinese made bosch injectors at a $350 premium cost. That goes for all the sensors being made too.
Not sure about this bad lot of injectors LN sold that seem to suck but it doesnt sound like they were an official bosche product. But i could be wrong?
Outatimemk - Can you elaborate on personal hell of installing the Blue OEM Bosch injectors?
There ought to be a reliable OEM solution. My main concern is injectors that have leak-down from wear can contribute to borescoring. Jake Rabys video series on scoring, talks about changing injectors as preventative maintenance along with the benefit of restored performance
Any ideas that arent in the $2k plus range? Otherwise may just leave existing ones in there, but I am at 90k miles now and should be replace regardless.
Sure - that hell is actually documented here:
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...ng-thread.html
Also, I can confirm the blue LN injectors do NOT have Bosch branding.
Its not the installation/replacement that was painful, it was the diagnosis. All of the evidence seemed to point elsewhere, and the LN blue injectors were new so I didnt suspect them until I had already replaced everything else. They simply cause the car to run rich, cause random stalls, and throw P1123 and P1125 codes which are O2 codes. LN confirmed the injectors were bad, they refunded my money, and I replaced with OEM and all is well.
Got it, so bad batch of injectors. So LN sourced injectors is a good solution then?
The reality is anything made in China is not automatically bad, just depends on design and QC standards.
Just disappointing that companies associated with quality (Bosch) have gone the way of most of the world to manufacture in China due to cost. All other things being equal or better, Ill normally pay up to 20% more for made in USA (Germany in this case) for quality and/or supporting domestic workers. Thats getting tougher to doas USA is largely a service economy now. Maybe some changes with next election..?
Anyone - Does the white plastic disc remain on the injector for installation? None found mounted on ones coming out but a random one (now brown) on the floor upon removal. Sent PM to Da Jeepers, but kinda need answer soonestassume yes but then would need to find other two old ones. Still in the manifold holes would be no bueno
Thanks to All!
OK, answering my own questionfound now brown disc still in the manifoldconfirming no additional FOD in my engine can press on to the torture of the drivers bank
