Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I remove them completely and take advantage of the opportunity to clean/ purge them completely.
Leading evidence: 'Clean / purge them completely' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean / purge them completely' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Im reasonably handy with a wrench and have access to a lift so am giving serious consideration to pulling the gearbox off the car and replacing the IMS Bearing with an LN Engineering one.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all,
Im a long time lurker first time poster. I own a 1998 3.4 996 with 65,000 Miles on the clock. Hello!
Im reasonably handy with a wrench and have access to a lift so am giving serious consideration to pulling the gearbox off the car and replacing the IMS Bearing with an LN Engineering one. Charles from LN Engineering has strongly suggested I dont tackle this job but send it to a pro (800 Labour...). Having read a few success stories I think I will give it a go.
I have a few questions for the people who have completed this job already:
- Do you need to pull all the chain tensioners? I've heard you can leave 4-6 in. If you leave it in does it have an impact on the job?
-Do you need to remove the chain tensioners completely or can you leave them screwed in just a tiny bit to avoid the chain jumping and timing being compromised?
-When you insert the new bearing is it 100% clear when its in far enough??
I might think of some more questions as time goes on. While im in there im going to replace the clutch, RMS (maybe), AOS and a few other bits and bobs. Does anyone have any info on the AOS?? Is it fairly easy to work out how to change it??
Cheers
They MUST be pulled, if not the cam timing will be compromised. Also, if not pulled the bearing can't be removed as the tensioners push the IMS sideways in the engine, misaligning it with the access port on the case.
At bare minimum you must pull the IMS tensioner and the tensioner for bank 1-3, the 4-6 tensioner is the hardest to access and it makes the least impact on the job since its on the opposing end of the engine from the access port.
I remove them completely and take advantage of the opportunity to clean/ purge them completely. Dirty tensioners lead to noises at start up.
Absolutely. Because the groove for the snap ring to be inserted into becomes visible. You can't go too far in. The insertion is the easiest part, extraction is the critical point.
I almost have my IMS Retrofit instructional video completed.
Thanks for the reply. Ive been waiting a while for the instructional DVD so I might just wait untill thats complete. Any guess as to when its going to be coming out?
FYI-Porsche has developed some bespoke tools for use before and during RMS insertion. One such tool is a precision measurement gage for determining crankshaft "drift", an essential measurement when determining whether RMS replacement is worthwhile. Also, the depth of RMS insertion into the engine case has been a bit of an experiment for Porsche. Hence, you may wish to consult with some experienced technicians before beginning this job. Just my thoughts.
