I ended up buying a couple of PS2's for the rear off Tyroola and had them delivered and fitted by Tyresplus in Richmond.

For anyone in the Melbourne area looking for tyres try Motorsport wheel and tyres on greens road Dandenong they are showing 285/30/18 ps2’s for $396 which sounds a good price, they have just fitted some continentals on my Ute for a great price and fantastic service from them.

They were the same width as the Carrera 2's, so when I got my tyres fitted today, I opted to put them on the twists, which keeps the car original and saves me storing the damn things in the garage

I had Contisports CS2 on the back of mine, which have just been replaced by PS2s all round.

Suggestion
Just replaced my 2 rear tyres, Pirelli Rosso N4s again (3rd set), I wanted to change to Michelin Pilot sport PS2 N4, could not find any in OZ at all in 295/30/18, none in WA so ended up with the same from over east @ $645 ea.

Suspected cause
Has Conti SC2s on the back of my C2 when I got it, and they seemed fine, it was the fronts (older Sport Maxx) which were probably my problem, but PS2's cured all that and car as a whole now seems much more settled on the road.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It's rear tyre/alignment time and apparently my usual tyre man (Rocky at Donellans in Collingwood) has moved to Perth so I'm looking for a new man, any recommendations, preferably inner-ish north east-ish?
I'll be replacing 18" Michelin PS2's which were great but didn't last long, so any recommendations for alternatives appreciated too.
Thanks Dan, might be a good opportunity to get another key programmed if I go to PCM.
Anyone got any experiences with alternative rear tyre choice compared to PS2's in terms of cost/performance/longevity?
I had Contisports CS2 on the back of mine, which have just been replaced by PS2s all round. Dunlop Sport Maxxes on the front before, think they were the cause of my wandering steering, the PS2s transformed that for sure. The Conti CS2's were fine, and we had them all round on the 987 Boxster S we had. I did 20,000 kms on them in the 996, but an alignment problem saw premature wear on the inner shoulders, there was plenty of tread left in the centres......
Have been running PS4's for 6000kms including a couple of track days and I'd say they'll go to 20000km.
Can be difficult getting correct sizes. I'm running 275/35x18's which is the largest you can get for that tyre I believe.
Bridgestone S-02 are another good option, liked them a lot.
Also depends on if you buy into the N spec or not. I personally do but others may disagree.
The trade off is the tyre is tested and approved for the 996 (for example) but as technology moves forward should you buy a tyre with newer technology or a tyre that was tested and approved on the 996?
I have new PS4S's on at the moment which are about 3000km in and have no complaint for general daily use.
Highly rate the PS2 which i had on before the PS4S's.... the PS2 seemed a little more loud road noise than the PS4S's but may have just been in my head. either way you cant go wrong
It's interesting that people won't buy the N specification tyre, but all the development work is already done for you and Porsche update the N specification list usually every two years or so. The track is a different matter but on the street, the N tyre is the way to go, surely?
What ever you do, do NOT mix compounds/manufacturers front and rear, this is a specific directive from the manual.
I have PS4s on the 996, never tested them against the others so no hard data to determine whether they're any good. Lowish TWI, I'm happy with the grip levels. Noise, life and price are a secondary consideration however.
So just calling around, for 285/30/R18 seems like there's only the pilot sport cup 2 (for michelin). I rarely track it, maybe once every 6 months, is it overkill?
Doesn't seem like there's any stock of normal Michelins PS2's or any other of PSS, PS4's etc.
I ended up buying a couple of PS2's for the rear off Tyroola and had them delivered and fitted by Tyresplus in Richmond. Was initially very apprehensive going that route but the whole process went very smoothly, very happy with both of them. Tyresplus in Richmond were professional, no fuss and picked up something in the alignment I'd been a bit suss on after the previous alignment.
Ah ok, did you do this recently?
oo.. just checked out the website, nankang ultra sport ns2 - $154 each!.. that's cheap.. anyone had any experience with them?
Have one fitted to get me out of a spot till I could replace both. I had Bridgestone Pontenza 285/30 ZR 18 but they are no longer available so just looking at options now. The Nankang to me just looks to narrow when compared to the pontenza.
can you tell how it feels? probably a bit hard with just 1 tyre i guess.
Other options are Conti sportcontact 2, never really tried conti before, not interested in Pirelli's. Ah well. i can always wait till ps2's are back in stock. The Cup2's aren't too much more expensive to be honest. But probably are overkill for daily driving.

Ah that's not a bad price, will try calling around more to see if anyone has stock.
but sounds like the guys around perth all call from the michelin warehouse.
Although that said i was offered cup2's for $450 each.. just worried it's overkill and wear out quick on the street.
Not a bad price, the company I work for get all their tyres done there. Competitive prices. This was going to be the first place I speak to when up for some rear tyres for mine.
I have just placed an order for PS4's as my car is for everyday use. I changed from P Zero's to PSS's on my S5 and it was a huge improvement. Ny 996 currently has Dunlop Sport Maxx's on it and I don't rate them at all, but I don't have a frame of reference. I briefly considered PS2's and if it was just a weekend car I think they would be great, but for everyday, I was concerned about high wear and also wet grip?
I couldn't get PS4's in the sizing for 996TT's so Ive just put a set of Cup 2's on it. I didn't fancy using 20 year old tyre technology which is what the PS2 and Pirelli P Zero Rosso's are now, if I could have I would have taken then PS4 route.

The Pirellis are very noisy, one of the worst in the range, and get noisier as they get worn to the extent that they were howling and screaming at anything over 50Klms/hr with 3.5mm left on them, on new ones and its a lot quieter but still a lot of road noise. Thought it was wheel bearing but Indy says not just the tyres!
Are there any choices in modern 285/30 sizes?
I'm faced with replacing the back two which say Michelin Pilot Sport N3 285/30 ZR18.
But might go all four if there was a good modern choice - the fronts still have wear in them but are old and pretty dead.
I know nothing about tyres LOL
So - dont all manufacturers say that?
Do we know what happens if you do? Why is it so bad?
I'm struggling to get matching rears - and when I say me, I mean my tyre guy.

Has SC2s front and back on our 987S, and they were pretty good. We got about 30,000kms out of the backs (Boxster seemed to go through equivalent of 3 sets of backs to 2 sets of fronts)
Tyroola has:
PZero Rosso Asimmetrico N4 in 285/30/18 and 225/40/18
Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 N3 in 285/30/18 and 225/4018
Both are N rated and available in 996 dimensions.
Thanks!
This other forum thread hates the Pirelli's!

I remember way back in the late 90's I have a '76 911 with Boxster wheels on it for a while, and that came with Bridgestone SO2s - I remember liking those
🙂
Thanks, that's very helpful!
I've picked up a set of 996.2 wheels in that size and trying to work out the best size tyres to fit.
My 996.1 wheels are 7.5" / 9" and currently have a set of 225s on the front, so it's interesting to see you guys put 225s on the 8" rim also.
EDIT: Turns out I had looked up sizes for my wheels but must have got it wrong. Perhaps I looked at the version that went on the 986 or something, as mine are already 8 and 10"...
Yep, that’s the ones!
I blame being locked at home and bored for the purchase, but will keep me occupied thinking about something other than work for a little while...
😂
They look good too I think (although this looks lowered which probably helps)
Turns out I had some dud info on the width of my factory option twists... They were the same width as the Carrera 2's, so when I got my tyres fitted today, I opted to put them on the twists, which keeps the car original and saves me storing the damn things in the garage
😁
...
I went for Sport Cup 2's 225/40 on the front, 285/30 on the rear. Took ages for them to get stock, waiting on a shipment from o/s, but done now.
Hey P team,
Weighing up PS2 vs PS4 for my 225/40/18 fronts, local bob Jane man said the PS4 is cheap $190 however the catch is they’re made in China unlike the PS2 which is ($275) and made in Europe...?
any thoughts and guidance would be appreciated!
I just checked them they are made in China.
The ps3s i have on the back are made in France
200 fitted from my local shop.
Ps2s seemed hard to get att.
Tyres only last 30k klms anyway.
😆
Wouldn’t surprise me. I had to wait 4-5 weeks to get the full set of Sport Cup 2’s. I think they had the fronts but only one of the rears in the country when I ordered...
Similar situation when I was looking for PS2s about this time last year. Was the same for a few other brands, all supposedly on a ship on the way here. Could get fronts or rears of a couple of the alternatives to PS2s, but not both. Worth the wait though
🙂
I'm only comparing to some pretty awful Kuhmo's that were on there (and the rears were the wrong size - which is part of what threw me on the rim size) but after a bit of a drive today, I agree, well worth the wait!!
Ok quick search on the Chinese tyres.
Some punters reviews and professional surveys.
All the top manufacturers are producing tyres there. Seems from around 2009.
Punters on forums have varying comments as you'd expect.
Professionals that had no idea what they had on the car during the tests rated them well.
I wasn't aware they we're China made so had no preconceived idea.
They seem as good as the ps2s I've had on this car. They and the car outdrive me anyway so.
