Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

However, you must consider that the Carrera engine is not a Mezger like the TT Turbo, so you need to take the time (and money) to thoroughly have the car inspected for all the issues known for the Carrera engines and there a number of issues that need to be addressed (IMS bearing, AOS, bore scoring...).
Leading evidence: 'Inspect issues known' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean auto' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

These used car dealers get their cars from an auction, which is pretty much the last place a good car ends up.

- yes, not exactly a dealer associated used car lot - so unclear (at least from the car fax) where they got the car from or how well she was cared for - even though she looks really nice...

Suggestion
These used car dealers do their best to generate profits from these sales, so if the cars require any repairs in their possession, theyll usually opt for the cheapest repairs to accomplish the job.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Im sorry if this has been discussed elsewhere and if so, please point me in the right direction
I have my eye on a 2003 911 convertible with 48k miles
carfax appears clean
2 owners
looks clean, auto with standard features
not sure if I can get it reliably inspected
and, more importantly, local service would be a real pain..
the used car dealer wants about $25k
ive done a little reading and had a good experience owning a 996 tt cab 2004 for a few years but that was awhile back and this, well a 20 year old 911 and no clue how well it was cared for?
I think she spent most of her life in CA
any advice is welcome and thank you
I guess you can only determine if this is something that you
want

I also have reservations about buying cars from a used lot. These used car dealers get their cars from an auction, which is pretty much the last place a good car ends up. That being said, even a Porsche dealer will probably send a trade-in like that to the auction block, unless it is something special. They just don't want the liabilities.
I assume you are paying cash for this? You will need an additional slush fund for repairs, which could be a significant portion of the sale price. Worst case is an engine failure which is about a $20K - $25K job.
Self-servicing these cars is possible, but if there is no independent shops that know and understand the 996 well, that will be a problem. 20 year old cars break.
Marv,
thanks for your prompt reply.
Part of my questions stem from the history that I had with the 2004 996tt-cab years ago - I only had it for a few years and it was not cheap with the routine stuff, like oil changes, tires (I needed also new wheels) and fortunately, I never needs anything major done - but I owned it a decade ago and this car is 20+ years old. I knew that it was a potential ticking time bomb (boats are for people who cant afford a Porsche?)
- yes, cash if that means anything
- yes, not exactly a dealer associated used car lot - so unclear (at least from the car fax) where they got the car from or how well she was cared for - even though she looks really nice... just a guy that owns a plot of land with an office and a bunch of used cars out front....
- I doubt that I can get anyone to easily and appropriately inspect her for the key issues you bring up, let alone fix any of the stuff
(I know friends who have Porsche's in the air - they are all newer cars and no major reported problems - but for most important MB, Audi, etc - a mechanic needs to fly in, heck - even Tesla's need to be shipped out). When I had my 996, even getting someone to rack it to changes the tires was a pain....
I am starting to get the sense that there is a reason it is "cheap" - and part of that is the unknowns?

This is a good point, and Id like to expand on this. These used car dealers do their best to generate profits from these sales, so if the cars require any repairs in their possession, theyll usually opt for the cheapest repairs to accomplish the job. That usually means theyll use low-priced (and likely low-quality) parts, if not used parts.
I say this only as a warning to be extra cautious during the examination of the car.
