Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

But when I checked the current across the wire, from alternator to dash pod, I couldn't get any continuity.
Leading evidence: 'Check current across the wire' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check current across the wire' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I checked the plugs in the back of the dash pod, I put in a new top of the line Bosch alternator and checked the plug there, both connections were good.
Check worm gear and will otherwise disassemble myself

I will verify that he actually checked the worm gear and will otherwise disassemble myself.

Car previously had a an obscenely large stereo installed by what I assume was a 20 year old with late 2000's YouTube access.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Tach in my 996.1 has been dead since I picked it up. Dead as in it never moves, ever. I had my assumptions and bought it expecting the worst. I seem to have gotten the worst. This is referring to the dash gauge; OBDII live date does show RPM. I checked the plugs in the back of the dash pod, I put in a new top of the line Bosch alternator and checked the plug there, both connections were good. But when I checked the current across the wire, from alternator to dash pod, I couldn't get any continuity. It is possible (I did this wrong). Car previously had a an obscenely large stereo installed by what I assume was a 20 year old with late 2000's YouTube access. Best guess is he crushed it somewhere while running wires for subs and such ***** nilly? Anyway, I couldn't see a break, and Porsche doesn't sell the pig tail or wire alone, only the entire DME wiring harness for an absolute mint, and a headache. What are my options? My mechanic suggested an OBDII-based digital unit in the vent. I'm wondering if I can tap into pin #9 on the OBDII port for a real dash pod gauge.
So you have power to the back of the cluster itself? I've never heard of just the tach going bad. Usually when it goes bad the whole thing takes a dump which is rare. You can find used cluster on FB Market place or eBay from dismantlers for $200-$300....
Had the gauges been replaced? Or attempted to be replaced? My tach gauge quit working but I had separated the stepper motor casing and dislodged the worm gear by accident. Had to take apart and fix, no problems now.
I have 2 parts clusters somewhere....If I recall correctly, tach assembly is separate from the main board.
Can't upload pics at the moment for some reason but can confirm the tach is separate from the main board. So tach can be swapped and not worry about mileage issues.
This is an interesting thought and that may be the intimate and probably easiest solution. I had my mechanic dig in on it while it was getting some emissions work done. I will verify that he actually checked the worm gear and will otherwise disassemble myself. I am not sure on changing gauges or attempting to, but I assume not. The previous owners definitely cut a few corners.
One thing I should note: PO claimed the tach died "around the time I replaced the alternator." Was it the exact time? Was it after install? Was it the same time he knew it needed to be replaced? I have no way of knowing and he didn't seem to recall specifics, but after reading through schematics, I thought it was likely connected.
tach motor is part of the board with the two other gauges. I can send to you if you want the board, with the 3 working gauges. Pretty sure I only have black faces though.
I may take you up on that and my gauges are black anyway. This would require calibrating the odometer, correct? Next rainy day, I'll pull the cluster and see if the motor and gears are good, first assuming my mechanic didn't already.
Not sure if there's a way to bench test my current tach to see if it's a motor issue or a power/signal issue, but that would be an ideal thing. My mechanics concern was the wire from the alternator has a break in it, which wouldn't be surprising as the PO before the guy I bought it from had some real hack job wiring for an elaborate stereo set up, but again, the guy I bought it from made me think it was somehow related to his alternator replacement.
Question for you - I've got the glass fronts off the gauges, but I'm a bit stuck. I cannot find a tutorial on how to get to the little motor. I can see it, but I cannot separate the back black plastic piece from the white front plastic piece. I saw a tutorial online but it showed removing some torx screws on the back side that aren't on my 996.1 cluster. Any help would be appreciated!
