It would also seem the genius engineering decision making at the factory hasn’t stopped them putting steel bolts in alloy components and vice versa so they can add an engine removal for a simple job or changing a cov solenoid buried somewhere ridiculous.

All I can think at this stage is that it’s a bracket which is part of the GPF and they won’t be willing to reattach a new bracket so are quoting me to replace the full unit.

Replacing the OAP just for the bracket seems completely mental but the OPC were adamant that was the only option.

The workshop team weren’t able to give any more detail and all she could tell me was that they would need to replace the pipe - but not the exhaust pipe.

I asked the OPC to replace one at service time - they could not as Porsche don’t supply them as a part - their solution replace the whole of one side of the exhaust which sounds like what your dealer is proposing.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Had my 718 GT4 in for its regular service today and the service advisor informed me that the heat shield clamp on the over axle pipe had broken off (apparently corrosion) and their suggested fix is an unbelievable £3,500!! The workshop team weren’t able to give any more detail and all she could tell me was that they would need to replace the pipe - but not the exhaust pipe. All I can think at this stage is that it’s a bracket which is part of the GPF and they won’t be willing to reattach a new bracket so are quoting me to replace the full unit. Has anybody any idea as to whether these heat shields are attached to the GPF pipe and if I’m on the right track? If so, is this likely something that an inde could weld a new bracket onto? With this added to the cost of new front brakes (which I do need but they also quoted a very steep £3,500) and the service itself at well over a grand, is coming in at over £8,000. Plus the 2 year warranty extension taking it up to over £10,000. Not covered under warranty as it’s deemed corrosion, car is in great condition otherwise, not used over winter and kept garaged so I’m amazed it’s failed if it’s not a manufacturing fault.

POST 2Original post

A few years back now had a somewhat similar problem with my 981 Spyder; heat shields in that car are secured by 2 mild steel zip ties which of course corrode. I asked the OPC to replace one at service time - they could not as Porsche don’t supply them as a part - their solution replace the whole of one side of the exhaust which sounds like what your dealer is proposing. The Service Manager was very apologetic and embarrassed. I bought a few stainless steel zip ties for pennies and a tool for properly tieing/ cutting them - ideally you need to remove a wheel to get the best access - a few minutes later all done. My car was also always garaged and not driven over winter so I imagine this is a very common issue. So worth looking under the car to see if you have the same problem.

Not covered under warranty as it s deemed corrosion, car is in great condition otherwise, not used over winter and kept garaged so I m amazed it s failed if it s not a manufacturing fault. Typical OPC... they don't fix, only replace. OEM OPFs are stupidly expensive and Porsche seems to use bolts/hardware that corrodes with almost any water contact. The heat shields are bolted to simple brackets that are welded to the OPF. Would be extremely simple for someone to fabricate a new bracket and weld on. I'd consider either: 1) take to machine shop and have them weld on new brackets. 2) buy a second hand OAP... you can usually find them for £500 or so and people often replace these with aftermarket Since you're renewing the warranty I won't suggest an aftermarket solution that eliminates the OPF. Re:brakes, I assume that's for steel discs and pads on one axel? If so, that price is nuts. You can look up the cost of the parts but I'd guess around £1k in parts? The labor would be less than an hour so I can't see how they get to £3500. It's a very very simple job you can do yourself but if you're not comfortable then indy all day long.

POST 4Original post

It cracks me up the prices they charge on a brake service-I can swap out the discs in my GT3 ( on 5 lug nuts)in less than 20 mins and 10 mins of that is carefully jacking the car up!

POST 5Original post

front brakes package in parts is 2.5k so they want 1k to fit which is 3 hrs!!

POST 6Original post

cseven said: front brakes package in parts is 2.5k so they want 1k to fit which is 3 hrs!! heh, I guess you can tell I've never bought oem discs. The parts price is silly too.

POST 7Original post

OPC parts prices are generally ridiculous. £ 3500.00 for steel brakes and pads ? At the very least I’d expect to be met at the reception desk by Harry Enfield in an episode of ‘ Saw You Coming ‘. It would also seem the genius engineering decision making at the factory hasn’t stopped them putting steel bolts in alloy components and vice versa so they can add an engine removal for a simple job or changing a cov solenoid buried somewhere ridiculous. Truth of the matter is any Korean car is far better executed as an engineering package, some might convincingly argue as a driver package as well in the case of the N series..

POST 8Original post

Sounds like a perfect excuse to get a JCR on it

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks everybody for the comments. It sounds like a similar issue to elisered so hopefully a straightforward fix as you say. Replacing the OAP just for the bracket seems completely mental but the OPC were adamant that was the only option. For the brakes, I’ve done it on a number of cars before but as someone said, the parts prices alone are £2.5k (I won’t be paying the OPC a grand to fit them anyway 😂).

POST 10Original post

In fairness to the OPC, I had a quote recently (just for parts) for front discs and pads on my 718 4.0. Including PCGB discount the price came out at £2073.05. OPC labour rate is roughly £250 an hour so you could probably save a bit of money if you ask for a discount but not much. Front discs are the most expensive part at £444 +vat...each.

That was with the PCGB discount so £1,400 fitting if the parts prices are the same which is just ridiculous!

POST 12Original post

Get a quote from an indy to do the job with OEM parts.

POST 13Original post

GT4 discs and pads are different as they are bigger. Front discs on the GT4 are ~£1000 each from Design911 but may be cheaper from your OPC (they usually are).

POST 14Original post

Personally I’d go with 9M floating slotted discs which are half the price, lighter and don’t have the drilled discs problem of micro cracking and uneven pad wear.
